Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Keep Winter Energy Bills in Check (Family Features) As w inter temperatures drop, the potential for higher utility bills goes up. Taking steps ahead of the cold season can help you trim costs and make your home more energy efficient, keeping those utility bills in check even as the w inter w eather rages. Before w inter w eather sets in for your part of the country, take some time to assess your home for potential problem areas and improvements that can help low er your energy costs. Lighting. Though turning off unneeded lights is a smart strategy any time of year, it’s especially helpful during the w inter months w hen utility expenses can add up. New technology lets you manage your lights aw ay from home using an app on your smartphone. Water heaters. Heat isn’t the only system that gets an extra w orkout come w inter. Cooler house temperatures may require w ater heaters to w ork harder, so ensuring you have a model w ell-suited to your family’s year-round needs is key. In fact, heating w ater is the second source of energy use in the residential home after space heating and cooling, w ith standard electric w ater heaters costing the average homeow ner $585 every year to operate. Thermostat. A programmable thermostat is easy to install and saves energy (and money) by automatically adjusting to predetermined temperature settings. Air leaks. An airtight house is critical to managing your heatrelated expenses. Sealing cracks around those w indow s and doors, and other leak-prone areas such as the basement and attic, w ill help keep heat inside and costs dow n.

GENERAL CONTRACTING
On the surfac e, hiring a landscaping service may seem like a costly venture. How ever, after crunching some numbers, many homeow ners realize that doing the w ork themselves may cost more in the long run than hiring a professional landscaping servic e. Homeow ners w ho dec ide to go it alone must purchase expensive equipment, and those law n tools w ill require routine maintenance, w hich costs additional money. Inexperienced homeow ners may incur extra fees to “ fix” mistakes that occur during the learning process. Each year, new seed, fertilizer, mulch, pesticides, and other supplies also must be purchased. But professional law n care services typically charge a set fee per month, and that fee covers the maintenanc e of both your property and the equipment needed to keep that property looking great. “ Though a tree grow s so high, the falling leaves return to the root.” - M alay proverb
KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Fight intruders with odor. Stray cats may mistake gardens for litter boxes and enter them to relieve themselves. Preventing such intrusions can be as simple as placing items around the garden to reduce the likelihood that gardens will be mistaken for litter boxes. Peels from oranges and lemons or coffee grounds can be placed in the garden and can emit odors strong enough to deter cats.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE
FRESHEN UP YOUR HOM E FOR THE SPRING SEASON
Lack of sunlight: All plants need the proper ratio of sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight and plant blades can scorch. Too little sunlight and grass may turn brown and die. Although there are shade-tolerant varieties of grass, homeowners also can explore alternative landscapes. Work in a garden bed or create a design that utilizes gravel or mulch. Avoid aggressively pruning back trees to give the lawn more sunlight in that area, as this may just damage the trees.
Clean existing light fixtures. Another w ay to brighten the mood in a home is to periodically clean light fixtures to make sure they are w orking effectively. Spend time dusting them and cleaning off any accumulated debris. If need be, sw itch out old lamp shades for new er ones that let more light shine through. If inadequate lighting is a problem no matter how many lamps you have, consult w ith an electrician about installing more overhead and accent lighting.
OTHER How t o soundproof your hom e W hat’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding w hic h rooms have the least amount of sound resistance. To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and w indow s. Take a quick w alk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate w hich ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room w here volumes w ill be blasting on TV’s and stereos. W ith this information, you should have a good idea of w here you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet: Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help w ith the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow dow n the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home. Insulate your w alls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors w on’t just drive aw ay excess noise, it w ill also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and c old months. For the best sound proofing and easy installation quality. Seal up all cracks and holes around w indow s and doors, and add double glazed w indow s to your current glass panes. Once you’ve selected the best soundproofing method, implement it and enjoy the bliss of silence throughout your home.

Coping as a family caregiver Individuals are born into the world requiring the care of their parents and other adult guardians to grow and thrive. These adult children, in turn, may end up providing care when their parents reach senior age or face an illness or disability. Becoming a family caregiver frequently is a tough choice to make. It requires patience and time, and can be emotionally and physically taxing. An estimated 43.5 million adults in the United States have provided unpaid care to an adult or a child in the prior 12 months, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP Public Policy Institute. It’s not uncommon for caregivers of any age to feel stressed and burned out by the demands of caregiving. The Mayo Clinic says people who experience caregiver stress can be vulnerable to changes in their own health. Some signs of caregiver stress include: · Feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried · Feeling tired most of the time · Gaining or losing a lot of weight · Becoming easily irritated or angry · Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy · Having frequent headaches, bodily pain or other physical problems Some caregivers even resort to drugs and alcohol to selfmedicate, which can lead to further issues. To avoid the potential pitfalls of caregiver stress, individuals should always put their needs first and find ways to alleviate the added stress of caring for a loved one. These suggestions are just a start. Don’t strive for perfection It isn’t possible to maintain a patient attitude and get everything done perfectly each and every day. People are not

perfect and mistakes will be made. Do not punish yourself if you lash out or simply need a break. Eat healthy As anyone who has dealt with a hungry toddler can attest, failure to eat well and frequently can result in an emotional meltdown. Be sure to always make time for nutritious meals. This will help keep up energy stores and enable you to better cope with caregiver stress. Pay attention to mood changes Anxiety or depression can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Ask for help if you feel your tasks are becoming too overwhelming. Seek the help of a doctor if changes in mood, sleeping patterns, appetite, and the like become noticeable. Take frequent breaks Getting a break from caregiving and setting aside time for yourself can increase patience levels and the ability to bounce back from stress. Whenever possible, have a friend or another relative step in for you so you get a break. Explore resources available for professional aides to come and take some of the responsibilities off of your shoulders. Being a caregiver can be a rewarding, but challenging role to play. Caregivers should keep their health a priority.

This Really Happened… By Helen DiStefano
Saturday afternoon as I was leaving Wegmans Caulkins Road supermarket, a store that I have been shopping at since 1997 (I have been a shopper at Wegmans since 1949), a gentleman standing in the exit pathway asked me a question as I approached where he was standing. I stopped the electric cart. At age 85, these power-driven carts are now my method of getting through these large stores. He asked me if I drive a 2004 gray Ford Taurus. I peered at him with a surprised look on my face for that exactly described my car. With a short delay in my response, I answered “yes.” My question to him: “I don’t believe I know you, how do you know my car”? He then explained. On his way into the store he found a white bank envelope on the ground near the Ford. It contained a few bills. He picked it up and continued on his way into the store. It then occurred to him, “How do I find the owner of this lost money? It probably belongs to whomever drives this car, but how will I find who drives this car”? Readers, as you read the rest of this story, I’m sure you will be amazed as I was his solution in finding an answer to his questions. After entering the store, this man stood by near the last cash out cashier stand and, as shoppers walked by on their exit travels, he asked each one the question that he had asked me. He must have been there 20 30 minutes for that is how long I was in the store shopping. He handed me the white envelope with the money in it. To my amazement, yes, it was mine! I had not missed it as of yet.
The name on it was a relative I explained to him; I then told him my name. I sat there in the motorized cart looking at him and repeating my gratitude and expressing my appreciation: your thoughtfulness, your kindness to go out of the way to find the owner and return the money, your idea to find the owner that was quite original. I cannot express to you as deeply as I would like to impress you the goodness of this one shopper. Have you ever heard of such a beautiful act of kindness? A great failure on my part; I was taken aback by his goodness and, not thinking, did not ask for his name. I did learn that he lived nearby, which would be Henrietta, and often shops at Wegmans. To the reader who is the shopper that I tell about in this story, I want you to know that it was not until I arrived home that I realized that I did not ask your name or offer a reward. God knows your name and how you took the time to help someone. His reward is far greater than mine could ever be. What I will do is to pass on your act of kindness. On occasion, I send money to a needy family at Rochester City School #34. With my next donation, I will tell them I am sending this time to honor you, a nameless shopper.

On the rainy morning of 3/31/2017 my son hydroplaned, snapped a pole and flipped his car, resting on driver’s side. Most frightening experience as a mother I have endured. If you plow your own driveway or you have someone plow your driveway and you live on a busy road, don’t push the snow across the road! Not only is it illegal but it’s also very dangerous. Especially when the road you’re on is nice clean and salted and you’re driving the speed limit then all of a sudden come up on snow that’s on the road from someone pushing it across. It’s hazardous and can cause people to lose traction.
We are in the process of moving out of state so we decided to have a sale to liquidate most of our belongings. However, one of the items was not our turtle stone by our walk. Claiming to be our “neighbor” who wanted a memento was hardly thoughtful when you knew we weren’t there at the time of the sale. The gentleman running the sale
took you at your word and yes, he should have told you to come back when we were there, but we are upset with you, not him. None of our neighbors would have shown such disrespect for our property. The mess you left in our garden was not appreciated as well as the loss of the perennials you disrupted! We had planned on taking the stone to our new home as a very special friend had given it to us. It amazes us of the gall of some people.
Recently I went to a local second hand store on a Saturday. Being as it was crowded, to be considerate; I left my cart at the end of the aisle. I was looking as to not block the way. Someone stole an item (deer plaque) out of my cart. We are all there to enjoy. To Whom It May Concern: Really?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been contending with blepharospasm for years. I got some relief from Botox for around four years, but then it stopped working and my doctor moved me to Dysport, which was horrible. It did not relax my symptoms, and it made me constantly very uncomfortable (with a feeling that my eyes were swollen all the time). I stopped the treatments and have been able to cope, until the past six months. I am almost unable to read, look at a computer screen or drive. Do you have any suggestions? I use Ativan to try to relax the stress of the blinking, but even that has lost its effect. I have been discouraged from getting a limited myectomy because of the risks. My ophthalmologist said that a neurologist would be a waste of time. I am desperate for another opinion. -- B.B. ANSWER: Blepharospasm is an uncontrollable muscle spasm around the eyes, often causing blinking and twitching. It ranges from occasional and mild to the much more severe and disabling condition you report. Treatment with botulinum toxin is effective for most people. Botulinum toxin, directly injected into muscle, weakens or paralyzes the muscle. There are three types of botulinum toxin A currently available in the United States: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, as well as botulinum toxin B (Myobloc). I suspect your ophthalmologist changed brands because of the concern of antibodies your body may have developed to the Botox. I would never say that a neurologist would be a waste of time. Blepharospasm is a limited form of dystonia, and neurologists are the experts in dystonia. The neurologist will have an opinion on trying a different form of botulinum toxin, as well as other treatments. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 61-year-old woman who was diagnosed with notalgia paresthetica about five years ago. Several years later, my general practitioner told me to use capsaicin, which helps with the tingling feeling, but sometimes it feels like someone is pinching my spine and the skin tingles, bringing on a very uncomfortable feeling. Can you tell me any more about this skin condition? I am beginning to believe that it is getting worse. -- Anon. ANSWER: Notalgia paresthetica is common, but often not diagnosed, and usually causes an itching under one shoulder blade. It sometimes is associated with curvature of the spine (scoliosis). It isn’t curable, and often gets better and worse. Capsaicin, lidocaine patch and other creams usually provide some relief. Botulinum toxin and nerve block occasionally are used for people with more severe symptoms who don’t respond. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old male with mild Parkinson’s disease and Type 2 diabetes. I can walk about 10 feet before becoming terribly short of breath and weak. I have been this way for several years, and it has become increasingly worse. Can you help me? -- K.C. ANSWER: Neither Parkinson’s disease nor Type 2 diabetes explains terrible shortness of breath on mild exertion. Severe shortness of breath can come from serious heart or lung problems (many types) or severe anemia. I can’t help: Get to your doctor right away. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want.
