Thank you to the very kind women who stopped on RT 21 in Shortsville on Sunday, to help me with the man who collapsed with all his grocery bags full of food on the sidewalk. This was Sunday, April 2 at 3 PM. So many people just drove by, but you stopped to help me with him and gave him a ride home. You were driving a dark silver Dodge van. THANK- YOU for caring; you made my day, and I’m sure you made his day. I didn’t get your name but I hugged you! Thank you again for taking time out of your busy day to add some kindness to this world. You are a very caring person. Thank you! Thank you! LIVINGSTON COUNTY SHERIFFS Mike Bradley & Doug Morsch: Thank you so much for unlocking my car door on April 2 in the parking lot in Geneseo!! On March 27 my husband had minor eye surgery. Afterwards we stopped at Batavia Town and Country to get some breakfast. We paid our bill and left. All of a

sudden our sweet waitress was flagging us down in the car to return $ that had fallen on our seat in the restaurant. No one would have known if she kept it herself, but she did the right thing. There are so many good people in our world, but so inspiring to be the recipient of kindness and honesty! Digital Ink Arts, going into the 3rd year, would like to thank businesses in Batavia who have given us the chance to print your apparel! You are appreciated! Rather than leaving your used furniture on the curb please contact an agency which can match it with someone in need. In the March 31, 2017 “Give and Take” there is a request for furniture which will be donated to “working poor families”: 585-343-5452 or director@ministryofconcer n.org. Restore Habitat for Humanity in Canandaigua will take furniture (3963600). Goodwill in Geneseo will accept furniture, as will the Methodist Thrift Shop in Livonia (346-3223). Many people would welcome your furniture into their homes, but once it has sat in the rain/snow it is useless and will only end up clogging our landfills. Take a moment and find a way to recycle your furniture, someone will thank you!

To the cashier venting about customers - on the other hand, I find it really rude when you and another cashier are chit chatting when I am checking out. It’s not a social visit with your fellow worker when I’m being waited on. You barely acknowledge the paying customer because you feel like you need to socialize. I’m a paying customer. Make an effort to give me eye contact and pay attention to me instead of catching up on the latest with your coworker. Also, for heavens sake give me time to put my card in my wallet and stop shoving the bag toward me until I get situated. All too often, one second after the transaction ends my bag is shoved toward me before I get a chance to put my card away. I do not like that. I then turn around to say thank you and you’re already ringing up the next customer. While walking our Labrador retriever up at the [local] school, which we do 5 days a week, along with our daughter with her German Shepherd we ran across some

very UNFRIENDLY people. We always let our dogs run around off leash and play, when we see people we call them and put them back on the leash. However, this night just starting to get dark, our Labrador spotted 3 cocker spaniel-looking dogs, before we did. We called the dogs and they were way too excited and wanted to play and meet and kept running toward the dogs. NOT at all are our dogs aggressive, the lab attends dog daycare once a week and is very well socialized. You screamed at the dogs, vulgar language and then said you would report us??? Sorry you are perfect, may I suggest you & your dogs both get socialization skills!! I think it is an absolute shame that I cannot find an apartment to rent in the city or town, or even nearby, because nearly EVERY ad that I see openly state NO PETS. I have two older, wellbehaved dogs that have never destroyed anything and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Yet, even the ads that don’t openly state NO PETS, when I call to inquire, immediately say no pets or put such huge restrictions and weight limits on dogs that my beloved pets STILL don’t qualify. I can understand that people don’t want their rentals destroyed, but at least meet the animals before you turn them away.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diabetic Asks If Meds Caused Leg Weakness DEAR DR. ROACH: I have peripheral neuropathy symptoms in my feet. I am borderline diabetic and keep it under control by eating right. Also, my legs are weak, and I am doing exercises. I was taking the drug Reglan for a couple of months. During the time I was taking it was when I started to have these leg problems. Could this be a side effect of the Reglan? -- G.D. ANSWER: Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of longstanding diabetes, especially if it has been poorly controlled. Occasionally, it can show up seemingly early in the course of Type 2 diabetes, but this is thought to represent a delay in diagnosis in otherwise asymptomatic disease or in those who have ignored symptoms. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy usually begin with numbness, and later on pain and tingling of the feet. Weakness, when it happens, generally comes later on. Metoclopramide (Reglan) is used for nausea and vomiting, especially after chemotherapy, and is used to stimulate the stomach emptying in people with diabetic gastroparesis, which is a type of neuropathy of the nerves to the stomach and intestines. Many or most diabetics with gastroparesis also have diabetic neuropathy. However, metoclopramide should not be given for more than eight weeks due to the risk of tardive dyskinesia, a serious disease of motor control, especially in the facial muscles. Although tardive dyskinesia can cause symptoms in the limbs, weakness would be unusual, and tardive dyskinesia would be very unusual if you took the Reglan only for two months and have stopped. I think it is unlikely that either diabetic neuropathy or the Reglan are causing the muscle weakness. There are many kinds of neuropathies, and all (or nearly all) are more common in people with diabetes. I would revisit your doctor to try to find out more about why you are having leg weakness. READERS: Diabetes has become epidemic in North America. The booklet on it offers insight into its diagnosis and treatment. Order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We always hear about “superfoods” and their antioxidant power. Is there any truth to the hype? -- H.C. ANSWER: I know what you are saying; blueberries, kale and acai berries often are called “superfoods.” I don’t really know what “superfood” means. These foods are generally healthy, as part of a balanced diet, but it doesn’t mean that eating them can make you live forever -- or even erase bad food choices. To me, a healthy diet is one with lots of diversity -- many different fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and fish and limited amounts (or none) of red meat, saturated fat and processed foods. Health isn’t found by sticking to a fad diet, but by a lifetime of healthy eating, regular exercise, stress reduction, good social interactions and being fortunate enough to avoid injury and disease. Making good choices dramatically improves your odds of a healthy life. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Leaving An Estate To Charity One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

How aging women can fight fibromyalgia pain As the body ages, aches and pains might become more difficult for men and women to handle. While not all pain is indicative of a disorder or condition, aging women who experience pain may be suffering from fibromyalgia. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that fibromyalgia is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain. While anyone can get fibromyalgia, the NIAMS says that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed are women and that sufferers are most often diagnosed in middle age. Doctors may prescribe medication to help women fight pain resulting from fibromyalgia, and there are some additional ways to combat that pain as well. · Get enough sleep. The NIAMS says that getting enough sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. To ensure a better night’s sleep, women should adopt sleep schedules so they go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, including on weekends and during vacations. Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, as both substances can make it more difficult to sleep soundly. In addition, avoid reading or working while in bed, as such activities can stimulate the body, making it harder to fall asleep as a result. · Exercise regularly. Exercising while in pain may seem counterintuitive, but the NIAMS notes that numerous

studies have indicated that regular exercise is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. When beginning a new exercise regimen, take things slowly at first, gradually building up your endurance levels and amping up the intensity of your workouts as your body acclimates itself to exercise. · Change your diet. Some women suffering from fibromyalgia have reported feeling better when they began to avoid certain foods, though the NIAMS points out that there is no specific diet connected to reducing fibromyalgia-related pain. The AARP notes that foods such as red grapes and cherries and herbs and spices, such as ginger and turmeric, can help aging women combat pain. · Examine your work space. Working women who are dealing with fibromyalgia may benefit by examining their work spaces and adapting those spaces to make them more comfortable. Replace desk chairs if they do not provide adequate support and speak with an occupation therapist regarding other ways to make work stations more comfortable.

Turn off devices at least 60 to 90 minutes before bed to give the mind time to wind down.

Successfully Fend Off Workplace Fatigue Hit the road, Jack. Another w ay to effectively fight fatigue is to get w alking. A decades-old study conducted by a researcher at California State University, Long Beach, found that w alking briskly for 10 minutes p rovides people w ith more energy than eating a candy bar. Though the candy bar led to an initial energy boost , that boost died dow n w ithin an hour, w hereas the boost provided by a brisk w alk increased energy levels f or roughly tw o hours. Get up and w alk around the office or take a brisk w alk around the block or the pa rking lot of your office complex. You’ll come back to your desk refreshed and ready to resume your w orkday.
