HOW TO SUCCEED WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION While it’s difficult to gauge just how many people make New Year’s resolutions each year, various factors suggest millions of people resolve to improve their lives each January. Television segments devoted to healthy resolutions and discounted memberships are just two of many indicators suggesting resolutions are popular and potentially big business.

As popular as making resolutions may be, reports indicate that they’re more popular to make than commit to. For example, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail.

So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help.

• Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal.

• Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal.

• Don’t be shy. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you’re also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer incite and/or advice, which can prove invaluable.

• Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

Successful New Year’s resolutions might be hard to come by. But there are ways to stay the course and see resolutions through to realization.

Does Too Much Water Wear Out Kidneys?

DEAR DR. ROACH: We are always being told to drink water -the consequence of which, of course, is increased urination. But what about the kidneys? Since they have to perform repeatedly, are they being worn out prematurely?

I am a 62-year-old female. On my past physical, I was told that my bladder had dropped a bit. Does this have anything to do with excessive urination caused by drinking too much water? -- R.R. ANSWER: The kidney is capable of performing its two primary functions -- removing waste products and maintaining salt and water balance -- under a wide variety of conditions. In fact, a healthy set of kidneys can get rid of 40 liters of water daily. Even so, a high water load does cause the kidney to work hard, especially under the now-rare condition of minimal salt intake.

Unfortunately, damaged kidneys sometimes cannot handle a high water load.

I often get frustrated with the recommendation to drink a certain quantity of water, most commonly 8 cups a day. That amount is too much for some people, and not enough for others. Listening to your body and drinking when you are thirsty is, in general, a much better approach. There are some instances where drinking more water than you feel you need makes sense: in people with a history of kidney stones, for example. Some older people have inadequate thirst mechanisms, so an extra glass or two of water might be a good idea for them, and won’t cause problems in most people.

Your second question, about a “dropped” bladder, has nothing to do with the kidneys. Descent of the bladder -- a type of pelvic organ prolapse -- is caused by changes in the pelvic floor, especially in older women who’ve had multiple childbirths. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent newspaper article suggested that mental and brain health might be improved by taking a small dose of lithium (5 mg) daily. What are your thoughts? -- R.B.L. ANSWER: Lithium is a light element found in trace amounts in the ground and in drinking water. It is used as a treatment in mental illnesses, especially bipolar disorder and occasionally in resistant cases of depression. Lithium requires skill in prescribing and monitoring, but it probably is underused, according to my colleagues in psychiatry. Lithium has a probably unwarranted bad reputation.

I found the article you mentioned, by Dr. Anna Fels, and recalled studies that showed suicide, homicide and rape rates were higher in communities with low lithium levels, and I find this intriguing.

People in higher-lithium areas also seemed to have lower dementia levels. However, much more research needs to be done before I could recommend lithium as a supplement for brain health.

BY THE WAY: The usual dose for lithium in people with psychiatric conditions is around 1,000 to 1,800 milligrams daily.

The content in drinking water in some areas is as high as 0.17 milligrams per liter. Drinking about 6 liters a day would get you only a thousandth of the usual daily dose. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Thanks to education and awareness about skin cancer, more people are taking heed of skin growths and changes and visiting their dermatologists. A spot or mole on the body can be a cause for concern. A seborrheic keratosis is one such type of skin growth that is actually benign but may cause concern due to its appearance.

Seborrheic keratoses, or SKs, are one of the most common noncancerous skin growths, says The Mayo Clinic. Although anyone can get them, they are more common in middle-aged to older adults. Also known as basal cell papilloma, senile warts or barnacles, these growths form as a common sign of skin aging, according to DermNet New Zealand.

The American Academy of Dermatology says a seborrheic keratosis may seem worrisome because it can look like a wart, a pre-cancerous skin growth or even skin cancer. However, despite their appearance, SKs are harmless.

How do SKs form?

Seborrheic means “greasy” and keratosis means “thickening of the skin.” Despite the name, SKs are not known to be caused by an abundance of sebum in the skin, nor are they limited to areas of increased oil production. The exact cause of SKs isn’t known, but some doctors feel that an overproduction of skin cells can cause a thickening of the skin in certain areas. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology offers that SKs are most likely hereditary, and they often are found on the trunk of the body and where the face meets the scalp. Sometimes seborrheic keratoses may erupt during pregnancy, following hormone replacement therapy or as a result of other medical problems.

Appearance of SKs Some of these growths have a warty, rough surface, while others look like dabs of warm, brown candle wax on the skin. ADA says they can range in color from white to black, but most are tan or brown. The appearance of SKs may change as one ages, and it is

even possible for them to fall off naturally over time. The Mayo Clinic says that, unless changes include becoming sore or bleeding without healing, there’s little need to act. SKs may form singularly, but often they appear in groups.

Cancer risk?

SKs have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to one’s health. Unlike moles, they will not turn into melanoma.

The superficial nature of SKs mean they can become irritated by clothing and grow.

Treatment Unless a seborrheic keratosis is in an area that causes constant irritation, there is really no need to seek treatment. However, dermatologists can remove them quite easily if they are unsightly or uncomfortable. A topical anesthetic, cryosurgery or laser therapy is possible. Generally little scarring is produced, offers AOCD. Although SKs are harmless, their appearance may be similar to skin conditions that are not. Those who are unsure about changes to the skin should always seek the help of a licensed dermatologist.

A Random Act of Kindness happened to me today. It made me think about what happened and what it meant to me. I was on my way home and decided to pick up a few things from Tops. As usual, walking through the store I loaded my basket and went to the checkout. I placed my items on the belt and checked my pocket and noticed I only had limited funds with me. Checking my items very closely I realized if I didn't purchase the coffee, I would have enough money. So I told the cashier not to ring up the coffee. At this point the couple behind me told the cashier to ring the coffee on

their purchases. I protested at first but suddenly I felt that it would make them feel good about Their Random Act of Kindness. I accepted and wished them the Very Merriest of Christmases. I started thinking about this. What happened? Did I try to turn their kindness into a kindness from me? Then I thought that I was missing the point of what happened. I was a little embarrassed about not having enough money with me. So I was trying very hard to find the way so I could blame something and that I was just a victim. I had more money home and could well afford the few dollars for the coffee. I began thinking that the Kindness I received has nothing to do about the $ 6.00.

It has nothing to do with who is at fault or not smart enough to bring more money. Or even Tops' fault for letting me grab too many items which started this in the first place. I want to thank the young couple for being there and bless them. A Random Act of Kindness and a smile go much further than the instant it takes to happen.

Kudos to the awesome group of singers who sang so wonderfully at Tops in Dansville on 12/1512/16. How refreshing to hear such beautiful music while shop-ping! I felt blessed to be a part of this sweet choir sharing their faith filled music with everyone. Huge thank you to Tops also for inviting such talent. God Bless you all!

Santa was accompanied by his elves and others to choose the most tastefully lighted homes and then give them "Secret Santa" gift cards from local businesses.

After one of Rudolph's antlers fell off Santa treated his crew to a warm Tim Hortons snack.
