DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had several kidney stones and was advised to avoid oxalate. I was told that green, leafy vegetables and grains are high in oxalate. How can my diet be healthy if I avoid these healthy foods? -- D.F. ANSWER: Calcium oxalate is the most common type of kidney stone, so limiting dietary oxalate makes sense. However, increasing water intake, dietary calcium and potassium can help prevent kidney stones.

It is paradoxical, but dietary calcium reduces kidney stone risk while calcium supplements increase kidney stone risk. Also, vitamin C increases kidney stone risk, so it’s not recommended to take supplemental vitamin C. There are many places to find the oxalate content of food, starting with your dietician, but websites like www.lowoxalate.info and www.ohf.org have nice lists. There you can find many fruits and vegetables that have little or no oxalate, including broccoli, lettuce and cucumber. You do need to avoid spinach, beets and similar vegetables. As far as grains go, corn, rice and wild rice are good choices. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: For a young couple wanting a baby, is there any help available for a man with a low sperm count? -- N.N. ANSWER: Identifying the cause of a couple’s infertility is often difficult. In one large study, 20 percent of cases were attributed to male factors, and 38 percent to female. In 27 percent, there were reasons for infertility in both partners, and in 15 percent of cases no cause could be found. Clearly, both partners need to be evaluated.

Low sperm count isn’t a diagnosis; many separate systems can be affected, all leading to reduced sperm count. Abnormalities in hormonal function, mechanical obstruction and testicular disease all are possibilities. Although many causes of low sperm count are untreatable, not all are. For example, elevated prolactin levels from a tumor or medication can be treated, leading to improved fertility. Low sexhormone levels can be replaced. Many men are advised to wear boxer shorts, as high temperatures affect fertility, but it’s not clear this is effective.

Assistive procedures, such as intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (a single spermatozoa injected into an egg) can be effective, but these procedures are always expensive, rarely covered by insurance, not 100 percent effective and have a small increased risk of birth defects. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is secondhand vapor (from the electronic cigarettes) harmful? -- B.S.B. ANSWER: While the evidence that secondhand smoke from regular cigarettes is harmful to people around smokers, causing increased risks of lung cancer and heart disease, the data just aren’t clear about the vapor from electronic cigarettes. It is known that the vapor contains nicotine and potentially cancer-causing chemicals, but the amounts are much lower than with regular cigarettes. These chemicals can be inhaled by nonsmokers if close enough and possibly absorbed through the skin.

Electronic cigarettes, also called vaporizers, may help people quit smoking. Young Henrietta Pianists Selected to Perform for Composers

Over the past several years, private students from my homebased piano studio have had the opportunity to perform compositions for a current composer. This requires choosing an appropriate piece on each student’s level followed by learning, polishing, perfecting and then memorizing those pieces. Past years have included well-known composers Robert Vandall, Melody Bober and Martha Mier. This year we were excited to have Dennis Alexander with us for our performance. All of the composers are nationally known artists, instructors and performers in their own right.

The event is held at Linehan Chapel on the campus of Nazareth College. Students are selected and begin the process 2 - 3 months in advance of the performance dates, generally in March or April, for the all-day event that includes approximately 200 students from several piano studios. It is an exciting day and I am honored to be a part of it. Just meeting the composer and hearing him or her perform is inspirational in & of itself. The experience challenges students to be creative in their own right. Who knows but perhaps one of those participating students will become a composer himself/herself someday!

I would be remiss not to mention that, not only do my students receive inspiration, but I do as well. I love hearing all the many students perform and garner ideas of music I’d like to add to my teaching repertoire.

All of this is made possible for me as a long-time member of the Rochester Piano Teachers Guild (RPTG), a professional

organization that promotes and encourages the love of piano through growth and development of individual students of all ages. My degree in Music Ed from Houghton College, as well as my 30-plus years of teaching, gives me the experience and background to inspire and motivate learning. As well, I work as an accompanist for my church choir and for several of the choruses in the Rush-Henrietta school system. My experience also includes conducting children’s choirs, a choir of seniors and many years of choral singing.

I’d like to present the following students who performed this year for Dennis Alexander: Valery Velez, Preston Philips, Semhal Beyene, Briea Schlindwein and Caden Farrington Congratulations to each of them for an outstanding job. I could not be more proud!

Day before the 4th of July holiday, finally have a nice swim day and we discover the heater on our inground pool isn’t staying on. Go to our local pool place, Deep Blue Pool and Spa for any suggestions on what to do. After hearing their advice and following their instructions we are not able to resolve the problem. We telephone them with our unfortunate results and within a half hour the owner is at our home, kneeling on the hard, hot, concrete and cleaning the corrosion off the pressure contacts to the heater. My daughter wanted chocolate chip ice cream tonight. So we jump in the car and drive to [local ice cream parlor]. We pull into the drive thru at 9:45pm. There are two vehicles ahead of ours and one that pulled up behind us. The young guy that runs the place was taking the order of the vehicle ahead of us. He was gesturing quite a bit. Then the guy goes inside. He emerges a few minutes later to take our order. My husband proceeds to tell him the order. Our daughter who is four wanted chocolate chip ice cream. The guy throws his hands up in the air saying we have mint chocolate chip or cookie dough that have chocolate. Then he proceeds to yell at my husband and tell him he is being disrespectful and rude by

Beware. A local cable company who has celebrities advertising for them on TV is telling you that connecting you to what matters, matters to them. Well, let me tell you, they don’t care what matters to you.

My cable/ internet went out and I called and it took 3 people to tell me they had no idea why. So, the next day a tech comes out and says my cable was shut off. I pay my bill a week early. He turned it back on and said he couldn’t explain what happened. I had 3 Grand kids at my house with no TV for 2 days or internet to do school stuff on. I was very upset. I called the Manager and he said it could be a number of

things, but couldn’t give me an answer as to why it was shut off, but he would discount my bill $4.00 for the inconvenience. Great. I will use it towards getting a new provider!!!!

The solid white lines at intersections are there to tell you where you NEED TO STOP so that people can safely cross the street or turn onto the road you are blocking when you go over the line. Going over the line will not get you to your destination any quicker and may even delay you if you cause an accident. When pulling up to an intersection, you need to be prepared to STOP BEFORE THE SOLID WHITE LINE. It is there for a very good reason.

70th Anniversary Series- Volume 2 In 1948, Roger and Jane Harrison, a young couple new to the Avon Community began publishing a weekly shopping guide. This was in response to area merchants who sought a means to collectively advertise their businesses in a cost-effective way, rather than trying to mail or deliver individual advertising pieces. In its humble beginnings, probably less than 10 pages were painstakingly produced each week with pen and ink drawings and text. Stencils of the pages were then cut and a hand-cranked mimeograph machine, usually run by Jane, printed off the pages which were then collated together and stapled in the top corner. The Penny Savers were hand delivered to the residents of the Village. The first location of the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” was in a garage on Temple Street owned by local well-known realtor Helen Jobes. Above the garage was an apartment where Roger and Jane lived and which was also the first home of their baby girl, Kim, born in 1950. Rumor has it that while Jane was running the mimeograph, Kim was usually in her little seat on the counter next to the machine. Roger’s brother Ted also worked in production, and his wife Joyce eventually helped as the business and circulation grew.

In 1954, the Penny Saver had grown enough to require more production space. Circulation was expanded to include not only Avon, but Caledonia and Geneseo as well. The Harrisons purchased a home at 68 High Street in Avon from Ira Browne, a local plumbing contractor. Behind the residence was a cinder block building that became the next office and production area for the Penny Saver. Having more space, an offset press was purchased. There was also a dedicated production area and a “composition” area where ads were designed and composed, and a darkroom for producing negatives where the images were then “burned” onto aluminum plates. These plates were mounted on the press to print the pages. After printing, the individual pages were placed in bins and several area ladies were hired to collate the pages, staple and stack the finished product for delivery. (The cinder block building was heated with oil which sometimes froze in the line during the winter. On those days everyone would work in their coats and gloves until the building warmed up.)

Without all the modern conveniences of today, such as temperature and humidity control, often on very humid days the pages wouldn’t stack well and would fly around the collating area. The press run was late into Wednesday evenings. Once the ladies finished assembling the pages, Roger then delivered the Penny Savers to the post office.

Our employee count grew from 2 on Temple Street to approximately 10 in our “new” location. In keeping with the “family” tradition, along with Ted and Joyce (who later went on to do bookkeeping, camera work and ad designing), Clare Harrison, wife of Roger’s cousin Dean was a pillar of our composition and typesetting department for many years.

In 1955, Roger and Jane welcomed a baby boy, Steve (James Stephen) to the family. Both Steve and Kim grew up with the family business – living with deadlines and the smell of negative developer and ink firmly ingrained in their memories.

We take great pride in these many years of publishing, to have never missed an issue! The dedicated employees and many relatives, friends and neighbors helped in so many ways during those early days to produce the Penny Saver each week, often coming to our rescue during snowstorms, power outages and other calamities.

Their contributions of time and talents helped us grow our business to what it has become today.

Signs of atrial fibrillation - and how to treat it Palpitations of the heart or uncomfortable sensations in the chest can be distressing. Thoughts of heart attack may come to mind, and that anxiety can only exacerbate the situation. While heart attack might be the first thing people think of when experiencing chest discomfort, atrial fibrillation may be to blame for such feelings.

Atrial fibrillation, also called AFib, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat that may lead to heart-related complications. The American Heart Association says that at least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFib. Although treatable, without proper diagnosis, AFib may lead to blood clots, stroke and even heart failure.

Many people with AFib experience no symptoms at all and are unaware they have it until it is discovered during a physical examination. For those who experience symptoms, The Mayo Clinic lists these as some of the more common: · Palpitations, which can be sensations of a flip-flopping in the chest or even a racing feeling. · Fatigue · Reduced ability to exercise · Lightheadedness · Chest pain or shortness of breath · Dizziness and weakness When the heart is working normally, it contracts and relaxes in a beat. When a person has AFib, the upper chambers of the heart, called the atria, beat irregularly. They quiver and do not move the blood into the ventricles in an effective manner. Once AFib is diagnosed, managing risk factors and restoring a heart to normal rhythm becomes the priority. Doctors use a variety of medications to control heart rate, which may include beta blockers and calcium channel blockers. Medications to prevent stroke also may be prescribed. Surgical intervention may be necessary if medications aren’t working.

Atrial fibrillation is a serious condition that requires treatment. Episodes can be managed and treated to help people live healthier lives.

Bus Operators needed!

RTS Orleans Help our Customer Enjoy the Ride!

Drives bus or other revenue service vehicle to transport customers over specified routes to local points according to a time schedule. Pick up passengers in response to radio or telephone relayed requests for service or on a pre-arranged schedule. Assists customers with boarding and debarking the vehicle. Records activities on trip log and reports malfunctions. Inspects vehicle before departure.

Requirements: Applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED; a valid NY State Commerical Driver’s License, Class C or higher, w/passenger endorsement, minimum of 5 years Class D auto driving experience and a clean driving record (no points, no suspensions, no convictions); applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test; criminal background check conducted. This position complies with NYS 19A requirements.
