People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home. • A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling. • A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS HELP TO COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive.

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN
PAVING & SEALING
Consider raised garden beds. When small critters, such as moles, are the main problem, then raised garden beds with wood or plastic bottoms and sides can be enough to safeguard gardens. Raised garden beds might not be accessible to small critters, though such beds likely won’t deter larger animals from getting into gardens that are not barricaded.

STEPS TO TAKE BEFORE AN APPRAISER’S VISIT Make any necessary repairs ahead of the appointment. Homeowners who have been putting off repairs should make them before the appraiser arrives. WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Animals and insects can cause damage, too. It’s not just poor weather that homeowners need to consider with regard to roof damage. Boring insects and animals may cause problems with roofs as well. A roof inspection may shed light on potential pest problems. Holes or nesting materials may indicate that an animal or animals are using the attic as a shelter from the elements.
“Quality you can count on year after year” DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. ~ Proverb
FLU-FIGHTING TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND OTHERS HEALTHY Sniffles, sore throat, fever, and aches and pains may accompany a number of illnesses, but during the wintertime such symptoms are typically indicative of influenza. Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu. Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with. Foods: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages. Flu shot and medications: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation: Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and restore: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus. People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

359-9444 49 Wildbriar Rd. • Rochester DID YOU KNOW? Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Rumors of a change in the workplace could make you a mite uneasy about going ahead with implementing your ideas. Best advice: Ignore the talk and proceed as planned. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Everyone has an opinion on how to handle a recent business suggestion. Thank them for their advice. Then go ahead and follow your own fine instincts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While home is your main focus this week, new issues in the workplace need your attention as well. Take things step by step. Pressures ease in time for weekend fun. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be less rigid when handling a relationship problem. You might believe you’re in the right, but try to open your mind to the possibilities of facts you’re currently not aware of. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Leos and Leonas run at a hectic pace throughout much of the week. But by the weekend, the Lions’ Dens become a purrrfect place for you Fine Felines to relax in. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Change is favored early in the week. This should make it easier for you to reassess your plans for handling a troubling professional relationship. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A suggestion from a colleague could give your professional project that long-needed boost. Meanwhile, someone close to you still needs your emotional support. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Before complying with a colleague’s request, check to see that the action benefits all, not just one person’s agenda. Continue firming up those travel plans. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your social life is on the upswing, and the only problem is deciding which invitations to accept. Enjoy yourself before settling down for some serious work next week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your creative aspects on high, you might want to restart your work on that novel or painting you put aside. Your efforts will bring a surge in your self-esteem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) While you’re generous with others, be sure you’re not overlooking your own needs. The Commerce Department announced the reinstatement of a citizenship question on the 2020 census that has not been used since the 1950s. This comes as a response to a request from the Justice Department who claims to need the information to help prevent racial discrimination and protect minority voting rights while opponents say that it will cause immigrants to avoid taking the census fearing that the government could use the information to target them. CREATIVE WAYS FOR SMALL TOWN RESIDENTS TO GIVE BACK Giving back to one’s community is a great way for men and women to make use of their talents and foster strong towns and cities. Volunteering opportunities abound in big cities, but small town residents may not have as many options as they look for ways to give back. Small town residents looking to give back may need to create their own opportunities if the options available to them do not suit their fancies.

Contact local schools. Teachers, afterschool caregivers and coaches can always use some helping hands. Contact local schools to determine if there is any way to help out. Prospective volunteers might be able to read to young children, serve as assistant coaches for youngsters’ sports teams or even help tend to playing fields. Small town school budgets tend to be stretched thin, so chances are local educators will welcome citizens looking to pitch in with open arms. Start a program through your place of employment. Another way for small town residents to give back to their communities is to begin a mentoring or internship program through their places of employment. Once their employers give the go-ahead, men and women can begin working with local high schools and/or colleges to develop programs that encourage youngsters to gain professional experience that can benefit them as they apply to college or graduate school or prepare to begin their own careers. Start a volunteering group. Small town residents without much access to volunteering programs can organize groups through their offices or neighborhoods. Organize groups willing to pitch in with charities such as Habitat for Humanity®. Group leaders can arrange transportation to work sites for members of the group while working as liaisons between their community groups and the organizations they choose to work with. Work with area hospitals. Similar to school districts, many hospitals would struggle to meet their missions of providing compassionate care if not for the contributions of volunteers. Contact area hospitals to learn about volunteering. Some may need volunteers to read to sick children, while others may need help keeping elderly patients company. Small town residents may not have a wealth of volunteering opportunities at their disposal. But with a little creativity, such men and women can still give back to their communities.

On Saturday, March 24th, the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The sun was shining and the snow had melted so Egg Hunters from 1 to 10 years of age went onto the grass and into 2 huge straw piles to hunt for over 2,000 eggs and the “Special Eggs." The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and caricatures! Though I do see dogs of other breeds playing in the road, and someday a driver is not going to be able to stop in time! Fence in, or leash your wandering dogs if you care about them. I need to add my opinion about re-gifting. If you do not like the gift you are re-gifting, chances are the recipient will not like it either. One Christmas my friend, a Scotch drinker, received Irish Cream as an obvious regift. Needless to say we stopped exchanging after that. We asked around and gave it to someone who took it as a favor to us. Please think twice before regifting that disliked present to someone else. There is a reason you do not like it. Chances are the re-gifted recipient won't appreciate it either.

How to save more for retirement after age 50 Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement, or their own financial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their first paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer. Saving for retirement might seem like a no-brainer, but the National Institute on Retirement Security notes that, in 2017, almost 40 million households in the United States had no retirement savings at all. In addition, the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that Americans have a retirement savings deficit of $4.3 trillion, meaning they have $4.3 trillion less in retirement savings than they should. Men and women over 50 who have retirement savings deficits may need to go beyond depositing more money in their retirement accounts in order to live comfortably and pay their bills in retirement. The following are a few simple ways to start saving more for retirement.
retirement, while others may keep working out of financial need. Others may simply love their jobs and want to keep going until their passion runs out. Regardless of the reason, working past the age of 65 allows men and women to keep earning and saving for retirement, while also delaying the first withdrawal from their retirement savings accounts.
• Redirect nonessential expenses into savings. Some retirement accounts, such as IRAs, are governed by deposit limits. But others, such as 401(k) retirement plans, have no such limits. Men and women can examine their spending habits in an effort to find areas where they can cut back on nonessential expenses, such as cable television subscriptions and dining out. Any money saved each month can then be redirected into savings and/or retirement accounts.
• Reconsider your current and future living situation. Housing costs are many people’s most considerable expense, and that won’t necessarily change in retirement. Even men and women who have paid off their mortgages may benefit by moving to a region with lower taxes or staying in the same area but downsizing to a smaller home where their taxes and utility bills will be lower. Adults who decide to move to more affordable areas or into smaller, less expensive homes can then redirect the money they are saving into interest-bearing retirement or savings accounts.
• Reconsider your retirement date. Deciding to work past the age of 65 is another way men and women over 50 can save more for retirement. Many professionals now continue working past the age of 65 for a variety of reasons. Some may suspect they’ll grow bored in
Many people begin saving for retirement the moment they cash their first professional paycheck. But even adults over the age of 50 sometimes feel a need to save more as their retirement dates draw closer, and there are many ways to do just that.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I do not understand the hysteria over the measles outbreak. In my day, every kid had the measles and other childhood diseases, and all survived with strengthened immune systems. Today, young people have no natural defenses against diseases because their immune systems have been compromised by drugs. With the exception of smallpox and polio, childhood diseases are a rite of passage. -- B.W. ANSWER: In the days before vaccines, pretty much every kid did get the measles, but unfortunately, not all of them survived. Although measles death rates were already dropping, before the vaccine was available there were still hundreds of thousands of cases every year, with hundreds of deaths and thousands of cases of severe complications, such as encephalitis, an extremely serious inflammation of the brain that can have long-term repercussions. The vaccine reduced the death rate to essentially zero and the case rate to a few cases per year, mostly from international travelers. Over the decades, the measles vaccine has prevented many thousands of children from death and disability. People, including me, are worried about the measles outbreak because there are many more people now who, because of diseases like HIV and cancer, have immune systems that leave them susceptible to measles, a highly infectious disease. Children under 1 year cannot get the vaccine and the immunity they get from their mother’s immune system wanes over time. Thus, there are many people at high risk for measles in the population now. The measles vaccine strengthens, not weakens, the immune system, and provides lifelong immunity for nearly everybody who gets two doses. There are risks of the vaccine, but serious adverse effects from it are rare. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of anyone being allergic or sensitive to newspaper print? I read the newspaper from front to back and like to know what the latest news is. I always seem to have burning eyes, itchy nose and some difficulty breathing. Is an allergy possible, and if so, how can I remedy it? -- J.L. ANSWER: It certainly is possible, and there have been some high-profile cases lately, including a Baltimore newspaper reporter. Most often, the chemical is from pine rosin, used in the printing process. An allergist can confirm this with skin testing. Avoiding the newpaper ink is the best solution, which may include simply washing your hands after reading the newspaper, or even using gloves. Worst case, many newspapers have electronic versions that can be read via handheld devices or your computer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We are regular readers of your column. At 72, I have fasting labs done every six months (metabolic and lipid panels and yearly vitamin D check). Some doctors say that having coffee in the morning before a blood draw is OK if you don’t use milk or sugar; other doctors say no coffee. What is the professional advice on this? -- D.B. ANSWER: Coffee or tea without milk or sugar does not interfere with the blood testing. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Volunteers of America Upstate New York Presents the Maud Booth Award to Penelope Pankow By Chaz Goodman Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) presented its highest honor, the Maud Booth award, to Penelope Pankow for her extraordinary commitment to the organization at the agency’s Donor and Volunteer Appreciation event that was held on Thursday, March 8th, during Volunteers of America Week, at Frontier Field. Named after Volunteers of America’s co-founder, the Maud Booth Award is reserved for individuals who have shown exemplary leadership, commitment, and service to the agency, its programs, and those served by VOA. In addition to serving on VOA’s Board of Directors for 9 years, Ms. Pankow has been an active supporter during her near decade of service. Ms. Pankow’s concern for the rising poverty rates in Rochester and a desire to help families and individuals in need drew her to volunteer with VOA. She first got involved working with VOA’s residential re-entry center for men and women leaving prison. “Giving people a hand up at a time when their lives can go dramatically in one direction or another matters greatly,” she says. Ms. Pankow has since served on the Board of Directors, including a term as Board Chair, co-chair of the CEO search committee, and chair of the Governance Committee. Ms. Pankow is a generous supporter of VOA’s programs which include: early education and summer camps for impoverished children, job readiness training for low income adults, and re-entry programming for incarcerated individuals. Each of these programs works to further the VOA mission to empower people in the community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. “I believe VOA is on the cusp of becoming much more prominently recognized in our community,” Ms. Pankow says. “As more people understand what we do, our ability to serve will grow.” A Rochester resident for 30 years, Ms. Pankow moved here from Los Angeles to work at Eastman Kodak before starting F. Oliver’s, her own culinary hospitality business. Others recognized at the event
Penelope Pankow at F. Oliver’s
include: Rochester City Police Investigator Otto Harnischfeger (Community Citizenship Award), Rochester City Firefighter Jason Ashton (Community Citizenship Award), Joanne Chada (Community Volunteer of the Year), and UniLink (Corporate Supporter of the Year). About Volunteers of America Upstate New York: Volunteers of America Upstate New York (VOA) is a local non-profit human service organization that serves more than 6,000 men, women and children annually in Rochester and throughout Upstate New York. The agency’s mission is to empower people in our community to rise out of poverty, move toward self-reliance, and reach their full potential. VOA offers a wide array of programming in four key areas: early childhood education; supportive housing for homeless and low income individuals and families; job readiness/workforce development services; and reentry programs for individuals who are or have been incarcerated. Volunteers of America Week is a celebration of the 122nd anniversary of the agency’s national founding on March 8th, 1896.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.
