While cats are thought by many to be aloof and less feeling than dogs, science says otherwise. According to the book “What Cats Are Made Of,” by Hanoch Piven, a cat’s brain is biologically more similar to a human brain than it is to a dog’s. Both humans and cats have identical regions in their brains that are responsible for emotions.

My Journey of Inspiration “Living the Dream” By Courtney Cullinan In 2009 Rick Cullinan climbed Kilimanjaro. He was in remission of esophageal cancer that would later take his life. “Living the Dream” became his famous quote when caught on video when he was interviewed. He celebrated the joy and beauty of this amazing experience as only someone who knows definitely that there are so many days offered on this earth. Ten years later his daughter Courtney will commemorate his life and passion in March 2019 on her journey to Tanzania to scale Mount Kilimanjaro. Her six-day trek will take her through every ecological zone on the planet. “When my dad died I felt empty. My outlook on life was changed.” Time doesn’t slow down, life doesn’t play favorites. I thought about how short 25 years was. If I have learned anything from my father’s life he never gave up. He put others’ needs before his own. To value each breath we take. To value the relationships of those we love. “A father is someone who guides his daughter through life and now, even in death, you are guiding me. You are constantly showing me that love never dies.”
It’s about giving back, too. I have chosen to raise money for the fight against cancer and donate it to the Wilmot Cancer Institute, but I need you. Your tax-deductible donations to the Wilmot Cancer Institute will ensure that cancer research, education, and other services will continue. To contribute, mail checks payable to the Wilmot Cancer Institute (note “on behalf of Courtney Cullinan”) to:
I would like to express my gratitude to Rick French and Yusuf for helping make my dream of this trip become reality. I would also like to thank my family and friends for their love and support on my journey. To my JOI family who has encouraged and guided me from day one, helping me prepare for my climb. Also, to the Wilmot Cancer Institute and Doctors for the treatment and hope you gave my father.
To contribute towards Courtney’s trip expenses mail checks payable to Pack, Paddle, & Ski (note “on behalf of Courtney Cullinan”) to the same address.
Over one million Americans are diagnosed with cancer, and it’s estimated that there were over 600,000 deaths in 2017. Cancer has touched every one of us in some way. This trip is not just about my own healing and a way to have a sense of closure.
For more information on the trip, contact Courtney at 585-447-3449, Tiffany Paine at the Wilmot Cancer Institute at 585-276-4715, or Rick French at Pack, Paddle, & Ski at 585-346-5597 (info@packpaddleski.com).

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2018
H O R O SC O P E S ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Stop being the wool-gathering Lamb, and start turning that dream project into reality. You have the ideas, the drive and the charisma to persuade others to follow your lead. So do it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’ve scored some big successes. But remember that all hardworking Ferdinands and Ferdinandas need some time to restore their energies and refresh their spirits. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re gaining a stronger mental image of what you’re trying to achieve. Now look for the facts that will help get this to develop from a concept into a solid proposal. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Some of you eager-to-please Moon Children might want to delay some decisions until midweek, when you can again think more with your head than your heart. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A new business venture seems to offer everything you’ve been looking for. But be careful that that rosy picture doesn’t betray traces of red ink under the surface. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A volatile situation needs the kind of thoughtful and considerate care you can provide right now. There’ll be plenty of time later to analyze what might have gone wrong. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your loyalty to a friend in a tough situation earns you respect from people you care about. Those who criticize you don’t understand what friendship is all about. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your strong work ethic is rewarded with the kind of challenging opportunity you love to tackle. Now, go ahead and celebrate with family and/or close friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A legal matter you thought had been finally resolved could require a second look. But don’t make any moves without consulting your lawyer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking charge is what you like to do, and since you do it so well, expect to be asked to lead a special group. This could open an exciting new vista for you. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An important matter might wind up being entrusted to you for handling. The responsibility is heavy, but you’ll have support from people able and eager to help. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A spouse or partner might make an important, even life-changing, suggestion. Consider it carefully. It could hold some of the answers you’ve both been looking for. BORN THIS WEEK: You always try to do the right thing, and for the right reasons. No wonder people have come to depend on you. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Saturday, March 10 - 9 AM LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.
--DEAR DR. ROACH: A year ago, I broke out with pimples on my back, arms and thighs. They itched so badly I thought I would go mad. A dermatologist took a biopsy and told me it was an autoimmune disease called bullous pemphigoid. I was started on prednisone and doxycycline. When it cleared up, I would stop the medication, but it came back. The doctor said she thinks I’ll have to take medication for the rest of my life. I don’t like taking this medication, as it blurs my eyesight and I lose energy. I also have osteoporosis. I do take some vitamins. -- G.B. ANSWER: Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune disease that causes blisters, mostly in older adults. The blisters are large and tense (as opposed to pemphigus, an even more dangerous autoimmune disease, in which the blisters are soft). Bullous pemphigoid tends to come and go over months or even years. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy. The usual treatment for bullous pemphigoid is a corticosteroid, either topical or systemic. Since it was over such an extended area of your body, your dermatologist decided on systemic, at a moderate dose of 20 mg. Prednisone has many long-term side effects, including making your osteoporosis much worse. Further, I am concerned that the blurry vision could indicate the onset of diabetes or a cataract, as both are strongly associated with chronic steroid use. Your regular doctor should be testing you for diabetes and treating the osteoporosis, and should make sure that you see the eye doctor. Certain medications, such as the doxycycline she started you on, can reduce your need for steroids. Other medications used for autoimmune disease can further reduce the need for steroids, but azathioprine, methotrexate, mycophenolate and others have serious side effects of their own. Nicotinamide, also called vitamin B-3, can make the doxycycline more effective. Although bullous pemphigoid sometimes does go away, I agree with your doctor that you are likely to need some medication long term; however, she may be able to reduce the dosages. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My adult daughter contracted ringworm or some other fungus from her beautiful Border Collie. She has been using over-the-counter meds on the two of them for over 10 months! The dog is doing better than my daughter. Any solutions to get rid of this once and for all? -- E.B. ANSWER: Ten months is too long to treat something empirically. It’s time to find out what this fungus might be, and that means a visit to a dermatologist, who can do a culture of the infection to find out what it is. There are some unusual fungi that can be passed from animals (dogs, cats, pigs, horses, cattle) to humans and cause skin infection. Rarely is systemic treatment necessary. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE BOB FRANKEN COLUMN By Bob Franken
Sad Advice From the Poet “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.” We can thank Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and biographer Carl Sandburg for that bit of wisdom. It’s standard operating procedure for trial lawyers and certainly for politicians, both of whom could be best described as “anti-poets.” It’s clearly a way of life for the most obscene practitioner of these dark arts. I refer, of course, to the table-pounder in chief Donald Trump, who has gone quite far with it. His accomplishments include winning the presidency and allegedly having sex with Stormy Daniels. But I digress. Notice that I said “allegedly.” There is an even more jarring “allegedly,” this one being the alleged crime that Trump himself may have committed. Special counsel Robert Mueller appears to be vigorously exploring whether the president obstructed justice as Mueller ratchets up his investigation into whether Trump or figures in Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russian government in the alleged (there’s that word again) theft of the U.S. election. He and his people have interrogated Attorney General Jeff Sessions and have questioned James Comey, who was FBI director until President Trump fired him. Most ominously, Mueller now is negotiating with the White House to set parameters for questioning POTUS himself. It’s fair to point out that obstruction of justice is extremely hard to pin down. What might not be so elusive is a charge of money laundering by Trump and his circle of family and associates. That brings us back to that Carl Sandburg quote. The Donald Trump variation would be something like: “When the facts are against you, scream ‘fake news.’ If the law is against you, discredit the investigators. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the social media (or in his case, the antisocial media) and tweet like hell.” He and his protectors are trying to argue that the investigators are so biased against him that they cannot possibly do so credibly. He constantly makes accusations against Hillary Clinton and the Clintons in general, and he insists that this whole charge of Russian collusion is just sour grapes, an alibi for Democrats because Hillary forfeited the election to him. Meanwhile, Democrats continue to act like puppies who roll over on their backs the moment Trump and his pack of Republicans growl or even lift their legs to mark their territory. Their territory includes all of Washington, and the GOP made that abundantly clear with the confrontation that resulted in the brief government shutdown. It was brief because the Democrats folded the moment there was pushback. Their slogan might be “When the going gets tough, wimp out.” So now we have this brief respite, a couple of weeks, before another shutdown looms. Between now and then, the drama kings and queens on Capitol Hill will try to unravel the tangled immigration knot, with 700,000 “Dreamers” uncertain whether they will be deported. Meanwhile, the country is going down the tubes. Quoting Sandburg again, “In these times you have to be an optimist to open your eyes when you awake in the morning.” In these times, an optimist is someone who’s detached from reality. Seniors becoming more tech-savvy Technology is the future, and digital communication has opened many doors for people around the world. Although younger generations have grown up with technology at their fingers, Baby Boomers and older adults did not. But in spite of that, studies show that growing numbers of seniors are open to the idea of technology and even seeking ways to further their use and knowledge. According to a 2014 study by Pew Research Center, 59 percent of seniors regularly use the internet — a 6 percent increase from the previous study conducted in 2012. Today, 67 percent of adults age 65 and older say they go online. Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016. While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their fitness regimens. Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home, or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby. SilverSurfers, a senior-based information website, says other tech that seniors are embracing includes online dating; audio and digital books; online shopping, which is especially valuable to seniors who have mobility issues; and social media, which can keep seniors connected to others and feeling less lonely. A study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco found 18 percent of American seniors live alone, and 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness can increase death risk. Social media and internet connectivity can be an important tool in helping seniors feel like active members of society. Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage.

There's so much beauty and kindness around us but it's too often overshadowed by sad news. My day was brightened, however, during a recent shopping trip when a lovely young lady stopped me and offered a beautiful bouquet of flowers. When she asked, "Would you like these?" I said, "That's so nice of you, but may I pay you for them?" She replied, "No I just want you to have them." She then offered the receipt for her purchase. On Wednesday, January 24th at Overwhelmed, I thanked her and the Applebee’s in Geneseo we gave her a big hug. Before we were enjoying lunch. Another neighbor not only took my dog's leash, but also offered to keep him at her home until being picked up, after I left in an ambulance. Experiences like this give me faith in the true kindness and generosity of our neighbors and why living in a small town is like always being among friends. I am now at home, doing okay.
your GARBAGE MOUTH. Three role models for that child. How impressive! Local beautiful church, with glass window front, with flags of
different countries flying in front of it. Please take a minute to look at the 2 United States Flags, they are torn and shabby. I hope next time I drive by, I will see new ones in their place. Thank you! People wear too much perfume and aftershave when they are out in
public causing major breathing problems for those with allergies or other health problems. You may not be able to smell it but others do and then have to leave the room when they have trouble breathing. It is even worse for those stuck on a bus trip or in a meeting, restaurant, or a vehicle.

ECO-FRIENDLY WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Offer living plants. Cut flowers certainly look beautiful, but they may require many resources for planting, cutting and transporting. That’s especially true for non-native, out-of-season flowers. Potted plants can live indefinitely as long as they are cared for properly.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Ask around. Some individuals may hesitate to seek networking advice out of fear of appearing opportunistic. But successful professionals understand the need to network, so your colleagues will likely be glad to offer referrals if they’re in a position to do so. When receiving a referral, ask if you can use the person’s name, which should help you establish a connection during the introductory process. Resist the idea that using a colleague’s name when meeting a professional you hope to work with is something sinister, as the name will only help you with the introduction. Once the introduction has been made, it’s up to you to do the rest.
