Your 3 tips to overcome everyday aches and pains Pain is a significant concern for many people. Estimates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in five adults across the globe suffer from pain. Pain can affect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suffered an injury while playing a sport or performing another physical activity. For example, lower back pain, which can be caused by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain in the United States. Such pain may be unavoidable, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday aches and pains cannot be overcome. 1. Begin a well-rounded exercise regimen. Regular exercise that includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow and helps build a strong core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the pressure on it, making it less likely people who sit for long stretches at a time will end the day with lower back pain. Routine exercise also helps other areas of the body by keeping muscles loose and flexible. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women, especially those with existing aches and pains, should consult their physicians about which exercises they should do and which they might want to avoid. 2. Employ RICE. RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can help men and women overcome the aches and pains that result as the body ages and tendons begin to lose some of their elasticity. RICE might be most helpful for people who have been diagnosed with tendinitis. Athletes over 40 who engage in activities that require repetitive motion might need to take more days off between rounds of golf or other competitive and/or repetitive activities. If tendinitis
ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.
flares up, take some time away, icing any sore areas, wrapping them in bandages, and elevating them while resting. Athletes rarely want to sit on the sidelines, but a few days off can go a long way toward alleviating the pain associated with tendinitis. 3. Recognize your body may develop some limitations. Age should not prevent you from being physically active, and numerous studies have touted the benefits of continuing to exercise into your golden years. However, as the body ages, muscle fibers become less dense, resulting in a loss of flexibility that increases the risk of injury and/or soreness. As men and women grow older, they shouldn’t abandon activities like gardening or strength training. But they may need to scale back on the intensity with which they perform such activities. Doing so can prevent the kinds of muscle strains associated with aging. Pain affects more than one billion people across the globe. But some simple strategies can help people overcome pain and enjoy a rich quality of life.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Strange ‘Pimples’ Are Rare Disease --DEAR DR. ROACH: After having several strange-looking “pimples” on my thighs and one on my face, I was told it is lymphomatoid papulosis. One or two people in a million are diagnosed with this. I know that it is not contagious, but what is it? What causes it, how is it treated, and what can I do to avoid these? They take weeks to heal. -- R.R. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease. It is in the category of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. It is a chronic disease, and lasts years or even decades. The underlying cause is not known exactly, but it is related in many ways to other lymphoproliferative diseases, such as mycosis fungoides and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The cells of the skin lesions you notice have similar genetic rearrangements as lymphoma cells. Fortunately, LyP has an excellent prognosis, although people with LyP are at increased risk for developing one of these serious conditions. The papules of LyP can appear on the extremities or the hands and face, and less commonly on other places on the body. They may start off as small red papules, get larger and then crust over. Often, several exist at different stages. Diagnosis may not be easy, as it takes an experienced dermatopathologist (pathologist with special training in skin diseases) and enough tissue to look at the genetics of the cells. Treatment is not necessary for every person with LyP. But for those who do require it, one might be ultraviolet-light treatment. More severe cases may require methotrexate, but this needs to be managed by an expert. Experts have recommended six-month visits to evaluate for early signs of enlarging lymph nodes, which might indicate the development of a lymphoproliferative disorder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion, as a noninterested party, on laser therapy. I see many ads touting its advantages and success in treating bone-on-bone knee osteoarthritis. My orthopedic doctor recommended knee replacements on both my knees. I had arthroscopic surgery on the left knee four years ago and was recommended total knee replacement on the right knee about three years ago. How long can I put off surgery, and what is the outlook if I don’t have it done? I am an 80-year-old female in good health, except for the osteoarthritis. I use naproxen when needed. If it works, I think laser therapy would be less pain and downtime. ANSWER: Low-level laser therapy has been studied in people with osteoarthritis, and some of the studies have shown reductions in pain and stiffness. The laser is thought to have an effect on circulation. However, the laser generally has been effective in people with mild to moderate disease, and bone-on-bone is severe. I think laser may help some people, but some of the benefit probably is due to placebo effect. As far as putting off your knee replacements, I have been through this many times with my own patients. Some get it done right away; others avoid surgery until they can’t take it any longer, with worsening pain, stiffness and inability to exercise. Most people have told me that they wish they had done the surgery sooner. By the way, I am interested in helping people, but have no conflicts of interest. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FAIRPORT David Marsh, A Life of Courage Born in 1940, David Marsh contracted rheumatic fever at age six leading to many hospital stays and a life bound to a wheelchair. However, due to the compassion of the Fairport community, he was able to realize many of his dreams before his 1964 death. Recently, his sister donated many of his favorite items to the Perinton Historical Society and are on exhibit through 2018 at the Fairport Museum (18 Perrin St.), helping visitors remember and honor his short life. DID YOU KNOW? Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The arts are a strong part of the Arian aspect, with music becoming more dominant. An important decision looms as a longtime relationship takes an unexpected turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Surrounding yourself with beautiful things helps restore the Taurean soul. Enjoy an art exhibit, for example. Or redecorate your personal space with something truly splendid. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Some colleagues might try to talk you out of what they insist is a risk, but which you consider an opportunity. As usual, follow your own good sense when making your decision. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) A workplace change you might have worried about soon proves to be highly favorable for the clever Crab who is ready to take advantage of new opportunities opening up. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Congratulations. Your Leonine pride is polished to a dazzling new brilliance thanks to your success in winning support for your new project from even the most doubtful of detractors. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettling rumor about a colleague’s apparently regrettable behavior is soon proved groundless, allowing you to enjoy the upcoming end-of-year festivities in a happy mood. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your success in helping to create a harmonious environment out of a chaotic situation earns you the admiration of someone who could become an important new presence in your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your Scorpion’s sense of loyalty could find you leading a passionate defense of a loved one you feel is being unfairly treated. The week’s end brings long-awaited family news. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your keen instincts are once more on high alert as you find yourself being pressured to make a quick decision about a certain matter. More facts come to light by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) An unexpected workplace development could disrupt some family plans. A full explanation, however, averts domestic discord. A financial matter continues to need attention. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Spend time away from distractions to reassess some recent moves that might not have worked out as you had hoped. What you learn could be invaluable for future decision-making. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recent act of kindness is a reminder of how important your friends are to you. You might want to show your appreciation by hosting a special preNew Year’s party just for them. On Marsh Road, off Route 31 between Pittsford and Perinton, sits Powers Farm Market. The market itself offers homemade goods and foodstuffs throughout much of the year. However, Powers also hosts events throughout the year. Their store property contains paths, which isn’t too surprising, considering it is nearly on the edge of Perinton, one of New York State’s Top Ten Trail Towns. For several years, at Christmastime, they have created and hosted a unique Nativity display along a trail loop in the wooded area next to their store. This Nativity story is told in scenes, usually about four of them, and guests are welcome to walk around the trail from scene to scene. These typically consist of life-size, dark cutout figures, lights and other props and decorations. There is also an audio recording, and visitors can press a button to hear the narrative for each scene as they go along. As guests come around the last bend in the loop, the final scene comes into view. It is a stable scene with moving Mary and Joseph figures, a Baby Jesus figure, live animals inside the fencing, real hay, everything lit up beautifully. The experience is intended to be like coming upon the first Christmas so long ago. Visiting and interacting with the Nativity is free of charge, and along with the Nativity story and moving Nativity scene with live animals, there are several other live animals which are a part of the Powers Farm Market. These animals are available to be fed, and feed for them is offered outdoors in quarter

Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus machines as well as indoors for purchase. These animals include rabbits, goats, donkeys, alpacas, chickens, sheep and deer. Children enjoy the novelty of storytelling scenes, moving features and the live animals of the Nativity, as well. It is perhaps a true expression of Christmas spirit; however, to generously provide a holiday experience -a celebration of the Nativity which everyone, young and old, rich or poor, is free to enjoy. It brings all sorts of people together, just as shepherds and kings were both welcome that first Christmas. So, join in the fun and festivities, walk the trail, listen to the story, see the animals, maybe even sip some hot cocoa and nibble some cookies. The Christmas Spirit is alive and well at Powers Farm Market!

Is it true that the COLD weather brings “pests” inside the house??
YES it is!

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.
KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS W INTER M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Shortman is an 18-year-old red dun and white colored paint horse. My parents bought him for me five years ago for 4H and to help with my anxiety. Shortman has anxiety just like I do and doesn’t like new environments. He acts younger than his age but is very fun loving & curious. He likes to push around barrels & exercise balls as well as roll in the snow making snow Pegasus. Shortman is now used for mounted archery and hunter pace jumping competitions. He did not like jumping when we bought him but now, he gets eager when he sees jumps are set up. He is 15 hands tall (5 ft. at his back, like his owner) and 1,100 lbs. Shortman likes orange tic tacs, candy corn and molasses. He has been the best therapist, teacher and friend to his now 21-year-old owner.

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased.

Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

Congratulations to the Caledonia Fire Department for taking first place in the Scottsville Parade of Lights truck decorating contest. Great job! Just wanted to give a shout out to anyone who has outside decorations up and lit during the early mornings and afternoons. I drive a school bus for pre-k kids and it makes their day as we run around town picking up kids. I hear a lot of ahhhs and ooos. Thanks...it gives the kids something to watch for instead of "are we there yet". P.S. I would remind people to pay attention and not run the stop signs on the busses...it is a BIG ticket and points on your license.

I must vent to the person who moved into an apartment complex. You must remember, it's a lot different than living in your own home. If you're a younger Homeowner, please consider your elderly neighbors, don't leave them to pick up all YOUR blowing leaves....... I don't have 1 tree, you do & only once did you blow your leaves, 3 weeks ago, but you put it in front of our mail boxes & near the sign so the town couldn't pick them up. The storm drain is covered, so when it rained these past 3 weeks, I've had to use boots to get my mail due to the huge puddle...... I paid to have my yard raked twice, but your yard is still full. This is getting expensive. Please think of your elderly neighbors. Happy Holidays!!! PS this Santa isn't
giving you guys anything this year. Yeah, I’m not happy. I'm traveling straight, bus makes a left in front of me. In turning lane, woman who was on my bumper passed me, and there was a car in left lane. she couldn’t wait to shop, I guess. Who passes someone in a turning lane? Obviously an impatient too much in a hurry person. In a parking lot, salt sprayer spraying salt in parking lot, sprayed it all over me and the [person] had a smile on his face. Woman continually stopping and braking, letting everybody go across road, letting people turn left, kept on doing it, and my car skidded stopping, I had to keep watching her. Yes, I was doing the speed limit. No, I wasn’t tailgating. I’ll renew my license next year, but who really wants to?
