MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Maintaining a satisfactory level of disinfectant will help prevent the multiplication of bacteria and algae in the pool. Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed.

He gets so excited in the car when he realizes we are on the road to doggie daycare - he is so happy to play with his friends - both the dog and human varieties! complex has a problem with its residents feeling they can walk their dogs around the neighborhood & let their pooches do their business without having to pick it up. This complex did install 1 dog waste disposal site on its East side, but that side is all sidewalks & roadway. It's the side where there is mowed grass that should have at least 2 additional dog waste disposal sites situated,1 on the North side & 1 more on the West side, just outside staff parking area. This is the area where the dog owners are walking their dogs. These dog waste sites ought to also have a supply of bags available for your residents to use. 2 additional sites would be a small price to pay, to show

I would like to thank the staff at Highland Hospital for taking care of my husband during his time in need. Special thanks to those in the ICU and on the 7th floor. Doctors, nurses, social workers, the entire staff were all very professional, caring and informative, and thanks to all of you he is doing so much better! Thank you to the Johnsons for fixing my porch! I didn't know who else to call and you came right down! Thank you so much! Don't know what I'd do without you! I am so blessed to have such good friends! Thank You!
Thank you to the nice couple behind me at Wegmans who paid the difference in my bill.

respect for our beautiful lake district & our summer visitors. Who determined marriage for a female should be synonymous with the loss of her identity (June 8)? If my future husband insists on sharing the same name, it's his choice to change to Mr. Jane Doe just as it's my choice to keep mine. I'm also disturbed by archaic, sexist terms such as (man and wife). It implies ownership on the part of the husband. As a culture, we've become cognizant of disparaging terminology which only serves to divide the races. Let's use the same political correctness in the words we use to equalize not divide the sexes.

Webster Museum’s Baseball Exhibit a Hit By: Amanda Dudek
Another fascinating piece of Webster baseball history is the formation of a women’s baseball team, the All-Wrights, which came together in 1899. Ansel Wright managed this team of women led by his daughter, Team Captain Edith Ann Wright. These women were ahead of their time, pioneering women’s baseball nearly 50 years before professional baseball teams. During World War II, professional baseball teams began creating women’s teams due to the absence of men. A popular 1992 movie,␣A League of their Own, starring such greats as Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty and Madonna, is based on the story of the famous women baseball pioneers of World War II. The book,␣Bloomer Girls: Women Baseball Pioneers␣by Debra A. Shattuck also celebrates women’s contributions to the sport, something which is perhaps underrepresented in baseball history.

The Webster Museum, with its iconic wheel out front, commemorates 140 years of baseball in Webster, New York, with a new display. The Webster Museum has been a resource for local history since 1984. It introduces today’s generations to a rich and diverse village history dating back to Webster’s establishment in 1840 as well as to an area history as old as wooly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. Some of Webster’s earliest recorded baseball memories date back to 1878 when a group of Webster schoolboys decided to form a team. Their as yet untried crew was challenged by an experienced Ontario, New York team led by Dr. S. J. Brandt. At first, the Ontario players balked at playing the new, young team, but when the Webster team returned the challenging invitation, they agreed to play. The recorded incident reads, “He [Dr. Brandt] was told to trot out his team, and we would show him whether we could play ball. After some delay, we retired to the grounds for action.” Even from the beginning the confident baseball players of Webster did not back down from a challenge. Their courage and skill paid off when Dr. Brandt’s team quit at the end of six innings, the score being 40-6 in favor of Webster.

The 140 Years of Webster Baseball exhibit also displays several photos and pieces of antique baseball equipment as well as a plaque commemorating Webster Central School’s 36 wins and 0 losses from 1950-1952. However, baseball items aren’t the only items of interest at the Webster Museum. The museum also houses an 8,000-10,000-year-old Mammoth molar found on State Road in Webster as well as 5,000-7,000 year-old Stone Age mortar found on a Bay Road farm also in Webster. Other displays celebrate former well-known Webster industries. For example, Webster once had a thriving basket weaving industry as well as a flourishing fruit growing industry, particularly for the purposes of dehydrating apples. An early Xerox Copier, functioning typewriters, shelves of books and binders containing a genealogical documents collection, old local maps and a one-room school house are just some of the additional features offered by this museum, which contains so many artifacts it must rotate its contents to ensure everything is ultimately displayed. The Webster Museum is exactly that: a museum of all things Webster, New York. Anyone who lives in the village or who can trace their family history to Webster can be proud of its rich cultural heritage and reputation for producing audacious pioneers. Once home to the world’s largest Grange and still home to beautiful and unique cobblestone houses, Webster’s intriguing history is continually celebrated within these museum walls.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs some of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

CROSSWORD
Should You Switch to Alkaline Water? --DEAR DR. ROACH: With everyone drinking a lot of water during the summer, I noticed that the water depot where I fill up my gallon jugs supplies water in different ranges of alkalinity, from 8-10. This seems to be a new venture for the depot. The owner sells the alkaline water from inside the store and claims the benefit of this water is to neutralize the acidity of the many products we eat daily. He suggests that one might start by taking water with a pH of 8 or stronger, then dilute it to one’s requirements. The purified water involves reverse osmosis so the company reintroduces calcium, magnesium and potassium to bring it up in value. Do you have any comments on alkaline water being consumed during this hot summer season? -- B.A. ANSWER: I recently have seen much confusion about acid and alkaline consumption. By adding a base to water, you raise the pH, making it more alkaline. You can do this at home simply by adding a bit of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to your water -you don’t need to buy alkaline water. Calcium carbonate is a common antacid. Calcium, magnesium and potassium are all elements we need, so in that respect, the alkaline water you are talking about is better than the sodium you would add to water with baking soda. However, the important point is that under normal circumstances your body does not need any help in maintaining pH or in neutralizing acid. The body’s systems are able to maintain pH under almost any dietary condition. Alkaline water is not necessary for health. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old, physically and mentally in good health. Fourteen years ago, I had a triple bypass, which was very successful. Since then I have had trouble with my blood pressure. The low always runs between 50 and 70, which is fine, but the high side is between 150 and 190, which is not good. My doctor has me on amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide. Is there any way to lower the high pressure without also lowering the low side? My doctor does not want to increase the dosages because it would keep me tired all the time. -- J.B. ANSWER: High systolic blood pressures in the elderly often are due to very stiff blood vessels. Since you have coronary artery disease, I think it’s likely that you have calcium in your large arteries, which make them unyielding to the degree that the rush of blood from the heart drives the pressure up very high. It may be impossible to lower the pressure without causing symptoms, so I understand your doctor’s concerns and position. When I think about treating blood pressure, I think more about trying to prevent bad outcomes (like stroke and heart attack) than just treating a number. There is good evidence that ACE inhibitors, like ramipril, reduce heart attack risk in people with known risk factors, so I might try a very low dose to see if it helps the blood pressure without making you feel fatigued or lightheaded. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your Light the way for safer nighttime driving Routine vehicle maintenance protects drivers on the road while also protecting the often considerable financial investment they make in their cars and trucks. Maintenance guidelines have changed thanks to technology, but drivers must continue to care for their vehicles to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers and fellow motorists. From the time they first get behind the wheel, many drivers recognize the need to periodically change their oil and have their tires rotated. But few drivers may understand the importance of maintaining their vehicles’ headlights, and just how compromised they and their passengers might be when driving with old, dimming or foggy headlamps. Burned out lights greatly diminish driver visibility and may even draw the attention of law enforcement. But headlight bulbs don’t just burn out overnight. As bulbs age, their light output gradually reduces due to use and factors such as humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers concerned about the efficacy of their headlight bulbs can take steps to improve their visibility when driving at night. • Accept your own vulnerability. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision. As a result, drivers’ visual acuity may be reduced by as much as 70 percent when driving at night. Cloudy, dim headlights only exacerbate that problem, further compromising the safety of everyone on the road. Avoid aggressive driving and always obey the speed limits, even when it’s late at night and roads are empty. • Learn to recognize headlamp clouding. According to the automotive lighting innovator Lumileds, sunlight, ozone, road pollution, and even chemicals used in car washes can contribute to headlamp clouding. Clouded headlamps often appear hazed and yellow and reduce headlight output considerably. Routine headlamp inspection can help drivers discover clouded lamps that can greatly compromise nighttime visibility. • Restore clouded headlamps. Clouded headlamps do not necessarily need to be replaced. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit can help drivers restore their clouded headlamp lenses. The kit employs a protective UV coating that effectively restores yellow, hazy lenses that

have been compromised by years of exposure to the elements. • Replace headlamps that are past their prime. While not all clouded headlamps need to be replaced, some aging or outdated bulbs are best replaced with new models designed to produce substantially more light output. Drivers whose vehicles are equipped with standard halogen headlights may be surprised to learn that such lights typically begin to break down within two to three years of installation, during which time light output might be reduced by as much as 30 percent. Compared to standard halogen bulbs, Philips X-tremeVision Bulbs can put substantially more light on the road while producing longer beam patterns that make it easier for drivers to see more of what’s ahead of them at night. Drivers’ visibility is dramatically reduced once the sun goes down, but maintaining headlamps can help drivers combat that loss of vision. More information about headlamp maintenance and the alternatives to traditional halogen headlights is available at www.philips.com/automotive.

H O R O SC O P E ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With your Arian charm quotient at an almost all-time high this week, plus all the facts to back you up, you just might win over the last doubters to your proposal. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be in line for that job change you applied for. But be advised that you could be called on to defend your qualifications against supporters of other applicants. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Creating a new approach to an old idea is one way to get beyond that workplace impasse. No such problems in your personal life, where things continue to flow smoothly. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Be more forthcoming about your feelings concerning a proposed change either in your workplace or in your personal life. Your opinions are valuable. Don’t keep them hidden. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A changing situation in your life needs more patience than you appear to be willing to offer. Allowing it to develop at its own pace is the wisest course you can take at this time. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With more stability in your life -- on both personal and professional levels - this could be a good time to strengthen relationships with both friends and colleagues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) People have always relied on your integrity not only to get the job done, but to get it done right. So don’t be pressured by anyone into cutting corners to save time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While others might get rattled over unexpected changes, your ability to adapt calmly and competently helps you make a positive impression during a crucial period. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A changing environment might be daunting for some, but the adventurous Sagittarian takes it all in stride. A friend from the past could awaken some meaningful memories. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) With your self-assurance rising to full strength, the bold Goat should feel confident about opening up to new ventures as well as new relationships. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Reaching out to someone who has been unkind to you might not be easy. But in the long run it will prove to have been the right thing to do. A friend offers moral support. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your keen insight once again helps you work through a seemingly insoluble problem in your workplace. The weekend offers a good chance to develop new relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a knack for finding details that others would overlook. You would make a fine research scientist. HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.
