HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Contractors and D.I.Y welcome
The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THINK YOU NEED A NEW ROOF? THINK AGAIN.
POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

RESTAURANT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

HOW TO HELP SENIORS ADAPT TO AUTOMOTIVE TECH Learn the tech yourself: Assistance technologies are not all one and the same. Vehicle manufacturers have their own systems and there can be a learning curve when adapting to a new one. If you aspire to teach a senior how to utilize the assistance technologies in his or her vehicle, first learn the tech on your own. If both you and your aging friend or family member own a Subaru, chances are you already know how to use the tech in your loved one’s vehicle. If you drive cars made by different manufacturers, visit the dealership where your loved one bought his or her car and ask for a quick tutorial on all the safety features in the vehicle. Salesman demonstrate these features every day, so it shouldn’t take long for them to show you the ropes.

(315) 462-5271 SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Take it easy behind the wheel. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy reports that aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 30 percent when driving at highway speeds and 40 percent when driving in stop-and-go traffic. Avoid speeding and rapid acceleration and braking.

A CLEAN CAR IS MONEY IN THE BANK (NAPSI)—Purchasing a new car is a major financial investment. Keeping it clean can be an easy and inexpensive way to protect its resale and trade-in value. “Many motorists procrastinate when it comes to cleaning their vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or have it cleaned professionally, proactively keeping your car clean on the outside and tidy on the inside will pay big dividends when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s value over time.”
Magic Maze NECKLACE STYLES
The Car Care Council suggests five simple steps to keep a vehicle clean, helping protect it from the elements and preserve its value. • Declutter—Start the cleaning process by removing excess clutter from inside the car as it can be distracting and hazardous, especially when debris finds its way near the gas and brake pedals. Don’t forget to clear out items that have accumulated in the trunk as they can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. • Clean the Interior—The next step is to thoroughly clean the interior, wash the windows, and clean and install floor mats. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis. A clean and orderly interior lets you spot issues in the cabin so you can get them repaired before they get worse. • Wash the Exterior—Give your car a good wash from top to bottom using products specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body and don’t use the same washing mitt or cloth for both. • Wax Twice a Year—Waxing not only protects a vehicle’s finish, it makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint. It’s important to note that waxing should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight. • Fix Chips—If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. For a quick fix until you can get paint touch-up supplies, dab a little clear nail polish on the scratch. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Free Guide: To order a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website, www.carcare.org. AUTOMOTIVE

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For moister and softer cookies, use honey as a substitute for a third of the sugar in your cookie recipe. * And speaking of honey, did you know it has antibacterial properties? Yep! Try rubbing a bit of it over a small cut for faster, more natural healing.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were. Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he just happened to like 57. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue. * Mob boss Vincent Gigante would wander around New York in his bathrobe to convince the police he was insane, and thus avoid capture.

* “Keep venetian blinds from sticking to one another and discourage dust by rubbing them down individually with a sheet of fabric softener. This effect will last at least a month, in my experience.” -- S.F. in Alabama * “Have a headache? Try drinking a couple of glasses of a sports drink. This works for my friends and me. Maybe we just need to be drinking more water, but the sports drinks get us back on track more quickly than medicine most times.” -- E.L. in Colorado * “This time-tested tip will keep your houseplants in the green while you’re away from home: Set plants in the bathtub in an inch or less of water. If your flowerpot does not have drain holes, get a short length of cotton rope and feed it from the topsoil to the tub. This will keep plants alive and thriving for a week or more.” -- D.R. in Florida * “Having a hard time cutting out soda? Try this: Every time you reach for a glass of soda, drink a full cup of water first. You will find that your thirst is sated better, and you are not as “thirsty” for that sugar water!” -- F.E. in South Carolina

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Don’t Forget to Provide for Pets in Your Will DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an attorney who helps clients prepare wills, I’d like to urge your readers to review their end-of-life plans and make sure that their pets are provided for. It’s so important to designate a new caregiver for their pets so that they are quickly rehomed to a person who will love and care for them. I own a lovable German Shepherd, and each year, I review my own life plan and adjust it if needed -- usually an adjustment in the amount I’ll give to his future caregiver to help with the financial aspects of taking in a pet, which can be substantial. -- Darren H., Philadelphia DEAR DARREN: Thank you for this reminder. None of us likes to think about the possibility of dying, but as people who love and care for our pets, we need to do it for them, and make sure they will be loved and cared for. You can read more about how to include a pet clause in your will at this link: https://tinyurl. com/3yjbzmdx. What if you’re not in a position to make or update your will at this time? Put it on your to-do list, and in the meantime, make a list of trusted relatives and friends who you think would be good caregivers for your pet. We stand with Ukraine. You Can, Too. BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he news headlines and footage pouring in from the Ukraine are incredibly tragic. “Pregnant woman & her baby injured in Mariupol maternity hospital bombing have died, AP reports,” “Strike hits facility for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities near Kyiv, says regional council,” and many such headlines, like these from CNN, stream to American homes, spaced by minutes, not hours. Many of us around the globe watch, horrified, asking, What can I do? In the face of this devastating war, more than 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled their country, arriving as war refugees in several neighboring nations. Some arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Although it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate relief organizations, we are bringing you four we feel confident are truly supporting Ukrainians in need. ROCMaidan: ROCMaidan is a Rochester-based community organization that delivers medical supplies and equipment, arranges humanitarian aid, and supplies injured Ukrainians with medical support. Group members recognize that Ukrainians have faced conflict for some time, have been supporting them for several years, and are continuing to send supplies to many Ukrainian hospitals. Formed to support democratic Ukrainian voices in 2014’s EuroMaidan, ROCMaidan’s diverse professionals “provide information, advocacy, connection and communication with federal, state, and local officials, information sharing with media and educational institutions, and the general public.” rocmaidan.org | contact@rocmaidan.org | 1040 Jackson Rd, Webster, NY 14580 | (585) 872-0240 Global Empowerment Mission: With its teams on-site in Medyka, Poland, Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) is at the Ukrainian border in one of the countries currently receiving thousands of Ukrainian war refugees. Established in 2011 as a nonprofit first responder organization assisting with global disasters, GEM quickly found itself sending support to crises in 28 countries and all 50 U.S. States as well as U.S. Territories. “In 2017, GEM began operating Bethenny Frankel’s #BStrong initiative, which fills this need by supplying unrestricted cash card distributions, allowing beneficiaries to meet their individual needs.” According to its website, GEM was almost immediately active along the Ukrainian border. GEM arrived “along the Ukrainian-Polish border within 2 days of the start of the crisis.” Its plan includes the following: • Aid into Ukraine: Since the cities under siege are running low on supplies, your donation is importing and purchasing food, water, basic necessities, medicine and medical equipment needed in a war zone. These are handed off to our Polish partner who delivers the aid to cities like Kiev. • Relocation assistance: Since the border cities are inundated with refugees, we are rapidly identifying people who have friends and family within the EU that can house and support them…[providing] transportation, lodging and airfare to the destination of their loved ones. Also, we are helping refugees out of tents and into warm homes of Polish families through our connection with the Polish churches.
• Stability housing: With our Polish partners…renting additional housing facilities to refugees who are unable to find temporary housing through Polish families…We are [providing] housing, food and transportation. • Non-Ukrainian refugees: We have identified a special class of refugees where the needs are much more complicated due to visa situations and language barriers…[providing] a service that other NGOs may not currently provide. • Expansion into Hungary & Romania: …Scaling outside of Poland to partners in two other Ukrainian border countries to provide aid. With respective warehouses in Poland and Hungary, millions of dollars in supplies on the way, millions more in aid, hundreds of thousands of pounds of food, and more, GEM encourages everyone to join them in supporting the men, women, and children desperately fleeing Ukraine. globalempowermentmission.org | info@globalempowermentmission.org | 1810 NW 94th Ave Doral, FL 33172 | (800) 995-7604 Ukrainian Red Cross Society: For over 100 years, the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (URCS) has faithfully served the people of Ukraine and beyond, sending over 100,000 of its nurses to the front during World War II. Now, in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion, they are performing continuous disaster relief due to explosions, fires, and the many other ravages of war. This relief includes “coordinating the reception of humanitarian aid from abroad and its further distribution, working at border crossing points with refugees, providing first aid, providing food at the railway station to people who have been forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict and assisting them in resettlement, delivering humanitarian aid to bomb shelters, medical institutions, places of temporary stay, and more. redcross.org.ua/en | national@redcross.org.ua | Ukraine|0-800-331-800 Sava’s Safe Haven: Something that can sometimes almost be forgotten in the midst of Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis is the effect this upheaval would necessarily have on Ukrainian families’ beloved pets. For many, it is as unthinkable to leave their furry family members behind as it would be for many of us. This week, in our Paw’s Corner feature, Sam Mazzotta encourages a reader worried to review an article on Euronews.green entitled, “The countries and organizations helping Ukraine’s pet refugees find a safe haven.” This article sites a Romanian group called Sava’s Safe Haven, stating that the group helps refugees working to bring their pets into Romania with them. Also, Sava’s Safe Haven takes pets from single men ages 18-30 who are currently forbidden to leave Ukraine which is under martial law. As Mazzotta wisely encouraged, check out a registered charity before sending it money; visit www.charitynavigator.org to search by name. www.savassafehave.com| info@savassafehaven.com | Romania | +40-766-749-680

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Yellow Lenses to Rescue for Macular Degeneration ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an elderly friend who’s becoming blind from macular degeneration. After hearing of a particularly frustrating event she experienced due to vision loss, I remembered the great clarity that the yellow-lens (to reduce glare) glasses gave me, not just at night, but daytime also. So, I sent her a pair to see if it would help, as a lastditch effort. She called me crying, it had made such a difference! She has now had her prescription eyeglasses done with the yellow (blue-canceling?) lenses. Of course, we understand that this is just a temporary help, and won’t prevent the blindness from taking its course, but it has given her much better vision for a time. -- I.L.B. ANSWER: Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. It is a degeneration of the central part of the retina, called the macula, which is responsible for fine detail central vision. The underlying cause is not precisely known, and the course is progressive. I was able to find a 2002 study that confirmed that yellow or orange lenses improved contrast sensitivity in people with early age-related macular degeneration, whereas red and gray lenses worsened it. Another study suggested that the perceived benefit (the subjective experience by the person) was enhanced, but that objective improvement in vision was not actually improved much at all. In my opinion, perceived benefit is still worth a great deal, and since there is little effective treatment for the more common “dry” form of ARMD beyond vitamins and smoking cessation, I am publishing your letter in hopes that some people will get improvements in their vision, as your friend did, from this low-cost treatment with essentially no risk of side effects. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

(NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

585-289-6001 • Shortsville, NY RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.
DID YOU KNOW? According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer survival rates vary greatly worldwide. While survival rates range from 80 percent or better in North America and countries such as Sweden and Japan, those figures drop to roughly 60 percent in middle-income countries. Lowincome countries fare the worst, with survival rates below 40 percent. The WHO attributes the low survival rates in low-income countries to inadequate diagnosis and treatment facilities and the lack of early detection programs. Early detection is often essential when battling breast cancer, as late-stage survival rates are low regardless of where a person lives. For example, the American Cancer Society notes that, in the United States, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancers detected in their earliest stages (often referred to as “stage 0” or “stage I”) is 100 percent. The five-year relative survival rate in the United States is considerably lower for stage IV breast cancers, at right around 22 percent.

S E V RA Whiteout Rescue On March 12th during a whiteout, I ended up in a ditch on 20A in Geneseo. I want to thank the gentleman in the dark SUV who pulled my vehicle out. He was a lifesaver. He wouldn’t take any money. I was frantic, but thanks to him, I made it home. Thanks to the driver from M&R who also helped. There are good and caring people out there, and I am so appreciative!
It’s [not] a gas! Why do all gas stations raise prices as fast as they do? What about all the gas that is in tanks in the ground that was purchased at lower price? Are they are making a ton of money at our expense? Science, not Politics Climate change is not confusing if you follow the science. But it is if you follow the politics. The science has been studied for decades, and the connection between CO2 emissions and climate change is clear. Human activity is affecting the climate in mere decades, not the eons of naturally occurring climate change. Who’s denying it? People whose political dogma disagrees with proven scientific fact.
Shop Happy Many thanks to Margret and all the other volunteers at the Thrift Shop in Livonia. The shop is clean, well-organized, and prices are very reasonable. They provide a good service to our area and surrounding areas. They also collect items for and provide assistance to the Livonia Food Pantry. Good job; you are appreciated! Thanks, Midlakes! Amazing job to Midlakes High School on their opening weekend of Elf The Musical! The students have worked so hard, and it shows. We all need some laughs right about now, and the show did not disappoint!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Waiting Out COVID
An unscientific poll of senior friends and neighbors revealed just what we’ve accomplished during the past two years of this pandemic. The answer: not much. Mostly, it seems, we’ve been waiting. Waiting for it to be safe to shop in person. Waiting for our clubs and meetings to start up again. Waiting for a visit from family across the country that has feared bringing COVID to our door. Waiting for all the vaccines and boosters to do what they were supposed to do. Waiting to be unafraid again. In the beginning we were all for following the rules. We seniors are a tough bunch, and we know a lot. We have coping skills that got us through any number of crises life has thrown at us. But this pandemic has brought many of us to our knees. Each person in my humble survey could, when queried, point to the exact time when the tide turned in their mental health. It was the omicron variant and the additional vaccine booster, when it became apparent that COVID wasn’t going away soon. For me, a daily to-do list has come in handy. On a sheet of paper I have two columns: one work, one play. In the work column there are household tasks such as doing one load of laundry. In the play column are things like wiping the dust off the piano and learning a new song each week. On the back of the page are two more columns. One is a list of names, and somebody gets called every day. In the other column is an ever-lengthening list of things that are going right. This one is sometimes hard to fill out, but it gets done, even if it’s only notes like: Completed a crossword puzzle in seven minutes. Try it. Make your lists, especially if you’ve felt yourself sinking under the weight of this never-ending pandemic. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE
Part-time Position (Three days per week)
Administrative Assistant
Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.

Diamond engagement rings are presented as tokens of love and affection during wedding proposals. The majority of first-time brides will receive a diamond ring, with surveys indicating only 13 percent opt for another gemstone. Researchers from Emory University determined that the average price for a diamond ring is roughly $2,500. However, grooms can spend much more. Diamonds have symbolized eternal love for centuries, perhaps since they were first discovered in India more than 2,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks actually thought diamonds were tears of the gods, while ancient Romans believed diamonds were splinters from heavenly stars.
