Penny Saver Pet of the Week Missy is a husky lab mix & would love to tell you about it! She was a rescue after a hurricane in Mississippi– So we named her Mississippi, Missy for short. She may be older but you could never tell, she still acts just like a puppy. When you pull into the driveway Missy will come running to you with a paw in the air waving hi! Some of her favorite things are her family, being outside, hiding bones in the dirt, getting loved & digging a hole in the garden and sitting in it. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

GET GIFTS THERE ON TIME Research shipping options. In 2018, Christmas falls on a Tuesday. Shoppers who plan to rely on two-day or overnight shipping should keep that in mind. Some delivery services may be open throughout the weekend before Christmas, while others may only be open on Saturday. Last-minute shoppers, whether they’re shopping online or in-person, should confirm their shipping options well in advance of Christmas. Because Christmas is on a Tuesday this year, getting gifts to their destination on time may require shoppers to purchase and ship them earlier than they otherwise might.

Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office. In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees. Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice

--DEAR DR. ROACH: What effect, if any, does alcohol consumption have on swelling in the legs, ankles and feet? I drink only when I go out for dinner or have guests, typically a cocktail and a glass of wine; no swelling in those instances. However, I noticed that after a few days on vacation, when I drank more than two glasses of wine every night, my lower legs, ankles and feet began to swell. Once I returned home and resumed no daily alcohol consumption, the swelling abated. So, is there a connection? -- B.A. ANSWER: The physiology of alcohol is complex, with potentially adverse effects on the heart, the liver and on secretion of anti-diuretic hormone. All of these can affect swelling. However, it is entirely possible, and probably more likely, that it is a combination of travel and increased sodium intake that is responsible for your most recent swelling. Even in healthy young volunteers, alcohol immediately reduces the ability of the heart to squeeze out blood. Usually the heart returns to normal after the alcohol is metabolized, but in some people, the heart dilates over time, resulting in heart failure (swelling in the feet has many causes, but heart failure is one of the biggest concerns). In the liver, longstanding alcohol use affects the liver’s ability to synthesize proteins. Reduced levels of the blood protein albumin also might cause leg swelling. Both heart and liver effects are very mild except in people who already have disease of these organs. The role of vasopressin, also called anti-diuretic hormone, is complex. Initial inhibition of ADH leads to an increase in urine production, then an increased level of the hormone, which can lead to water and salt retention and swelling. Even though there are at least three ways alcohol can lead to or worsen edema, it is likely that it’s simply swelling from sitting and standing too much, which commonly occurs in travel, combined with a greater sodium intake from eating out at restaurants. Sodium content at many restaurants is much higher than if you prepare your own food. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been dealing with a problem for a very long time. I’d like to have someone tell me how to stop my eyes from tearing and my nose from running every time I go out in the cold weather. I’ve been given pills (Claritin and Benadryl) and sprays (Nasacort, Beconase), and although they help me breathe better, I still fill up with tears and mucus. I’d like to know if you’ve ever run across these symptoms. -- S.R.M. ANSWER: These symptoms are not only common, they are nearly universal. One of the body’s protections against cold weather is to increase fluid flow to the eyes and nose, as the cold, dry air evaporates their protective moisture. Almost everybody has had the experience of a runny nose after being out in the cold, especially when first coming into a warm room. In some people, the normal response is so strong that it becomes very annoying. It’s a type of nonallergic vasomotor rhinitis. I have had frequent success in prescribing nasal antihistamines, such as azelastine, or an anticholinergic drug like ipratropium, if the treatments you have tried haven’t worked. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

Great gifts for beloved seniors By the time they reach senior status, many adults have amassed a ton of stuff along with their irreplaceable knowledge. Come their golden years, grandparents and other aging loved ones probably don’t need much in the way of material possessions, which can make it challenging to find them holiday gifts. Finding great gifts for seniors may take a little more effort, but with these ideas at the ready, it’s likely gift-givers can make this holiday merry for everyone on their shopping lists. Family photo memories Many seniors love to talk about their life histories. What better way to be the catalyst for conversation than to create a photo album that chronicles their lives? Photos can be included alongside historical documents, such as old school projects, military discharge papers, awards, and even genealogical information. Photo puzzles, photo calendars and any home decor with a photo printed on it are variations on this theme. Assistance gifts Seniors want to remain as independent as possible. By giving items that help them do just that, you can bring smiles to their faces. One idea is motion-sensing light switches and fixtures. If and when nature calls in the middle of the night, hallways or bathrooms can be illuminated effortlessly. Shower and bathroom grab bars are another idea. These provide extra security and stability when getting in and out of the shower or when using the toilet. For seniors who just need a little extra reach, a grab tool can easily snag packages from a top shelf or pick up items that may have dropped to the floor, eliminating bending or straining. Practical technology Seniors may not be as immersed in technology as young people, but they purchase their share of gadgets and increasingly rely on tech to

get through the day. To free up more time for rest and relaxation,

invest in an iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum. This simple device will clean floors easily, moving from room to room without the need for a bulky canister or upright vacuum. Consider an easy-to-use tablet, preloaded with handy applications. Grandparents can use video chatting to keep in touch with grandchildren living across the country. Easily refill prescription medication with a pharmacy app just a click away. Stream favorite movies or channels through video streaming sites, like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Tablets tend to be lightweight, portable and user-friendly. Personal care

Even independent seniors may benefit from a little extra companionship and assistance when family members are not able to make frequent visits. Hiring a visiting care worker, who can do everything from organizing pills to making dinner to tackling some laundry, can provide the help seniors need with their daily errands. Seniors are a thriving and growing demographic. It may seem challenging to purchase gifts for older loved ones, but with a little know-how, it’s easy to find the right present.

East Rochester’s Christmas Festival Nods to Italian Heritage

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2018

Puzzle Answers Crossword Puzzle

By Amanda Dudek For a Christmas celebration with an Italian flair, look no further than the East Rochester Christmas Festival to be held on Saturday, December 8th from 10am to 4pm. Classic holiday goodies will be offered as well as crafts and activities for younger guests. Local businesses will participate in offering goods and contributing to the raffles. The streets will ring with Christmas carols as a horse-drawn wagon offers tours around Edmund Lyon Park. Those who wanted to get into the Christmas spirit early went to the tree lighting and live Nativity scene at Nicholas Verzella Gazebo on Sunday, December 2nd. Saturday morning kicks off with the PTA’s Breakfast with Santa from 9am-11am at the ER Elementary School. Guests can also purchase additional pizza, hot chocolate and coffee from 10am-12:30pm if they would like. Information and complimentary food will be available at the Eyer Building from 10:30am and throughout the rest of the day, including maps and schedules, popcorn, cookies and coffee. The ER Girl Scouts will offer baked goods from 11am-4pm. Pizza and Mr. V’s Food Cart will be available from 11:45am-4pm, as well. Activities abound, especially for children. Cookie decorating will be offered in the 6-12 Cafeteria on the ER School Campus from 10am-12:30pm. Festivities in the Eyer Building will begin with window decorating from 11am1pm. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available to take wishes and photos with your little ones from 12pm-2pm. The Book Nook, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will offer a book to each child, as a gift. The library will also host STEAM activities for children from 12pm4pm. Meanwhile, the Rotary will sponsor an ornament-making activity. Face painting will be available from 1pm-4pm, and a stuffed olives “Throw Down,” sponsored by the St. Nicholas Society, will be held from 2pm-3pm. Some parents and other adult visitors may find themselves more interested in the Advent Craft Sale, sponsored by the ER Association of churches, to be held from 9am-3pm in the ER Schools Gymnasium. Adults may also be interested in attending the Christmas Italianstyle Fundraiser the night before on Friday, December 7th at St. Nicholas Hall from 6pm9pm. Tickets are $25 available in advance at Vita Bella Organic Salon and on the Margaret

Home’s Facebook page, $30 at the door. Proceeds will go to benefit the Margaret Home and Veterans Outreach. Still, all guests, young and old, are sure to enjoy the horse-drawn wagon tours around Edmund Lyon Park, which will be offered about every half hour from approximately noon until 3:45pm. Raffles will also be held during this event. The Taste of ER Raffle offers $50 gift certificates to 14 East Rochester restaurants. Raffle entry tickets are $5 and are available at various businesses across East Rochester as well as at both East Rochester Christmas Festival venues. The 1st place winner will choose six, the 2nd place winner five and the 3rd place winner will receive the remaining three. Also available will be the ER Chamber of Commerce “Holiday Trail” raffles with prizes worth at least $100 donated by 24 businesses. These raffle entry tickets are $1 or $10 for a dozen, and proceeds benefit the scholarship for an ER High School Senior. The ER Rotary will be presenting their Treasured Italian Recipes cookbooks at both venues just in time for the holidays, also. They will be sold for $15 apiece or 2 for $25. Holiday music and caroling will not be lacking either. In the ER 6-12 Cafeteria, the 4th/5th Grade Chorus will perform at 10:30am; the Senior High Select Choir at 11am and the 3rd Grade Chorus at 11:30am. Live entertainment will be available at the Eyer Building thanks to holiday music with John Alfieri from 11am-4pm. The La Belafana Tale, sponsored by the St. Nicholas Society, will be told from 2-2:15pm, and strolling carolers from St. John Bosco School will serenade visitors along West Commercial Street from 2pm-4pm. Finally, there will be carols from St. Jerome’s carillon starting at noon and coming to a close at 4pm along with the festival itself.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection.

The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Careful, Lamb. Don’t let your generous nature lead to some serious overspending as you contemplate your holiday gift-giving. Your social life kicks off into high gear by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A positive attitude helps you weather annoying but unavoidable changes in holiday plans. Aspects favor new friendships and reinforcement of existing relationships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Demands on your energy level could be much higher than usual as you prepare for the upcoming holidays. Be sure to pace yourself. Friends and family will be happy to help. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Don’t allow a suddenly icy reaction from a friend or family member to continue without learning what caused it -- and what can be done to restore that once warm and caring relationship. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A relationship seems to be unraveling, mostly from a lack of attention. It might be a good idea to ease up on whatever else you’re doing so you can spend more time working to mend it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) New facts emerge that not only help explain the recent rift with a trusted colleague, but also might provide a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start in your friendship. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s personal situation is, fortunately, resolved in time for you to get back into your hectic round of holiday preparations. An old friend might bring a new friend into your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Pace yourself in meeting holiday pressures and workplace demands to avoid winding up with a frayed temper and a Scorpian stinger that lashes out at puzzled kith, kin and colleagues. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A financial matter requires close attention. Also, news from a trusted source provides the means to help sort out a long-standing state of confusion and put it into perspective. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to reinforce family ties. Make it a priority to assess and resolve all outstanding problems. Start the upcoming holiday season with a full measure of love. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Don’t be pressured into a so-called solid-gold investment. Wait until the holiday distractions are over. Then take a harder look at it. You might find that the “gold” is starting to flake off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A former friend might be trying to heal the breach between you by using a mutual friend as an intermediary. Best advice: Keep an open mind despite any lingering bad feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of saying the right thing at the right time. Your friendships are deep and lasting. Your store makes me upset. I am told I need to use an app to find things, and I'm challenged when it comes to my smart phone. I'm an older lady, that has certain challenges anyhow. You think good customer service is out of style, and I must use an app to find things. What happened to your employees taking time to help me and others for that matter? Is being nice and helping people find things out of style at your store, so you just throw me under the bus because I'm unable to use the technology? I'm tired of asking your employees where things are just to be thrown a blank stare and told, "I don't know" while making no move to help me. Is

Say thank you to the drivers, it's a difficult job driving the big yellow machine and keeping order on the bus.

Thank you, Mayor Tom Freeman, for helping an old neighbor. We appreciated your help. It was so thoughtful of you to take the time and talk to the volunteers at the Polling stations to find out where my correct Voting location was. Your act of kindness touched our hearts. Dave & daughter

The right-to-farm does not give farmers the right to pollute the soil, water or air. I realize we depend on farmers for our food but they must live on the land, drink the water and breath the air too! And many people who live in the country have been there a long time. (There's one local farm that boasts about being in business since the early 1800s; how many cows did they have then?!) Whoever stole the A-Frame sign advertising the Dec. 8th (local town) Scouts Craft Show on the

corner of (local roads) Gas Station this past weekend, you should be ashamed of yourself. The sign cost the scouts over $70 to make. This event is a fundraiser for the Scouts and the proceeds go directly to individual scouts to help pay for summer camp as well as other Scouting expenses. You stole from every (local town) Boy Scout and the volunteers who help provide the Scouting program for them. It is hard for me to imagine what your motivation would be for trying to hurt a young man's chance at attending summer Scout camp-Have a change of heart and return the sign no questions asked. On behalf of the (local town) Boy Scout Troop, I wish you a Merry Christmas.

MECHANIC NEEDED German Brothers Marina on beautiful Canandaigua Lake in upstate NY is currently seeking out an engine technician to join our team. Our Marina was founded in 1977 by brothers Peter and Rick German who still work daily on-site managing and assisting in the day-to-day operation of the marina. Along with boat sales, we also rent boats, provide summer and winter storage, have a full service gas dock and service department, as well as a retail store. Our full time staff is made up of seasoned employees that each have their own niche within the company and have helped German Brothers Marina to be so successful over the years. Now we are looking to take our service department to a new level and are hoping to find the right technician to help us reach that goal. We are looking for a technician with at least 5 years proven experience working on engines, marine experience is a plus. You will be responsible for troubleshooting minor and major repairs, as well as routine maintenance on boats and jet skis. Current Mercury, Mercruiser, Volvo or Yamaha certifications are preferred, but training is provided for our employees online and through instructor led classes to earn and maintain the proper certifications. We offer a competitive hourly rate based on experience and an outstanding benefits package including medical and dental insurance, paid holidays, sick time, vacation time and 401k. We also provide you with plenty of opportunity for high-paying overtime hours in the spring and fall. This is a full time, year round position and the opening is immediate! Can you imagine yourself getting paid to test drive luxury boats on beautiful Canandaigua Lake? Please send a cover letter and resume by email to Katie@germanbrothers.com or apply in person at 3907 West Lake Road Canandaigua, NY.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.
