Kristy was a beautiful, intelligent, loving woman who had attended Brockport HS and SUNY Brockport. She went on to teach inner city children at Rochester Head Start. She was a talented writer, member of the Society of Creative Anachronism and a generous, loving woman. Her greatest accomplishment was finding her perfect soul mate in Kirk Vogel, her loving and devoted husband of over 20 years. They created 3 children: Xavier, a bright and talented student at Brockport High School and SUNY Brockport. Xavier is an accomplished musician and computer programmer. Gavin, an intelligent, deeply caring and devoted young man who she was very proud of and often said will grow to be a very exceptional husband and father. And Heather, a brilliant, beautiful young lady. If you knew Kristy, her daughter is every bit like her. Kristy, our only child, left us far too early leaving a gaping hole in the hearts of her mother, Linda Roberts of Albion, and father, David Dickinson of Kent. “H old your children tightly an d lov e them dearly for they can be gon e too quickly.” CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Fund renovations at museums, schools or arts centers. Another way to memorialize a loved one is to make a donation to his or her favorite organization. Donors’ names routinely are memorialized on walls, floors or plaques on buildings.

Home Ownership - Ken Johnson, a professor of real estate at Florida International University, said he doubts that home ownership will fall much further below current levels. Johnson thinks the market has already hit bottom and home prices should start appreciating, albeit slowly, this year. In addition, with such favorable interest rates and good deals on homes, it’s hard for potential buyers to resist taking advantage of the opportunity for too much longer.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On May 6, 1994, a rail tunnel under the English Channel officially opens, connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time since the Ice Age. The “Chunnel” runs below the seabed for 23 miles. Each day, about 30,000 people, 6,000 cars and 3,500 trucks journey through the Chunnel.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several more sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete it, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. -- R.M. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room. The booklet on back problems gives an outline of some causes of and treatments for the more-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We recently lost a dear relative to cholangiocarcinoma. He had served in the Navy in Vietnam. The probable cause of his cancer was from a parasite, a river fluke, which is common to that region. The diagnosis came way too late to save his life. How can veterans be tested or diagnosed early enough for a possible successful cure? Are there any current tests available? -- J.A.E. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your relative. Cholangiocarcinoma is cancer of the bile duct, a rare cancer. Liver flukes are a risk factor, and so is a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition associated with ulcerative colitis. The cancer is rare but highly lethal, because by the time symptoms show up, the cancer usually is advanced. Also because of its rarity, screening for the cancer in a general population won’t be effective. However, for people at high risk, such as those with PSC or a history of liver parasites, at least one study has shown that screening with a blood test (CA 19-9, CEA) or by endoscopy can be effective. It would be reasonable to speak with the expert taking care of this problem, usually a gastroenterologist, about screening. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On May 5, 1776, British Lt. Gen. Henry Clinton issues a proclamation denouncing North Carolina patriots’ “wicked rebellion” and recommends that the inhabitants return their allegiance to the king. Although he offered full pardons to all persons, it was not a success and he abandoned the area.

Arthritis linked to another condition People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients. What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage. Symptoms Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include · morning stiffness and tiredness; · tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons; · swollen fingers and toes;

· reduced range of motion; · nail changes, including pitting, and · redness and pain in the eyes. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam. Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-thecounter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis.org/psa-screening.
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On May 4, 1970, National Guardsmen open fire on a group of unarmed antiwar demonstrators at Kent State University in Ohio, killing four students and wounding nine. The nearest casualty was 20 yards away. A federal court later dropped all charges against eight Ohio National Guardsmen. You can only perceive real beauty in a person as they get older. ~ Anouk Aimee

Because Life is Better With Friends! By Linda Chadderdon
Recently my coworker and I had the privilege to sit down with 2 couples who participate in the Home Visitation Program in Genesee County. Both couples are older adults. Don and Audrey are in their early eighties and are members of our program to receive visits. Ken and Judy are retired and volunteer for the program and have been visiting Don and Audrey for two to three years now. When we arrived, the energy in the room was amazing! Through the program these four people have become fast friends. When we asked what makes this program work, their answers were quick. For Don and Audrey, Ken and Judy have provided friendship, acceptance and an additional sense of family. At their weekly visits they routinely share a snack, have insider jokes and have come to know each other well. Because they don’t have anyone close by to help, Ken and Judy check up on things they may need, have helped with yard work and also with connections to other services they have needed. Ken and Judy visit about once a week and both couples look forward to their visits. Don and Audrey know that they will always be there for them if they have a problem. Ken and Judy volunteer and share of their time and talents in several ways and we are fortunate that the Home Visitation Program is one of those places. Ken talked about the adjustment to retirement and that he enjoys still being active and contributing to helping older adults as he did in his career. He considers helping older people to be his calling in life. Both are active people involved in life in many ways and they enjoy the sense of purpose in life and the rewards that come from helping others as part of this program. There are so many people in our community who are living alone and don’t have family members in the area. Most children of seniors are working and raising
their families and aren’t as available as they’d like to be for their parents. Being socially isolated has many potentially negative effects on an individual’s physical and mental health. The Home Visitation Program helps to provide the socialization that we all need. To qualify for visits a person needs to be a resident of Genesee County, socially isolated and sixty years of age or older. Our program is non-denominational and is staffed by volunteers so there is no cost to participate. Our volunteers must be over age eighteen, and all are interviewed and trained. We check references and do a background check on everyone before they make home visits. I think the strongest statement for our program came from Don as we were preparing to leave. On Saturday, April 8th the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The late snowstorm prevented us from going outside so we adjusted and held the event in the Maher Lodge. The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and a jelly bean guessing contest. Thanks go out to the organizations and individuals that made this event possible. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you for the wonderful call I received on April Fool’s Day regarding the March 31st Give & Take column about a treadmill that you had available. We came to pick it up and you even helped load it. It was raining and we had nothing to cover it up with and you gave us a tarp. I want to thank you for help loading it and it works great! Thanks again and
God Bless You and your wife. Thank you, Woman from Cohocton
put up as shelter, junk all over the yard, bushes overgrown and it is causing rodents. The house has no power, never a light on and no one is living inside. I don’t understand why nothing is done about this. It is not fair to the neighbors who live around this house and pay taxes. Clean up your yard or vacate the premises.
April Fool’s Surprise! We thank whoever paid for our coffee and donuts including tip at the Town & Country restaurant in Batavia on April 1st. We shall pay it forward. Ann & Louie Amazing Concert! I want to congratulate all the excellent musicians at the GWMEA All-County Festival held on Saturday, April 1st. The music was performed in such an outstanding manner, everyone involved should be very proud. To the teachers who worked so diligently to get the kids ready, you did a terrific job! To the conductors for the performance, your heart and soul was felt throughout the entire group. The choice of music was really good and to see the kids so in tune and excited to perform, was fantastic! Please continue to sacrifice your time and talent to put on these celebrations of the arts in our public and catholic schools. Thank you again for all your hard work, especially St. Joseph’s and Alexander who were represented extremely well. We really enjoyed it and look forward to next year!
A local farm has recently had a second wind turbine built. Since then, our area has had 3 “brownouts.” Does anyone know if this can be the cause of our recent outages? Of course the power company denies that this can be the cause. Online research says it is possible. When our power company was questioned about damage to home appliances such as: refrigerators, freezers, water systems, etc. caused by low voltage, their answer was “Don’t you have home insurance to cover this?” Which will cost us after they increase our policies. Perhaps recourse to replace burned out appliances would be to go after those who had them installed and also hold the power company that installed them responsible for costs. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have seen a backyard that is a disaster. They are possibly even living back there. Tarps
On Saturday, February 4th at the local dollar store, I dropped my green change purse with the letter N on one side. I went back to the store after I realized it was missing and was told by the manager that she gave it to a woman who said it belonged to her. It did NOT belong to you...that was MY purse and money that you STOLE. It was my grocery money for the week! Shame on you!!! To the person who left his/her Styrofoam coffee cup sitting on a log along a trail at Mendon Ponds Park: What did you think was going to happen to it? If you are not going to respect the park or the environment, perhaps you should drink your coffee at home, in your car, or at your local coffee shop.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
