Penny Saver Pet of the Week Carlton adopted us when we lived in
Branchport. He would come along with several of his girlfriends in tow each evening at dinnertime. When he finally trusted us enough to come to the vet, he was in rough shape: diabetes, asthma, FIV, and stomatitis. Because of the infection, he had to have all but one of his teeth pulled, and he’s strictly an indoor kitty now. As far as Carlton is concerned, though, he’s a normal, fully toothed cat and is very much in charge of the household. He loves to get spine rubs up and down his back. Despite being normally very polite, Carlton loses all his manners when there’s milk around...we’ve caught him a few times with his entire head in a near-empty glass of milk. We love Carlton, and are grateful everyday that he adopted us. Even with his rather rough start in life, he has turned out to be a wonderful pet.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti.

Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

“There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them....” ~ Clare Boothe Luce
Dale E. Loucks␣ November 3, 2018 Conesus: Dale passed at his home unexpectedly on November 3, 2018 at age 72. Predeceased by his parents John & Maybelle Loucks, brother John “Bud” Loucks, and sister Louise Loucks. Survived by his devoted wife of 52 years Nancy (O’Laughlin) Loucks; sister-in-law Sandra Loucks; niece, Debra ( Jack) Florack; nephews, Charlie (Mary) Loucks and Richard Loucks ( Jennifer Colombo); several great nieces & nephews, many other loving family and friends including members of the Kapell and LaFrance families in the Cranberry Lake area, and many dear friends around the country including those in Arlington, TX (The Manion Family.) Dale loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, boating and golfing. He loved his home in Conesus and his new covered front porch. Dale loved to work on crossword puzzles and did many things in his life. He was a buyer of raw materials for Tandy Brands of Arlington, Texas, and was a buyer for Western World, who had 50 stores, in Arlington, Texas. He was a driver and dispatcher at the Arlington Cancer Center for 12 years. While in Texas he was also a supervisor for the blue parking lot, season ticket holders, at the Texas Rangers Stadium. Dale and Nancy also worked in the parking lot of the stadium for the 1995 All-Star Game. After moving from Texas to Conesus, NY in June 1997 he was an exit greeter at Walmart and then a bus driver for Kemp’s Bus Service. His routes were Holy Cross, Bishop Kearney, and Livonia Central School. Dale retired in 2011 and enjoyed his family and his home in Conesus. Friends may call on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 2-5pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. Dale’s Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 12th, 11am at the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 5687 Big Tree Road, Rte 20A, Lakeville, NY 14480. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Dale’s Memory to the Conesus Fire Department, PO Box 216, Conesus, NY 14435 or the Lakeville United Church of Christ at the address above. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
Children face countless “hopeless” situations. Tying a shoelace, for example, seems totally impossible to the tiny tot who has not yet mastered the art. Adults, who have gone through this stage themselves, will smile and realize that soon the solution will be found and the “hopeless” situation resolved. The frightening situations that we all must face from time to time may seem to be utterly hopeless. If we despair and stop trying, there is no hope. If we persist, hoping for an answer, our problems will prove to be far from hopeless. You can be sure that your wishes will be followed by making arrangements for your funeral service in advance of need. All details will be handled exactly as you specify. Ask our staff about this.

THE IRISH FUNERAL CRY The Irish tradition of ìkeeningî involves women who would gather together to wail in grief at a funeral. Derived from the Irish word “caoineadh” (meaning to cry or lament), keening had an otherworldly sound that was intended to provide an energetic pathway for the deceased to follow. This lament, which created a portal into the spirit world, was partly tuneful and often composed beforehand in order to be sure to make mention of family and ancestors who had gone before and could provide a spirit ladder for the departing soul to climb back home. While keening died out in Ireland after the Famine, it is still practiced in the Middle East, parts of Africa, and East and Southeast Asia. Every family is different, and not everyone wants the same type of funeral. Funeral practices are influenced by religious and cultural traditions, costs and personal preferences. These factors help determine whether the funeral will be elaborate or simple, public or private, religious or secular, and where it will be held. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although your energy level is high, be careful not to commit to too many projects at this time. You’ll do better focusing on just a few tasks rather than spreading yourself too thin. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your heart might be leading you in one direction, but pay attention to your keen Bovine intellect. I’m cautioning you to think things through before making any commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your “serious” Twin has been dominant in your life for quite a while. It’s time now to let that “wilder” half take you out for some good times -- perhaps with someone very special. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career aspects are high for Moon Children who make a good impression. Show people not only what you can already do, but also how you can be more valuable to them in the future. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Things start to brighten for the Lion’s immediate financial future. But be careful to resist the urge to splurge. You need to tuck something away to help you through another tight period. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Having to do too many tasks in too short a time could lower your mood to just above the grumbling level. But if you handle things one at a time, you’ll get through it all soon enough. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your usually carefully made holiday plans could be subject to change later this month. Use this week to prepare for that possibility by starting a Plan B just in case you need it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about joining a colleague’s plan to solve a workplace problem. Investigate it thoroughly. Otherwise, you could find yourself in a predicament with other associates. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Slow down that highpaced whirl you’ve been on. Spending quiet time alone or with people you care for can be both physically and spiritually restorative. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Make suggestions, not demands. You’ll be more successful in getting people to follow your lead if you exercise quiet patience instead of strong persuasion to get your ideas across. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You still need more facts before you can make an informed career choice. One note of caution: Be careful about whom you ask for that information; otherwise, you could be misled. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changing situations through the end of the week could lead to some challenging opportunities for those perspicacious Pisceans who know how to make them work to their advantage. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of being both daring and cautious, traits that could make you a research scientist or maybe even a rocket-ship designer. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Risks, Benefits of HPV Vaccine for Boys --DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts on the pros and cons of HPV vaccine for boys? -- L.P.B. ANSWER: There are risks and benefits to the individual, but also benefits to society. The HPV vaccine should really be considered an anticancer vaccine, since its goal is to reduce infection from the kinds of human papilloma virus strains that can lead to cancer. Cervical cancer is the most common HPV-related cancer, but some throat, anal and genital cancers also are HPV-related. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are about 30,000 HPV-related cancers in the U.S. annually. It is possible but unproven that the HPV vaccine will provide protection against some or all of these. When given to girls or women who have not been infected with HPV, the HPV vaccine is nearly 100 percent effective at preventing persistent infection with the strains most likely to lead to cancer. In males age 16-26 years, the efficacy of the vaccine at preventing high-risk HPV-related warts was about 90 percent. However, the HPV vaccine is relatively new, and it is not clear how long immunity will last. It has been proven to last only eight to nine years, but studies looking at protection up to 15 years are ongoing. It is possible that additional boosters may be necessary. The most serious risk of HPV vaccine is anaphylaxis, a possibly fatal allergic reaction. There have been 36 cases of anaphylaxis reported in the world literature and through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting system, according to the Institute of Medicine’s 2012 report on adverse effects of vaccines. There have been 67 million doses given, with a 0.003 percent rate of all adverse events, 90 percent of which were not considered serious. The most common nonserious adverse events in men were redness and soreness at the injection site, dizziness, headache and fainting. Among the adverse events considered serious, the most common were headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. The societal benefit to vaccinating boys is that they are less likely to spread infection to others. Since essentially all cases of cervical cancer are HPV-related, males are the most common source of infection (although it can be transmitted female to female). By vaccinating your boy, you are reducing his risk of developing HPV infection and might be decreasing his risk of several types of HPVrelated cancer, at a small risk of an adverse event, which is usually minor. However, probably the most compelling reason is to protect your son’s future sexual partners. Put in the starkest terms, you are reducing the risk that your future daughter-in-law will develop cervical cancer.

*** DR. ROACH WRITES: Several people wrote to me about the symptom of burping. One physician recalled several cases where burping, not chest discomfort, was the major sign of a heart blockage. A reader observed belching in a family member who was later diagnosed with stomach cancer, and another noted gastroparesis as the cause. I think these are all unlikely but possible causes to be considered when the cause can’t be found and symptoms persist. Finally, one person wrote in that ginger solved her burping problem. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.
Snow Tires In Stock:
How t o prot ect your car’s resale value Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

Autumn repays the earth the leaves which summer lent it. ~Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742–1799), translated by Norman Alliston, 1908
You’ve heard it before: “I saw this, and it just made me think of you!” Maybe you thought, Am I really the kind of person that makes people think of oversized fuchsia slippers? Don’t blame yourself. You’re yet another victim of one-size-fits-all gifting, but move over, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There’s a new player this season: Plaid Friday. It all started in Oakland, California in 2009 when gallery owner, Kerri Johnson, grew tired of the seasonal shopping focus repeatedly being on the big box stores. Deciding it was time for local business owners to “weave together” and take back holiday shopping, Johnson created the local business event that is sweeping the nation: Plaid Friday. Now, on Plaid Friday, local businesses across the United States are offering specials to customers who shop while wearing plaid as a gesture of solidarity with both these local businesses and their communities. Not only are you practically guaranteed to choose more unique gifts, but shopping Plaid on Friday offers a host of other benefits, as well. Shopping local has a greater positive impact on your local economy. Local businesses pay local taxes. They hire local people. They also tend to source their goods locally. According to the Institute for Local self-reliance’s 2016 article, Amazon’s Stranglehold, compared to Amazon, independent retailers create 2x as many jobs for the same amount of revenue. Similarly, according to the Andersonville Study of Retail Economics, local business generates 70 percent more local economic activity per square foot than big box retail. According to another statistic, money spent at a local business generates 2.5x more wealth for the local economy compared to money spent at a chain-owned business. Local money spent locally stays and grows local communities; it’s that simple. If every family in the United States spent an extra $10 a month at a locally owned, independent business instead of at a national chain, over $9.3 billion would be directly returned to our economy. Shopping local puts you in touch with local expertise. According to the Codex Group in its article, “why Online Book Discovery is Broken (and How to Fix It),” one learns that at a local store, you are as much as 3x more likely to discover something “New.” Independent, local retailers have a great deal more freedom to choose which products they sell, and they typically choose products with
which they have experience and which they trust. Different products at each local retailer mean a greater diversity of products, and more options tends to increase the chances that consumers will be able to find a more exact fit for their needs and wants. Additionally, local businesses are often able to offer more individualized attention and assistance to their customers, making certain they find the best possible options to suit their needs. Shopping local is better for the environment. Shopping local helps reduce the amount of international shipping and transport involved in commerce. Therefore, it also reduces processing, packaging and transportation waste, leading to less pollution because of this shipping and transport. Local businesses tend to use more locally-produced goods and local resources. These local, independent businesses are also much more likely to reuse materials, conserving both resources and energy. Shopping local builds community involvement. When you are out shopping in your community, you have greater chances of meeting and talking with your fellow community members. You are more likely to become involved with your fellow community members and, therefore, in your community, as well. Meanwhile, your locally spent dollars can make the difference between success and failure for several local businesses while helping to maintain community life. Start the Plaid tide in your community this shopping season. Look for your local Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s Directory of Participating Merchants for up-to-date, insider information on your community’s Plaid Friday specials. Shop fun; shop smart; shop local!

For All Your I.T. Needs

Thank you, Victor Merchants Group. We attended the annual Victor Spooktacular event that commenced at the Six50 restaurant on Route 96. We want to thank Matt, the manager, as well as all the organizers, and the participating vendors! It was a fun, adult event that allowed us to get to know the local businesses, most of which we would not have encountered prior to this adventure. We look forward to next year’s route. Continued success to all! November 1st is All Saints Day - With the horrible tragedy that just happened a few days ago, committed by a sick person, I will pray for healing for all and who have had tragedies in their lives.
I think you need to go back and relearn some lessons, mainly some history lessons and some moral lessons as well. Last time I checked, this is a free country. Which means the person you are complaining about has every right to fly their nation's flag as you have every right to fly yours. Attempting to take that away takes away from the fact that we are a FREE country. And on the moral side of things, "Judge not, lest ye be judged," "Love
Additionally, I will pray for healing of America that people with different views will learn to respect others who may not have the same views but realize that even though a person doesn't agree with you, that's okay. Each person is different, but that's what it means to be an American; that is the beauty of this great country: that we are all Americans. America is a great nation, and we should celebrate it and not condemn it. Whether it's good, bad, and ugly, it is still a nation of freedom, but freedom does take responsibility. To RESPECT one another is one of the costs, and to obey American laws is another cost, but worth it. A shout out to Village of LeRoy Police Department for
being present this Halloween. They not only made sure everyone had a safe night but also added to the fun with music, handing out candy and talking with families as they passed. We also were impressed with the teenagers of the community, they were so polite when asking for candy and most of them left the porch with “Thank you so much, have a great night!” Love our small town! Brightened Up the Day! A local farmer planted a field of beautiful sunflowers and then placed a sign that they were free for anyone who wished to pick them. My husband and our oldest son surprised me with a bunch and they really brightened up not only the kitchen, but my day as well! What a beautiful act of kindness,
thy neighbor as thyself" (I am not even Christian and I follow these). And finally, when it comes to immigrants, please take a moment to read what is written on the Statue of Liberty, one of the symbols of our "wonderful" free country.
Bus with tiny trailer. Return it with no questions asked, otherwise I will consider it stolen and file a report with authorities. I have two names, the only ones interested. I asked one and they didn’t say anything. I suggest you come forth and return what isn’t yours or I will file a report. Facebook Marketplace has been notified what took place. I’m giving you a chance to return it with no questions asked. Do the right thing. My husband’s mistake will not be your gain.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE … read the sign and KNOW what time it is! No turn on red between 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm. This DOESN'T include weekends or during the summer when there is NO SCHOOL! On Tuesday, October 2, I sold you the Coca Cola Jukebox. My husband mistakenly sent another item with you. I ask you do the right thing and return it. It is a Humble Hot Dog Coca Cola Town Square
When did traffic signs become simply suggestions? I live on a busy city street where the speed limit is 30 mph, but the average speed is around 45 to 50. Traveling through stop signs and lights has become driving as usual. Right on red after stop has
offering little bits of sunshine for anyone who wanted it. Think how much better the world would be with more acts of kindness like this. Thank you, stranger, for the beautiful sunflowers. Thanks to the two East Bloomfield Fire Policemen who stayed in the rain all Halloween Night safely crossing the kids on Main Street to get to the great party hosted by the Fire Department cider, doughnuts and popcorn for all.
become 'yield' if you're lucky. And do folks have so much to talk about that their phone can't be put down long enough to get where they're going? And being a pedestrian does not mean you can automatically walk into traffic without exercising good sense (sadly lacking in some). And what about the professional drivers we hold to a higher bar?... but I digress. Complaining about silk flowers and dirt piles in the cemetery which is run by VOLUNTEERS: We are doing the best we can with age and disabilities. Makes it hard to feel like volunteering when you are yelled at and threatened. So TRIVIAL when people have lost their entire communities in Florida.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food.
Dansville Moose Club featuring
Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage.
Country With A Kick
FLINT CREEK November 21st 8pm-12am 6 Main St.
The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Pros and cons to early retirement A lifetime of working compels many people to look forward to their retirement. Some people even work to retire early. But what are the advantages of early retirement beyond starting a life of leisure? And are there any detriments to this plan? A 2014 survey by the financial services provider TIAA-CREF found that 37 percent of Americans plan to retire before age 65. However, many of them will not have control over the matter. Those who do may want to consider the pros and cons of early retirement. Advantages Many people seek early retirement so that they can live a life free of the constraints of schedules. In retirement, time becomes, more or less, a retiree’s own. Leaving a job can be a boon to a person’s health as well. Relieving oneself of the pressures and stresses of professional life can free up the mind and body. Stress can affect mental and physical health, taxing the heart and contributing to conditions such as depression or anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headache, muscle and chest pain and contribute to trouble sleeping. The earlier the retirement, the more opportunity to travel before health issues begin to limit mobility. Early retirement also can be a way to volunteer more or even start a new job opportunity — one where workers have greater control over their schedules and careers. Disadvantages One of the disadvantages of early retirement is a loss of income. Contributions to retirement accounts also ceases at retirement. This can lead to financial setbacks if adequate
savings were not allocated for retirement. According to the resource Wealth How, some people who retire early fear outliving their savings. While retiring early may be good for health, it also can have negative consequences. An analysis from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that retirement can lead to declines in mental health and mobility as well as feelings of isolation. Retiring early may jump start these health implications. Another consideration is that health insurance provided by an employer typically ends at retirement. That means having to pay out of pocket until a person ages into government-subsidized healthcare, such as Medicare in the United States, at age 65. Retiring early is a complex issue that requires weighing the pros and cons.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Exercise regularly. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health.

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

REMODELING HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
Maintenance Person Self-starter with basic knowledge of heating, plumbing, electrical, painting. Good working conditions. Apartment complex. Must have dependable transportation. Salary commensurate with experience. Please send resume to: Fiducciarealty@gmail.com
