NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I understand that the overuse of antibiotics can harm the good bacteria in the intestinal tract, as well as the bad. While I don’t feel that I am abusing antibiotics, I have been prescribed two courses in the past five years. I wonder what action can be taken to try to ensure that balance in my gut is restored. -- M.L. ANSWER: We are just beginning to understand the beneficial effect of bacteria living in our intestine, and there is preliminary evidence that antibiotics might have adverse long-term effects due to loss of healthy bacteria. I think the most important message from this is to use antibiotics as little as possible, but two courses in five years is certainly modest. The use of probiotics (healthy bacteria) might help prevent growth of harmful bacteria, improve the immune system, reduce pain and improve the function of the gut lining. I don’t think probiotics are necessary after the occasional course of antibiotics. However, it is reasonable to consider probiotics in some situations, including in people with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), in cases of infectious diarrhea and perhaps in people with irritable bowel syndrome. Commercial probiotics are expensive, not FDA-approved and aren’t proven to treat or cure any disease as of yet. Yogurt often is recommended, but not all yogurt contains live healthy bacteria. Even in the ones that do, many of the bacteria are killed by our stomach acid. Other fermented dairy products, such as kefir, have higher concentrations of bacteria. Both of these might be problematic in people with lactose intolerance (which can happen to anyone temporarily after a bout of infectious diarrhea) *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My domestic partner’s body heat is always very warm. We keep our home at 75 degrees F, and she complains that the house is too hot. Even at night when I touch her, I can feel the heat on her body. What do you think might be causing this to happen? Is this normal? She is in her mid-60s. -- C.B. ANSWER: It is not at all abnormal for people to have different temperatures at which they feel comfortable, and 75 degrees F is on the warm side of comfort for many. One way that our bodies regulate temperature is through blood flow to the extremities. When the blood vessels are open, the person will feel quite warm to the touch, and when trying to conserve heat, the skin feels cold and clammy. If she is really bothered by it, it might be worth thinking about two common medical issues: hyperthyroidism and vasomotor instability of menopause. In hyperthyroidism, the entire metabolism is enhanced, so the person is warm all the time. A simple blood test can confirm this diagnosis. In a woman in her 60s, it is common to have periods of vasomotor instability, usually called hot flashes. In these, the blood vessels open up and the woman becomes uncomfortably hot for a few minutes. It is possible that one of these could be happening for your partner. However, sometimes variations in normal physiology can fool the physician into thinking there is a problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. The Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District broke ground today on major renovations that will be occurring at all of the District’s facilities. The project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2020. Renovations include the Transportation and Facilities Department being merged on a single site at the existing bus garage. This will allow the renovation of the High School parking lots and the main entrance to provide enhanced security and safety. The Phase II Capital Project also includes extensive masonry restoration to the historic section of the original High School building. The High School will also house new tennis courts, a contemporary cafeteria, modern art classrooms, enhanced technology labs, new HVAC (Heat, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) control systems, moisture mitigation, upgraded light fixtures in select locations, and additional water bottle filling stations. The Manor School (grades 2-5) will receive a significant renovation. The art, nursing, and counseling offices will be renovated and expanded. Enhancements will be made to the main offices, fire alarms, and public address systems. Complete classroom renovations including bathroom, paint, storage, HVAC, and select power upgrades will also be made. The addition of a flexible learning lab, new playground equipment, enhanced safety features, and mechanical and ventilation upgrades will be found throughout the facility. Expanded classrooms will include vocal music, the flexible learning space, and the school cafeteria at Manor. At the District’s Middle School (grades 68) a second multi-purpose turf field will be installed. This location will house both baseball and softball fields as well as a large rectangular field. The District’s Auditorium will be modernized with presentation and sound enhancements. At Lima Primary (K-1) select exterior brick reconstruction will be completed, renovations will be made to the main office, and nurse’s suite and selective carpet replacement in key rooms will be completed. An elevator to the second floor will be added. Mechanical improvements to air quality and stormwater drainage will be completed. “I would like to say thank you to our community and the citizens who voted on the Phase II referendum in May of 2016. This is

Groundbreaking, digging in! such an exciting time for Honeoye Falls-Lima to be renovating our campus as we begin to celebrate fifty years of the merged school districts of Honeoye Falls and Lima,” said Superintendent Gene Mancuso. “Since 1969 HF-L has been a beacon of strength in the community and I am honored to be part of this groundbreaking. This is an exciting time for our students, our district, and our community.” In May of 2016, District voters approved this capital project expenditure of $29,986,084. This investment maximizes the building aid received from New York State and uses more than four million dollars in capital reserves. The remaining local share of this capital project will be funded through an anticipated increase of $63 per average homeowner over the next three years. “On behalf of the board, we would like to thank the community for supporting Phase II of our Long Range District Facilities Plan,” said Amy West, HF-L Board of Education President. “We are excited to break ground on our new instructional, transportation, and athletic facilities.” Phase I of the Long Range Capital Project was completed in 2013. Phase I addressed renovations and infrastructure improvements at all of the buildings, site work to improve safety and traffic flow, the addition of space for the arts at the Middle School, athletic field upgrades and additions, the introduction of solar panels and other energy efficiencies, and the redesign of science and technology classrooms, as well as the purchase of related equipment and furniture. The Phase II Capital Project is focused on protecting the community’s investment in its school buildings and grounds, enhancing the safety and security of these facilities, improving energy efficiency, reducing ongoing maintenance costs and meeting the needs of the instructional and activity program for the years ahead.

FESTIVE IDEAS FOR YOUR FALL CELEBRATIONS (NAPSI)—Cooler weather and autumn flavors, such as crisp hard cider, go hand in hand. The fall brings several reasons for celebrations; here are a few ideas to bring out the warmth of the season: 1. Embrace chill moments. When gathering your friends around a fire pit or sitting alfresco on a cool night, be sure to take out a few blankets for guests to wrap themselves in.

2. Warm them up from the inside out. As for the food, you can have a barbecue, or serve family style from hot pots full of chili or stew. Try dishes that are seasonal or showcase seasonal ingredients, such as an Apple-Stuffed Pork Loin Roast using Angry Orchard hard cider (see recipe below). And don’t forget dessert! With hot apple pie, cider doughnuts and pumpkin treats, you can’t go wrong. 3. Incorporate seasonal decor. Autumn is filled with bountiful harvests. From pumpkins and gourds, apples to squash, flowers aren’t the only items to spruce up your gatherings. Also, try using them together! Using a large pumpkin as a vase for a beautiful flower arrangement is a sure way to impress your guests. 4. Drink to the season. Take to the season with an iconic autumn sip: hard apple cider. Crisp and refreshing, terrific on its own or in a cocktail, Angry Orchard hard cider offers a cider style for everyone!

Exp. 11/15/18

Angry Orchard’s flagship style, Crisp Apple, delivers a bright, crisp apple flavor, and adds the perfect balance of sweetness and bright acidity—a true fall classic. Also available: Angry Orchard’s newest style, Rosé Cider. Made with rare, red-flesh apples from France, each apple adds an irresistibly rosy hue and apple-forward taste with a refreshingly dry finish. Who said rosé was only for the summer months? Both styles are available in 12-oz. bottles and cans.

Black pepper, as needed Preheat oven to 325°. Lay pork loin on a cutting board and, using a sharp knife, make small cuts, lengthwise, and butterfly; you want to end up with a rectangle of pork approximately 1” thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper and set aside. In a sauté pan over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions, apples and sage, and cook for 3 minutes until just softened; season with salt and pepper. Spread apple/onion mix evenly across pork and gently roll back into a cylinder, tying with kitchen string as needed; place in baking pan. In a small bowl, whisk together cider, mustard and oil until combined; smear all over exterior of pork loin. Place in oven and cook until center reads at 145° with a thermometer; remove and let stand for 10 minutes before carving. Complement these fall flavors with a refreshing hard cider cocktail: Spiced Orchard 4 oz. Angry Orchard Crisp Apple 1 oz. Aged Rum 0.5 oz. Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup 0.5 oz. Lemon Juice 1 dash Angostura Bitters Method: Heat all ingredients on the stove until warm. Pour into a toddy glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick and grated nutmeg. Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

Your 10 early signs of Alzheimer’s disease Change plays a big role in the aging process. As adults age, both their minds and bodies undergo changes. The changes associated with aging are not uniform. Some people may experience small changes as they inch toward and ultimately pass retirement age, while others may undergo changes that affect nearly every aspect of their lives. Cognitive decline is the type of age-related change that can have a dramatic impact on a person’s life, affecting his or her ability to live independently. A general term used to describe symptoms associated with a decline in memory or thinking skills such as judgment and reasoning, dementia is often mistaken as a normal part of aging. However, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America notes that dementia-related illnesses, including Alzheimer’s disease, are not a normal part of aging. Because many people associate memory loss with aging, they may be compelled to accept some of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s as mere byproducts of growing older. However, the Alzheimer’s Association urges men 5. DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep your feelings to yourself as you work through an awkward circumstance. Complaining is useless, and also unwise since your words could come back to haunt you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A sudden flash of Bovine practicality shows you how you might be able to turn your artistic pursuits into a profitable venture. A spouse or partner offers some sage advice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be prepared with several “Plan Bs” that you might have to use as backups just in case you encounter some troublesome complications with your carefully constructed schedule. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You might think you’ll never have a free moment again with the demands of the workplace piling on. Cheer up. The pressure eases as holiday time nears. An old friend brings good news. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine pride might make it difficult to offer an apology to a co-worker you unintentionally offended. But a quick and sincere “I’m sorry” could prevent problems down the line. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to tackle those backed-up chores that have kept you from moving into other, potentially more worthwhile projects. A personal matter needs your attention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You usually have no problem rushing to the defense of someone you perceive as being treated unjustly. But perceptions could be deceiving this week. Check the facts before you act. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before you point fingers at who might be to blame for the unexpected change in your plans, take a few moments to reflect on how this turn of events might be a blessing in disguise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You seek out advice in the first part of the week. But be careful not to let counsel from others overshadow your own sense of perception. Things become clearer by the week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The trusted colleagues you relied on earlier continue to offer support with your project. But you take more control, and by the week’s end, you should be in full command. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Rely on your practical side while exploring investment possibilities. Caution is still your watchword in these matters. Your social life takes a gratifying turn by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An already confusing situation appears to grow murkier during the first part of the week. But it all starts to clear by the week’s end. Plan to spend the weekend with someone special. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a passion for life that inspires others to follow your example. You could be a motivational speaker. I recently found ripped up pieces of paper on one of my town's back roads. I was surprised to find they were seemingly diary pages! And they were dated just a couple of weeks ago. Let's just say they made me cry. It was a poetic love letter expressing one’s feelings for someone else. It was beautifully composed, with so much heartache in it. I am hoping the writer will see this. If you do, please contact me at wheniamold260@gmail.com. I want to know your story. Thank you for letting me realize there are many triumphs, heartaches and breaks. But

there is also hope. Hope and redemption. I recently submitted a request to Give & Take for a small fridge for our church’s Youth Ministry room. Within a week I had received two offers! I am blessed by the generosity of these two individuals but also by the Penny Saver’s commitment to publishing this wonderful and helpful feature! Hats off to Livingston County Pizza on Rochester Street in Avon. Your pizza is wonderful. Your service is excellent. Keep up the good work! Diane

You allowed your toddler to scream for 40 minutes in the area's largest grocery store this morning. You should be ashamed of yourself for telling

To the individual complaining about farmers spreading manure, New York State has right-to-farm laws. If you do not like the smells associated with agriculture, you should move to the city. Also, the world does not revolve around you and your schedule; farmers are not going to wait until it is 90 degrees to do a task that needs to get done. You come here from [another country] because you can receive a free wheelchair for

people "that's just what toddlers do". No, it's what terrible parents of toddlers do. People were removing their hearing aids because of you. People were leaving the store because of you. If you're not going to teach your child to behave properly, leave him at home. Why do so many people feel it is OK to pull into oncoming traffic just because something is blocking their lane? I'm sorry that the delivery truck or lawn service is parked on your side, but that means you need to STOP and wait for me to pass before you proceed to drive around.

Thank you so much for my relatives, friends and neighbors! You have all helped me out so much! Thank you to Patrick Kelly, Rory Hoskins, Brenda and Chuck Ferugie, Mary McDonald, Frankie Lapoma, Ronald Wall, Dominic, Jeff Hayes, Fred Webb and Mike Cuozzo and Bill Coffey. God Bless You! Patty Kelly

A few days ago I was in Walmart in Batavia, not having any success finding what I needed. Went to Customer

Service; the lady said this young man may be able to help you. (wish I could remember his name). He had a hand-held gadget and said, "Follow me." Eureka! Found all the items I was looking for! What a contrast to the woman who was checking me out in a store that is closing soon no eye contact; she was carrying on a conversation with a coworker.

your child; something that would have cost many thousands of dollars in [your country]. You live in a 3-bedroom subsidized housing apartment with a utility allowance deducted from the rent. Ramps were added to your building for easy wheelchair access. However, out front of your apartment you fly [your country's] flag. Pretty ungrateful aren't you?

mulch for the past two years, never plant a flower; never wash the exterior windows, paid to have a flunky company wash the exterior of the building (but not the windows!) which left stains ALL over the siding....a mess which no one has ever addressed. One picnic table for 32 residents, no shaded area for senior citizens to sit; no chairs, No nothing! Wake up.

With 60 new apartments going up next door that offer free air conditioning, free laundry facilities, free flat screen TV, free basic cable, free microwave ovens, and all utilities free, I would be sprucing up this complex before you lose all of your good tenants. Instead, you raise the price of one load of laundry to $4.00; never mulch these grounds even though the maintenance man has prepared all trees and shrubs for

To the driver in the car who nearly rear-ended me, then proceeded to "shoot" me "finger guns," tailgate me, then gunned it and flipped me off once I turned to [local store], yeah, I was the young girl in the other car. Sad to see grown men act like children. Actually, a child would have more decency. Sorry you were in such a rush. I actually commend you for at least not beeping at me!

While shopping at Aldi's a couple of weeks ago a very generous lady behind me paid for my groceries. Thanks again!

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
