Little Shadow is an 8 year old female Toy Poodle/Terrier mix who weighs 16 pounds. She came to Lollypop Farm to find a new home because there were too many pets in the home. Despite having a bit of a bad hair day, this sweet face more than makes up for it. A good grooming can turn her into a little beauty! Shadow is available free of charge to approved adopters, age 60 and over, through the Seniors-for-Seniors program. Come meet her at Lollypop Farm! INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Despite his determination to free the Irish from Druidism, Saint Patrick was initially met with much resistance from Irish natives. But his persistence would eventually pay off, as he convinced a growing number of Pagan Druids that they were worshiping idols under a belief system that was ensuring their captivity and not their salvation.

After the recent school shooting in Florida the push to arm school employees has increased in intensity. What is your opinion of arming school staff so they are prepared to protect students? • This is a terrible idea, they don’t need the added stress! • I’m all for it if it means that lives will be saved. • It would be better to hire trained professionals whose sole responsibility is to protect students. H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could have some problems with doubters who don’t share your enthusiasm for that new project you’re supporting. But use the facts to win them over to your side. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Someone is impressed by how you managed to get your case to the right people, despite attempts to keep you on the outside looking in. Expect to hear more about this. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good for you -- your gift for seeing both sides of a dispute helps cool down a potentially explosive workplace situation. Some family-related tensions also begin to ease. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your determination to prove yourself is put to the test by midweek. Counting all the positive factors you have going for you will help you get over your selfdoubt. Good luck. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Several co-workers are still determined to resist coming over to your side. But don’t let that stop you from presenting your proposal to the people who count. Stay the course. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might prefer to be taken on faith and not have to prove yourself. But the truth is, you need to offer more facts if you hope to persuade people to accept what you say. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family situation takes an unwelcome turn. While others might be looking around for answers, you’ll soon sort it all out logically, and the matter will be resolved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone might try to create doubt about your reliability for his or her own agenda. But your reputation and your colleagues’ long-standing faith in you saves the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected change of plans forces you to come up with an alternative by the end of the week. Look for colleagues to offer valuable suggestions. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Nothing upsets the Goat as much as broken promises. But before you vent your anger, consider that this could ultimately prove to be a blessing in disguise. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An old workplace problem you thought you had solved for good resurfaces. But this time, co-workers will take a more active role in helping you deal with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be careful not to be misled by a negative reaction to one of your more important projects. If you believe in it, then it has worth and is, therefore, worth staying with. BORN THIS WEEK: Everyone appreciates your gift for finding beauty, even where it seems least likely to exist. RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Undereye bags can cause shadows to form and increase the appearance of dark circles. To remedy this, try to reduce fluid pooling in the face. Sleep elevated on a few pillows so that fluid flows away from the eyes. Reduce consumption of alcohol and salty foods, which can exacerbate fluid retention. Cool compresses can be used to massage fluid gently away from the eyes as well.
--DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine autoinjector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Whenever someone is ill with most diseases, they are usually prescribed a drug or a medicine, or a pharmaceutical product. Why is it that cancer patients are treated with “chemo,” or “chemotherapy,” rather than one of the above? Is there a difference, or is it just semantics? Nobody I’ve asked seems to have an answer. -- D.G. ANSWER: To be honest, I was confused too, until medical school, where I learned that “chemotherapy” is just another word for a drug or medicine intended to treat a condition. We just normally reserve the term for drugs used to treat cancer. Although we tend to think of the side effects of chemotherapy as horrific, and some certainly are the most toxic substances we ever use, they vary widely in how well they are tolerated. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In August I had open repair of my right rotator cuff. I was told it was a severe tear with bone and tendon involvement. I am 67, and the recovery has been a long one. If you can believe it, even with physical therapy and pain management, I am still uncomfortable at times. I have a stupid question that I hope you can answer. Ever since surgery, I have had to sleep on my unaffected side. Is it OK for me to finally try sleeping on my right side? I don’t have another appointment at the orthopedic office. I am embarrassed, as it is one question I haven’t asked. -- C.V. ANSWER: It’s not a stupid question at all. I don’t think you will damage the surgery repair by sleeping on the shoulder now, and you certainly can try it to see if it feels uncomfortable. I also would recommend you continue the exercises your physical therapists gave you. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. He doesn't have to offer that but he respects what Veterans have given up (time out of their lives) in support of their country. I have gone to Dr. Marchese for a couple of years now and he not only does a great job, he's very friendly, asks about my family, and saves me and I'm sure other Veterans a lot of money. This past Veterans Day in November he offered free cleanings for Veterans. Ronald Jackett, USAF Veteran
I was walking my friend's dog the other day. I saw a small gray bag by a tree. I KNEW what it was having seen them before. If you clean up after your dog [Which you are supposed to do], PLEASE take it with you! Don't just leave it laying around for others to pick up. Think about it
What many Veterans, of whatever branch of service they were in, don’t know is that if they take a copy of their DD Form 214 with them and go to the Genesee County Clerk’s Office they’ll receive free, a card offering discounts from many businesses in the county and a brochure (flyer) from the “Return the Favor” program. Some merchants listed offer as much as 25% off to those who have served their country. My hats off to them! Ronald Jackett, USAF Veteran
Many thanks and deep appreciation to the couple who answered prayers from me and a handicapped gentleman. I had put a request in the Penny Saver looking for a scooter and 3 days after it came out I got a call saying they had one available. Thank you so much Gerry and Rita! The newfound freedom in the scooter is being enjoyed and we are awaiting summer for adventures. God Bless you both! Shirley
Haiku for our dog Tyson! Squirrels are outside. Tyson sees them off he sprints. Never catching one.
~ what would it look like if everyone did the same thing? Pick up after the dog, and just leave the open bag for someone else to pick up?
anyone can make mistakes!!! So much for the Christmas spirit?! It's time this country lightened up a little.
wherever they feel like it to drop off their kids, please stop... All you are doing is making the parents who are trying to follow the rules mad. The parking lot sucks, yes, there are a lot of cars/people, yes, but rules are there for a reason. Just because the safety officers are not out patrolling doesn't mean you are not affecting other parents just trying to get their kid(s) to school safely.
I recently stopped at [coffee shop] for a donut before I took my 2 y/o son into daycare and before I went to work... of course I didn't want to take my son into [coffee shop] when he was fussy and crying, so I left him in the car (with running heat!!! He wasn't cold!!) while I enjoyed a donut and caught up with a friend. Meanwhile some jerk called the cops on me for having my son relaxing in the car and not only was I questioned, but I was late to work!! I am a GOOD mom and
I wonder if people realize how frustrating or dangerous it is not to have your house number on your mailbox or house. It makes it almost impossible for emergency personnel or bus drivers to locate the houses. So please purchase some decent size numbers and put them on both sides of your mailbox. To all those parents out there who feel the need to disregard traffic laws to cut traffic off just to get to school, and then those parents who stop their car
I live in a neighborhood with sidewalks. I always make sure I clear the snow from the sidewalk after a storm. Most people don't even bother to do it. Please clear your sidewalk. Your neighbors would appreciate it.

Newly Published Local Poet - An Inspiration By Joyce Shutts Evelyn Marie Shoots of Henrietta is a true inspiration. Through her 90+ years, she has been a wordsmith & poet. Her dream has been to publish a book of her poetry. That dream came true in late November 2017 thanks to the Historian at West Henrietta Baptist Church. Bonita Healy compiled & published the book entitled “Grove of Grace.” The back cover quote follows. “During her more than 90 years of life, Evelyn Shoots has been bubbling with poetry that springs from her deep love of God, His creation, and the people who are blessed to be in her life. Here you will find peace, joy, and inspiration in the grove of grace she faithfully inhabits and shares.” The book contains an autobiography of this special lady’s life. It is available on Amazon.com, as well as from the author. Her poems have been published in “The LINK,” West Henrietta Baptist’s newsletter, and starting last year in the “Lake Country Echo.” She has had book signings at West Henrietta Baptist & the Henrietta Senior Center.

Your How to stay flexible as you age Men and women may begin to feel less flexible as they get older. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, that loss of flexibility is because muscles lose both strength and elasticity as the body ages. A lack of flexibility can make men and women more vulnerable to certain types of injuries, including muscle strains and tears. While people might not be able to maintain the flexibility they enjoyed in their twenties, there are ways for them to combat age-related loss of flexibility. • Stretch frequently. Stretching is a great way to combat age-related loss of flexibility. Stretch major muscle groups, such as hamstrings and shoulder muscles, several times per week. When practicing static stretching, the goal is to gradually elongate the muscle being stretched before holding the elongated position, and ultimately allowing the muscle to return to resting position. As flexibility improves, elongated stretches can be held for 30 seconds. Avoid stretching muscles that are sore or injured, and discontinue a stretch if you feel pain or discomfort. • Include yoga in your exercise regimen. Practitioners of yoga typically love how this unique discipline that exercises the body while relaxing the mind improves their flexibility. Many yoga poses are designed to improve the strength and flexibility of muscles, and some physicians may even recommend yoga to aging patients. Yoga DVDs or streaming sessions can be great, but beginners may want to visit yoga studios or sign up for classes at their gyms so instructors can personally ensure they are doing each pose correctly. As their flexibility improves, men and women can try more difficult poses and classes if they so desire. • Get in the pool. Swimming is another activity that can help aging men and women improve their flexibility. Strength-training exercises are an important component of a well-balanced exercise regimen, but such workouts tend to focus on one or two muscle groups at a time. That means other muscle groups may be inactive and tighten up as a result. Swimming works the entire body, which helps all muscle groups stay loose and flexible. One or two swimming sessions per week can contribute to great gains in overall flexibility, especially for men and women who remember to stretch when they get out of the pool. Flexibility may decrease as men and women age, but there are various ways to combat the natural loss of flexibility.
HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”

Perhaps in part to its widespread use in St. Patrick’s Day decorations and imagery, the shamrock is widely considered the official symbol of Ireland. But while St. Patrick is believed to have used the shamrock to teach the Christian notion of the Holy Trinity, the clover was never an official symbol of Ireland. That designation is held by the harp, which has been featured on the coat of arms of Ireland for centuries. The harp also was adopted as the emblem of the Irish Free State when it separated from the United Kingdom in 1922.
