GIVE THE GIFT OF DELICIOUS COFFEE (NAPSI)—Have you ever wondered what to buy a friend for the holidays and wished you could get them something that they would enjoy every day? Everyone has at least one friend who simply cannot live without their coffee. If that friend uses a pod brewing system, they are choosing convenience and speed but sacrificing flavor and value. When they buy coffee pods, they are paying about $40 per pound of coffee. A drip coffee maker brews somewhat better-tasting coffee but people probably waste half the coffee that they brew. That is like doubling what you pay per pound of coffee. Better Taste, Less Waste There are some great inexpensive devices for brewing a wonderful single cup of coffee. Manual brewers, many say, brew the best cup of coffee you can make at home. With these brewers you can use your favorite freshly roasted local coffee, and furthermore, you don’t waste any. You brew only the number of cups you want. With a brewer like the AeroPress coffee maker you can brew a rich, delicious cup of coffee with no bitterness in just a minute or two. The process is simple, clean up is fast and easy, and the grounds including the filter are compostable. Every ounce of coffee you buy ends up in a cup you drink, so none of your money goes down the drain.

Pittsford Food Cupboard Receives Generous Donation.

Submit photos and captions at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown Sports • Celebrations • Vacations • Events

It’s possible to brew café-quality coffee at home without spending hundreds of dollars on a machine or wasting half the coffee you brewed. Give the gift of a manual brewing device to help your friends brew one or two cups at a time using freshly roasted coffee, and they’ll thank you for helping them get the most out of every bag of coffee they buy. DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. There, budding drivers can also learn how to pass the written test the first time.

In this talk we consider a particular class of such skeletons - illegitimacy. This can be difficult research. We will consider first how to tell if a birth actually is illegitimate. Running on a variety of surfaces instead of sticking to just one surface may help runners reduce their risk of injury. Officials with the USA Track and Field’s Sports Medicine and Science Committee recommend that runners vary their runs so they run on pavement, trails and tracks. While it helps to run on various surfaces, researchers do not believe one particular surface is better than another. In fact, while running on asphalt has long been assumed to increase injury risk because of the presumption that harder surfaces produce greater impact forces on the body, a 2008 study from researchers at the Hannover Medical School Department of Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery in Germany found that running on asphalt surfaces decreased mid-portion tendinopathy risk while running on sand surfaces increased that risk tenfold.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Is There Such a Thing as a Weather Allergy? --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible to be allergic to the cold weather and temperature changes? My son is 23 years old, and when he goes out in the cold, he breaks out in hives. What can he do? -- K.R. ANSWER: This sounds exactly like cold urticaria, which isn’t an allergy, but is similar in some ways. Doctors may test this by placing an ice cube (in a plastic bag with water) on the skin (usually the forearm) for five minutes, then watch the skin as it rewarms. If a hive develops (with raised skin and redness), that confirms the diagnosis. Cold urticaria can be associated with some infections (Lyme disease, hepatitis and HIV, among others) and with celiac disease. People with cold urticaria need to worry about systemic reactions. Avoiding cold (especially swimming in cold water) is critical, but even cold beverages can cause a serious systemic reaction, including swelling of the mouth and throat. Even anaphylaxis, a life-threatening collapse of the circulatory system, can develop. Many people with severe cold urticaria carry an epinephrine auto-injector in case of emergency. Antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are the best pharmacologic treatment. Experts in cold urticaria include allergists and dermatologists.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I saw a new physician for the first time two years ago. As he had no EKG machine, he sent me over to the local hospital for an EKG (just for his records, I wasn’t having problems). I had the EKG. The tech said that I was in atrial fib and needed to be admitted, as blood clots could form. I disagreed and went home. The doctor called me and persuaded me to go back to the hospital, which I did. I was preparing to be admitted when a cardiologist came in and said: “She doesn’t need admitting; she is not in atrial fib, it’s just PVCs.” I found out later that the EKG machine spit out the interpretation; no cardiologist had read it. I did complain, of course, and received an apology letter from the hospital. They also stated that they would change this procedure. Do hospitals actually rely on machines to do cardiology interpretations? And then go along with the machine’s interpretation without a cardiologist looking at the EKG? Please tell me it isn’t so. -- M.K. ANSWER: It isn’t so, or at least it shouldn’t be. There are several errors here. The first is that the EKG machine made the wrong interpretation. The machines are pretty good most of the time, but there are times when it is very difficult to tell and the machine is wrong. The second error was that the technician told you rather than getting the results confirmed by a human being who could correctly interpret them. I give the technician credit for trying to act in the patient’s interest, but you should be sure of your facts before telling the patient. It’s the third error – that of the doctor who called you – that upsets me the most, since the doctor was also wrong before calling you. I would be especially angry if the doctor had relied on the machine or the technician and hadn’t checked the EKG personally. It is good you wrote to complain: Hospitals rely on feedback to change the system. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

Long-Distance Caregiving (NAPS)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. W h e n providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their long-distance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Pirate Toy Fund: Toys Year-Round for Children in Need By Amanda Dudek any people, especially those from the Greater Rochester Area, are sure to recognize Gary the Happy Pirate, aka Gary Smith, a local children’s entertainer of Nickelodeon fame. Gary founded his Pirate Toy Fund in 1995, and the fund has provided nearly 250,000 toys to area children in need since then. The Pirate Toy Fund, or PTF, supplies toys year-round to over 70 agencies that provide aid and comfort to thousands of children in the Greater Rochester region. Gary explains that the Pirate Toy Fund is unique among nonprofits in that it provides toys for children in need, utilizing existing agencies, year-round. Gary Smith was inspired to establish this unique endeavor by a special friend, a child named Christie Simonetti. Years ago, Gary went up to Strong Hospital to sing to the sick children. He met Christie who was being treated for leukemia and he was moved by the way in which she was generously giving away toys that had been given to her by visiting family and friends. When he discovered that the Eddie Meath Toy Fund was going to come to an end, Gary knew he had to step in and establish something similar, following Christie’s lead. He wanted every sick child in a Rochester hospital to receive a toy. Sadly, Christie passed away shortly thereafter, yet, the eight-year-old had inspired Gary’s Pirate Toy Fund which would touch the lives of hundreds, even thousands, of children in need. Besides hospitals, the PTF works through other agencies to provide toys to children dealing with a variety of circumstances. Agencies must first file an application to join the PTF network, which helps the PTF not to duplicate services. The Pirate Toy Fund, a nonprofit itself, provides toys to its program partners: area nonprofits, hospitals, schools, and other organizations who serve children in need. These agencies submit requests, and the PTF fills the orders for pick-up.

In addition to these agencies, the PTF has two special programs: Toys on Patrol and TIC-TOC. Launched in 2011, Toys on Patrol aids law enforcement officers in comforting children involved in difficult or traumatic situations. Rochester Police Department Officer Cody Goodfriend confirms, “This one gesture can make all the difference. It lets children know that we’re not the bad guys. We’re here to help.” The program receives a great deal of support from both volunteers and community partners, equipping patrol cars and officers with bags of toys and books to carry with them. Toys on Patrol has been a great success with over 7,000 toys distributed to date, and it now has its eye on expanding throughout Western New York.

Stories What’s Your Story?

Meeting the needs of another unique group of children is TICTOC, the PTF’s latest project. Toys Inspiring Children To Overcome Challenges, or TIC-TOC, provides toys to children with various developmental challenges. Thanks to monetary donations, the PTF is able to buy these specially- designed adaptive toys. They are often very expensive because they are modified to help children with disabilities use them. The modifying switches for these toys can cost as much as $80 apiece. These toys are much more difficult to find than those typically sold at major retail outlets. While children often have access to some of these toys at school, many of them do not have many, if any, of these supportive, educational toys at home. Providing these children with toys of their own which aid in the development of their cognitive and motor skills also assists their parents and caregivers by providing another means of nurturing skill development at home. The PTF finds support from many avenues, including business partners, third-party toy drives and many wonderful volunteers who tirelessly give of themselves and of their time for these children. The PTF also holds fundraisers such as its chef competition entitled, “Taste of Legacy,” the Christie Simonetti Classic Golf Tournament, the 13WHAM Toy Drive and others. Other children are encouraged to get involved, as well. The PTF’s “Change” A Life Campaign encourages schools to set aside a period of time during which students can collect and donate their spare change to help these children who are in less fortunate circumstances than themselves. Still, it is hard to give to everyone, and the need just keeps growing. “2018 was a great year, and we are hoping to find more donations and more businesses to partner with in 2019,” says Gary. “When you see our collection boxes at places like Eastview and Greece Ridge Malls and the Strong Museum, we hope you will consider donating to the many children who would otherwise go without.” For more information, visit https://www.piratetoyfund.org/. TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
