TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success.

Riga Recreation Christmas Happenings Kudos to Mr. Erik Reinhart and his Varsity Vocals singing group from the Churchville-Chili High School Music Department for putting on our annual Christmas Concert at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall to ring in the Holiday Season. Additional Kudos to Riga’s Secret Santa and his elves...Ryan, Matt, Sue and “Winston The Wonder Dog” as they sleighed the roads of Riga searching for uniquely decorated homes in order to present them with gift certificates purchased from local businesses. Homeowners were SO surprised by Santa’s early arrival. Merry Christmas to All and to All a Good Night. David Thomas Recreation Supervisor Town of Riga

Gratitude Finland has been rated the world’s most “happiest” country. Connection with nature, community and simplicity are three of the major factors cited as to the Finnish quality of life. However, there is an over-riding factor that they’ve learned that stands out for them and perhaps for us - gratitude. To quote: “The Nordic countries are united in their embrace of curbed aspirations for the best possible life. This mentality is famously captured in the Law of Jante -- a set of commandments believed to capture something essential about the Nordic disposition,” he explains. They include: “You’re not to think you are anything special” and “You’re not to imagine yourself better than we are.” Which, as Savolainen points out, is pretty much the opposite of America’s endless pursuit of personal and national exceptionalism. This is a great time of year to take stock of what we all have and be grateful. Amen.

[Local Paid Newspaper] Delivery Service I’ve been a subscriber to [local paid newspaper] for 70 plus years. Our new delivery person refuses to drop my paper off at the back of my short drive on the ramp so I can easily pick it up. I’ve posted a sign at my drive asking them to do this to no avail. They drop it in the gutter and if it rains it gets wet and if it snows the plow takes it away. Am I only person in [local town] to have this problem and is there anything that can be done to help? I’m 96 years old!

Fake service animals (dogs) Stop with all these fake service dogs! And stop bringing those fakes into the stores... it’s dirty! They stink. If you have these dogs around people, bathe them please. Don’t just spray them. Dirty and air freshener/perfume doesn’t mix well. The dirty is still there. Seems like any Dr will write off for a *pet. And you can purchase vests online. It’s become too much because you get away with it.

What to do after an auto accident

3.

The insurance experts at GEICO® advise individuals involved in an accident to first determine if any of the involved parties suffered an injury. If you are injured, stay put. If not, check on the condition of the other driver. At this point do not admit any fault or reveal any policy limits. Next, make a call to emergency services to request assistance from the police and an ambulance, if necessary.

Move your vehicle If possible, pull the vehicle over to a safe, well-lit public location. This is especially important if you believe you were the victim of a staged accident, says the Insurance Information Institute. If the car will cause another road hazard, it is best to move it over to the side and use flashers to alert oncoming traffic. It is important that you don't leave the scene, according to American Property Casualty Insurance Association.

4.

Gather evidence Have the police write up an accident report. You should take pictures of the damage to your vehicle, the other vehicle, if possible, and the scene of the accident, including any skid marks, debris and/or property damage. If there are any witnesses to the accident, get their names and contact information. You'll need this information when filing an insurance claim. Exchange information Collect the names, phone numbers, addresses and email addresses of other drivers and vehicle occupants and exchange insurance information with all drivers involved. That includes the insurance company name, policy number and the name of the insured.

If you've been injured, a friend or family member can meet you at the hospital and/or arrange to have your vehicle towed or returned home while you get the care you need. Automotive accidents can be nerve-wracking. Knowing the steps to take can alleviate some stress. SC233728

Samantha Parish: A Journey from Childhood Aspirations to Published Author BY SUZIE WELLS

S

amantha Parish, an accomplished author and Midlakes graduate, stands as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and a strong support system. With two published books under her belt and a unique approach to writing, Parish shares insights on her writing journey, the inspiration behind her work, and her connection with readers: Parish’s journey into the writing world began in her childhood. “I’ve wanted to write ever since I was a kid,” she reminisces. Growing up, she found inspiration in the success stories of renowned authors, particularly Laura Lippman. Additionally, her father’s love for writing and creativity, coupled with the unwavering support of her parents, played a pivotal role in fueling her writing aspirations. Parish acknowledges the opportunities her parents provided, allowing her to pursue writing degrees in college and fulfilling her dream of becoming an author. One of the writing communities that has significantly shaped Parish’s creative process is the Rochester virtual NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) group, noting both books she’s published so far were projects started for that group. Reflecting on her earliest memories Samantha Parish of writing, Parish fondly recalls crafting makeshift books in fifth grade. Stapling construction paper to resemble book covers, she filled them with notebook paper on which she handwrote stories. She also remembers “free write” sessions in fourth grade, in which her notebooks consistently overflowed with creativity. “I always looked forward to that part of the day even as a little kid,” she says. Authenticity is paramount for Parish when she writes. “I want to stay authentic to myself,” she asserts. Her plots are extensions of her identity, and she refuses to compromise her artistic integrity for commercial success. While success is a goal, Parish emphasizes the importance of staying true to the stories that resonate with her heart. Parish’s writing process is a meticulously structured affair, detailed on her Substack account, she says. She starts with a basic chart resembling a rollercoaster, outlining key plot points like the beginning, catalyst, climax, and resolution. She then starts to add details to that chart. She says, “This is usually a sloppy, color-coded mess, but using that I create a spreadsheet with chapters broken into scenes and the details or reasons for each part existing. I go in order with that to write a book. Then I take a nice long break before editing.” For Parish, the ideal writing environment is one devoid of distractions. “I honestly do my best writing in my room away from everyone and everything,” she reveals. This focused approach allows her creativity to flow freely, resulting in the captivating narratives that define her work.

delights of the area. Whether exploring haunted locales like the Seneca Falls historical society, relishing a meal at Smokin Pete’s in Geneva, or exploring Romulus’ Deer Haven Park, the former Army Depot, Parish draws inspiration from her surroundings. Parish’s ability to connect with her audience is rooted in transparency. She explains, “I’m very transparent about who I am as a person and what my struggles in life have been.” Her dark and introspective books delve into niche themes, attracting readers who can relate to the depth of her narratives. Parish’s late pursuit of writing degrees also provides her with a unique life perspective that resonates with readers. As someone who achieved her dream of becoming a published author, Parish has a message for local children: “While my books are not for children, I want children to know they can quite literally become anything they want to be.” Her journey, starting from grade-school aspiration, serves as an inspiration for young minds to pursue their passions. For aspiring writers in the region, Parish offers practical advice. She emphasizes the importance of reading extensively and connecting with local authors. The rich community of writers in the area serves as a valuable support network, providing encouragement and fostering creative growth. Parish encourages writers to strike a balance between writing and enjoying life, ensuring that the creative process remains fulfilling and enjoyable. Samantha Parish’s writing journey is a testament to the power of passion, authenticity, and community. From childhood aspirations to published author, Parish’s story is an inspiration for aspiring writers in the Finger Lakes region and beyond.

Away from the writing desk, Parish finds solace and inspiration in the historic charm of the Finger Lakes region. She frequents places like Geneva, Phelps, Clifton Springs, Seneca Falls, and Waterloo, immersing herself in the rich history and culinary

Here’s a Tip * If you lose a contact lens, you can try turning off the lights and using a flashlight held perpendicular to the floor. They sort of reflect the light, and as you move the beam of light across the floor, it will flash. This has helped me many times. I am a little clumsy when I put my contacts in. Thanks! -- R.E. in South Carolina * Great diet control tip: When serving dinner, portion out the meal, then pack up the leftovers right away. You won’t be as tempted to go back and have seconds, nor stuff a few more mouthfuls in when cleaning up later. * I have a medicine that I take with every meal. Surprisingly, it’s difficult to remember whether I took it already when I’m eating on the go or out with friends. I keep small containers in my purse labeled “lunch” and “dinner,” each with one pill inside. Before I eat, I look in the container. If a pill is there, it means I forgot to take it. Then I refill the container when I get home and it’s ready for next time. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Fire pits can be great places for friends and family to gather around and enjoy special occasions. They’re readily available from garden centers and home improvement retailers at a variety of price points. Permanent fire pits can be built by a homeowner or professionally built by masonry experts.

• Outdoor fireplaces add warmth, and improve the ambiance and value of an outdoor entertaining area. Set up outdoor furniture right next to an outdoor fireplace and you have a cozy alternative living room. • Outdoor heating devices are far more effective than average fire pits or fireplaces. One or two heaters will be enough to keep a large entertaining area warm. • Guests should dress warmly, but having a basket of throw blankets, scarves and parkas available for extra warmth while mingling is helpful. Use outdoor rugs to insulate from the cold from the ground up. • Stews, chilis, soups, and other hot foods can help guests warm themselves up from the inside out. Warmed cider, hot chocolate and mulled wines also can be served to help people stay warm.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Hot Flashes Persist Well Past Menopause and Thyroidectomy

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 and had a thyroidectomy in 2017. My whole thyroid gland was removed. I also had a little bit of cancer. I have started to get hot flashes again. I had originally been on thyroid medicine before and after surgery. Then I was put on levothyroxine and decided to try NP Thyroid. I was doing better on NP Thyroid, then started getting the hot flashes again. At this point, for several reasons, I would rather stay on NP Thyroid for the time being. I was wondering if there is anything I can take for hot flashes? Years ago, in my 50s, I took estrogen, which helped, but this is a different time. I have spoken with other people who are also having hot flashes again. -- Anon. ANSWER: Hot flashes are common -- about 75% of women in North America will experience them around the time of menopause. It’s not uncommon for hot flashes to go away, then return, but I personally haven’t seen them recur after 30 or so years. I’d be concerned that there may be another cause for them, which brings me to your thyroid. Elevated levels of thyroid hormone can cause sensations very similar to hot flashes. One reason that I, along with most endocrinologists, recommend against products like NP Thyroid is because most of those products come from pigs. There are two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Humans have a different ratio of T3 and T4 than pigs do, with T4 getting converted into the active form, T3. T3 is then quickly broken down, so if it’s used, it needs to be dosed twice daily. As a result, if a person takes NP Thyroid, their thyroid levels are too high during one part of the day and too low during another. This isn’t good for anyone; the “high times” not only cause hot flashes, but also predispose people to atrial fibrillation. But it’s particularly a problem in a person with a history of thyroid cancer, where we want the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, the hormone in the pituitary gland that regulates the activity of the thyroid gland) to be on the lower side. If the thyroid blood levels get low in the afternoon/evening when the T3 in NP Thyroid is gone, that can theoretically increase the risk of cancer recurrence as the TSH rises in response. So, in my opinion, you should be on levothyroxine, not NP Thyroid. (I do have a handful of patients who take levothyroxine and also take T3 twice daily. Some people are unable to convert T4 to T3 efficiently.) Estrogen is the most effective treatment for hot flashes, but it increases the risk of heart disease when used by women more than 10 years away from menopause. I don’t normally prescribe it to a woman in her 80s. However, there is a new medication called fezolinetant (Veozah), which is highly effective and reduced hot flashes by 93% in a trial. My only patient on it so far has reported 100% cessation of her hot flashes. There are other rare causes of hot flashes, including tumors that secrete substances, such as carcinoid tumors, and tumors that secrete adrenalin-like hormones (pheochromocytomas).

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEING IN NATURE Nature and overall well-being - Given the aforementioned health benefits related to spending time in nature, it’s easy for even non-scientists to conclude that being outdoors has a profound impact on overall well-being. But non-scientists can rest assured that recent research has confirmed such conclusions. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports found that individuals who spent at least 120 minutes a week in nature were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who spent less time outdoors. Though the authors of the study cautioned that the exposure-response relationship was under-researched, and therefore likely needed to be studied more extensively, in the meantime individuals, after a consultation with their physicians and confirmation that it’s safe to get out more often, can aspire to spend at least 120 minutes in nature each week. The results may speak for themselves.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

FINDING THE RIGHT FITNESS FACILITY Joining a gym can be a great way to get healthy. Monthly gym membership fees may provide the motivation sedentary men and women need to get off the couch and pursue their fitness goals, and the right gym can foster a love of exercise that lasts a lifetime. Finding the right fitness facility is not necessarily as simple as signing up at the one nearest your home or office. Finding a facility that best suits you and your goals may require consideration of a host of factors. Personal goals: Fitness facilities are not all one and the same. Before shopping around for a facility, men and women should make a list of their fitness goals and what they’re looking for in a gym. Aspiring bodybuilders may want a facility with an array of free weights and strength training machines, while men and women whose ultimate goal is to lose weight may prefer facilities geared more toward cardiovascular training. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults participate in both strength and cardiovascular training, so facilities should provide both options. But some gyms may focus more heavily on strength training, while others may offer an extensive selection of cardiovascular equipment. Choose the facility that best aligns with your workout. Amenities: Amenities are another important factor to consider when choosing a fitness facility. Facilities that offer a host of amenities like steam rooms, hot tubs and saunas might provide more motivation to visit the gym for adults accustomed to inactive lifestyles. In addition, such amenities might aid in adults’ recoveries. Workout alternatives: Men and women who have never been very enthusiastic about traditional workouts may want to look for facilities that offer more options than weightlifting and cardiovascular training. Many gyms host classes like yoga, Zumba® and Pilates. Each of these are effective alternatives to more traditional workouts. When shopping around, look for facilities that offer classes for people of various skill levels, as exercises such as yoga can be very difficult for novices. Swimming is another effective alternative to traditional workouts, and many facilities have their own pools. Adults are more likely to exercise if they enjoy their workouts, so people who love to swim may want to limit their searches to facilities with swimming pools. Hours of operation: Hours of operation is another important factor that should not be overlooked. Working adults, especially those with families, may have very small windows of free time in which to exercise. Even if the most pristine and inviting facility won’t do men and women much good if it’s not open when they’re available to workout. Before shopping for a facility, men and women should write out a weekly schedule, making note of when they’ll be working out and making sure to find a facility that accommodates that schedule. Adults looking for a new fitness facility should consider a host of factors to ensure they find one that best suits their needs.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve had to change the time of day that I visit the local dog park, because a new neighbor brings his two huge, aggressive dogs each morning at the same time as I do. They charge other humans, chase and snarl at other dogs, and make it impossible for other dogs to socialize calmly. The neighbor does nothing to control them and tells other owners that it’s their fault that his dogs are acting aggressive. To prevent injury to my dog (or myself), I now wait until after work to go. But this is inconvenient for everyone in the neighborhood. How do I address this problem? -- Dog Mom in New York DEAR DOG MOM: You’re doing the right thing by changing the time that you bring your dog to the park. It’s important to remove a dog from a situation you perceive as potentially dangerous or traumatic for them, and protecting them from harm. That’s only the first step, however. The new dogs are terrorizing other dogs within the park, making life miserable for them and their owners. It’s not fair, nor is it right. Dog parks within a city or town typically have rules of conduct posted at each entrance, but sometimes they’re vague. It’s up to each owner to properly train and socialize their dogs, and to keep them away from the park if they can’t control rough play, aggression or reactivity. Report the problem to the organization in charge of maintaining the dog park. This may be a community group or the municipal parks department. Contacting animal control is another option. Write down the dates and times that incidents have occurred. If there is no active community group for the dog park, consider starting one so that owners can air their grievances and work out problems as a group. H(c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.

I HAVE A DREAM... Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered to a crowd of 250,000 in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, is one of the most memorable moments of Dr. King’s life. In the 17-minute monologue, Dr. King called for an end to racism. Interestingly, the “dream” component of the speech wasn’t in the original draft. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson reportedly coached Dr. King to tell the listeners “about the dream.”
