Backyard Maintenance Tips For Summer (NAPS)—Summer is here and it’s time for backyard barbecues! Before your guests arrive, check these four backyard maintenance tasks off your to-do list to ensure your yard is looking good. Clean Your Barbecue To prevent food from sticking to your barbecue grills, rub cooking oil on the grates before you start. After you’re done barbecuing, use warm, soapy water to clean the grates with a wire brush. Give Outdoor Furniture a Pick-Me-Up With all furniture, check for wear and tear that may have occurred during winter. Clean plastic furniture and chair or couch cushions simply with a cloth or soft scrub brush dipped in a mix of water and dish detergent. Some outdoor cushions can be thrown in the washer so check the tags. Check Power Equipment Since power equipment most likely hasn’t been used in months, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. Some equipment may need to be lubricated to run smoothly again. Easily lubricate the moving parts of a lawn mower with WD-40 EZ-REACHTM. It has an 8-inch, flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape to get WD-40® Multi-Use Product into hard-to-reach places, like in and around the blade. Tidy Up Your Lawn Trim large plants, hedges and bushes that had a growth spurt during the spring, and remove dead limbs from trees. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters around your home, and remove weeds from the lawn and garden. You may need to reseed some areas of your lawn as well. With the completion of these four tasks, guests will be enjoying your backyard barbecues all summer long. To see how WD-40 EZ-REACH can help you tackle other outdoor maintenance projects, visit WD40.com.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Taking some time out of your usually busy social life could be just what you need to help you focus on putting those finishing touches on your plans for a possible career change. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A misunderstanding about a colleague’s suggestions could create a delay in moving on with your proposal. But by week’s end, all the confusing points should finally be cleared up. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel overwhelmed by all the tasks you suddenly have to take care of. But just say the magic word -- help! -and you’ll soon find others rushing to offer much-needed assistance. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Finishing a current project ahead of schedule leaves you free to deal with other upcoming situations, including a possible workplace change, as well as a demanding personal matter. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Turn that fine-tuned feline sensitivity radar up to high to help uncover any facts that could influence a decision you might be preparing to make. Devote the weekend to family activities. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A state of confusion is soon cleared up with explanations from the responsible parties. Don’t waste time chastising anyone. Instead, move forward with your plans. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might feel obligated to help work out a dispute between family members. But this is one of those times when you should step aside and let them work out their problems on their own. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your ability to resolve an on-thejob problem without leaving too many ruffled feathers earns you kudos from co-workers. You also impress major decision-makers at your workplace. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Newly made and longheld friendships merge well, with possibly one exception. Take time to listen to the dissenter’s explanations. You could learn something important. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be prepared to be flexible about your current travel plans. Although you don’t have to take them, at least consider suggestions from the experts in the travel business. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) A problem with a recent financial transaction could lead to more problems later on unless you resolve it immediately. Get all the proof you need to support your position. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Daydreaming makes it difficult to stay focused on what you need to do. But reality sets in by midweek, and you manage to get everything done in time for a relaxing weekend. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ability to reach out to those in need of spiritual comfort makes you a much-revered, much-loved person in your community. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Beach, who served as the Caledonia Fire Department Fire Chief for 3 years from 2012 to 2015, is also very involved in his local farming community. When he’s not working in Greece, he works for Paul Stein & Sons Farm in Caledonia. During the planting and harvest seasons he can usually be found riding around the fields on a tractor or driving truck from the field to the bunk and back. A family man, Beach lives with his wife, Alyssa, 4-year-old son Owen and 2-year-old daughter Kelsie in Caledonia. They are expecting their 3rd child this May. For the Beach family, however, things were about to take an unexpected turn. By December 2018, Chris had been working for two months to figure out the cause of a rash that appeared over a small part of one of his legs. During October and November, he had seen his PCP several times but was unfortunately unable to find any cause for the rash or relief from it. With the rash spreading to cover both legs, he gave in to his wife’s request, and on December 11th, he called to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. The receptionist informed him that new patients must typically book their initial appointment 10 weeks out; however, she just had a cancellation and had an appointment available for 8:30 the next morning. It was his if he could make it. He took it. The dermatologist took a biopsy of the rash and ordered blood work done that same day. On December 13th, just two days later and the day Former Caledonia Fire Chief, Greece after his 33rd birthday, Chris Police Sergeant Chris Beach Beach received a phone call from his doctor as he was preparing to leave home and head into work. His doctor told him his blood work had come back, and something was not right. He needed to get to Strong Hospital’s Emergency Room right away. He did. That night, after more blood work, Beach was diagnosed with Leukemia and was told he would be admitted to the hospital for at least the next 30 days. Later that evening, Beach made his way to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester. On the morning of December 14th, the very next day, Chris Beach had his first bone marrow biopsy completed to determine which type of Leukemia he had and the course of treatment he would need. By 3:00pm, the Beach family received Chris’ diagnosis: he had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). At 7pm, after several tests and with a heart healthy enough to withstand treatment, Chris Beach began his first round of chemotherapy. A heavy hitter, this treatment consists of 7 days of 24-hour IV chemotherapy medication. Once completed, Beach faced 7 days of no chemotherapy followed by a second bone marrow biopsy the results of which determine the effectiveness of the chemotherapy and the next steps in his treatment.

The Caledonia community wasn’t about to let Chris Beach and his family go through this alone. Local businesses around Caledonia put donation jars on their counters for Chris. At the local redemption center, people can return their bottles and request refunds go to
Caledonia Fire Department Supports Chris Beach support Chris and his fight. Friends, family, neighbors and coworkers alike filmed a video of supportive messages for Chris Beach which quickly spread across Facebook, and Caledonia Fire Department and Greece Police Department are working together to plan a fundraiser to take place at the end of January. They are currently selling T-Shirts, sweatshirts and bracelets that say BeachStrong on them, as well. Says family friend and current Caledonia Fire Chief Jeff Ayers, “The amount of phone calls, texts, emails, and Facebook messages that I have received from people asking how they can help is totally incredible! Firefighters and Cops know how strong brotherhood is and how no one fights alone, but to see an entire community-and then some-come together for support is absolutely jaw dropping. I know Chris and his entire family are grateful for all the support and everything else they have received. I couldn’t be prouder to be their [Caledonia’s] Fire Chief and help serve this great community.” On Friday, December 28th, the results from Chris Beach’s 2nd bone marrow biopsy showed that his cancerous cells are gone. The chemotherapy appears to have done its job! Fire Chief Ayers adds, “Chris is a fighter and always gives 110% effort to what he’s doing, and this shows it. He has a goal to be back to work by the end of July, and doctors don’t see any reason to why that shouldn’t happen! Right now, we continue to hope for good news.” With the results from his latest biopsy coming back clean, Chris was able to return home on Saturday night, January 5th. He still must go in for chemotherapy appointments and more scans, but at least he’s able to stay home and hopefully return to a little bit of normalcy. In honor of Chris Beach and to support his fight, a bone marrow registry drive will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd from 5-8pm at Jones Hall in Caledonia. Standing together, the Caledonia community and all who join them in support of Chris Beach will continue to be #BeachStrong.

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT A desire to live a healthy, active life compels many people to include exercise in their daily routines. Numerous studies have shown that regular workouts that include a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise can make bodies less susceptible to injury while reducing a person’s risk for conditions such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Exercising is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine, but that routine can be derailed if men and women are not taking the appropriate measures to avoid injury while working out. While even professional athletes succumb to injury from time to time, there are steps everyone can take to avoid injury when working out.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is There Such a Thing as a Weather Allergy? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I saw a new physician for the first time two years ago. As he had no EKG machine, he sent me over to the local hospital for an EKG (just for his records, I wasn’t having problems). I had the EKG. The tech said that I was in atrial fib and needed to be admitted, as blood clots could form. I disagreed and went home. The doctor called me and persuaded me to go back to the hospital, which I did. I was preparing to be admitted when a cardiologist came in and said: “She doesn’t need admitting; she is not in atrial fib, it’s just PVCs.” I found out later that the EKG machine spit out the interpretation; no cardiologist had read it. I did complain, of course, and received an apology letter from the hospital. They also stated that they would change this procedure. Do hospitals actually rely on machines to do cardiology interpretations? And then go along with the machine’s interpretation without a cardiologist looking at the EKG? Please tell me it isn’t so. -- M.K. ANSWER: It isn’t so, or at least it shouldn’t be. There are several errors here. The first is that the EKG machine made the wrong interpretation. The machines are pretty good most of the time, but there are times when it is very difficult to tell and the machine is wrong. The second error was that the technician told you rather than getting the results confirmed by a human being who could correctly interpret them. I give the technician credit for trying to act in the patient’s interest, but you should be sure of your facts before telling the patient. It’s the third error – that of the doctor who called you – that upsets me the most, since the doctor was also wrong before calling you. I would be especially angry if the doctor had relied on the machine or the technician and hadn’t checked the EKG personally. It is good you wrote to complain: Hospitals rely on feedback to change the system. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

Long-Distance Caregiving (NAPS)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. W h e n providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their long-distance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
