SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Meeting a former adversary might be unsettling at first. But time has softened hard feelings, and you could be on the brink of starting a new relationship. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A troubling situation close to home might cause you to change your travel plans. But getting all the facts before you act might cause you to reconsider. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might be quite alone right now in deciding to support a major workplace shift. But others will join you as new information supports your bold move. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A former co-worker returns with news that could persuade you to reassess recently made plans. Be sure to consult with a trusted colleague before you act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your motives behind a recent decision could be called into question by a rival. But once you present the facts, all doubts will be resolved. Enjoy an artsrich weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: While you love being the center of attention, your generous heart allows you to share the attention with others. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Avoid aches and pains when gardening People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body. Thankfully, there are several ways that gardening enthusiasts can prevent the aches and pains that can sometimes pop up after long days in the garden. • Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury. • Alternate tasks. Repetitive-strain injuries can affect gardeners who spend long periods of time performing the same activity in their gardens. By alternating tasks during gardening sessions, gardeners can reduce their risk of suffering repetitive strain injuries. Alternate tasks not just on muscle groups worked, but also level of difficulty. Remember to include some simple jobs even on busy gardening days so the body gets a break. • Take frequent breaks. Frequent breaks can help combat the
stiffness and muscle aches that may not appear until gardeners finish their gardening sessions. Breaks help to alleviate muscles or joints that can become overtaxed when gardening for long, uninterrupted periods of time. When leaning down or working on your hands and knees, stand up to take breaks every 20 minutes or the moment aches and pains start to make their presence felt. • Maintain good posture. Back injuries have a tendency to linger, which can keep gardeners indoors and out of their gardens. When gardening, maintain good posture to prevent back injuries. Gardening back braces can protect the back by providing support and making it easier for gardeners to maintain their posture. Tool pouches attached to gardening stools or chairs also can be less taxing on the back than gardening belts tied around the waist. Gardening might not be a contact sport, but it can cause pain if gardeners do not take steps to prevent the onset of muscle aches and strains when spending time in their gardens.
Marge, like some people her age, can’t drive anymore. She gave up her keys. But she could use a lift... a visit to a doctor, a trip to the grocery store, a stop at the bank. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Does an Aspirin a Day Keep Heart Risk at Bay?
Magic Maze MANLY WORDS
--DEAR DR. ROACH: A column in a popular consumer magazine states that taking a baby aspirin daily does more harm than good, and it should not be taken unless you have heart disease. I have been taking a baby aspirin daily for 10 years, and now I’m concerned. Your thoughts, please. -- G.D. ANSWER: Experts disagree on the best advice. Some points, however, are not controversial: Aspirin is beneficial for reducing future heart risks in people with established heart disease, but it increases the risk of bleeding events. Some of these are minor, but a few are potentially life-threatening. According to a recent review of published studies, in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease, a daily aspirin reduces the risk of a nonfatal heart attack by about 20 percent, without significantly changing stroke risk or risk of dying from heart disease. Risk of bleeding is increased by 50 percent. Also, newer evidence suggests that aspirin may decrease the risk of some cancers, especially colon cancer. Aspirin is more likely to have a net benefit in people with higher risk of heart disease, even if it isn’t diagnosed. The decision of taking aspirin should be made after a thorough review of all your individual risk factors, including heart disease risk and history of bleeding, and possibly colon cancer risk. When I discuss aspirin with patients, I very seldom recommend it to anyone with no known coronary disease who has had a significant side effect (such as bleeding) with aspirin in the past. As more studies are failing to show benefit, these recommendations may change. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 48-year-old woman in pretty good health. I was a smoker for 30-plus years and quit about three years ago. I don’t have any signs of COPD or other lung ailments yet, but I fear they are just around the corner. My question is, is there anything I can do now to postpone or prevent the onset of these diseases, or at least decrease their severity? -- V.M. ANSWER: Not all smokers will develop COPD. Some smokers are more susceptible than others to the effects of the many toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke. Conversely, some nonsmokers can develop COPD, especially those who lack a protective enzyme, alpha-1 antitrypsin; this is more likely in those exposed to secondhand smoke or other airborne pollutants. Quitting smoking is by far the most important action you can take to reduce your risk of developing lung disease, but there may be others. Avoid other airborne pollutants, especially other smokers, but also dusts and fumes. Some preliminary evidence suggests that statin drugs might slow down COPD, but there are conflicting studies, and I don’t recommend them just for COPD. Regular exercise may help, and it certainly helps your heart and many other systems. The booklet on COPD explains in detail both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 601W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2018 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

VISUALLY IMPAIRED READER INSPIRES AUTHOR (NAPSI)—Four years ago, bestselling author Mary Jane Clark spoke at the Friends of the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped’s Fall Festival. There, she met Ottilie Lucas, a former rehabilitation teacher for people with macular degeneration and other disabilities who is visually impaired herself. After the festival, “we continued our correspondence and one thing led to another,” Lucas says of Clark. “She decided to include a character in her next book with macular degeneration.” And so was born Terri Donovan, introduced in the first book in Clark’s Wedding Cake Mysteries series, 2011’s “To Have and to Kill.” “Mary Jane asked me to give her ways to identify symptoms that a person may be experiencing macular degeneration,” Lucas says. These include blurred vision and difficulty discerning the intensity of colors—symptoms shared by Terri Donovan, who runs a bakery and is the mother of the protagonist of Clark’s series, struggling actress Piper Donovan. Lucas, who was born with retinitis pigmentosa, became a patron of the New Jersey State Library Talking Book and Braille Center (TBBC) in 1966. TBBC is among more than 100 libraries across the United States affiliated with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), part of the Library of Congress. NLS oversees a free reading program for U.S. residents and citizens living abroad who are blind, have low vision, or cannot hold a book because of a physical disability. NLS patrons may choose from tens of thousands of books and dozens of magazines in audio and braille-including mysteries such as Mary Jane Clark’s. NLS also loans the portable playback equipment needed to read its audiobooks. Patrons may access books online through the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) service.

Lucas has been married 49 years and has been on more than 20 ocean cruises. “Ottilie is such an inspiration,” Clark says. “She helped me so much in the creation of Terri Donovan—a mother who faces macular degeneration head-on, who doesn’t feel sorry for herself and is determined to adapt to the challenges she faces. I wish I were as brave as Terri and Ottilie!” To learn more about how the NLS program can help you, a loved one or a friend, go online to www.loc.gov/nls or call 1-888-NLS-READ.

Girl Scouts of WNY announces Emily Osadciw as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout Submitted by: Susan Cook

Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Emily Osadciw of Webster, NY, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Osadciw’s project was titled Outdoor Garden Classroom. Osadciw explained, “I collaborated with Kittelberger Florist & Gifts to create an outdoor educational garden for the students at Plank South in Webster. I chose this project because it was a way for me to learn more about being a leader and take on my interests in teaching. Throughout the year, teachers can bring their students outside and incorporate what they’re learning into the gardens. I created the curriculum for each of the classes. For the beginning four classes, each student learned how to plant from seed and they were each able to take home their own garden essentials. For the final four classes, each student got to work in groups and plant parts of the whole garden area outside. This was a positive impact on my community because it not only gave students a chance to do fun educational activities after school, but it will give the teachers a way to teach hands-on in the gardens.” Osadciw added, “Girl Scouts have made a big difference in my life. It has taught me many valuable life skills such as leadership, problem solving, being courageous, and much more. I was able to get the opportunity to work with kids and teach them about lessons that I have learned throughout Girl Scouts.” Osadciw received her Gold Award at the Gold Award Ceremony on June 2, 2018. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something that a girl can be passionate about—in thought, deed, and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be
on-going or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities and to enter the military a full rank higher than her peers. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project. The Girl Scout submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Lastly, the project is used to educate and inspire others about the cause they are addressing. To learn more, visit␣gswny.org ␣

(NAPSI)—John and Jennie were renting a small house in Delray Beach, Florida when the perfect house came on the market: only four blocks from their rental home, 3,400 square feet, with five bedrooms and the biggest yard in the neighborhood. An excellent fit for their family of six. John has been a loan officer for 18 years and currently works for US Mortgage. He often advises his clients to consider a conventional mortgage with private mortgage insurance (PMI)—especially if they have a 5 to 10 percent down payment and good credit score. PMI is the private sector’s alternative to the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insurance, a government program backed by taxpayers. “I explain how a conventional mortgage with PMI could be their fastest and least expensive route. Many borrowers often think that FHA is their only option,” John said. What John And Jennie Did He followed his own advice and purchased his new home with a 5 percent down payment and a conventional mortgage with PMI. It was the best way to go for his family—but not because they didn’t have enough saved up. Why They Did It “Jennie and I could have put the full 20 percent down on this house. But many years ago, when I was new at this job, I helped a car dealer purchase a home. He had $75,000 in a savings account, but he said we couldn’t consider that to qualify him. He explained that was his ‘sleep at night’ account because he always had six to eight months of expenses in the bank in case he had a bad sales month or two,” John said. In the process of opening his own US Mortgage branch, John wanted to make sure he had plenty of capital reserves. He put less money down and left the rest in the bank in his own “sleep at night” account. John said, “I have a big family and I don’t want to worry. I guess you could say that PMI helps me to regularly get a good night’s sleep.” Learn More: Are you ready to purchase a home with a low down payment? Or should you wait to save more? You can find out with the aid of the calculator at www.mgic.com/buynow. Another good resource for home buyers is www.readynest.com.

Early Tuesday evening, I pulled my car into GearHeadz Auto Repair on Rt. 15 in Avon. My car had been acting very strangely, and the battery light was on. Michael Rubert asked me to pull my car to an open bay door. My car refused to start again. I had just finished my second day of work at a new job, and my two children were still at daycare, waiting for me. Mike didn't hesitate. He offered me his van, complete with the necessary car seats, to pick up my children. Then, even though his business hours had ended before I even walked in the door, he offered to repair my vehicle that night, the next morning at the latest. He drove to an auto parts store several
The condition of the old family cemeteries in the [local town] are a disgrace to the early settlers and their families who made the town what it is today. The pioneer cemetery across the street from my house has been mowed but only twice this year, and the second time they mowed they didn't even trim around the headstones. Another of the
towns away just to get the necessary part for my vehicle more quickly. When an issue arose, he was still there when I called, thinking I would leave a message, at 10:30 at night! Mike's kindness and his willingness to go above and beyond have earned both my gratitude and my future business. Thank you, GearHeadz! We'd like to thank everyone who supported the 26th annual St. Agnes School Golf Classic in Memory of Michael B. Hayes. This is a great celebration of our wonderful St. Agnes School and Genesee Valley community and a fond remembrance of our dear friend and brother Michael, and
we thank the players, guests, volunteers, the local businesses and patrons and the staff at Livingston Country Club and the Oaks for making our tournament a success! In today's day and age, we know your time and money is asked for a lot, and we want everyone know we sincerely appreciate your support. Thank you! Just wanted to say I appreciate people who pick up after their doggies and throw their baggies into any outdoor trash receptacles or toss them at home. You are doing a great job helping keep your area clean.
cemeteries had a large tree fall last year. All that was done was cut up the tree and leave it where it lays to this day. A few years ago, a lot of time and effort was put into fixing, straightening, and cleaning the stones in these cemeteries and cleaning the cemeteries in general. The surrounding towns do an excellent job of maintaining their cemeteries, why can't our town do the same? The [local town] deserves better.
delightful cheery flowers were mowed clear cut to the ground at their peak. Why? It doesn’t make any sense! They weren’t trees that we have been told must be taken down to “secure the banks of the canal” These were delicate plants that brought much joy and delight to the walkers and bikers on the Path. Not to mention the good they do in attracting bees. NYS Canal Authorities, please leave the wildflowers alone! Keep the mowers in the shop!
My husband and I walk the Canal Path in our Village every day. Lately, we have been in awe of the beauty and rich display of wildflowers of every color, size, scent and type. Absolutely gorgeous! “Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as these.” A splendid display! Then the State came through. These
Those little rascals sure can push buttons. But the thing is that if you've got buttons then they're bound to get pushed. Why get angry? They're the children; we're the adults, aren't we? Let’s try harder to NOT let others decide the kind of people we're going to be, especially when the other people are children.
A huge thank you to those who helped me retrieve my dog who escaped from his harness while on a walk in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood on July 7. I didn’t get your names—a family in a van and a man in a white SUV—I’m so grateful for all of your help. Thank you so much!
Once again, venturing thru [local town] risks our personal safety because some people don't follow right-of-way traffic regulations - the Monument at the center of town is a TRAFFIC CIRCLE & ALL FOUR routes entering said traffic circle are governed by YIELD signs, giving vehicles already proceeding within the clearly painted lane of the traffic circle the RIGHT-OFWAY... more than one vehicle can travel within the circle at the same time as long as a vehicle entering the circle DOES NOT infringe on the forward progress of any vehicle already within the traffic circle (a.k.a.; Right-of-Way) - The YIELD signs are large, bright, and clearly posted - if you don't understand traffic regulations: ask our local LEO to explain how it works before your severely injure yourself and/or others!! TNX!

GVPENNYSAVER.COM Intergrow Greenhouses, Inc. is now recruiting for our brand new Ontario, NY greenhouse! This job will start on-site in Ontario assisting with site preparation for approximately 2 months, and afterwards assist with all routine Crop Care Team activities. Please visit our website (www.intergrowgreenhouses.com) for an application. Once completed, e-mail to info@intergrowgreenhouses.com or fax to 585-682-0195. ␣ Crop Care Team The crop care team sees that the tomato crop is properly trained, pruned, and harvested to assure the best quality and production. Crop care team members use the Priva FS system readers to register all labor and progress. ␣ Key Activities: Top work: String is twisted around main stem of plant to support new growth. Sucker growths, and at times, a leaf is removed from the plant to focus the plant’s energy to the main stem. Flowers are pruned to product specifications. Flower trusses are to be scraped at certain times of the year to promote a stronger stem. Hands and tools are to be disinfected after each plant. If plants are missing or broken, new plants are to be made from neighboring plants to assure proper plant density. All removed plant debris is to be placed under the cultivation gutter. Top work requires operating and working on elevated platforms about 8-10 feet off the ground. Top-work requires standing all day. ␣ Leafing: Three leaves are removed from each tomato vine using a special deleafing knife. All cuts are to be clean and flush with the stem, not leaving any stumps or rough wounds. De-leafing knife is to be disinfected after each plant. Any bottom sucker growth is to be removed. If plants are down or strings are cut, plants must be lifted back up to crop support wire. All crop debris is to be placed under the cultivation gutter. Any observed errors in the irrigation system are to be fixed or reported to direct supervisor. Any stems that are empty or dead are to be cut at string and base of stem and then placed below the cultivation gutter. Leafing requires operating and working of moving platform about 3 foot elevated. Leafing requires standing all day. Cut resistant gloves are required while leafing.
␣Lowering: Each crop support hook is turned one turn to level the top height of the plant. The hook is placed back on the crop wire to permit even spacing from plant to plant. When setting the hook back on the crop wire attention must be paid to not damage the plant or fruit. Plants are to be stretched to assure that vines do not touch floor. Lowering requires working on an elevated platform about 8 feet off the ground. Lowering requires standing all day. Harvest: Ripe tomatoes are removed from the vine. The ends of the stem of the harvested tomatoes are snipped and placed into a harvest container neatly and organized, without damaging the fruit. Harvest carts are operated up and down the row as ripe product is removed from the vine. Once all harvest containers on the cart are filled, the cart is sent to the pack house and another cart is started. Any waste tomatoes on the floor are to be picked up and placed in waste containers under the harvest cart. Damaged or rotten fruit still on the vine are to be removed and placed in the waste bin. Proper precautions are to be taken not to damage vines during harvest. Harvest requires walking on uneven ground through the day, as well as occasionally standing on the rail pipe system. ␣ All Crop Care Workers are required to: • Follow proper safety procedures • Enter labor registrations properly in Priva FS system • Be able to work in an environment with bumblebees • Ability to perform work in an environment with high temperatures, potentially exceeding 95 – 100 degrees F • Report any issues that may affect plants, people, or structure. (ie. Insect/ disease pressure observed, structural issues, safety issues, etc.) • Meet all quality standards as coached by supervisors • Maintain a clean and organized work area • Meet all Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) requirements.
