AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt.

DID YOU KNOW? If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

D id you k now ? M any homeow ners prefer the look and durability of real hardw ood flooring. It can be exciting to install new flooring, and you may be anxious to start transforming a room. But before di ving right in, it’s necessary to acclimate w ood flooring to a home. Otherw ise, you may end up w ith buckled w ood or other problems. Hardw ood flooring needs to sit in the room w here it w ill be installed for anyw here betw een five and 10 days or in adherence to the manufacturer recommendations. This gives the new flooring time to adjust to the humidity level and temperature of the home. Natural w ood shrinks and expands due to temperature fluc tuations, w hich is w hy it is essential to match the conditions in the home before w orking w ith the flooring. The boards can be acclimated in the boxes (w ith the ends opened) or outside of the boxes.

966-9727 MASONRY & BASEMENT DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

Dan Fox 585-208-8144 triggerboy322@aol.com Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

On Saturday, April 8th the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. The late snowstorm prevented us from going outside so we adjusted and held the event in the Maher Lodge. The hunters also were treated to arts & crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos, and a jelly bean guessing contest. Thanks go out to the organizations and individuals that made this event possible. David Thomas, Recreation Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you for the wonderful call I received on April Fool’s Day regarding the March 31st Give & Take column about a treadmill that you had available. We came to pick it up and you even helped load it. It was raining and we had nothing to cover it up with and you gave us a tarp. I want to thank you for help loading it and it works great! Thanks again and

God Bless You and your wife. Thank you, Woman from Cohocton

put up as shelter, junk all over the yard, bushes overgrown and it is causing rodents. The house has no power, never a light on and no one is living inside. I don’t understand why nothing is done about this. It is not fair to the neighbors who live around this house and pay taxes. Clean up your yard or vacate the premises.

April Fool’s Surprise! We thank whoever paid for our coffee and donuts including tip at the Town & Country restaurant in Batavia on April 1st. We shall pay it forward. Ann & Louie Amazing Concert! I want to congratulate all the excellent musicians at the GWMEA All-County Festival held on Saturday, April 1st. The music was performed in such an outstanding manner, everyone involved should be very proud. To the teachers who worked so diligently to get the kids ready, you did a terrific job! To the conductors for the performance, your heart and soul was felt throughout the entire group. The choice of music was really good and to see the kids so in tune and excited to perform, was fantastic! Please continue to sacrifice your time and talent to put on these celebrations of the arts in our public and catholic schools. Thank you again for all your hard work, especially St. Joseph’s and Alexander who were represented extremely well. We really enjoyed it and look forward to next year!

A local farm has recently had a second wind turbine built. Since then, our area has had 3 “brownouts.” Does anyone know if this can be the cause of our recent outages? Of course the power company denies that this can be the cause. Online research says it is possible. When our power company was questioned about damage to home appliances such as: refrigerators, freezers, water systems, etc. caused by low voltage, their answer was “Don’t you have home insurance to cover this?” Which will cost us after they increase our policies. Perhaps recourse to replace burned out appliances would be to go after those who had them installed and also hold the power company that installed them responsible for costs. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have seen a backyard that is a disaster. They are possibly even living back there. Tarps

On Saturday, February 4th at the local dollar store, I dropped my green change purse with the letter N on one side. I went back to the store after I realized it was missing and was told by the manager that she gave it to a woman who said it belonged to her. It did NOT belong to you...that was MY purse and money that you STOLE. It was my grocery money for the week! Shame on you!!! To the person who left his/her Styrofoam coffee cup sitting on a log along a trail at Mendon Ponds Park: What did you think was going to happen to it? If you are not going to respect the park or the environment, perhaps you should drink your coffee at home, in your car, or at your local coffee shop.

The book chronicles their courtship and is the first histocical novel in the Dauntless Series. Ms. Gehret’s interest in Susan B. Anthony and her family began when she was a docent at the local Susan B. Anthony House and museum in 1992 and later portrayed the famous suffragette. DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several more sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete it, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. -- R.M. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room. The booklet on back problems gives an outline of some causes of and treatments for the more-common back maladies. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 303W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: We recently lost a dear relative to cholangiocarcinoma. He had served in the Navy in Vietnam. The probable cause of his cancer was from a parasite, a river fluke, which is common to that region. The diagnosis came way too late to save his life. How can veterans be tested or diagnosed early enough for a possible successful cure? Are there any current tests available? -- J.A.E. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your relative. Cholangiocarcinoma is cancer of the bile duct, a rare cancer. Liver flukes are a risk factor, and so is a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition associated with ulcerative colitis. The cancer is rare but highly lethal, because by the time symptoms show up, the cancer usually is advanced. Also because of its rarity, screening for the cancer in a general population won’t be effective. However, for people at high risk, such as those with PSC or a history of liver parasites, at least one study has shown that screening with a blood test (CA 19-9, CEA) or by endoscopy can be effective. It would be reasonable to speak with the expert taking care of this problem, usually a gastroenterologist, about screening. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Because Life is Better With Friends! By Linda Chadderdon

Recently my coworker and I had the privilege to sit down with 2 couples who participate in the Home Visitation Program in Genesee County. Both couples are older adults. Don and Audrey are in their early eighties and are members of our program to receive visits. Ken and Judy are retired and volunteer for the program and have been visiting Don and Audrey for two to three years now. When we arrived, the energy in the room was amazing! Through the program these four people have become fast friends. When we asked what makes this program work, their answers were quick. For Don and Audrey, Ken and Judy have provided friendship, acceptance and an additional sense of family. At their weekly visits they routinely share a snack, have insider jokes and have come to know each other well. Because they don’t have anyone close by to help, Ken and Judy check up on things they may need, have helped with yard work and also with connections to other services they have needed. Ken and Judy visit about once a week and both couples look forward to their visits. Don and Audrey know that they will always be there for them if they have a problem. Ken and Judy volunteer and share of their time and talents in several ways and we are fortunate that the Home Visitation Program is one of those places. Ken talked about the adjustment to retirement and that he enjoys still being active and contributing to helping older adults as he did in his career. He considers helping older people to be his calling in life. Both are active people involved in life in many ways and they enjoy the sense of purpose in life and the rewards that come from helping others as part of this program. There are so many people in our community who are living alone and don’t have family members in the area. Most children of seniors are working and raising

their families and aren’t as available as they’d like to be for their parents. Being socially isolated has many potentially negative effects on an individual’s physical and mental health. The Home Visitation Program helps to provide the socialization that we all need. To qualify for visits a person needs to be a resident of Genesee County, socially isolated and sixty years of age or older. Our program is non-denominational and is staffed by volunteers so there is no cost to participate. Our volunteers must be over age eighteen, and all are interviewed and trained. We check references and do a background check on everyone before they make home visits. I think the strongest statement for our program came from Don as we were preparing to leave. He said that because of their friendship with Ken and Judy, even though he has health problems that make it impossible to get out and do things he used to do, he is happier now than he has ever been in his life. He has things to look forward to that he enjoys every week. The Home Visitation Program is one of the Muriel H. Marshall programs in Genesee County. The Program is administered by Catholic Charities. If you or a loved one could benefit from home visits or are interested in being able to volunteer for such a great program, call Sandy or Linda at Catholic Charities at 585-343-0614.

Your Arthritis linked to another condition People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients. What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage. Symptoms Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include · morning stiffness and tiredness; · tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons; · swollen fingers and toes;

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can avoid injury but still get healthy.

· reduced range of motion; · nail changes, including pitting, and · redness and pain in the eyes. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam. Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-thecounter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis.org/psa-screening.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On May 2, 1964, an explosion of a charge assumed to have been placed by Viet Cong terrorists sinks the USNS Card at its dock in Saigon. THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. We are also an equal opportunity employer of individuals with disabilities and protected veterans. *Restrictions apply; inquire for details.

Entering the job market for the first time or reentering it w ith a new career direction can be intimidating. Focusing education and skills on careers that are proven w inners can be the security and confidence boost professionals need.

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers.
