Penny Saver Pet of the Week Missy is a husky lab mix & would love to tell you about it! She was a rescue after a hurricane in Mississippi– So we named her Mississippi, Missy for short. She may be older but you could never tell, she still acts just like a puppy. When you pull into the driveway Missy will come running to you with a paw in the air waving hi! Some of her favorite things are her family, being outside, hiding bones in the dirt, getting loved & digging a hole in the garden and sitting in it. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Voted #1 - Fraser Fir - Fraser fir is a native southern fir and very similar to Balsam fir. Some say it is a southern extension of the Balsam fir species and naturally grows at elevations above 5,000 feet. This fir has dark green needles, 1/2 to 1 inch long and ships well. The tree has excellent needle retention along with a nice scent. Fraser fir was named for Scot botanist John Fraser who explored the southern Appalachians in the late 1700’s.

DECEMBER 2018 “Palm of the Hand Writing Workshop & a Poetry Reading December 11” Author and poet, Michael Czarnecki will be at the Library on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 to present two special programs. First, at 2 p.m. on December 11, there will be a writing workshop for anyone who has a desire to write about their life. As Mr. Czarnecki states, “Wanting to write and doing so are two different things. The immensity of such a project can overwhelm us.” This workshop will help writers focus while inspiring them to create their stories to share with others. Please call the Library to register at 585-335-6720 so Michael will know to expect you. Then, at 6:30 p.m., we will start with an “open mic” poetry reading opportunity. Bring your own creations or your poetry favorites, to read to participants. Following the “open mic,” Michael will read to us from his own poetry. Michael has made his living through the creative word for nearly a quarter of a century. He has published 16 chapbooks and books of poetry, and he has given hundreds of readings throughout the country. These events are co-sponsored by the Library’s first grant awarded from Poets & Writers, Inc. through public funds received from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. “Santa & Mrs. Claus” ‘Tis the season for frequent appearances of the Jolly Old Elf in our community! We invite you to bring your children and grandchildren to see Santa & Mrs. Claus during their annual visit to the Dansville Public Library on Saturday, December 15th from 10 a.m. to noon. Great gifts for beloved seniors By the time they reach senior status, many adults have amassed a ton of stuff along with their irreplaceable knowledge. Come their golden years, grandparents and other aging loved ones probably don’t need much in the way of material possessions, which can make it challenging to find them holiday gifts. Finding great gifts for seniors may take a little more effort, but with these ideas at the ready, it’s likely gift-givers can make this holiday merry for everyone on their shopping lists. Family photo memories Many seniors love to talk about their life histories. What better way to be the catalyst for conversation than to create a photo album that chronicles their lives? Photos can be included alongside historical documents, such as old school projects, military discharge papers, awards, and even genealogical information. Photo puzzles, photo calendars and any home decor with a photo printed on it are variations on this theme. Assistance gifts Seniors want to remain as independent as possible. By giving items that help them do just that, you can bring smiles to their faces. One idea is motion-sensing light switches and fixtures. If and when nature calls in the middle of the night, hallways or bathrooms can be illuminated effortlessly. Shower and bathroom grab bars are another idea. These provide extra security and stability when getting in and out of the shower or when using the toilet. For seniors who just need a little extra reach, a grab tool can easily snag packages from a top shelf or pick up items that may have dropped to the floor, eliminating bending or straining. Practical technology Seniors may not be as immersed in technology as young people, but they purchase their share of gadgets and increasingly rely on tech to
get through the day. To free up more time for rest and relaxation,
Did You Know? According to Age in Place, nearly 60 percent of available senior income is being spent on housing and healthcare, and those expenditures do not include transportation or food. The rising costs of many necessities can make it difficult for seniors to make ends meet and, as a result, certain money-saving measures are often necessary.

invest in an iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum. This simple device will clean floors easily, moving from room to room without the need for a bulky canister or upright vacuum. Consider an easy-to-use tablet, preloaded with handy applications. Grandparents can use video chatting to keep in touch with grandchildren living across the country. Easily refill prescription medication with a pharmacy app just a click away. Stream favorite movies or channels through video streaming sites, like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Tablets tend to be lightweight, portable and user-friendly. Personal care
Even independent seniors may benefit from a little extra companionship and assistance when family members are not able to make frequent visits. Hiring a visiting care worker, who can do everything from organizing pills to making dinner to tackling some laundry, can provide the help seniors need with their daily errands. Seniors are a thriving and growing demographic. It may seem challenging to purchase gifts for older loved ones, but with a little know-how, it’s easy to find the right present.

TOP TIPS FOR BUYING SAFE TOYS by Joan Lawrence (NAPSI)—For happier holidays with your family, here are answers to parents’ most frequently asked questions about toy safety: Q. How do I pick out safe toys? A. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. Always follow the age grading on toy packaging and be sure to keep toys labeled 3+ away from children under 3. These toys may contain small parts, which are a choking hazard. Q. Are certain toy brands safer than others? A. All toys sold in the U.S. must comply with strict federal safety standards. So when you shop at a reputable retailer, you can feel confident that the toys sold in the establishment are safe. Q. Is it safe to buy a toy from a seller I’m not familiar with? A. Whether online or in person, shop only at retailers you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about the toys on their shelves and websites. Exercise caution when buying toys at flea markets, garage sales and unknown online sellers, as these vendors may not be monitoring for recalled products. Q. How do I find out if a toy has been recalled? A. Only 0.003 percent of the 3 billion toys sold each year are recalled. Stay informed by visiting PlaySafe.org for a current list of recalled products. Q. What’s your last piece of advice for parents? A. Always supervise your children at play and demonstrate the correct way to use a toy or game. For more tips on toy safety, visit www.PlaySafe.org, now available in English and Spanish. • Ms. Lawrence, the “Toy Safety Mom,” is a lifelong child safety advocate with more than 20 years of experience in the toy industry and senior vice president of standards and regulatory affairs at The Toy Association.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com.

Steuben County Legislator’s Report District #4 Wayland & Cohocton, New York As the holiday season is fast approaching, I would like to update you on what has happened in County government in 2018. New York State has again imposed more mandates on County government which affect your County tax bill. First, the State has passed legislation to raise the age of youth that can be incarcerated in regular jail facilities As of 10-01-2018 no youth sixteen years of age can be housed in the County jail, and in 2019, seventeen year old youth will be added to this program. This means the County will have to find other housing facilities to hold these 16 & 17 year-old youthful offenders. I am afraid this will be very costly. Second, a public defender will have to be at every arraignment in the County. We have over 40 courts in the County, which means additional attorneys will have to be hired by the public defenders’ office to provide that mandate by NYS. Although these mandates have increased the County appropriations in the 2019 budget by about 1.9 million dollars, your County tax rate in Wayland and Cohocton shall decrease. This has been achieved by increased revenue from interest income on your County investments, and as more spending occurred in Steuben County in 2018, sales tax revenues have also increased. I would like to point out that this is the third straight year that your County tax rate is being decreased. With continued smart financial management, I believe we can grow revenues to offset future expense increases. To add to Steuben County problems, now the State Unified Court System has mandated that the County provide more court space. Although we had no plans to utilize the third floor of the new county building, with this mandate, we will be moving the Legislative and County Manager’s offices to this new space. The County office building then will be renovated to provide for the additional court space. It is estimated that the cost to do this will be about 6 million dollars. As with the new annex office building, the new renovations will not be an additional cost to the taxpayer. It will be paid for out of surplus funds. In 2018, County Rte 38 in Cohocton was recycled and black-topped with wider shoulders to take care of the large farm equipment. In Wayland, County Rte 91 was to be chips sealed, but I felt that with some minor repairs it could be left until 2019 when it will be recycled and black-topped, making it a much more level road. If anyone has questions or problems that I can help with, please call my office at 585-728-2270. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Respectfully Submitted, John V. Malter

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEPRESSION There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.
R•E•S•P•I•T•E “Respite: Care for Caregivers” Respite – the chance to take a breather, the opportunity to reenergize – is as important as any other item on your caregiver’s to-do list. People think of respite as a luxury, but considering caregivers’ increased risk for health issues from chronic stress, those risks are a lot costlier than some time away to recharge. Respite is the key to your own well-being. Respite protects your own health, strengthens family relationships, prevents burn-out and allows your loved one to stay at home up to three times longer. No wonder respite is one of the most frequently requested support services for family caregivers. Respite can be provided in-home or away from home. There are several options for respite care in Livingston County, including in-home care, adult day programs and social programs. Social day programs for those with memory loss are located in: Mt. Morris, Geneseo and Dansville. Out of home respite care provides caregivers and care recipients with a much different experience than in-home respite. It allows care recipients to interact socially and engage physically. For more information about respite options, contact the Caregiver Resource Center at Noyes: 335-4358 or caregiver@noyeshealth.org.

--DEAR DR. ROACH: What effect, if any, does alcohol consumption have on swelling in the legs, ankles and feet? I drink only when I go out for dinner or have guests, typically a cocktail and a glass of wine; no swelling in those instances. However, I noticed that after a few days on vacation, when I drank more than two glasses of wine every night, my lower legs, ankles and feet began to swell. Once I returned home and resumed no daily alcohol consumption, the swelling abated. So, is there a connection? -- B.A. ANSWER: The physiology of alcohol is complex, with potentially adverse effects on the heart, the liver and on secretion of anti-diuretic hormone. All of these can affect swelling. However, it is entirely possible, and probably more likely, that it is a combination of travel and increased sodium intake that is responsible for your most recent swelling. Even in healthy young volunteers, alcohol immediately reduces the ability of the heart to squeeze out blood. Usually the heart returns to normal after the alcohol is metabolized, but in some people, the heart dilates over time, resulting in heart failure (swelling in the feet has many causes, but heart failure is one of the biggest concerns). In the liver, longstanding alcohol use affects the liver’s ability to synthesize proteins. Reduced levels of the blood protein albumin also might cause leg swelling. Both heart and liver effects are very mild except in people who already have disease of these organs. The role of vasopressin, also called anti-diuretic hormone, is complex. Initial inhibition of ADH leads to an increase in urine production, then an increased level of the hormone, which can lead to water and salt retention and swelling. Even though there are at least three ways alcohol can lead to or worsen edema, it is likely that it’s simply swelling from sitting and standing too much, which commonly occurs in travel, combined with a greater sodium intake from eating out at restaurants. Sodium content at many restaurants is much higher than if you prepare your own food. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been dealing with a problem for a very long time. I’d like to have someone tell me how to stop my eyes from tearing and my nose from running every time I go out in the cold weather. I’ve been given pills (Claritin and Benadryl) and sprays (Nasacort, Beconase), and although they help me breathe better, I still fill up with tears and mucus. I’d like to know if you’ve ever run across these symptoms. -- S.R.M. ANSWER: These symptoms are not only common, they are nearly universal. One of the body’s protections against cold weather is to increase fluid flow to the eyes and nose, as the cold, dry air evaporates their protective moisture. Almost everybody has had the experience of a runny nose after being out in the cold, especially when first coming into a warm room. In some people, the normal response is so strong that it becomes very annoying. It’s a type of nonallergic vasomotor rhinitis. I have had frequent success in prescribing nasal antihistamines, such as azelastine, or an anticholinergic drug like ipratropium, if the treatments you have tried haven’t worked. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Careful, Lamb. Don’t let your generous nature lead to some serious overspending as you contemplate your holiday gift-giving. Your social life kicks off into high gear by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A positive attitude helps you weather annoying but unavoidable changes in holiday plans. Aspects favor new friendships and reinforcement of existing relationships. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Demands on your energy level could be much higher than usual as you prepare for the upcoming holidays. Be sure to pace yourself. Friends and family will be happy to help. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Don’t allow a suddenly icy reaction from a friend or family member to continue without learning what caused it -- and what can be done to restore that once warm and caring relationship. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A relationship seems to be unraveling, mostly from a lack of attention. It might be a good idea to ease up on whatever else you’re doing so you can spend more time working to mend it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) New facts emerge that not only help explain the recent rift with a trusted colleague, but also might provide a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start in your friendship. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s personal situation is, fortunately, resolved in time for you to get back into your hectic round of holiday preparations. An old friend might bring a new friend into your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Pace yourself in meeting holiday pressures and workplace demands to avoid winding up with a frayed temper and a Scorpian stinger that lashes out at puzzled kith, kin and colleagues. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A financial matter requires close attention. Also, news from a trusted source provides the means to help sort out a long-standing state of confusion and put it into perspective. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to reinforce family ties. Make it a priority to assess and resolve all outstanding problems. Start the upcoming holiday season with a full measure of love. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Don’t be pressured into a so-called solid-gold investment. Wait until the holiday distractions are over. Then take a harder look at it. You might find that the “gold” is starting to flake off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A former friend might be trying to heal the breach between you by using a mutual friend as an intermediary. Best advice: Keep an open mind despite any lingering bad feelings. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of saying the right thing at the right time. Your friendships are deep and lasting. LIVINGSTON COUNTY CAREGIVER RETREAT
NOTE OF THANKS We would like to thank the following for their contributions to the 9th Annual Caregiver Retreat held November 17th at Celebrate Family Church in Leicester during National Caregiver Awareness Month. Attendees listened attentively to keynote speaker, Dr. David Davis, former caregiver to his wife and co-author of the book, Support the Caregiver: 9 Strategies for turning the stress of Alzheimer’s caregiving into transformational growth. Dr. Davis spoke from his experience with a strong passion to inspire caregivers to maintain a healthy lifestyle, implement strategies for self-care, encourage a shift in thinking to live life with positivity, and empowerment to move forward with growth and healing. Special thanks to the Geneseo & York/Leicester Kiwanis who contributed many donations, prepared lunch, and coordinated set-up for the event. Many hands made this a memorable day for area caregivers and seniors. This event would not have been possible without support from these local orgnizations and donors: • Alzheimer’s Association Rochester and Finger Lakes Chapter • Abbey of the Genesee • Barilla • Celebrate Family Church • Geneseo & York/Leicester Kiwanis • Lifespan Finger Lakes Caregiver Institute • Livingston County Office for the Aging/NY Connects • Lori McEvoy and the Rochester Mental Health Association • Mama Cindy Strasburg • Quality Inn, Geneseo • Rochester Regional Health • St. Luke the Evangelist Church • UR Medicine|Noyes Health • Local vendors who donated door prizes and our many volunteers!

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Pearl Harbor Remembered with Luncheon & Entertainment By Amanda Dudek

On December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy and Air Force attacked American forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This attack marked the entry of the United States into WWII and is the date that officially became Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day nearly 53 years later in 1994. The Wayland American Legion, Post 402 and its Commander, Kevin Mark, believe deeply that it is important to honor the veterans who served in WWII as well as all United States veterans, active-duty military members and reservists all year long and especially on days like Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Therefore, to remember our fallen soldiers and honor our living ones, the Wayland American Legion, Post 402, is hosting its 4th annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon & Dance on Sunday, December 9th with doors opening at 1:00pm and music from 2:00-5:00pm. This event is free of charge for veterans and current military members and reservists and just $7 for non-military guests. “We’re doing this for the veterans, the troops and the community, not as a fundraiser,” Commander Mark explains. During the luncheon, guests will be served a full meal, including appetizers, lunches and desserts. No one should leave hungry! A cash bar will also be available for those guests who are so inclined. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Southern Tier All Star Jazz Band from 2:00-5:00pm. The band will feature Big Band Music and songs from the 30s, 40s and 50s, including old Army songs and some pieces that are quite moving. “People from all different age groups enjoy
our event,” says Commander Kevin Mark. “Young people and couples enjoy it, and several of them also like to bring their parents and grandparents to hear songs from their youth.” Commander Mark said he believes it can be difficult for older generations to find places to go where they can hear their music these days and this event provides a great opportunity to gather together and do just that. This vintage USO-style entertainment wouldn’t be complete without its special guests all the way from New York City: The American Bombshells Dancing Girls. “The girls dress up in the old-style military outfits and like for the USO,” says Commander Mark. There will also be a Christmas tree and gift packages for the package drive sent out for troop support, giving the event a bit of a “Christmassy” tone. Visitors will be encouraged to remember our veterans and troops this holiday season. In the spirit of the holidays, there will be some caroling, just a few songs to kick off the season. “It’s been a great success in the past,” Commander Kevin Mark assures. “After each event, we hear people say, ‘I wish I’d have been there.’ Don’t wish; be there!”

Your store makes me upset. I am told I need to use an app to find things, and I'm challenged when it comes to my smart phone. I'm an older lady, that has certain challenges anyhow. You think good customer service is out of style, and I must use an app to find things. What happened to your employees taking time to help me and others for that matter? Is being nice and helping people find things out of style at your store, so you just throw me under the bus because I'm unable to use the technology? I'm tired of asking your employees where things are just to be thrown a blank stare and told, "I don't know" while making no move to help me. Is

The right-to-farm does not give farmers the right to pollute the soil, water or air. I realize we depend on farmers for our food but they must live on the land, drink the water and breath the air too! And many people who live in the country have been there a long time. (There's one local farm that boasts about being in business since the early 1800s; how many cows did they have then?!) Whoever stole the A-Frame sign advertising the Dec. 8th (local town) Scouts Craft Show on the
corner of (local roads) Gas Station this past weekend, you should be ashamed of yourself. The sign cost the scouts over $70 to make. This event is a fundraiser for the Scouts and the proceeds go directly to individual scouts to help pay for summer camp as well as other Scouting expenses. You stole from every (local town) Boy Scout and the volunteers who help provide the Scouting program for them. It is hard for me to imagine what your motivation would be for trying to hurt a young man's chance at attending summer Scout camp-Have a change of heart and return the sign no questions asked. On behalf of the (local town) Boy Scout Troop, I wish you a Merry Christmas.

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association notes that, between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.

FESTIVE IDEAS FOR YOUR FALL CELEBRATIONS (NAPSI)—Cooler weather and autumn flavors, such as crisp hard cider, go hand in hand. The fall brings several reasons for celebrations; here are a few ideas to bring out the warmth of the season: 1. Embrace chill moments. When gathering your friends around a fire pit or sitting alfresco on a cool night, be sure to take out a few blankets for guests to wrap themselves in. 2. Warm them up from the inside out. As for the food, you can have a barbecue, or serve family style from hot pots full of chili or stew. Try dishes that are seasonal or showcase seasonal ingredients, such as an Apple-Stuffed Pork Loin Roast using Angry Orchard hard cider (see recipe below). And don’t forget dessert! With hot apple pie, cider doughnuts and pumpkin treats, you can’t go wrong. 3. Incorporate seasonal decor. Autumn is filled with bountiful harvests. From pumpkins and gourds, apples to squash, flowers aren’t the only items to spruce up your gatherings. Also, try using them together! Using a large pumpkin as a vase for a beautiful flower arrangement is a sure way to impress your guests. 4. Drink to the season. Take to the season with an iconic autumn sip: hard apple cider. Crisp and refreshing, terrific on its own or in a cocktail, Angry Orchard hard cider offers a cider style for everyone! Angry Orchard’s flagship style, Crisp Apple, delivers a bright, crisp apple flavor, and adds the perfect balance of sweetness and bright acidity—a true fall classic. Also available: Angry Orchard’s newest style, Rosé Cider. Made with rare, red-flesh apples from France, each apple adds an irresistibly rosy hue and apple-forward taste with a refreshingly dry finish. Who said rosé was only for the summer months? Both styles are available in 12-oz. bottles and cans. Enjoy Crisp Apple on its own or baked into a delicious recipe, such as an Apple-Stuffed Pork Loin Roast: Apple-Stuffed Pork Loin Roast 2 pounds pork loin 2 Tbsp. butter, unsalted 2 white onions, chopped 2 red, firm apples, chopped 6 leaves sage, chopped 1 cup Angry Orchard Crisp Apple 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard ¼ cup olive oil Kosher salt, as needed Black pepper, as needed Preheat oven to 325°. Lay pork loin on a cutting board and, using a sharp knife, make small cuts, lengthwise, and butterfly; you want to end up with a rectangle of pork approximately 1” thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper and set aside. In a sauté pan over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions, apples and sage, and cook for 3 minutes until just softened; season with salt and pepper. Spread apple/onion mix evenly across pork and gently roll back into a cylinder, tying with kitchen string as needed; place in baking pan. In a small bowl, whisk together cider, mustard and oil until combined; smear all over exterior of pork loin. Place in oven and cook until center reads at 145° with a thermometer; remove and let stand for 10 minutes before carving. Complement these fall flavors with a refreshing hard cider cocktail: Spiced Orchard 4 oz. Angry Orchard Crisp Apple 1 oz. Aged Rum 0.5 oz. Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup 0.5 oz. Lemon Juice 1 dash Angostura Bitters Method: Heat all ingredients on the stove until warm. Pour into a toddy glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick and grated nutmeg. FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.
