Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hello! We are
Hondo & Odie, Pug brothers aged 5 and 6. We love getting into trouble. When we aren’t playing with our new human, baby brother, we enjoy barking at everything that passes by the front of our house and wrestling with each other. Oh, and we LOVE eating everything that we come across! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 89 years old and just learned that I have the first stages of bed sores on my buttocks. My dermatologist said that I should stay off of it as much as possible and apply hydrocortisone cream. I have COPD, and I need to sleep sitting up. I wonder if you have any other suggestions to help my pain and discomfort. -A.A. ANSWER: Bed sores (also called pressure ulcers) are potentially serious problems that require immediate attention. We “stage” bed sores into four categories. Hopefully you have stage one, where there is skin redness, usually over a bony prominence such as the sacrum, the hand-shaped bone at the base of the spine. A stage two bed sore may be a shallow, open ulcer or a blister. At stage three there is full-thickness loss of the skin, while a stage four has exposed muscle or bone. Sometimes, it is impossible to stage ulcers from their appearance alone. A stage one bed sore often is treated with a clear film for protection. Hydrocortisone cream is surprising to me, since steroids can thin the skin when used excessively, which you certainly don’t want to do. The pain should be treated, but you should be taking this as your body’s warning that there is a problem. The key to preventing further injury is to find a way to take pressure off the area. Sleeping sitting up puts all your weight on your lower back, buttocks and thighs, which in turn puts these areas at a high risk for pressure ulcers. There are several ways to combat this, including different kinds of mattresses and pads, and even a device that adjusts automatically to pressure. Changing positions frequently (every two hours or less) is critical if you are not using a special mattress or pad. There are wound-management specialists, both nurses and doctors, with expertise for your particular situation. I would ask your doctor about finding and consulting with one. People with COPD are at high risk for poor nutrition, and making sure you are getting adequate protein and calories is critical, as poor nutrition is a big risk for serious bed sores. I strongly recommend a visit with a nutritionist. Also, perhaps your COPD treatment could be optimized to make it easier to sleep in a supine (lying-down) position. This means a revisit with your regular doctor or the consultant doctor who is treating your COPD. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing to you regarding your recent column about psoriasis. My husband spent most of his life suffering from severe psoriasis, until he was told of an all-natural solution: cilantro. In a matter of a few months he was completely symptom-free, and remains so after more than a year. He simply adds a few sprigs of cilantro to a garden salad once a day. -- J.L. ANSWER: I also have read that eating fresh cilantro helps psoriasis. I couldn’t find any study that looked at this, and people responding to online support groups reported mixed results. However, it is very safe and might be worth a try. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Some benefits of growing older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population - persons 65 years or older - numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old. · Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like self-control and altruism can contribute to happiness. · Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in
person ($20 online or via mail). · Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously - something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in short-term memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. · Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

DID YOU KNOW? Though the importing and use of asbestos has decreased dramatically since the mid-1970s, asbestos is still used in some products. According to the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration, more than a million American employees, many of whom work in the construction industry, face significant exposure to asbestos on the job. A group of minerals that occur naturally as bundles of fibers, asbestos has been linked to cancer, a connection that was ultimately discovered after evidence in the first half of the 20th century increasingly showed that breathing in asbestos caused scarring of the lungs. The most common way people are exposed to asbestos is through asbestos inhalation. Inhalation of asbestos occurs during the mining and production of asbestos and when people are involved in the making of products that contain asbestos. While such products are banned in many countries, including throughout the European Union, some countries have yet to ban the use of asbestos. Asbestos also can be inhaled when people are exposed to insulation that contains asbestos, which is generally found in older homes.

Thank you to a wonderful lady, Connie, and Livonia ambulance crew. I fell and broke my leg while walking my dog. I was sitting in the snow and trying to wave someone down for help, luckily my guardian angel, Connie, came along and called for ambulance, and my friend, to get the dog. A lot of cars had passed; one fellow even waved and tooted his horn! Anyway just wanted to say a BIG thank you to you all and let you know I am continuing to heal. I broke both bones in my leg, so it is a long process, but doing fine! Bless you all! I would like to thank the person who turned in my lost cell phone to the Sheriff’s department, that I lost it in September of last year, while moving my children to their new home. It was powered up and is still in working condition, even though it went through the winter elements. I wish that I knew who you were to
thank you in person, and where it was found. Thank you again. We want to say thanks for a job well done to Norm & Danielle of Norm’s Handyman Service. They gave us a bathroom redo which put our old bathroom to shame. They came to our home & treated us with respect. Their work was stellar. We have already recommended them to our friends. We will be contacting them again for other repairs. Sincerely, MaryLou & Tony I am a Senior Citizen and I want to thank the kind person who found my purse, which I had inadvertently left in the shopping cart on March 1st in Wegmans on Calkins Rd., in Henrietta. You turned it in to the Customer Service Dept. intact. I wish you had left your name etc. so that I could have thanked you personally. Your honestly is sincerely appreciated. J.A. What a wonderful surprise I got when I went to the window to pay for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts in Avon on Friday, March 17th. Thank you so much to the young women in front of me who paid for my beverages! What a wonderful way to start my Friday! I will pay it forward!
At a minimum, schools should let leagues know so we are prepared to pay admission in advance to watch our kids play basketball. Yes, it’s crazy as it sounds.
When a dog comes up to you unaggressive and wagging his tail, there’s no reason to dramatically accuse him of “coming after you” just because of his breed. He could easily attack you in seconds but doesn’t because he’s a sweet dog, so don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. Honestly, it’s disappointing to go to schools and have them charge admission to parents to watch their kids basketball games. All 3 of our kids are in sports and recently we were charged admission at 2 local schools. There is no advance notice on the league website or any type of communication to let parents know that there would be admission costs. The process is not consistent across all schools and for all we know the money collected may not even get transitioned to the school. There are numerous other fun and creative ways that schools can raise money.
Like everyone in this country I’m entitled to my opinion which sometimes comes with criticism. Unlike you I don’t care who you voted for, but if I had to guess you probably didn’t vote. The person I voted for won; if he would have lost my signs would have been removed the day after the election but my plan was to keep them up until after the inauguration. If the signs bothered you so much why didn’t you knock on my door and I would have explained. But you chose to do what a lot of people do, hide. There is no discussion or dialog between people anymore and is why some people believe this country is in trouble. Why is it that a developer who wants to build a supermarket and plaza near a congested intersection, blaming a supermarket 1/2 mile down the road? The town is not really for it, nor are the residents in the area. Adding a traffic light will only add more congestion from the entrances and exits. Poor choice of location, move on.

World Thinking Day 2017
By Dawn Vergari
The Lakeridge Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of Western New York celebrated World Thinking Day on February 12th. World Thinking Day, formerly Thinking Day, is celebrated annually by both Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. It is a day when they think about their “sisters” in all countries of the world. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts selects an important international issue as the theme for each year’s World Thinking Day. The theme chosen for 2017 was “Grow.” Girl Scouts and Girl Guides use the day as an opportunity to study and appreciate
other countries and cultures and equally increase awareness and sensitivity on global concerns as it relates to the theme. During World Thinking Day, the Lakeridge Girl Scouts traveled the world by visiting different booths to learn about the theme of growing throughout the countries. At these booths, the girls learned about the culture, food, and the resources of each country. They also worked on crafts such as making magic wands, bracelets and tattoos. To find out more about the programs offered by the Girl Scouts, please visit their website http://www.girlscouts.org/

Once the invitation is extended, make a reservation. Even if the client cannot make it, it’s possible to cancel the reservation. When choosing a restaurant, look for one with an established reputation, and preferably one you have patronized in the past. Avoid restaurants with loud music or ones that are considered trendy, as such locales are often louder and less conducive to conversation. Another thing to discuss when making the reservation are the seating arrangements. If the restaurant is known for its views, reserve a table with a great view and make sure the clients get the best seats at the table. Clients should not be looking at the wall or sitting in a busy location, such as outside the kitchen or near the bar or restroom.
