“Son of a Tuner” Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing).
Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts Serves 4 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 cup orange juice 4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed (see below) Salt Avocado Mango Salsa (optional) Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer. Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep. Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.
Avocado Mango Salsa Makes 12/3 cups 1 mango, finely diced 1 avocado, peeled, halved, pitted, and finely diced 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 1 red chile, seeded and finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves Salt Tabasco® Combine mango, avocado, onion, chile, lime juice, vinegar, oil, and mint. Add salt and Tabasco® to taste. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

I need a home Flip is an 8 year old male Airdale Terrier mix who weighs 36 pounds and could stand to weigh a little bit more. This guy is shy at first but he warms up to people if they are patient and let him set the pace. He’s an independent fellow with not much interest in other dogs thus far. Meeting any dogs you already have will be very important because we want everyone to get along. He may be best as an only dog. Bring everyone who lives in your home, dogs included, to meet Flip and the adoption counselors can advise you as to how to help him make a smooth transition to his new home. It is recommended that he go to a home where any children are older and can respect his slow-to-warm-up approach to humans. Flip is available free of charge to approved adopters, age 60 and over, through Lollypop Farm’s Seniors-for-Seniors program. 4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Your How seniors can preserve their brains Physical activity and proper diet and nutrition can help people age 50 and older maintain their physical health. But there are also ways aging men and women can preserve brain health in an effort to prevent or delay the cognitive decline that affects millions of seniors across the globe. It’s easy to overlook the importance of keeping the brain healthy. However, a decline in brain function can result in poor concentration, memory loss and a host of other issues. Sometimes, by the time symptoms present themselves, it may be too late to reverse any damage. Research suggests that a combination of nutrition and mental, social and physical activities may have a greater impact with regard to maintaining and improving brain health than any single activity. Harvard Medical School also states that volunteering, caring for others and pursuing hobbies may benefit the brains of older adults.
Doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles can keep the brain sharp.
ability. Enrolling in an education course at a local college, community center or online also may be beneficial. • Hit the gym. Several studies suggest an association between physical activity and reduced risk of cognitive decline. This could be because exercise elevates heart rate, which pumps more blood to the brain and body.
A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found participants who reported higher levels of purpose in life exhibited superior cognitive function despite the accumulation of abnormal protein depositions (amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles) in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Having a purpose also may help those who do not have Alzheimer’s disease.
• Supplement with DHA. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is dominant in the brain. Adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which is generally high in natural sources of omega-3, including fish and mono-unsaturated fats from olives, olive oil, nuts and seeds. Supplements also may help, but individuals should consult with their doctors about which products to take.
In addition to the suggestions mentioned above, those who want to boost brain health can consider these strategies.
• Challenge the mind. Men and women can engage in challenging activities that stray from their routines. Puzzles, strategic games, jigsaw puzzles, or difficult hobbies can benefit the brain.
• Start exercising the brain early on. A study published in 2012 in the British Medical Journal examined cognitive function in people ages 45 to 70. Researchers found evidence of cognitive decline in the 45year-old participants as well as the older participants. It’s never too early to put a brain health plan into motion. • Read more books. Reading can open individuals up to new vocabulary and scenarios that promote a stronger brain and recall

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.
• Keep a close-knit group of friends. Regular conversation and social interaction is a key component of any brain health wellness plan. Slowing cognitive decline and promoting greater brain health should be a priority for adults of all ages.

BRIDAL GOWN CLEARANCE SALE TO BENEFIT ROCHESTER COMMUNITY Former Bridal Boutique Property Manager Donates Seized Gowns By Rene Spallina What does a man do with more than 500 wedding gowns? The Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester (FGGR) will be hosting a huge bridal gown clearance sale at the former Alfred Angelo Bridal store at 2544 Ridgeway Avenue in Rochester, NY from 10:00am-5:00pm on Saturday, January 27th and Sunday, January 28th. More than 500 designer bridal gowns – some with a retail price over $1,000 – will be discounted up to 75% during the sale. The sale also includes Mother of the Bride, Bridesmaid, and Flower Girl dresses and wedding accessories. The donated dresses were the result of a bankruptcy settlement between Alfred Angelo Bridal and Alloco Real Estate Management, the management company that owns Erie Canal Commons shopping plaza where the former bridal store was located when Alfred Angelo abruptly closed all of its stores in July of last year. “I would much rather help the community than try to find a buyer for the inventory,” said Joe Alloco, president of Alloco Real Estate Management. “I heard about Fairy Godmothers and thought they were a great fit for these dresses.” All dresses will be 60 percent off retail price on Saturday and 75 percent off retail on Sunday. 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale will go to FGGR. About Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester: Rene Spallina and Cynthia Jackson were two moms with a vision - The Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester - which was realized in January of 2004. provided prom dresses for financially challenged high school girls, they set out to create their own program in the Rochester community. Since then the Fairy Godmothers of Greater Rochester have dressed an average of 500 young ladies a year for a total of over 5,000 young ladies. The charity has continued to grow, now reaching over 200 high schools and special programs in the Upstate New York region and beyond. Their mission is quite simple and that is to make sure that every young lady in the community has the opportunity to experience their high school prom feeling like a princess and that they are the most important in the world if only for that moment. Selfesteem and inner strength is what we advocate for each and every young lady by providing them with a personal shopper and a “Cinderella” like experience at our annual Prom Dress Fair. --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 65-year-old male who has developed a lack of sensation in the lateral front half of my right thigh. The numbness involves strictly the skin. There is no loss of strength, function or balance in my leg. My gait is normal, although I find that if I go on a long walk, the skin will begin to “tingle.” When I went to an orthopedic surgeon, he suspected that the condition could be caused by a disc problem. Although an X-ray did show some stenosis, it was not definitive. I suspect I caused the problem by years of sleeping on my right side in a curled-up position, resulting in entrapment of the nerve. The orthopedist, however, says he generally sees this condition only in obese people, which I am not. How likely is it that my condition is of spinal origin rather than an entrapped nerve? If the condition can resolve itself gradually by avoiding activities that contribute to the problem, what does “gradually” mean? Do stretching exercises help relieve the entrapment? -- J.C.B. ANSWER: What you are describing is meralgia paresthetica, the compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which can be compressed as it passes under the inguinal ligament, exactly as you described. Your orthopedist is correct that this condition is more common in the overweight or obese; however, I have seen it in both people who are losing weight and people of normal, stable weight. It is more common in conjunction with diabetes, and it has been reported after long-distance walking and cycling. Because of the area involved in your numbness, it is very likely to be meralgia paresthetica and not spinal in origin. It does usually resolve, but it does so over the course of months, typically. Stretching would seem to make sense, but as far as I know, it hasn’t been shown to work. If it isn’t getting better, an injection into the nerve usually is effective. This is commonly done by an anesthesiologist or a painmanagement specialist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please give me some information on Elhers-Danlos syndrome? My daughter and two granddaughters have it. -- E.E.H. ANSWER: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is actually a group of uncommon genetic disorders, with very stretchy skin, flexible joints and tissue fragility as common features. There are six different kinds of Ehlers-Danlos, and each is different in regard to what tissues and organs it most affects. Most are caused by mutations in genes for collagen and related structural proteins. They can be inherited or not (in which case they are new mutations). Flexible joints (often but wrongly called “double-jointed”) and excessively stretchy skin are almost universal in EDS. The excess joint movement can cause dislocations and chronic joint pain resembling fibromyalgia. Other commonly associated conditions include prolapse of the mitral valve, hernias and, in the vascular type of EDS, aneurisms. The prognosis in EDS depends to a great extent on the subtype. I would suggest that you go with your daughter and granddaughters to their doctor (if they agree) to learn more about their particular type. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if everyone aged 50 years and older had regular colorectal cancer screenings, at least 60 percent of the deaths from the disease could be avoided. That’s a significant assertion, as colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, while in Canada it is the second leading cancer killer among men and the third leading cancer killer among women. The CDC notes that the frequency of screening depends on the type of screening a person gets. Men and women should discuss the various screening options with their physicians. Colorectal cancer can begin with the formation of polyps on the colon or rectum. These polyps may eventually turn into cancer, but screening can detect the formation of polyps and doctors can then remove them before they become cancer. Some people who develop colorectal polyps may experience symptoms such as blood in or on their stool; persistent stomach pains, aches or cramps; or unexplained weight loss.

When it’s a hit, a hiring m anager can click on a link in your resume and be taken directly to samples of your work. However, if you’re asked to submit your resume via an online application instead of sending it directly to a hiring m anager’s em ail address, then those same hyperlinks might be relegating your application to the trash bin before it’s ever seen. That’s because the database may be programmed to associate any documents with hyperlinks as spam, in which case the hiring manager will never see your application or resume.
