General Cleaning Tips… * Clean top to bottom. Obeying the laws of gravity is the key to avoiding cleaning in circles. * Clean as you go. When cooking, soak dishes immediately after use to prevent more work later. * Keep cleaners in your shower so you can clean yourself and your shower at the same time. * Stick to a schedule. Don’t stress out about missing certain items when things get busy; having a plan is the easiest way to organize tasks so you don’t feel pressure to get everything done at once.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? -- T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it’s so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother’s breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast cancer, but this isn’t proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to my ENT doctor in January complaining of muffled hearing and a loud, high-pitched noise in my left ear. He gave me a hearing test, and it showed 50 percent loss. I had an MRI and was told that I have an acoustic neuroma on my left side. This has caused me to go 50 percent deaf in my ear. The ENT doctor wants me to wait six months and see if it grows more, which I don’t want to do because I feel it should be taken out while it is small. The choices I have are to watch and wait; to have traditional surgery; or to have surgery with gamma knife or cyber knife. I would really like to just get this done and have it taken out before it causes more problems, like affecting my facial nerve, balance nerve or if it gets too close to my brain stem. I also am worried that I may go completely deaf. I am getting a second opinion next month from a neurosurgeon. What are your thoughts on all of this? -- B.D. ANSWER: An acoustic neuroma, also called a vestibular schwannoma, is a type of non-cancerous tumor on the eighth cranial nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. These tumors usually are treated, although some authorities recommend a watch-and-wait approach if they aren’t bothering the patient, if the patient is a poor candidate for surgery or if the patient is otherwise reluctant. None of these seems to apply to you, so I would recommend proceeding with the second opinion, the neurosurgeon, whom I think is likely to recommend treatment. Progressive hearing loss is a clear indication that treatment likely would be beneficial sooner rather than later. All the treatments you mentioned are reasonable. Cyber knife and gamma knife are ways of delivering radiation to the tumor. Since any of these can achieve the goal of preventing the tumor’s growth and any worsening of symptoms, the choice should be left to the expert. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Historical scrapbooks can honor older relatives There are so many different and creative ways for families to showcase their heritage and honor a grandparent or other special senior. Scrapbooks are one such way to share the life of a special person and indirectly tell the tale of your family history. Very often personal history projects are a part of elementary school curricula, so you may already have the makings of a family tree or a family diary in your home. All it takes is a little more research and some planning to design a scrapbook that can be gifted or kept for generations to enjoy. Begin by making an outline of what you would like to cover in the scrapbook. Perhaps there is a specific event in a grandparent’s life that is worth highlighting, like a military tour of duty or a brief stint in show business. Maybe you would like to present different snapshots in time during his or her life. Either way, planning out the content of the scrapbook will make it easier to gather the necessary elements. Once you’ve settled on a theme, begin your research by interviewing the eventual recipient (he or she doesn’t have to know the reason behind the inquiry). During the interview, take note of key dates and try to establish the mood of the era with supporting materials. For example, you may be able to find samples of advertisements from a correlating period in history or newspaper clippings that can be used to fluff up the content of the book. In the meantime, gather photos that can be used in the scrapbook, which may take some hunting. Prints can be scanned and copied via a desktop scanner at home, or loaded onto a CD or thumb drive and brought to a pharmacy photo kiosk. Some specialty shops can even scan slides or convert stills from film into images. Make sure to make copies of all original prints and be

careful not to lose or damage the originals. Scrapbooks can be made manually with materials purchased anywhere from craft and hobby stores to stationery shops. There are a variety of paper-cutting tools, adhesives, stickers, labels, and stencils that can be used to enhance the look of the scrapbook. There also are computer software programs or online tools through photo-sharing sites that enable you to upload images and text and design photo books entirely online. Then the finished product can be printed out in a variety of finishes. This method may actually be preferable for those who plan to save the scrapbook or anticipate it being such a big hit that others will want their own copies. Create a digital file of all of your information and copies of images. This way if you ever want to add to the scrapbook or reproduce information in the future you will have all of the information at your fingertips. The scrapbook also will serve as a good source of material down the line should future generations want to learn about their ancestors. Scrapbooking is more than just detailing baby’s first birthday or a vacation. This popular pastime can help document the life of a special senior.

Winners of the rental economy There are a few benefits to renting. Renters are much more mobile: They can move to take a better job if the opportunity arises. And, more often than not, renting is cheaper than buying. If renters are disciplined about investing those savings, they can come out with more wealth than buyers. Plus, renters don’t lose their shirts in housing busts.

Maria Battoglia Honored with Canandaigua Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship By The Canandaigua Classic Show Committee Maria Battoglia’s character, good grades and interest in pursuing a four-year college degree are the qualities that earned her a $1,000 scholarship to Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC). Battoglia is the 2016 recipient of a scholarship in memory of Denett Pimkowski, a woman who touched many lives through her chosen careers and volunteerism. It is funded by the Canandaigua Kiwanis Foundation with proceeds from the Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale. “I love school,” admits Battoglia who was in National Honor Society in high school and made the Dean’s list her first semester in college. “My long-term career plans are to become a Certified Public Accountant, a Chief Financial Officer or a Financial Adviser.” Working as an accountant for a company she loves “would be perfect.” In addition to her academic accomplishments, Maria was a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program while at Canandaigua Academy. In the Canandaigua school district, it is now called the Bigs and Littles program and designed to give youngsters a positive teen role model. Battoglia, a 2016 graduate, does not hesitate to recommend to others the benefit of being a mentor to a younger child. The 18th annual Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race

Marianne Gallagher (past-president, Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua), Maria Battoglia, Carla DeMeco and Laurel Wemett attend the 32nd Annual Constellation Brands Honors Dinner at Finger Lakes Community College. Track. In addition to the Denett Pimkowski scholarship, proceeds fund other scholarships and grants to nonprofit organizations in support of the arts, culture and learning in Ontario County. Applications and a discounted admission coupon for the antique show can be downloaded from the show website www.canandaiguaantiquesclassic.org. School districts interested in starting a mentoring program like Canandaigua’s, should contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester at 585-442-2250.

On Christmas Eve at the Aldi’s in Batavia I told the gentleman behind me with just a few groceries to go ahead of me at the checkout. I joked that I was being nice because Santa was watching. When I went to pay the cashier said “The fellow ahead of you left $20.00 toward your order.” I hope that fellow reads this so he knows I’m thankful. Could he have been Santa? BB of Byron

On Wednesday, December 28th I was at the BJ’s in Henrietta. After I packed my groceries in the trunk and put the cart away I realized that I had left my purse at the self-checkout. I ran back in, very panicked, and heard, “Ma’am are you looking for your purse??” from an employee. I was told that a man had seen it at the selfcheckout and turned it in. I had left it completely open with all of my most precious belongings – my camera, wallet, pictures of my grandchildren, my Bible, etc. I am so grateful to this man – thank you and God bless! I want to encourage parents to check into daycare centers not just before you make the decision to enroll your child(ren) but while they are attending daycare as well. If something seems not quite right, it most likely isn’t....listen to your children they may be trying to tell you something. You can research daycare centers for violations by visiting http://ocfs.ny.gov/ main/childcare. You can also find information on how to report a complaint. You may find your childcare provider is not meeting the standards required by the state. The daycare center is not required to notify parents when they receive violations. That is why it is important for parents to check up on the people who are caring for their children. What you find might make you consider looking elsewhere for childcare.

To the old man who on November 17th at a local optical center refused to get on an elevator with my mother, a friend and myself because of a “weight issue.” I have forgiven you for your small-minded remark because I looked at the source. May God forgive your hatefulness because you will be standing in his judgment long before I will! P.S. I am not fat, I am fluffy. As a retail store employee please remember a few things the next time you are in line. We’re supposed to make sure you leave the store happy & for the most part “say yes.” So…yes it’s rude when you’re on your cell as we help you. Yes, you are taking your miserable life out on the wrong person, it’s not my fault that you’re miserable. Yes, we know you switched the tags/stickers for an even lower price. Yes, we think you’re nuts asking for a discount on an item because that’s the price you think it should be; It’s a business, not a garage sale. Yes, I am embarrassed for you when you’re yelling at a cashier, calm down because you’re making a fool of yourself. Smile.

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ The job market can be competitive, as new graduates flood the field each and every year. But graduation season is not the only time of year when the competition to find work gets heated. The start of the new year tends to be one of the busiest times of year for new hires. According to the employment resource Simply Hired, the first Monday after New Year’s Day tends to be the busiest day for job search activity. Companies are returning to full production after the holidays, and as a result there is a flurry of new activity. This means applicants can use the last quarter of the year to prepare for job searches they will institute once the calendar turns. Many job seekers may benefit from revamping their résumés before beginning their search. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to receive thousands of résumés for each job opening they post, and the sheer volume of applicants can make it difficult for job seekers to get their résumés seen. In such instances, job seekers must take steps to tip the odds in their favor.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.
