COMPOSITE DECKING CAN BE A SMART CHOICE Composite decking is any type of decking material that is formulated from different recycled materials. The majority of these materials include hard plastic and wood shavings of pulp. Unlike wood, which can fade, crack and rot, composite decking, which has been available for roughly a decade, does not degrade quickly and requires very little upkeep. Available in a variety of wood colors to match outdoor decor, composite decks also can feature artificial wood grains to make them look similar to wood planks. Although composite decks are not completely impervious to the elements, with some occasional washing to impede mold growth and new technology that has improved stain-resistance, many of the pitfalls of other materials can be avoided with composite decks.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

WOOD STAINING TIPS Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Don’t waste your time and energy fretting over remarks you consider unnecessary or unkind. Best advice: Ignore them, and just keep doing your usual good job. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Getting that new perspective on a workplace situation could lead to a solution everyone will accept. Meanwhile, make time to keep up with your creative pursuits. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those changes you planned to implement in early summer might need to be reassessed. But don’t make any moves until you’ve discussed this with someone you trust. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Your aspects favor harmony, making this a good time to work out problems in relationships -- whether personal or professional, big or small. An old friend comes back. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) While you’re still riding that high-powered beam, you might begin to lose focus by week’s end. Could be that you’ll need to do a little cat-napping to restore your spent energies. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected development creates a lot of excitement. Where it takes you is your decision. Check out the possibilities, then decide if you want to go with it or not. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although your supporters help you squash an unfair claim against you, don’t let this go unchallenged. You need to learn more about the motives of those behind it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) There still are some tasks to clear up by midweek. Then you can welcome the new month on a high note. A friend brings surprising but very welcome news. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might want to change your plans before they’re set in cement. Consider advice from colleagues. But remember that, ultimately, it’s your choice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A difficult situation is working itself out. Lingering problems should be resolved by week’s end, allowing the Goat to enjoy a calmer, less stressful period. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to move so quickly that you miss possible warning signs that could upset your plans. Slow down. Your supporters will continue to stand by you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your generosity in sharing your time and wisdom with others leads to an intriguing development that could have you considering some interesting choices. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of influencing people to be and do their best. You would make an excellent teacher. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Churchville-Chili Students Share Knowledge and A Love for Wildlife By Amanda Puleo Students in Churchville-Chili High School’s Wildlife Ecology class have been hard at work, studying animals, their behavior and their habitats, and then assessing existing books on those subjects. Their aim was to design engaging books for children that would communicate everything they had learned. Meanwhile, Fairbanks Road Elementary School secondgraders have also been Students, young and old, bonded over a shared love researching animal classification for wildlife and a passion for learning. and how animals interact with their environments. They did “The younger children really look up to our in-depth research on seals, polar bears and other arctic wildlife that resulted high school students,” said FRS teacher in spectacular hall displays and digital Kaitlin Krahmer. “They respect the older kids presentations. The two studies intersected on and enjoy learning new things from them. March 16 when the upperclassmen made Our older students are fabulous teachers and a special visit to FRS to work with the their enthusiasm is catching! It is really lovely to see the relationships that are developing younger students. Older students had researched and created here as they all share what they know.” short monographs tailored to children on a wide variety of animal subjects: from wolves and vipers to dolphins and sea turtles. Each author was paired with a second-grader who was eager to learn about the animal and interact with an older role model. After the custom book was read and discussed, each second-grader had the chance to share their own class wildlife research with their new friend.

“My students have been impressed by how much the younger students know about forming hypotheses, gathering and analyzing information and organizing their results into presentations,” said HS teacher Paula Mir. “This is a great way for both age groups to benefit, academically and socially.”

I want to give a very special thank you to Elizabeth at Aaron Manor in Fairport. You have become a very dear friend to me when I needed one the most. Your non-stop care and concern for me over the last nine months since my mom passed away has been very much needed and you Elizabeth, have gone above and beyond with your cards and phone calls just to let me know you care. It means the world to me after taking care of both my parents for the last 12 years and having them both pass away, leaves me feeling very alone. Your support has been a life line to me. Most people after the wake and funeral don’t call or checkup, they just assume you’re okay. You knew I wasn’t. Thank you for being so kind. Laurie W.

My neighbor used to pay someone to snow blow her drive way. Never had a problem. Recently, I got new neighbors, and the person/persons they have contracted to snow blow their driveway, are INCONSIDERATE and LOUD as they REV up their truck to do their job, BEFORE it is even daylight. Several times I

Thank you to everyone who donated sewing machines in response to my Give & Take ad a few weeks ago. I replaced broken parts, tuned them up, and donated them to three local nonprofits, including one that works with newly arrived refugees. Many are now in new homes, being used and appreciated by new families and new sets of hands. I'm working my way through the rest of the machines, and will then be on the lookout for more. Thanks so much for your generosity! It's very much appreciated! Doug Potter Thank you to the Fairport Courtney Drive Panera Bread for responding to a letter my first grade student wrote about

have been woken up by them as they clear my neighbor's driveway. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. I know you have a job to do, but think about how you might be bothering people who are trying to sleep. I realize that my neighbor goes to work, but really, I can't believe that you haven't heard how LOUD these people are when they are clearing your driveway. The world doesn't just revolve around you! Say something to them. YOU hired them!! Be GOOD NEIGHBORS. I appreciate those who display our nation's flag. I don't appreciate those who fly it faded, frayed and tattered! 'Nuff said. them being his favorite restaurant as an opinion writing piece. They stopped by my school and brought the student a grilled cheese, lemonade and vouchers. They also gave cookies for the whole class and vouchers for myself in addition to an incredibly thoughtful letter of appreciation to me. Thanks to them for showing the power of writing! A BIG THANK YOU to the person who found my car key which I had dropped in the parking lot of Raymour & Flanigan Furniture Store in Victor on Saturday the 14th of April. My stress level turned into relief and great appreciation.

complaining she was called out for leaving her 2 y/o in the car while she "enjoyed a donut and caught up with a friend" I cannot fathom why you feel justified leaving a young childone you specifically said was fussy and crying- in the car while you went into a coffee shop. This was not a mistake as you claim. It is a selfish and inappropriate example of a parent placing her own frivolous needs above those of their child. If a donut was necessary there are businesses with drive-thru windows that are very convenient even if your child is having a tough morning. You may be embarrassed at being caught in a so-called "mistake," but do not let that deter from learning a very important lesson. Parenting isn't meant to be easy.

Congratulations to the recent winners of “Avon Lioness Gas Raffle” - Jasmine Rodriguez (Avon), Matt Hughes (Avon) and Isabelle Erwin (Dansville). Each receives a $100 gift card to Avon Quicklee’s or any Mobil Gas Station. Thank you to Quicklee’s and all who supported our Fundraiser. It takes a village and we are so appreciative of ours. Avon Lioness Club

Sometimes you have to give up your little comforts for the sake of your child. This is to the lady at the donut shop who got mad at the person who called the cops on her. First of all, how can you get mad for someone calling the cops because you left your two year old in a running car while you were inside eating a donut and having coffee with a friend?!? You're just lucky someone didn't come by and steal your car with your son inside of it! Secondly, why would you post this in the Penny Saver where everyone can read it? Bravo to person who called the cops because I would have done the same!

Your Potential long-term expenses to account for in retirement Retirement planning involves more than just investing in a 401(k) and/ or IRA. Individuals who hope to live comfortably in retirement must account for various expenses, including those associated with their health. A 2013 report from the U.S. Senate’s Commission on Long-Term Care found that each year an estimated 12 million adults in the United States require some type of long-term care. Planning for the following potential expenses can help men and women ensure they will have enough money to live well in retirement. • Housing: Many individuals would prefer to spend their golden years living in their own homes. However, adults who can no longer take care of themselves and/or their homes may need to move. Homeowners who simply want to downsize may be able to finance their transitions to retirement communities by selling their existing homes. But those who need to move into assisted living facilities may find that even selling their homes might not provide enough capital to pay for such residences. According to Genworth’s 2016 Cost of Care Survey, the annual cost of assisted living facilities greatly varies by state, with costs as high as $65,550 in Massachusetts and as low as $30,438 in Missouri. Whether they invest in long-term care insurance or develop another plan with their financial advisors, men and women must consider ways to finance potential housing costs in retirement. • Renovations: Home renovations are another potential cost in retirement. Aging men and women who can no longer comfortably navigate staircases but are otherwise healthy may need to renovate their homes to account for their limited mobility. Such renovations might include the installation of a staircase chair lift and/or a ramp connected to the entryway of a home. Some may even need to convert a first-floor den or living area into a bedroom, which may also require adding a full bathroom.

Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. If you have a couple of hours a month to help, please call us to volunteer. We’ll provide you with training and supplemental insurance. LIFESPAN 244-8400, ext. 142

• Maintenance: Homeowners who want to stay in their homes in retirement must also factor potential maintenance costs into their retirement plans. Aging men and women may no longer be capable of maintaining their properties in retirement. Consider the potential costs of landscaping, home maintenance and maid services when making a retirement plan. • Transportation: Diminishing vision and slower reaction times compel many retirees to give up driving. But retirees who still enjoy getting out and about will still need a way to get around. Moving to a retirement community with daily shuttle service to and from town centers is one way for seniors who no longer drive to get around. But men and women who do not want to move to such communities will need to find alternative means of transportation, the costs of which can add up quickly. Financial freedom in retirement is a goal for many working professionals. Attaining such freedom involves planning and saving for all potential expenses in retirement.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE Don’t interrupt a conversation to text or answer a phone call. Many people now have no reservations about interrupting an ongoing conversation to text someone else or answer an incoming phone call. Such behavior is disrespectful to the person you’re speaking with and can have an adverse effect on your relationship with that person going forward.

PENNY SAVER ONLINE POLL: The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on whether to overturn a 1992 decision that focused on sales tax collection for online purchases. A reversal could mean that all online retailers must collect sales tax. Brick-and-mortar retailers insist it will provide a level playing field with online competitors and help to provide state and local governments with the tax revenue they deserve. Opponents say that the action would create an undue burden on small retailers who would need to collect state, and possibly local, sales taxes. Do you think that online retailers should be required to collect sales tax? • Yes! This would help small businesses to be more competitive. • No! These businesses do not have storefronts and do not place the same burden on our infrastructure. • I don’t shop online so it doesn’t affect me! Poll Ends: 04/24/18 Vote at: www.gvpennysaver.com Poll Results: 04/17/18 What is your opinion of Facebook’s recent breach of trust? •␣It is a part of our new normal, there is no privacy! – 52.6% •␣I don’t use Facebook so it doesn’t affect me. – 26.3% •␣Goodbye Facebook, now I’ll have a lot of extra time! – 21.1%

How t o prot ect your car’s resale value

M otorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filters clean. Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehic le part, but they perform a very important job. For every gallon of gas a c ar burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine c lean. Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself. W ithout the air filter, those c ontaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need adequate air for the c ombustion proc ess to take plac e. W ithout the proper c ombustion levels, vehic les c annot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get few er miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also c an rob an engine of pow er. Drivers may notic e sluggish acceleration. Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerable neglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil c hange servic e c all. M any technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. How ever, drivers w ho live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently. M echanic s c an often detec t w hen an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides.

Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

Warning signs a t ire is about t o go f lat Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replac ed immediately.

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

TREATING DEPRESSION Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 2018

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

What Could Cause Voice to Change? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Over the past year, my voice has become hoarse or raspy. I find that I often have to clear my throat while speaking. I’ve had a stomach endoscopy and a colonoscopy done, the results of which were noted as “normal.” Nothing has changed in my life, such as climate, diet, clothing, furnishings, etc. I have never smoked. I suspect it may be allergies, since antihistamines seem to help somewhat. Is this the best solution? -- N.G. ANSWER: Vocal changes can be the result of many common conditions. Voice changes lasting more than two or three weeks should be evaluated by an ENT doctor, since there are serious conditions that can manifest in voice changes. In particular, anyone with a history of smoking needs a prompt and thorough evaluation for voice changes, since the nerve to the vocal cord is commonly damaged by lung cancer. Fortunately, alternate diagnoses, such as chronic laryngitis and benign vocal fold lesions (such as polyps) are more common. Reflux disease can affect the vocal cords, which may be why you had the upper endoscopy. Chronic sinusitis with postnasal drip is one cause of hoarseness that can be improved with antihistamines. However, I would not be comfortable treating this long-term with antihistamines without a more thorough evaluation than you have reported. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife works in the operating room of a local hospital. She came down with a Staph infection, and has been treated. Do only certain blood types catch a Staph infection? She is type A, and I am O positive. -- R.S. ANSWER: Staphylococcus aureus is a feared infection, and rightly so -- it is an aggressive bacteria that is capable of going through tissue due to its digestive enzymes. Recently, resistance to multiple antibiotics has made it even more dangerous. Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) is resistant to many antibiotics, even though we don’t use the antibiotic methicillin anymore. Anyone can be infected by Staph, and most of us will have a Staph infection at some point in our lives, such as a boil (furuncle) or abscess. Although I did read in a popular book that people with blood type A are more likely to get Staph infections, that seems to be myth, not science. Certainly, people of any blood type can get life-threatening Staph infections. All kinds of Staph, including MRSA, can be transmitted via the hands, which is why handwashing is so important. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently mentioned that apples are high in sugar. I am a 74-year-old man with borderline diabetes and an A1c level of 5.7 percent. I have been eating an apple a day for a long time and worry that I might be making my diabetes worse. -- L.T. ANSWER: The best data I can find on this still show that whole fruit, such as apples, do not adversely affect blood-sugar control if eaten in reasonable quantities (i.e., up to four a day). An apple a day is still good advice. Please don’t stay away from the doctor, though. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. STEPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK

NEED TO HIRE SOMEONE?

Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Bring convincing materials. Have your “proof” in writing or in substantiated documents. You’ll need to be as confident as possible and having the right information on hand can help seal the deal. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
