Celebrate Recovery is a Christ centered recovery program designed to give us freedom from our hurts (the emotional reaction to another person’s behavior or to a disturbing situation), hang-ups (negative mental attitudes and emotions that we use to cope, like anger and fear) and habits (addiction to something like food, drugs, gambling). These life problems can be stumbling blocks or stepping stones. Healing is available through applying the principles of a bible based recovery process to our lives. Eat healthy at 50 and beyond A balanced diet is an integral element of a healthy lifestyle for men, women and children alike. But while kids and young adults might be able to get away with an extra cheeseburger here or there, men and women approaching 50 have less leeway.

According to the National Institute on Aging, simply counting calories without regard for the foods being consumed is not enough for men and women 50 and older to maintain their longterm health. Rather, the NIA emphasizes the importance of choosing low-calorie foods that have a lot of the nutrients the body needs.

But counting calories can be an effective and simple way to maintain a healthy weight, provided those calories are coming from nutrient-rich foods. The NIA advises men and women over 50 adhere to the following daily calorie intake recommendations as they attempt to stay healthy into their golden years.

Women · Not physically active: 1,600 calories · Somewhat active: 1,800 calories · Active lifestyle: between 2,000 and 2,200 calories Men · Not physically active: 2,000 calories · Somewhat active: between 2,200 and 2,400 calories · Active lifestyle: between 2,400 and 2,800 calories When choosing foods to eat, the NIA recommends eating many different colors and types of vegetables and fruits. Phytochemicals are substances that occur naturally in plants, and there are thousands of these substances offering various benefits. The

The NIA also advises that men and women over 50 make sure at least half the grains in their diets are whole grains. Numerous studies have discovered the various benefits of whole grains, which are loaded with protein, fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients. Whole grains have been shown to reduce the risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer.

Another potential hurdle men and women over 50 may encounter is a change in their sense of smell and taste. A person’s sense of smell may fade with age, and because smell and taste are so closely related, foods enjoyed for years may no longer tantalize the taste buds. That can be problematic, as many people instinctually add more salt to foods they find bland. According to the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, older adults should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. That equates to roughly 3/4 teaspoon of salt. Older men and women should resist the temptation to use salt to add flavor to foods, instead opting for healthy foods that they can still smell and taste. In addition, men and women should mention any loss of their sense of smell to their physicians, as such a loss may indicate the presence of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease.

Maintaining a healthy diet after 50 may require some hard work and discipline. But the long-term benefits of a healthy diet make the extra effort well worth it.

Dancers Making a Difference!

By Suzanne Humel Dancers from Suzanne’s School of Dance and Tutu Tots in Batavia recently visited the Genesee County Nursing Home to perform for the residents. This is a tradition that has spanned over 30 years!

Dancers performing this year at the nursing home were: • 3-year-old Tutu Tots • 4-year-old Tutu Tots • Beginner Hip Hop class of 5-8 year olds • Modern Dance class of 9-13 year olds • Junior Company Ballet and Senior Company Ballet • Mikey Lullu, Alynn Franclemonte and Maddie Phillips each performed solos.

The seniors were very lively clapping and singing along with many of the songs. After the performance, the dancers walked around shaking the hands of the seniors and saying hi. This is always a huge hit the seniors love to thank the children personally. I always tell the children who are nervous in the medical environment of nursing homes that she is someone’s grandma or he is someone’s grandpa and they are loved.

In addition to the Genesee County Nursing Home, dancers have visited 400 Towers, Washington Towers, Victorian Manor and Batavia Nursing Home over the years.

The spirit of volunteerism is alive at Suzanne’s School of Dance and Tutu Tots!

Other volunteer experiences over the years have included singing at Christmastime at senior residences, providing free lessons for foster children in the area, performing at children’s heart fund events in Buffalo and providing scholarships to local families in need.

For over 30 years it has been a tradition to encourage and require the senior company dancers to participate in giving back to the community. Being chosen for the highest level of dance at Suzanne’s School of Dance is an accomplishment and with it comes many responsibilities such as being a great example, in and out of the studio, for the younger dancers. One year, the mother of a younger student at the studio who was receiving a scholarship shared that they had no money for Christmas. The group rallied and each brought in a gift for her as did the teachers. Santa came that Christmas!

Suzanne’s School of Dance and Tutu Tots takes pride in knowing that they take the time in their busy worlds to give back!

DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, despite regular use of sunscreen, I noticed a couple of small, dark patches on my face. I began using a product that contained 2 percent hydroquinone, which the package says is a “targeted skin lightener.” The problem is, those dark patches haven’t changed at all, except that they are a lot bigger.

My questions are: Is this product really effective? Would my skin discoloration be even worse if I hadn’t used it? Does the product perhaps make the problem worse? Finally, what is your recommendation for treating skin discolorations? -- N.C. ANSWER: Hydroquinone inhibits an enzyme necessary for making melanin, so if the darkening of the skin on your face is due to melanin (and most are), then hydroquinone ought to work. If it’s not, it’s possible that of the more than 50 conditions that can cause dark coloration of the skin listed in my textbook, you have one not due to melanin production.

It’s also possible that the 2 percent strength of hydroquinone isn’t strong enough for you. Concentrations over 2 percent (up to 4 percent) are available only by prescription. Also, sunlight can reverse the effect of hydroquinone, so you need to stay out of the sun.

I’d recommend both sun-protective clothing (e.g., a hat) AND a sunscreen of level 35 or higher. Not only will sunlight reverse the lightening effect, but your skin is more sensitive to the harmful and potentially cancer-causing effects of the sun after using hydroquinone.

Hydroquinone can be very irritating to some people. A rare complication is ochronosis, a blue-black discoloration of the skin.

The safety of hydroquinone is argued: It has been banned in Europe, although ochronosis happens primarily in Africa, where large portions of the body often are treated and the purity of the product is, at best, questionable.

It’s unlikely that hydroquinone has made the problem worse, but I can’t answer if things would be worse if you hadn’t used it. As far as my recommendation goes, think twice before lightening the skin at all, and consider other options, including covering makeup or laser surgery. If you decide to continue hydroquinone, I would first visit a dermatologist to diagnose the type of dark coloration, give you your personal options and then use prescription-grade hydroquinone, if appropriate. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had tinnitus. I read a lot and found a research study at the Mayo Clinic that tests the effectiveness of magnesium 500 mg daily for moderate to severe tinnitus.

I took a 500-mg tablet of magnesium (over the counter) and got relief fairly rapidly from the tinnitus. I stayed on the magnesium for about a year. Occasionally, it returned, and I went back on that supplement. -- Anon.

ANSWER: The results of the study you found are not yet available, but I think there has been enough published on the possible effectiveness and safety of magnesium supplementation that it is reasonable to give it a try. Magnesium deficiency is common, especially in people taking diuretics (“water pills”) for high blood pressure. The major side effect of magnesium supplementation is diarrhea, which is unlikely at a low dose. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. I received something in the mail about my truck and a recall. I have known people who had this recall happen so I decided to get it fixed. He is afraid of other dogs & mostly will hide & avoid but if an unleashed dog is barreling towards him while he is on leash he will react aggressively to protect himself. If your dogs came running up to me walking my dog you will get some choice

words from me also. It is coming from my fear that my dog will hurt yours.

There are many reasons why your dogs should never run at another dog.

The dog could be in training, he could be sick, he could be reactive, it could be his first day in his new home, & many more.

It’s not as simple as you made it. Your dogs should never be off leash if you do not have 100% recall, which you clearly do not have.

Seriously, people can get pretty greedy when it comes to asking for money for traveling for sporting events, I understand when you ask for support once, now again?
