INSPECT CONDENSATE DRAINS. Energy.gov also suggests making sure condensate drains, w hich take moisture pulled from the air aw ay, are functioning properly. If they’re clogged, they may not be effective at reducing humidity in a home, and they may even leak.
Wildlife: Animals and insects can destroy turf roots. Animals or insects may feed on the grass from underneath its surface, compromising the lawn’s ability to procure nutrients and water. Animals like moles or raccoons may feed on grubs in the lawn, and treating for grubs can alleviate torn-up turf.
Gardening pointers for novices

OATKA EDITION
People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

Com m on Law n Crit t ers A nd Pest s: Chinch Bugs: Chinch bugs like to feast on grass that is significantly exposed to sunlight. Though tiny chinch bugs are visible to the naked eye, homeow ners may find they need to get especially close to the ground to see them. Chinch bugs may be living in thatch, so dethatching your law n w ith a rake can make it easier to detect their presence. As chinch bugs rob grass of its m oisture, they also inject toxins into the grass that loosens it from the soil.

On Saturday, April 8th the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The late snowstorm prevented us from going outside so we adjusted and held the event in the Maher Lodge. The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and a jelly bean guessing contest. Thanks go out to the organizations and individuals that made this event possible. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you for the wonderful call I received on April Fool’s Day regarding the March 31st Give & Take column about a treadmill that you had available. We came to pick it up and you even helped load it. It was raining and we had nothing to cover it up with and you gave us a tarp. I want to thank you for help loading it and it works great! Thanks again and

put up as shelter, junk all over the yard, bushes overgrown and it is causing rodents. The house has no power, never a light on and no one is living inside. I don’t understand why nothing is done about this. It is not fair to the neighbors who live around this house and pay taxes. Clean up your yard or vacate the premises.
April Fool’s Surprise! We thank whoever paid for our coffee and donuts including tip at the Town & Country restaurant in Batavia on April 1st. We shall pay it forward. Ann & Louie Amazing Concert! I want to congratulate all the excellent musicians at the GWMEA All-County Festival held on Saturday, April 1st. The music was performed in such an outstanding manner, everyone involved should be very proud. To the teachers who worked so diligently to get the kids ready, you did a terrific job! To the conductors for the performance, your heart and soul was felt throughout the entire group. The choice of music was really good and to see the kids so in tune and excited to perform, was fantastic! Please continue to sacrifice your time and talent to put on these celebrations of the arts in our public and catholic schools. Thank you again for all your hard work, especially St. Joseph’s and Alexander who were represented extremely well. We really enjoyed it and look forward to next year!
A local farm has recently had a second wind turbine built. Since then, our area has had 3 “brownouts.” Does anyone know if this can be the cause of our recent outages? Of course the power company denies that this can be the cause. Online research says it is possible. When our power company was questioned about damage to home appliances such as: refrigerators, freezers, water systems, etc. caused by low voltage, their answer was “Don’t you have home insurance to cover this?” Which will cost us after they increase our policies. Perhaps recourse to replace burned out appliances would be to go after those who had them installed and also hold the power company that installed them responsible for costs. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have seen a backyard that is a disaster. They are possibly even living back there. Tarps
On Saturday, February 4th at the local dollar store, I dropped my green change purse with the letter N on one side. I went back to the store after I realized it was missing and was told by the manager that she gave it to a woman who said it belonged to her. It did NOT belong to you...that was MY purse and money that you STOLE. It was my grocery money for the week! Shame on you!!! To the person who left his/her Styrofoam coffee cup sitting on a log along a trail at Mendon Ponds Park: What did you think was going to happen to it? If you are not going to respect the park or the environment, perhaps you should drink your coffee at home, in your car, or at your local coffee shop.

Considerate people are often aware that something they may have done or said might have been offensive to somebody. Even though the incident was unintentional, as is usually the case, there is a natural tendency to explain…to apologize and make things right. When we apologize to a friend, they are already aware that our intentions were good. They need no apology. And, our enemies will not usually be placated by apology. A simple “I’m sorry” is as much apology as is ever needed, if there is any need at all. Our staff is always available to assist, whether with advice and counsel on pre-planning or with making arrangements at time of need. Feel free to call us at any hour.

I need a home Penny Saver Pet of the Week I’m Roman and I am a 2 year-old Pitbull Terrier mix adopted from Batavia Animal Shelter. I love my kitty brother and any other dog I have ever met! I am an excellent listener and great at following commands. I have a spunky personality and am very loving!
We’re highlighting our rescue’s longest resident, Bugsy. Bugsy has been waiting for a family for six years. Six. Years. We’ll be darned if we can figure out why. Although he has to be an only pet, Bugsy absolutely adores people of all ages, loves to play, and really loves to cuddle. He loves unabashedly, the way only dogs can. He just wants you to love him back. Last year, we saw story after story of long-term dogs getting adopted. We saw photo after photo of pit bulls with cardboard signs that said “I’ve been waiting 578 days for a family.” If Bugsy’s future adopter is reading this post, consider this your sign: Bugsy has been waiting 2,190 days for a home.

Daisy. Daisy came to us after giving birth to a stillborn litter. She truly wanted to be a mother so she took on the responsibility of nursing her rejected “nephews”. She is shy at first, but once given a little time to come out of her shell she is warm and affectionate. She purrs when you walk into the room! She would do best in a quiet house, but gets along with other cats. If you would like to meet Daisy or any of our other adoptable cats please email:

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several more sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete it, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. -- R.M. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room. The booklet on back problems gives an outline of some causes of and treatments for the more-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We recently lost a dear relative to cholangiocarcinoma. He had served in the Navy in Vietnam. The probable cause of his cancer was from a parasite, a river fluke, which is common to that region. The diagnosis came way too late to save his life. How can veterans be tested or diagnosed early enough for a possible successful cure? Are there any current tests available? -- J.A.E. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your relative. Cholangiocarcinoma is cancer of the bile duct, a rare cancer. Liver flukes are a risk factor, and so is a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition associated with ulcerative colitis. The cancer is rare but highly lethal, because by the time symptoms show up, the cancer usually is advanced. Also because of its rarity, screening for the cancer in a general population won’t be effective. However, for people at high risk, such as those with PSC or a history of liver parasites, at least one study has shown that screening with a blood test (CA 19-9, CEA) or by endoscopy can be effective. It would be reasonable to speak with the expert taking care of this problem, usually a gastroenterologist, about screening. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy TOOTH LOSS LINKED WITH LATER-LIFE DEMENTIA A number of studies link tooth loss with dementia. According to one of these studies involving people 7598 years old, those with few teeth (zero to nine) had an increased risk of developing dementia during the study, compared with those who had 10 or more teeth. This finding may best be explained by the possibility that people with cognitive impairment take worse care of their teeth. However, it is also possible that dental disease often causes prolonged inflammation and infection in the mouth, which may alter some factors in the blood that might cause problems in the brain. In any case, it certainly could not hurt to see that elderly individuals receive proper dental care. Did you know there’s a link between your oral health and the
health of your body overall? Studies show that poor oral health is linked to heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, dementia, and more. The good news is that, together with our dental team, you can take great care of your oral health and possibly help prevent other health issues. Please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at (585) 343-4246 or visit us at 6 Batavia City Centre. The range of services we provide improves the efficiency and convenience of your dental care. P.S. Tooth loss in the elderly can lead to nutritional deficiencies caused by an inability to chew and digest certain foods.

GOLF CARTS FOR SALE 2010 EZGO Golf Carts
Because Life is Better With Friends! By Linda Chadderdon
Recently my coworker and I had the privilege to sit down with 2 couples who participate in the Home Visitation Program in Genesee County. Both couples are older adults. Don and Audrey are in their early eighties and are members of our program to receive visits. Ken and Judy are retired and volunteer for the program and have been visiting Don and Audrey for two to three years now. When we arrived, the energy in the room was amazing! Through the program these four people have become fast friends. When we asked what makes this program work, their answers were quick. For Don and Audrey, Ken and Judy have provided friendship, acceptance and an additional sense of family. At their weekly visits they routinely share a snack, have insider jokes and have come to know each other well. Because they don’t have anyone close by to help, Ken and Judy check up on things they may need, have helped with yard work and also with connections to other services they have needed. Ken and Judy visit about once a week and both couples look forward to their visits. Don and Audrey know that they will always be there for them if they have a problem. Ken and Judy volunteer and share of their time and talents in several ways and we are fortunate that the Home Visitation Program is one of those places. Ken talked about the adjustment to retirement and that he enjoys still being active and contributing to helping older adults as he did in his career. He considers helping older people to be his calling in life. Both are active people involved in life in many ways and they enjoy the sense of purpose in life and the rewards that come from helping others as part of this program. There are so many people in our community who are living alone and don’t have family members in the area. Most children of seniors are working and raising

their families and aren’t as available as they’d like to be for their parents. Being socially isolated has many potentially negative effects on an individual’s physical and mental health. The Home Visitation Program helps to provide the socialization that we all need. To qualify for visits a person needs to be a resident of Genesee County, socially isolated and sixty years of age or older. Our program is non-denominational and is staffed by volunteers so there is no cost to participate. Our volunteers must be over age eighteen, and all are interviewed and trained. We check references and do a background check on everyone before they make home visits. I think the strongest statement for our program came from Don as we were preparing to leave. He said that because of their friendship with Ken and Judy, even though he has health problems that make it impossible to get out and do things he used to do, he is happier now than he has ever been in his life. He has things to look forward to that he enjoys every week. The Home Visitation Program is one of the Muriel H. Marshall programs in Genesee County. The Program is administered by Catholic Charities. If you or a loved one could benefit from home visits or are interested in being able to volunteer for such a great program, call Sandy or Linda at Catholic Charities at 585-343-0614.

Your Arthritis linked to another condition People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients. What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage. Symptoms Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include · morning stiffness and tiredness; · tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons; · swollen fingers and toes;

· reduced range of motion; · nail changes, including pitting, and · redness and pain in the eyes. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam. Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-thecounter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis.org/psa-screening.
SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.
