Donna! I am a 6-month-old old English Sheepdog. I have a 10 year old Basset Hound sister who doesn’t love to play with me, but I know she loves me. My hobbies include shoving my face in the snow, following my mom all over the house, herding the kids, and taking a lot of baths. I think I am the best pet my parent’s ever had!

REMODELING
The planet is comprised of a remarkable set of organisms that, when working correctly, produce some awe-inspiring results. However, the Earth is constantly under attack from a growing population and the mechanisms of man that can have very real environmental impacts. Education is the key to inciting real change. One in four mammals is at risk of extinction, while 78 percent of marine mammals are threatened by an early and preventable death due to getting caught in fishing nets intended for other species. Furthermore, at least 50 million acres of rainforest are lost every year, totaling an area the size of Great Britain, says the organization Solar Energy World. By making real changes, including recycling, cutting down on emissions and protecting wildlife habitats, individuals can help to preserve the world’s resources for many years to come.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

SEEING IS BELIEVING WHEN IT COMES TO ROAD SAFETY (NAPSI)—Although properly functioning vehicle lights, wipers and mirrors allow for better visibility while driving, these items are all too often forgotten or ignored when people perform basic auto care, says the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Making sure that you can see and be seen on the road is essential to avoiding motor vehicle accidents, yet many motorists overlook simple maintenance steps that can improve driving visibility,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. Following a few auto care visibility tips can be illuminating, helping to ensure the safety of you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. • Replace any exterior or interior lights that are dimming, rapidly blinking or nonfunctioning and be sure headlights are correctly aimed. • Make sure that vehicle mirrors are clean and properly positioned. • Check windshield washer fluid level and, when it gets low, replace it. • Replace wiper blades if they show cracking or if they chatter or streak when operating. Don’t forget to check the rear wiper blade. • When in doubt, turn your lights on to help you see and help other drivers see you. Some places even have laws that require headlights to be on when windshield wipers are operating. • Don’t overdrive your headlights. Maintain a speed that will let you stop within the illuminated area; otherwise, you create a blind crash zone in front of your vehicle. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

Early Tuesday evening, I pulled my car into GearHeadz Auto Repair on Rt. 15 in Avon. My car had been acting very strangely, and the battery light was on. Michael Rubert asked me to pull my car to an open bay door. My car refused to start again. I had just finished my second day of work at a new job, and my two children were still at daycare, waiting for me. Mike didn't hesitate. He offered me his van, complete with the necessary car seats, to pick up my children. Then, even though his business hours had ended before I even walked in the door, he offered to repair my vehicle that night, the next morning at the latest. He drove to an auto parts store several
The condition of the old family cemeteries in the [local town] are a disgrace to the early settlers and their families who made the town what it is today. The pioneer cemetery across the street from my house has been mowed but only twice this year, and the second time they mowed they didn't even trim around the headstones. Another of the
towns away just to get the necessary part for my vehicle more quickly. When an issue arose, he was still there when I called, thinking I would leave a message, at 10:30 at night! Mike's kindness and his willingness to go above and beyond have earned both my gratitude and my future business. Thank you, GearHeadz! We'd like to thank everyone who supported the 26th annual St. Agnes School Golf Classic in Memory of Michael B. Hayes. This is a great celebration of our wonderful St. Agnes School and Genesee Valley community and a fond remembrance of our dear friend and brother Michael, and
we thank the players, guests, volunteers, the local businesses and patrons and the staff at Livingston Country Club and the Oaks for making our tournament a success! In today's day and age, we know your time and money is asked for a lot, and we want everyone know we sincerely appreciate your support. Thank you! Just wanted to say I appreciate people who pick up after their doggies and throw their baggies into any outdoor trash receptacles or toss them at home. You are doing a great job helping keep your area clean.
cemeteries had a large tree fall last year. All that was done was cut up the tree and leave it where it lays to this day. A few years ago, a lot of time and effort was put into fixing, straightening, and cleaning the stones in these cemeteries and cleaning the cemeteries in general. The surrounding towns do an excellent job of maintaining their cemeteries, why can't our town do the same? The [local town] deserves better.
delightful cheery flowers were mowed clear cut to the ground at their peak. Why? It doesn’t make any sense! They weren’t trees that we have been told must be taken down to “secure the banks of the canal” These were delicate plants that brought much joy and delight to the walkers and bikers on the Path. Not to mention the good they do in attracting bees. NYS Canal Authorities, please leave the wildflowers alone! Keep the mowers in the shop!
My husband and I walk the Canal Path in our Village every day. Lately, we have been in awe of the beauty and rich display of wildflowers of every color, size, scent and type. Absolutely gorgeous! “Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as these.” A splendid display! Then the State came through. These
Those little rascals sure can push buttons. But the thing is that if you've got buttons then they're bound to get pushed. Why get angry? They're the children; we're the adults, aren't we? Let’s try harder to NOT let others decide the kind of people we're going to be, especially when the other people are children.
A huge thank you to those who helped me retrieve my dog who escaped from his harness while on a walk in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood on July 7. I didn’t get your names—a family in a van and a man in a white SUV—I’m so grateful for all of your help. Thank you so much!
Once again, venturing thru [local town] risks our personal safety because some people don't follow right-of-way traffic regulations - the Monument at the center of town is a TRAFFIC CIRCLE & ALL FOUR routes entering said traffic circle are governed by YIELD signs, giving vehicles already proceeding within the clearly painted lane of the traffic circle the RIGHT-OFWAY... more than one vehicle can travel within the circle at the same time as long as a vehicle entering the circle DOES NOT infringe on the forward progress of any vehicle already within the traffic circle (a.k.a.; Right-of-Way) - The YIELD signs are large, bright, and clearly posted - if you don't understand traffic regulations: ask our local LEO to explain how it works before your severely injure yourself and/or others!! Shop Local New York State Products By: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Joyce Hornick and Wendy Wasserman Amanda Dudek Don’t play ketchup.␣Mustard up the courage to relish in cleaner air this summer! Look for local New York State products to use for your summer cookouts and events. By purchasing local products, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, veggies and condiments, you’ll be decreasing air pollution by shortening the distance that these products have to travel from farm to reusable plate. To find local New York State products, check out the␣TasteNY␣and the␣New York State Grown and Certified␣programs. Also look for the TasteNY and Grown and Certified labels on products at your local store. Joyce Hornick, a Dietetic Intern, and Wendy Wasserman, a Communications Specialist, agree.␣ In their July 2nd, 2012 post for USDA Initiatives Food and Nutrition, entitled, “Top Reasons to Shop at a Farmers Market,” Hornick and Wasserman share reasons why shopping local, such as at farmer’s markets, is the best choice. “Access to fresh, locally grown foods, for starters. That may be one of the best reasons, but there are many more. Farmers markets have fruits and vegetables at the peak of the growing season. This means produce is at its freshest and tastes the best. The food is typically grown near where you live, not thousands of miles away or another country. Shopping at farmers markets also supports your
local farmers and keeps the money you spend on food closer to your neighborhood. Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Your Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. • Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. • Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. • Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the
stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. • Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Does an Aspirin a Day Keep Heart Risk at Bay? --DEAR DR. ROACH: A column in a popular consumer magazine states that taking a baby aspirin daily does more harm than good, and it should not be taken unless you have heart disease. I have been taking a baby aspirin daily for 10 years, and now I’m concerned. Your thoughts, please. -- G.D. ANSWER: Experts disagree on the best advice. Some points, however, are not controversial: Aspirin is beneficial for reducing future heart risks in people with established heart disease, but it increases the risk of bleeding events. Some of these are minor, but a few are potentially life-threatening. According to a recent review of published studies, in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease, a daily aspirin reduces the risk of a nonfatal heart attack by about 20 percent, without significantly changing stroke risk or risk of dying from heart disease. Risk of bleeding is increased by 50 percent. Also, newer evidence suggests that aspirin may decrease the risk of some cancers, especially colon cancer. Aspirin is more likely to have a net benefit in people with higher risk of heart disease, even if it isn’t diagnosed. The decision of taking aspirin should be made after a thorough review of all your individual risk factors, including heart disease risk and history of bleeding, and possibly colon cancer risk. When I discuss aspirin with patients, I very seldom recommend it to anyone with no known coronary disease who has had a significant side effect (such as bleeding) with aspirin in the past. As more studies are failing to show benefit, these recommendations may change. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible.
