HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Consider the overall office climate. Is yours a relaxed working environment, or is it ultra-formal? Allow the corporate culture to play a part in your gifting decisions. A gift that may be appropriate for a smaller, casual company may not be fitting for a large, rules-heavy corporation. Always let common sense prevail.
GET GIFTS THERE ON TIME Research shipping options. In 2018, Christmas falls on a Tuesday. Shoppers who plan to rely on two-day or overnight shipping should keep that in mind. Some delivery services may be open throughout the weekend before Christmas, while others may only be open on Saturday. Last-minute shoppers, whether they’re shopping online or in-person, should confirm their shipping options well in advance of Christmas. Because Christmas is on a Tuesday this year, getting gifts to their destination on time may require shoppers to purchase and ship them earlier than they otherwise might.

Finding work after 50 Unemployment isn’t easy for anyone, regardless of their age. But unemployed men and women over 50 may find it especially difficult to find work. Whether it’s a byproduct of age-related discrimination or any of a host of additional variables, jobless older workers often struggle to find work. In a 2016 analysis of government figures, the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis at the New School estimated that the jobless rate for workers 55 and older in August of 2016, six years after the Great Recession, was nearly 9 percent. At the time, the national jobless rate hovered around 5 percent. Unemployed men and women over 50 who are struggling to find work can consider the following strategies as they look to rejoin the workforce. • Revisit your résumé. Unemployed men and women over 50 have no doubt updated their résumés to reflect their most recent professional experience. But they may need to trim some of the fat in regard to their work life 10 or more years ago. Today’s hiring managers may only be concerned with recent experience showcase their enthusiasm about working with and learning that illustrates skillsets that are relevant to today’s jobs. LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE AFTER 50 (NAPSI)—For many people, navigating life and love as they get older can be challenging. Adjusting to change, seeking a new partner, or simply breaking out of a rut may feel overwhelming. In the hilarious hit comedy “Book Club,” four mature women in different circumstances discover that you’re never too old to enjoy life or pursue love. That’s a message author and newspaper columnist Tom Blake agrees with wholeheartedly. Blake has written more than 4,000 articles and newsletters on the topic and offers this advice, which is reflected in the movie: 1. Give love a chance in later years: Put yourself out there; everyone deserves love. 2. Don’t worry about what others think: Do what’s right for you. 3. Loosen up: Don’t be too set in your ways. 4. Change your routine: Be open to new experiences. 5. Don’t let your children make decisions for you: No one knows you better than you. 6. Have fun: Don’t stop living before you stop living! In “Book Club,” legendary actresses Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star respectively as a widow, single, divorcée and long-married woman who hilariously shake up their lives by diving into the infamous book “Fifty Shades of Grey.” From discovering new romance to rekindling old flames, the lifelong friends inspire each other to make their next chapter the best chapter. “’Book Club’ has wonderful messages about never giving up on life or love no matter how old you are,” said Blake. “Good things can happen when you venture out and meet new people.” To liven up your life, check out “Book Club” on DVD, Blu-ray or iTunes and go to www.FindingLoveAfter50.com for more tips from Blake.

Penfield Symphony Orchestra Presents “Favorites for the Holidays” Concert Submitted By: Dianne Stengel The Penfield Symphony Orchestra, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the Rochester community for over 60 years, will present “Favorites For The Holidays,” the second concert of its 63rd season. Sponsored by Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, the concert will feature Higdon’s Blue Cathedral and arguably the most famous work of Beethoven, his Symphony No. 5 in C minor. Additionally, there will be lots of holiday favorites and the premier of a new brass piece. The concert will be held on December 3, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at the Penfield High School Auditorium located at 25 High School Drive in Penfield, New York. Tickets can be purchased online at www.penfieldsymphony.org, by phone at 585872-0774, at all area Wegmans, the Penfield Recreation Department, Canandaigua National Bank (Penfield Branch), and at the door on the night of the concert. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $12 for senior citizens, 60 and over. For students of any age with a student ID, tickets are free. “Blue Cathedral” is an orchestral work by the American composer Jennifer Higdon. This touching, evocative music was dedicated to the memory of Higdon’s brother and is one of her most performed works. Beethoven’s 5th Symphony needs no introduction and has been described as one of the most important works of its period - a “symphony of destiny.” Directed by Dr. David Harman since 2000, this 90-piece orchestra enriches the community by providing fine music and a setting where both amateur and professional musicians perform a variety of classical music. Over its history, the PSO has commissioned many new works and concerts and featured guest artists of local and national renown. The PSO Board of Directors and musicians are dedicated volunteers who are passionate about promoting arts and music and who, quite simply, like to make and perform great music together.

Could Your Pet’s Diet be a Problem? Meeting your pet’s nutritional needs is one of the most important ways you care for your furry friend. It may surprise you, then, to learn that around 70% of pets are eating the wrong pet food every day, and a staggering 60% of pets are overweight. Weight and other health concerns could all be related to your pet’s diet. Many pet owners do their best to buy the right pet food for their four-legged companions, but many are unaware of the poor-quality ingredients too often found in these products.

Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Zoe and I’m a Miniature Schnauzer.␣ I’m 5 years old and live with my parents & my 4 yr. old brother.␣ I’m very friendly and love people.␣ My favorite thing to do is ride on my Grandpa’s golf cart, I’m pretty lucky.
Low-Quality Ingredient Watch List Chicken: This is problematic when a single, meat ingredient is 80 percent water, losing most of its weight during processing and likely falling to the third or fourth ingredient. Corn, Wheat, Soy: Cheap fillers, these can lead to obesity, diabetes, allergies and poor digestion. Animal Digest: This could be from any animal source, some of which are too disgusting to mention. Meat By-product Meal: This could be anything. Parts are parts. Beef Tallow: This is generally low in linoleic acid, essential for your pet’s skin and coat.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

What type of food is nutritionally better for my pet? A raw diet is ideal for pets such as dogs and cats. Of the three broad types of pet food: kibble, canned food and raw diet, raw diet is how dogs and cats naturally eat, with digestive systems designed for raw meat consumption. Yet, too often, we feed them foods that are heavily processed, cooking out most nutrients. Unlike these processed foods, a raw diet contains essential, natural bacteria and enzymes and is comprised of a very highly digestible protein and a very low amount of carbohydrates which often cause major obesity problems in pets. Raw diet foods are now available in convenient fresh, frozen and dehydrated varieties. This higher-quality pet food, which may sometimes be costlier, is an expense that typically balances out as pets usually require less food to meet their nutritional needs and is likely to result in savings on vet visits and health costs. A raw diet also often improves appetite and digestion, results in allergy relief, helps provide a vibrant skin and coat, stimulates healthy teeth and gums, provides greater stamina and vitality, and encourages a healthy immune system.
How can I create a better diet for my pet? Entering our 25th year, Pet Saver emphasizes feeding your pets the most nutritious foods available. We carry several, excellent brands of natural and alternative pet food, such as Orijin, Acana, Country Naturals, Zignature, NutriSource, Earthborn, Primal, Stella and Chewy’s among many others. We have solutions for many pet nutrition concerns, and a brief discussion with us can help you find a better pet food. Our educated associates can help you create a nutritional diet to meet your pet’s unique needs based on age, breed, health concerns and activity level. Visit us today at one of our four locations: Webster, Brighton, Greece and our newest addition complete with a pet treat bakery, Victor, Mon-Sat: 9am-9pm, Sun: 10am-6pm.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Arian penchant for impatience shows, as you consider passing a problemprone project on to someone else. Best advice: Stay with it and work out those snarls yourself. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Even patient Bovines can be frustrated when carefully made plans go awry. But crank up that “stick-to-it-ivity” you do so well, and you’ll soon find that your schedule is back in sync. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your aspect favors using more resourceful means in dealing with a workplace situation. Some discreet checking around could help shed light on the root cause of the problem. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You show an unusually strong streak of stubbornness in rejecting suggestions from friends and/or family members early in the week. But you become more receptive by the week’s end. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat might find a gentler approach more effective when dealing with those who resist needed changes. Remember, the word “persuasion” starts with the sound “purr.” VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A disappointing experience with someone you felt you could trust can be painful. But there just might be more to this situation than you’re aware of. Press for an explanation. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Changing your views about something you believe in isn’t easy. But you might reconsider as the facts come in. Keep your mind open, even if you’re uneasy about what you might learn. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might have to do some serious shifting of gears to get your project back on track. But cheer up. Your hard work starts to produce some positive results by the week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unsettling mood at the start of the week soon lifts and gives way to a more positive attitude as you find fun and friendship beginning to dominate your aspect. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A delay in firming up holiday plans could work to your advantage. Use this time to scout out possibilities that might be more in line with what those close to you would prefer. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Some people might question some of the new friends you’ve welcomed into your life. But your ability to see beyond the obvious helps you recognize how special they are. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Financial matters can be especially tricky this week. It’s best to follow a conservative investment path for now, and wait for a more fortuitous time to take a bolder approach. BORN THIS WEEK: Your warmth, your humor and your genuine concern for others make you someone people love to keep close to their lives. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Platelet Donations Are Perfectly Safe --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am writing about platelet donations. As a way of giving back, I donate platelets. I was wondering if there is a time that a person should stop donating, based on age or difficulty. I am 61 years old, and the past three times I’ve donated, I felt uncomfortable in some way. Either my arm or wrist hurt, or I had a feeling of malaise during the donating process. One time, I was told that my platelet count was on the low side, but it was not any danger to my well-being. I feel well immediately afterward and do not have health issues, so my concern is whether this is somehow detrimental to my own health as I age. -- S.B. ANSWER: Platelet donation generally is a very well-tolerated procedure. The platelets are removed from the donor’s blood via a process called apheresis; a centrifuge separates the blood into four components: plasma (containing proteins), platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. For platelet donors, just the platelets are removed, and the rest of the blood components are returned to the donor. In order to keep the blood from clotting inside the machine, sodium citrate is added to the apheresis machine. This reduces the calcium, which is needed for blood clotting. However, some people can develop symptoms of low calcium during the apheresis. This can be treated by slowing the rate of donation, or by taking some oral calcium before donating. More-severe cases might require giving intravenous calcium to the patient via another IV catheter. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people make no more than 24 donations per year, but there is good evidence that platelet donation is safe. I congratulate you on being a communityminded citizen, and I can reassure you that you have very little short-term risk and essentially zero long-term risk from donating platelets, whatever your age. Donate as often as is comfortable, and try taking a calcium supplement before donating. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have taken 5 mg zolpidem (Ambien) nightly for about three years. My doctor seems to think this is acceptable. I sleep five to six hours with this aid and function normally in the morning. Recently I was told that this drug has a cumulative effect on the body. Would you verify this? Over-thecounter sleep aids have no effect, and this drug seems to be the only way I can sleep. -- D.M. ANSWER: Zolpidem and its cousins, eszopiclone (Lunesta) and zaleplon (Sonata), work for a relatively short time in the body before they are metabolized, so they do not build up in the body. They are mostly gone in the morning, and grogginess is not a problem for most people. However, people often develop a dependence on these medications; it becomes difficult to sleep without them. More importantly, they do increase the risk of falls and auto accidents, especially when used every day and in people over 65. I don’t recommend them for the long term, and I have referred my patients who can’t sleep without them to a sleep specialist, who sometimes (but not always) is able to find a better solution than daily Ambien. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. The Scottsville Fire Department brought out a fire truck and handed out treats for Halloween in Scottsville. I can't thank the Department enough for their generosity and the time spent volunteering within our community. They made the smiles of children in Scottsville even bigger! Perhaps the child was ill, which is why (s)he was crying, and they were waiting that long in the store for a prescription? No, I am not this child's mother, but I have been in that position before! Also, you complain that she should teach her child how to behave, but did you ever stop to think that was exactly what she was doing? Yes, it's very inconvenient & irritating to hear a toddler scream. But by not giving in to

I went through the [car wash]. Halfway through, I heard an odd noise and I assumed it was water or brushes. I arrived home and saw an 8-inch scratch on my driver’s door. In regard to the post citing New York State, 'Right to Farm' and the smells of agriculture; your right to farm stops when the rights of others are stomped on. These rights stop when you deposit this waste on the public roads, it stops when you obliterate the public roads with mud and stones tracked from your fields, it stops when your Round-up or similar leaves your property and kills vegetation belonging to others. Your right to farm stops when overloaded or over height equipment damages roads or pulls down wires, your right stops when this highly concentrated, high volume bio hazardous waste you call manure leaves your property thru run-off, wind or underground migration. When you shop small, the bulk of the money you spend and most of your taxes stay local — helping schools, paving streets, keeping you safe. According to the research firm Civic Economics, for every $100 you spend: in a local small business, $68 stays in your community; at a local branch of a chain store, $43 remains; online, virtually no money stays local.
