(NAPSI)—Some of the best gifts around deliver great features and functionality but use less energy, which means they save money on energy bills and help protect the environment. Products that earn the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR label are just such gifts. Everything from TVs, laptops, tablets and other electronics, smart thermostats, appliances and even lighting. Products displaying it have been independently certified to save energy, save money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. A home outfitted with products that have earned the ENERGY STAR label can save 30 percent, or about $575 a year, on household energy bills. Over their lifetime, these products save about $8,750 on utility bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 77,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. The ENERGY STAR Holiday Gift Guide at www.energystar.gov/holiday features energy-saving products popular at this time of year, along with special deals from manufacturers, retailers and utilities that participate in the ENERGY STAR Program. Looking for the ENERGY STAR label on products specially priced for the holidays means you save on the initial price, plus keep saving through the holidays and beyond.

GIVE BACK BEAUTIFULLY (NAPSI)—You can do lovely things this holiday season. When you get and give special beauty products, you also help support Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Continuing its holiday philanthropic tradition for the tenth year in a row, Kiehl’s Since 1851, purveyor of the finest skin care products, pledges 100 percent of its net profits from the Kiehl’s x Andrew Bannecker for Feeding America collection, up to $100,000, to Feeding America. This will help provide 1,000,000 meals to families through 200 member food banks supporting 60,000 food assistance programs, shelters and meal sites. To that end, those you care for can enjoy these three gift sets: • The Limited Edition Collection for a Cause features Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Facial Cleanser, Calendula Herbal-Extract AlcoholFree Toner, Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque and Ultra Facial Cream. Each sale provides 408 meals. $50. • Limited Edition Smooth Skin Delights, includes one each of Ultimate Strength Hand Salve, Limited Edition Lavender Hand Cream, and Limited Edition Grapefruit Hand Cream, each boxed separately so you can give one gift or three. Each set means 282 meals. $35. • Limited Edition Kiss Me With Kiehl’s includes Mint, Cranberry, and Original Lip Balm #1, also individually packaged. Each set gets 205 meals to needy families. $25. PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Have the tree cut before you take it off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home. Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During the interval between being cut down and sold, trees’ vascular systems can clog and prevent the tree from getting the water it needs to survive the season. A fresh cut of the stem unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week Shortman is an 18-year-old red dun and white colored paint horse. My parents bought him for me five years ago for 4H and to help with my anxiety. Shortman has anxiety just like I do and doesn’t like new environments. He acts younger than his age but is very fun loving & curious. He likes to push around barrels & exercise balls as well as roll in the snow making snow Pegasus. Shortman is now used for mounted archery and hunter pace jumping competitions. He did not like jumping when we bought him but now, he gets eager when he sees jumps are set up. He is 15 hands tall (5 ft. at his back, like his owner) and 1,100 lbs. Shortman likes orange tic tacs, candy corn and molasses. He has been the best therapist, teacher and friend to his now 21-year-old owner. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Strange ‘Pimples’ Are Rare Disease --DEAR DR. ROACH: After having several strange-looking “pimples” on my thighs and one on my face, I was told it is lymphomatoid papulosis. One or two people in a million are diagnosed with this. I know that it is not contagious, but what is it? What causes it, how is it treated, and what can I do to avoid these? They take weeks to heal. -- R.R. ANSWER: Lymphomatoid papulosis is a rare disease. It is in the category of cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. It is a chronic disease, and lasts years or even decades. The underlying cause is not known exactly, but it is related in many ways to other lymphoproliferative diseases, such as mycosis fungoides and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The cells of the skin lesions you notice have similar genetic rearrangements as lymphoma cells. Fortunately, LyP has an excellent prognosis, although people with LyP are at increased risk for developing one of these serious conditions. The papules of LyP can appear on the extremities or the hands and face, and less commonly on other places on the body. They may start off as small red papules, get larger and then crust over. Often, several exist at different stages. Diagnosis may not be easy, as it takes an experienced dermatopathologist (pathologist with special training in skin diseases) and enough tissue to look at the genetics of the cells. Treatment is not necessary for every person with LyP. But for those who do require it, one might be ultraviolet-light treatment. More severe cases may require methotrexate, but this needs to be managed by an expert. Experts have recommended six-month visits to evaluate for early signs of enlarging lymph nodes, which might indicate the development of a lymphoproliferative disorder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion, as a noninterested party, on laser therapy. I see many ads touting its advantages and success in treating bone-on-bone knee osteoarthritis. My orthopedic doctor recommended knee replacements on both my knees. I had arthroscopic surgery on the left knee four years ago and was recommended total knee replacement on the right knee about three years ago. How long can I put off surgery, and what is the outlook if I don’t have it done? I am an 80-year-old female in good health, except for the osteoarthritis. I use naproxen when needed. If it works, I think laser therapy would be less pain and downtime. ANSWER: Low-level laser therapy has been studied in people with osteoarthritis, and some of the studies have shown reductions in pain and stiffness. The laser is thought to have an effect on circulation. However, the laser generally has been effective in people with mild to moderate disease, and bone-on-bone is severe. I think laser may help some people, but some of the benefit probably is due to placebo effect. As far as putting off your knee replacements, I have been through this many times with my own patients. Some get it done right away; others avoid surgery until they can’t take it any longer, with worsening pain, stiffness and inability to exercise. Most people have told me that they wish they had done the surgery sooner. By the way, I am interested in helping people, but have no conflicts of interest. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Congratulations to the Caledonia Fire Department for taking first place in the Scottsville Parade of Lights truck decorating contest. Great job! Just wanted to give a shout out to anyone who has outside decorations up and lit during the early mornings and afternoons. I drive a school bus for pre-k kids and it makes their day as we run around town picking up kids. I hear a lot of ahhhs and ooos. Thanks...it gives the kids something to watch for instead of "are we there yet". P.S. I would remind people to pay attention and not run the stop signs on the busses...it is a BIG ticket and points on your license.

A LASTING TRIBUTE TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS (NAPSI)—More than 30 million Americans have served in the United States Army. If you or someone you care about is among them, you can now order a personalized, commemorative brick that will be permanently placed along the pathway to the future National Museum of the United States Army. Making a Museum The National Army Museum is rapidly taking shape at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. This national landmark will be the first museum to tell the entire history of the nation’s oldest and largest military service. The massive 185,000-square-foot building will display a collection of Army artifacts, historic documents, and Soldier artwork. The vast majority of these priceless selections have never been seen by the public. “For those who served, the Museum will provide a place of reflection,” said retired Army Chief of Staff, General Gordon R. Sullivan, chairman of the Army Historical Foundation. “For the rest of America, it will be an educational institution that conveys American history through the eyes and stories of Soldiers, teaching our nation how the U.S. Army has shaped nearly every major event in our country’s history.” In the two years since groundbreaking, the building’s frame has been completed, and crews have installed the stainless-steel panels that make up its exterior. Inside, the circular walls of the 300-degree Army Theater are set, and four of the Museum’s largest artifacts are in place. How You Can Be a Part of It The U.S. Army designated the nonprofit Army Historical Foundation to lead the campaign to build the Museum. The Foundation developed the Commemorative Brick Program to raise funds for construction and offer serving Soldiers and Army veterans and their families a way to forever be part of the historic national landmark. The personalized bricks are currently being installed along the pathway leading to the Museum’s main entrance. Made of Mesabi Black granite, the impressive tributes will set the stage for the Museum experience. Individuals and organizations can still order bricks at www.armyhistory. org/bricks.

TRIVIA TEST
SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

walk through the gorgeous scenes, a brilliantly-lit winter wonderland. When visitors approach the brightly-lit arch of the entrance, they can hear Christmas music dancing on the evening air. Santas, snowmen, penguins, elves, Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, Wisemen, Rudolph and a giant snow globe sign with a Christmas Day countdown are just some of the features that immediately draw the eye. It surely touches the child inside each guest, and it is for these guests, especially the little ones, that the DiSalvos create their awe-inspiring display each year. While much has remained the same for this megawatt, Fargo Road Christmas spectacle, some of the pieces – which were quite demanding to set up – have found new homes with neighbors this year. These include the Alps, the Village, the fireplace and the gingerbread boy and girl. Also, the DiSalvos have passed the tradition of Santa’s Visit on Kids’ Night – previously the second Tuesday in December – to The Original Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford. While the cost to put on such a show of Christmas Spirit remains a mystery, the DiSalvos’ good-natured joke about rodents running on a wheel perfectly captures their selfless generosity.

There is something cheerful and comforting about lights, particularly Christmas lights, and the DiSalvos on Fargo Road in Stafford near Batavia have Christmas lights in droves. On their over 140acre property of Swallowvale, the DiSalvos have been hosting their enormous display of Christmas lights, figures and scenes for more than 20 years. These displays include classic cartoon and Christmas characters, trains and other vehicles with wheels which appear to move, a large Nativity scene and so much more. The DiSalvos’ holiday display has become such a destination for area neighbors that when they decided to take a well-earned family vacation last year and therefore were not present to construct and put on their annual Christmas lights extravaganza, there were those who were concerned, even though their upcoming absence was the subject of an article in the local paper! This year, the DiSalvo Christmas lights display has returned and is arguably as spectacular as ever. The DiSalvos have somewhat consolidated their display elements compared to the expanse of years past. The focus has shifted to the characters, and the inflatables of the past are no more. The display area has also been condensed to a more manageable stretch around the front and sides of their home. Not only does this make set up and maintenance a bit less extensive for the DiSalvos, but it also allows guests to see more while walking less. Guests are, as always, warmly invited to park along the road in front of the property and

SERVE UP WARMTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS People often associate holiday imbibing with eggnog, but many other beverages can be enjoyed this time of year. Wassail is a hot, mulled cider that was traditionally consumed while wassailing, a ritual of Medieval English Christmas and Twelfth Night celebrations. A warm beverage and caroling go hand-in-hand. Wassail can be made in many different ways, depending on one’s tastes. But cider is an integral ingredient in most wassail recipes. Home cocktail creators can use this basic recipe and modify as they see fit. Wassail Serves 8 to 10 1/2 gallon apple cider 2 cups orange juice or pineapple juice 1/4 cup lemon juice 8 whole cloves
GUIDELINES TO QUALIFY FOR PUBLICATION IN OUR HOMETOWN EVENTS:

Wassail is traditionally served out of a communal punch bowl, but can also be presented in individual mugs garnished with cinnamon sticks.

Your 3 tips to overcome everyday aches and pains Pain is a significant concern for many people. Estimates from the International Association for the Study of Pain suggest that one in five adults across the globe suffer from pain. Pain can affect anyone, even people who have not been in an accident or suffered an injury while playing a sport or performing another physical activity. For example, lower back pain, which can be caused by sitting at a desk for long stretches of time, is the most common type of chronic pain in the United States. Such pain may be unavoidable, but that does not mean it and other types of everyday aches and pains cannot be overcome. 1. Begin a well-rounded exercise regimen. Regular exercise that includes both strength training and cardiovascular exercise increases blood flow and helps build a strong core. A strong core supports the spine and reduces the pressure on it, making it less likely people who sit for long stretches at a time will end the day with lower back pain. Routine exercise also helps other areas of the body by keeping muscles loose and flexible. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women, especially those with existing aches and pains, should consult their physicians about which exercises they should do and which they might want to avoid. 2. Employ RICE. RICE, which stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation, can help men and women overcome the aches and pains that result as the body ages and tendons begin to lose some of their elasticity. RICE might be most helpful for people who have been diagnosed with tendinitis. Athletes over 40 who engage in activities that require repetitive motion might need to take more days off between rounds of golf or other competitive and/or repetitive activities. If tendinitis
flares up, take some time away, icing any sore areas, wrapping them in bandages, and elevating them while resting. Athletes rarely want to sit on the sidelines, but a few days off can go a long way toward alleviating the pain associated with tendinitis. 3. Recognize your body may develop some limitations. Age should not prevent you from being physically active, and numerous studies have touted the benefits of continuing to exercise into your golden years. However, as the body ages, muscle fibers become less dense, resulting in a loss of flexibility that increases the risk of injury and/or soreness. As men and women grow older, they shouldn’t abandon activities like gardening or strength training. But they may need to scale back on the intensity with which they perform such activities. Doing so can prevent the kinds of muscle strains associated with aging. Pain affects more than one billion people across the globe. But some simple strategies can help people overcome pain and enjoy a rich quality of life.

Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
