Holley-Kendall Wrestling Coach John Grillo Retires By Amanda Dudek
O
n the Holley-Kendall Wrestling Team’s Senior Night, which took place on Tuesday, January 15, at 5:30 p.m., Coach John Grillo was recognized as the ultimate senior for his final season coaching the team. The match took place in the Holley Middle School/High School Gym, located at 16848 Lynch Road in Holley. Holley seniors were recognized first, and Grillo was recognized for his 44 years of coaching immediately afterwards. The match commenced following these ceremonies. The team competed against Lyndonville and St. Mary’s High Schools. Many members of past Holley wrestling teams were present at this event as well as all present wished Coach Grillo the best on his retirement. Many reflected on all the ways in which this man touched their lives. There are times when a person makes such an impact upon their community that they become more than a legend; they become an institution. One such man is Coach John Grillo. Grillo has more than 780 wins in his coaching career, which has spanned more than 30 years coaching for Holley Central School District and 12 years for Pavilion Central School District. In 2016, he held the record for the most wins in New York State. He was named a National Coach of the Year Finalist, and he has been Genesee Region Coach of the Year 16 times and Section V Coach of the Year six times. Grillo was a wrestling coach during his entire teaching career, and he has continued to coach after retiring from Holley in 2017. He has coached the Holley-Kendall team since their first combined season in 2016-17. His wrestlers have won 22 Genesee Region League titles and 12 Section V Championships. While coaching at Pavilion, his team earned a Sectional Title. He also coached two state champions to five titles. His impressive record is only one reason that Coach John Grillo is so loved and admired. Grillo was a physical education teacher. He coached not only wrestling but tennis, as well. A devoted father, he successfully saw all three of his sons graduate from Holley Central School. He also shared with his sons his passion for wrestling. He coached his own sons in wrestling while they were in school, and they went on to win champion ships. One of his sons, Ashley John Grillo, coached alongside his father for a time, and following in his father’s tradition of leadership and education, he became the Assistant Principal at Holley Elementary School. He is currently the Principal of Batavia Middle School. Coach John Grillo’s youngest son, Andrew, was his assistant coach until his retirement on January 5th and also teaches with Holley Central schools.
Coach John Grillo with his Grandchildren
Coach John Grillo has become almost a fixture at Holley Central School in the best possible way. He is someone who can be counted on by students and his fellow faculty alike. Grillo has been described as a soft-spoken man with a commanding presence, incredibly approachable and easy to talk to. For students who lacked a focus, Coach John Grillo helped them make wrestling the focus they needed to be successful. Not only did he develop winners on the wrestling mat, he also helped students develop personal growth and excellent self-discipline which they were then able to apply to other areas of their lives. Wrestling is quite a demanding sport. It is very weight conscious since weight determines what you can do and with whom you can compete. A school may have enough members and variety for a varsity team but not junior varsity team or visa versa. When a school risks losing a program, someone has to find other ways to make it happen. Grillo always found ways to keep the wrestling program running. He truly believes in its value to students. According to his son, Ashley John Grillo, his father’s legacy really comes down to his passion for his students and his athletes, including his students from when he was a teacher, as well. This also extended to any student that walked through the doors of his gymnasium, not just wrestlers and athletes. Ashley John Grillo added, “Others looked up to him as a coach figure even if he didn’t coach their sports. He preached life lessons like get good grades and be good to your mother. Most of what he taught was the sport and preparing for the match, but the rest was about life and doing your job as student and as a son or a daughter.” Coach John Grillo will be deeply missed at Holley and Kendall Central Schools and well-remembered by friends, coworkers and the countless students on whose lives he had such a positive impact. Could Abdominal Migraine Cause Cyclic Vomiting?
--DEAR DR. ROACH: My son started having gastrointestinal problems in high school. Approximately three years ago, they became so intense that he couldn’t work. Last May, he finally had surgery for gastric reflux. This helped with the persistent vomiting, but he is still experiencing intractable nausea. After a year of tests and trials of every anti-nausea medication known, he finally was told that he has cyclic vomiting syndrome. He also was told, basically, “We don’t know how to treat it.” He currently is on a trial of a tricyclic antidepressant, but wasn’t given much hope that it would help. Could you suggest any possible treatment? He is only 28, and I can’t imagine him living with this and not being able to work or participate in life forever after. -- M.S. ANSWER: Cyclic vomiting syndrome is best described in children, but is certainly described in adults. It is called “cyclic” because there are periods of multiple vomiting episodes (lasting from one day to a week) interspersed with periods of completely normal health. Children have 12 cycles per year on average, while adults have four. CVS has been associated with migraine headaches, and treatment for migraines is sometimes successful in treating CVS, so it’s possible CVS represents a variant of abdominal migraine. CVS is a difficult diagnosis to make, as it can be easily confused with other causes of recurrent vomiting. Both children and adults often go a long time with incorrect diagnoses, sometimes getting surgeries, like your son did. Treatment should be administered by a clinician experienced in this condition, and unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case with your son. In one series, 3 in 17 adults with CVS had a complete response to tricyclic antidepressants, but 13 had at least some response. So I would hold out more than just a little hope for some benefit. Other medications that have been tried include sumatriptan (normally used for migraine), ketorolac (a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine) and prochlorperazine (usually used for nausea, and I’m sure your son would have tried it). I would strongly suggest you contact the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association to get more information and suggestions for an expert in your area, at www.cvsaonline.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have noticed that the medical profession uses a number of standard words in different ways. For example, “negative” is usually good, and “positive” often is bad news. -- N.M.G. ANSWER: It’s true that we in medicine use words differently than they are used conversationally. “Negative” and “positive” are examples: We would like the biopsy to be negative for cancer, and if the HIV test is positive, that’s not good. Doctors also use the word “complaint” to describe the patient’s chief concern; it’s not that we think people are being annoying. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can skim milk or oat bran cause gas? -- J.R. ANSWER: Both certainly can cause gas. Skim milk contains the milk sugar lactose, to which many people are intolerant. In mild cases, it causes some gas; severe cases can cause diarrhea. Oat bran is a good fiber source, and all good sources of fiber can cause gas, especially if taken in amounts that are greater than the person is used to. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. American Red Cross Finger Lakes Chapter
Take Steps To Improve Your Retirement Confidence (NAPS)—A recent study by the Insured Retirement Institute found that only 25 percent of baby boomers believe they will have enough money in retirement and just 28 percent believe they did a good job financially preparing for their retirement years. This dismal view of their retirement prospects by so many aging Americans is concerning, but what is even more sobering is the study found that boomers are actually less satisfied with their finances than they were as recently as five years ago. In 2012, 41 percent of baby boomers believed they were doing a good job of financial preparation. This decline in retirement confidence has taken place in spite of healthy market conditions and rising interest rates for most retirees’ investments. Fortunately, the news doesn’t have to be so bad if seniors allow this news to serve as a wake-up call for them to take action. Here are five steps that experts say boomers can take to revisit their retirement plans now and fix things that have gone awry: 1. Reassess priorities. Take stock of your available resources and prioritize your needs vs. your wants, based on where your life is now and what is most important to you in the years ahead. 2. Raise cash. Consider options that may be available to you for boosting your savings, such as a part-time job or perhaps selling off some possessions you no longer need. 3. Generate interest. Re-evaluate where your money is sitting today and consider moving as much as you can out of cash and into interest-bearing accounts, which are paying depositors more than they have in several years. 4. Look for hidden assets. Inventory all your assets that might create cash flow, including those you may have overlooked in the past, such as a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is your personal property and, if you no longer need or can afford it, you may be able to sell it for an immediate cash payment. 5. Leverage your house. If you own your home, consider a reverse mortgage or a home equity line of credit as a way to free up cash that you can use to pay off health care bills or other expenses. Of these five steps, the one that could produce the most immediate cash flow may be the sale of a life insurance policy, known as a life settlement. Most consumers who qualify for a life settlement are 70 or older and own a life insurance policy with a benefit of at least $100,000. For more information or for a free evaluation of your life insurance policy, go to www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at 888-985-0773. There are several things older Americans can do to improve their chances of a secure retirement.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Seeing the silly side of some really ridiculous situations helps give the Lamb a new perspective on how to handle them. Some important contacts can be made this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Try to complete your outstanding tasks by midweek. This leaves you free to take advantage of new possibilities -- both professional and personal -- opening up by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) With both your creative side and your energy levels rising this week, you should be able to tackle that too-longneglected project again. A family member might have important news. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) An explanation you requested seems to be more confusing than enlightening. You should insist on clarifications now, rather than deal with problems that might arise later. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Your energy levels might be ebbing a bit. But that’s no excuse for taking catnaps when you could be working on those unfinished tasks. There’ll be time to curl up and relax by week’s end. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to get those ideas out of your head and into a readable format if you hope to have them turned into something doable. A good friend is ready with worthwhile advice. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Careful -- you might be stepping into dangerous territory if you decide to “exaggerate” the facts too much. Remember: The truth speaks for itself and needs no embellishment. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although your workplace successes have earned you many admirers, there are some colleagues who are not among them. Be careful how you proceed with your new project. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to go into great detail to explain why you’re currently reluctant to make changes to an already prepared plan. Be sure you have all the facts to back yourself up. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Travel plans might still be uncertain. But instead of getting upset about the delay, open yourself up to other possibilities, and begin checking out some alternative destinations. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Changing conditions might require you to alter some of your plans. While you might be agreeable to this, be prepared with explanations for those who do not want changes made. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Although you might have to deal with some detractors who aren’t too kind in their critiques, you gain points when you’re willing to stand up and defend your work. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for creating a warm and loving environment between yourself and others. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
