Celebrating over 64 years in Webster!
One of the most common images associated with Valentine’s Day is that of a young cherub with bow in hand ready to aim an arrow at an unsuspecting sweetheart. This winged perpetrator of matchmaking mischief has become as much a part of Valentine’s Day celebrations as chocolate, flowers and other gifts. The instigator of romantic love goes by two different names, having ties to both ancient Greeks and Romans. This archery expert was known as Cupid by the ancient Romans and as Eros to the ancient Greeks and was the god of love. Eros’/Cupid’s family tree can be confusing. Some Greek mythology experts say Eros was the son of Nyx and Erebus, others Aphrodite and Aries. The Roman Cupid is believed to be the son of Venus and Mars, the goddess of love and god of war, respectively. Armed with a bow and quiver filled with golden arrows, Eros/Cupid took aim at both mortals and gods. Ancient poetry once portrayed Eros as a handsome immortal who was irresistible to both man and gods. But some time later he was increasingly described as a playful, mischievous child. Cupid was not a major character in mythology, but through time the playful child persona became linked to Valentine’s Day, helping to give Cupid/Eros a more noticeable presence. In the Middle Ages, Eros/Cupid continued to be a popular figure in art. Multiple winged archers, known as “amores or amorini” to Romans and “erotes” to Greeks, can be seen in many paintings of the period. In modern art, many people experienced difficulty distinguishing if the winged child was Cupid himself from mythology or the “putto,” a secular figure in a work of art depicted as a chubby male child, usually naked and sometimes winged. Nowadays, the terms “cupid,” “cherub” and “putto” are often used interchangeably to describe the image of a pudgy, winged child.

Aerial yoga is a relatively new form of the Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline of yoga. Inspired by aerial gymnastics, calisthenics, pilates, and, of course, yoga, aerial yoga is sometimes referred to as “antigravity yoga.” This unique form of yoga involves the use of hammocks suspended from the ceiling that support practitioners’ bodies, allowing them to work against gravity. Popular aerial yoga poses include aerial lunges, the half boat pose, the reclining angle pose, and the one-legged king pigeon pose. Though aerial yoga is a recent phenomenon, those interested in pursuing this unique form of exercise can seek more information at local yoga studios. Unlike traditional yoga that many people can practice at home without supervision, aerial yoga participants should only perform the poses under the supervision of professionals.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Should Women Still Take Estrogen? --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question concerning estradiol. My gynecologist has me taking 1 milligram of estradiol daily. My internist recommends that I not take it. Which recommendation should I follow? I have never had hot flashes, so that is not a problem. My internist says that I need to gradually stop taking the estradiol. He says that this medicine has more problems than benefits. It is hard to choose what to do. What do you recommend? -- H.L. ANSWER: Back in the 1990s, we often recommended that women take estrogen in order to prevent problems, in addition to treating hot flashes. Two important studies came out showing that estrogen appeared to cause problems as well as prevent them. The definitive answer as to whether estrogen causes more problems than it prevents still isn’t known, and it probably depends on many factors. The term “estrogen” as I am using it refers to a group of related compounds. Estradiol is sometimes referred to as “bioidentical,” since it is the same hormone that a woman’s body makes, as opposed to conjugated equine estrogen (Premarin), which was most commonly used in the 1990s and earlier. The type of estrogen may make a difference in terms of risk. Also, estrogen is seldom given without a progesterone compound in women who have not had their uterus removed, and the type of progesterone appears to make a major difference in risk. Briefly, the evidence suggests that estrogen reduces the risk of colon cancer and of osteoporosis and fractures. However, it increases the risk of blood clots. The largest areas of confusion are in breast cancer and heart disease. For conjugated estrogens with medroxyprogesterone, which has the best information, for 1,000 women in 10 years there were seven more heart attacks, eight more strokes, eight more blood clots in the lungs and eight more invasive breast cancers, but six fewer colon cancers and five fewer hip fractures. Recent data suggest that women who start estrogen immediately at menopause have a lower risk of heart disease than those who start five or 10 years after menopause (in fact, they may have an overall lower risk, compared with women who don’t take estrogen). Women who took estrogen alone did not have an increased risk of breast cancer. Because of the known harms of estrogen, at this time neither I nor any expert body recommends taking estrogen just to prevent problems. Until new studies become available, since you have no hot flashes, I agree with your internist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I wanted to tell you of the unbelievable relief I’ve gotten from the small, very painful cracks that used to develop at the ends of my fingers next to the nails, usually in the winter. Since I started taking 1,000 mg of fish oil once a day, I have had only one crack. -- R.L.S. ANSWER: I couldn’t find any studies on this, but anecdotal reports say fish oil may be helpful and is unlikely to harm. It’s reasonable to give it a try. I would recommend a supplement that contains both EPA and DHA. The Costco brand was found to be of high quality. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.

HOCUS-FOCUS 1. Sign is missing. 2. Dog’s ear is shorter. 3. Mitten is removed. 4. Sun is missing. 5. Book is missing. 6. Cap is missing.
Provided by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Every year, starting in late December and continuing into March, male whitetailed deer shed their antlers as their testosterone levels drop in response to the lengthening days. By late winter and early spring, eager shed hunters head out into the woods and fields to look for these hidden treasures. Finding a single shed is a thrill, but finding a matching set, or those of a purely impressive adult buck, is worth more than their weight in gold to many. For the inexperienced, it might seem like looking for a needle in a haystack, but for the avid shed hunter with a trained eye it’s worth the effort. And, if your dog enjoys accompanying you in the woods, you can learn about shed hunting with a dog in the February 2017 issue of the Conservationist, a New York State Department of Conservation publication. Winter deer yards are good places to start. During bouts of extreme cold and snow, deer will congregate in lower elevation areas with good southern exposure and evergreen cover to break the wind. Experienced shed hunters scout
these areas pre-season in hopes of increasing their odds. Shed hunting is a great way to get outside as the weather breaks in late winter/early spring. It can also provide the experienced hunters with clues as to what kinds of bucks will be around in the fall during the next hunting season. Remember, “Let Young Bucks Go and Watch Them Grow” to see bucks with bigger, more impressive antlers -- a treasure worth looking for.

Assistive devices help people remain mobile Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. • Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. • Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. • Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” • Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the
SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

Rolling walkers are assistive devices that can keep individuals mobile despite cognitive or physical disabilities.
person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.
