FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC
NEED IT? RENT IT!
Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork, or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

CNY WINDOWS The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. ●

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Periostitis: Periostitis is commonly known as “shin splints.” This is an overuse injury that occurs in athletes who are engaged in activities that involve rapid deceleration. Periostitis causes inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum, and typically affects people who repetitively jump, run or lift heavy weights. To head off potential pain in the shins, young athletes can gradually build up their tolerance for physical activity. Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts may also help. Incorporating cross-training into a regimen also can work.

Dr. Christine Stein Au D.
School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
There’s No Magic Bullet to Put Belly Fat in Check
weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman, mostly healthy (apart from well-controlled high blood pressure). Looking at me, people assume I am skinny, but I have a well-concealed HUGE belly along with my thin arms and legs. I look like an olive stuck with toothpicks. My diet is healthy for the most part: I eat snack foods, deep-fried fast foods or sweets only rarely. I have read about how to eliminate belly fat, but there is so much contradictory info, each claiming to be the best. What are truly effective ways to help eliminate belly fat? -- M.H. ANSWER: First, I would want to be sure what you have really is belly fat. While there are men (and a few women) who have that body shape due to fat, I have seen far too many cases of liver disease (where the abdominal cavity is filled with fluid due to high pressure in the liver) and ovarian cancer (where the abdomen is filled with fluid due to tumor). I would want to be sure you had been evaluated for these (and other) concerns, especially if this is a change in your normal body shape. If it is abdominal fat, there is no magic diet. What works for someone else (even your twin sister, if you had one) might not work for you. For this reason, one single type of diet does not fit all. It may take patience and trying several different options before finding what works for you. General advice includes avoiding the foods you noted you eat sparingly. Eat lots of vegetables and whole grains with fiber; modest amounts of fruits; several servings of nuts and fish weekly; and no more than modest amounts of meats. Advice from an expert in weight management may be of great benefit. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

585-289-6001 • Shortsville, NY THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK DUMPLINGS Makes about 45 50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size) Vegetable oil, for frying
Magic Maze COULDN’T READ MUSIC
Filling: 5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped 1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil 1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs 11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped 3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped 3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped 1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste To serve: Silgochu (dried chilli threads) 1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture. For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets. To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer. Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

Mother is a name held sacred By most mortals of the earth; It means great love and sacrifice From the very day of birth, A love that’s so full of beauty, So tender, so very true! Something, seemingly, from Heaven That has come to me and you. There’s no love so understanding And so faithful to the end As a Mother’s love—God bless her!— That to us our Lord did send. ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “Mother” (1940s)

Unique gifts ideas for Mother’s Day Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater then nothing will elicit a bigger smile than tickets to a Broadway show she has had her eyes on. If Broadway is a bit too far for you to travel, do your homework and find a traveling production of a former Broadway show. Such productions often feature many of the same actors who made the play famous on Broadway so you’re still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Pets Wearing Pants? How About No!
Call 315-210-0679 today!
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I saw something on social media about a town in New York state that passed an ordinance requiring pets to “cover their genitals” by wearing pants. This is ridiculous! Is it for real? -- Clark G. DEAR CLARK: It’s a wild idea, but no, the photo circulating on social media is fake. Pet owners, you can put away those doggy pants. (Unless your dog enjoys wearing them, of course.) Officials with the city of Auburn, New York, were unpleasantly surprised to find their city’s letterhead going viral on social media just a couple of weeks ago. A fake letter said that residents’ pets would be required to wear pants outside so that their genitals would not be in view. “It is an uncomfortable and difficult situation for a parent, grandparent or guardian to have to explain to their ward when they are questioned about canine and feline genitals,” the letter said. It also claimed that many towns in New England have made pet pants mandatory -- also not true. It’s probably no accident that the fake letter started circulating just before April Fool’s Day. And while it seems like a funny prank, the city of Auburn isn’t laughing. “The intentional misrepresentation of the law and the forgery of the signature of an elected official are illegal acts and should be taken seriously,” City Clerk Chuck Mason told The Citizen. (Read the article at this link: https:// tinyurl.com/2p8uedv4, or search for “auburnpub.com, pet pants”). Hopefully, no one takes this to heart and tries to get a similar ordinance passed in their town. Our dogs and cats can let it all hang out with no fear of official reprisal, or ladies fainting away from the shock. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com. S E V RA Good Friday Treat! My friend and I stopped in for lunch at Peppermints in Avon on Good Friday. We each ordered one of their awesome fish fries. Imagine my surprise as I got up to pay for our meal when our server said our check was paid. We both were overwhelmed with the kindness! I don’t know if it was someone who knew us or a random stranger. Whomever it was, we were appreciative of the gesture, and as always, the fish fry was excellent!
Sky High Our village recently reassessed everyone. The average increase was 25%, raising all assessments by thousands. People are struggling with gas prices and food prices; now this? Seniors on fixed incomes will be forced out. If the leadership of our community does not intervene and lower the new assessments, we all need to stand together and vote them out. Sirens Needed Our friend is a first responder/fireman. We have been with him on many occasions when the siren goes off, and he leaves in a flash. Yes, there is an app on his phone that alerts of an incident. However, not every event is reported early enough to be sent out through the app, so first responders are notified via the siren. An incident doesn't just mean a fire. It could be a car accident (and someone must be removed with the Jaws of Life), child or animal locked in a hot car, an elderly person who has fallen and is unconscious- any number of things. These sirens let us know that our brave men and women are now aware that we need them. Be relieved that this notification system exists. If anything happened to you or one of your loved ones, you would be grateful that a warning has gone out to all your local first responders. It could make a difference between life or death. Stop when required! To the selfish people who decide to blow stop signs and/or cut people off in such a hurry just to drag their butts to their destination while sightseeing: If you're in that much of a hurry to break the law while cutting others off, at least continue on and don't hold up traffic! Money can't buy common sense!

Good Neighbors! On Tuesday, April 11th, we had appointments for our 2nd Covid boosters. Everything went fine at CVS in Avon. The pharmacist was excellent. Once we left, we walked to our car. My husband, with his low blood sugar, got dizzy. I got him part-way into the front seat, and he couldn't move. Just then, a woman in a van pulled up, and she asked if she could help. She had my husband put his arms around her, and she pulled him up and got him straight around. She was a nurse named Michelle from Caledonia: a true angel. Also, a young man came over to our car to see if we needed further assistance. They were both wonderful and really helped us out. God bless! - Martha Thanks! Thank you to the unknown gentleman who helped push my disabled car to the shoulder of Gauss Road on April 5th. I’m sorry that I didn’t ask your name but know that I am thankful for your help! - Pat, Bloomfield
Siren Rethink You're right. We are all grateful for first responders in our community, but you seem to think that the siren, which has been around for a long time, is affecting so many on the autism spectrum or with hearing aids? Is it really, or is it just bothering you? I'm a mother to an 8-year-old nonverbal boy, who I teach to understand all these sirens and loud noises as well as to understand their meanings. The sirens may not be necessary for those who receive the notifications to respond to such emergencies, but it's a general public notification each time to make sure your local fire department (if coming your way) has room. Also, not everyone is on their phones 24/7 (besides the fact the sirens remind me how important life is and how quickly it can go). So, that nice loud siren helps get those responders to the scene and or firehouse quicker. Maybe you should wear ear plugs and just be thank our community is still safe because of those "noise pollution sirens."

Pretzels, somewhat surprisingly, got their start in the Catholic Church. Sometime around the 7th Century A.D., monks presented their students with treats of baked dough twisted in the shape of crossed arms. At the time, crossing one’s arms was the traditional posture for prayer. Not only that, but pretzels, made from water, flour and salt, were also the perfect food for Lent, when meat, dairy and eggs were prohibited.

Loves Earth Day! BY AMANDA DUDEK

harmful environmental side effects such as contaminated groundwater, toxic waste and radioactive residue, polluted air, water, and soil, not to mention human rights problems. Far from being biodegradable, these items commonly produce toxic e-waste at the end of their notoriously short life cycles, putting many at risk of exposure to over 1,000 harmful substances, including lead, mercury, nickel, brominated flame retardants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
022 marks the 52nd anniversary of the first Earth Day. Reported to be the world’s largest secular observance, Earth Day is expected to mobilize over 1 billion people participating in more than 190 countries (there are approximately 195) around the globe. This incredible, green global phenomenon came from humble beginnings, and like many positive and powerful ideas, it was catalyzed by the written word.
In 1962, Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring took the world by storm as it was quickly published across 24 countries. Concern over the impact of pollution on the environment, living organisms, and public health grew exponentially, blossoming into the modern environmental movement. With a strong, grassroots presence in local colleges, those early environmental champions chose April 22nd, 1970, to be the first Earth Day in hopes of generating the greatest possible student participation between spring break and final exams. This first Earth Day served as a rallying cry. “Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around [their] shared common values,” states EARTHDAY.ORG. But it wasn’t just environmental groups that united. People from all walks of life, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political persuasions joined together to protect our precious planet. In short order, the United States Environmental Protection Agency was formed. A host of protective environmental legislation soon followed, including such groundbreaking items as the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. This early legislation has done immeasurable good in protecting us and all species that call Earth home. In the more than 50 years since it began, Earth Day has grown in scope and impact as awareness of environmental issues—as well as their importance—has skyrocketed worldwide. Today, over a billion people participate in environmentally focused activities each year, many taking advantage of increasing opportunities to volunteer around their communities and beyond. At the Penny Saver, we believe in being a part of positive environmental change. Print uses the energy of the brief touch of ink to paper compared to the 24/7 energy of digital counterparts. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Odds Are Your Pantry Holds Expired Food
Is it time to go through your pantry and look for any expired food items that might have been purchased over the past two years? You might be surprised. I sure was. I’d been careful, with new items lined up behind old ones in my cabinets. The problem I just discovered, after picking up a load of curbside items, is the expiration dates of newer items aren’t necessarily better than items that have been in the cabinet for a while. They might be worse. Why, I inquired of our store manager, was a box of crackers due to expire sooner than the box I bought two months ago? With a sigh, he admitted the problem: The warehouse is having a terrible time getting in anything. And managers have set up their own grocery swap with other nearby stores in the chain, basically bidding on items another store might have. “I’ll give you six boxes of crackers for six half-gallons of whole milk!” Additionally, he said, he’s having a heck of a time getting trained people to work the night shift to stock the shelves correctly. Then, when the curbside pickup people race through the aisles to select items for each order, they grab from the front ... without looking at expiration dates. Which is a long way of saying: Check your groceries. Either when you pick them up curbside and bring them home or when you take something out of your cabinets, look at the expiration dates and store them accordingly. A helpful note in seeing those expiration dates at home: A black marker is very handy to write expiration dates on packages and cans that can be seen at a glance. No more turning jars over trying to find a date; no more squinting at the tiny print. You’ll have all the dates in large black letters. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY
Penny Saver
Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

Throughout the history of commerce, many a deal has been made at the dinner table. Business dinners are a great opportunity to lay a foundation for long, potentially lucrative professional relationships. Etiquette is important when hosting business dinners, as a breach of decorum can derail a relationship before it even begins. Professionals tasked with hosting business dinners can take the following tips to heart before sitting down to break bread with their colleagues. Choose a restaurant that can cater to various diets. Hosting a business dinner can be similar to hosting family during the holiday season, when hosts must cater to guests with various food allergies and dietary restrictions. Asking for such information in advance of a business dinner may seem intrusive to guests, so try to find a restaurant that offers a flexible menu capable of accommodating vegetarians, vegans and guests who might be gluten-free. Avoid restaurants that specialize in styles of cuisine that might be unhealthy or so extraordinary that guests might be hesitant to order anything from the menu. Confirm the reservation. Make the reservation well in advance of the date of the dinner, and don’t forget to confirm the reservation a week beforehand. Confirming a week beforehand gives hosts time to book another reservation should theirs have been canceled by mistake. Arrive at the restaurant before your guests. Hosts should arrive at the restaurant before their guests so they can address any potential issues in advance of the beginning of the dinner. Arriving early gives hosts time to ensure the table set aside for their party is not in a heavily trafficked area of the restaurant, such as adjacent to the kitchen or restroom. Hosts who arrive later than their guests may also give guests the mistaken impression that they are unimportant. Let guests order first. Once everyone has sat down at the table, hosts should allow guests to order first. Doing so saves guests who don’t want to eat that much the potential discomfort of sitting there while their hosts eat an appetizer and/or large entrée. If guests choose to abstain from alcohol, follow suit. If guests want to have a drink, hosts can limit their consumption to a single beverage. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly. Hosts should try to keep pace with their guests in regard to how quickly or slowly they eat. Guests might feel uncomfortable if they finish first or feel pressured to eat quickly if their hosts finish first. Pay in advance. Business dinner guests do not expect to pay for their meals. While it’s widely accepted that hosts will pay, it can feel awkward to have the bill brought to the table. Upon arriving early, hosts can give their credit cards to the wait staff and ask that they be charged without having the bill brought to the table. If necessary, step away from the table during the meal to sign the bill and address any discrepancies. Business dinners have sparked many successful professional relationships, oftentimes thanks to hosts who took the time to ensure the dinners went off without a hitch.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A good non-slip bathmat is essential in the tub to prevent accidents. Grab an extra one to drape over the edge of the tub for help when entering and exiting. * “To remove residue left over from price tags, use hairspray. Remove as much paper as possible, and then give it a good squirt. Use a plastic scraper to lightly scrape off the adhesive.” -- L.P. in Ohio * “Guacamole is a precious commodity at my house, but sometimes I want a snack, not a whole bowl. I have struggled with how to save the leftovers, because once it browns, it’s done. I learned a new trick, though. Simply put the leftovers in the smallest container possible and tamp down to press out all the air. Then carefully add a thin layer of water. Seal and refrigerate for up to three days. When you’re ready to dip, pour off the water and stir!” -- C.D. in California * “I have an old cedar chest from my grandmother that had lost its smell. My husband removed all the contents and sanded it with superfine grit sandpaper. It smells wonderful now.” -- J.K. in Iowa * Got bread ends? Store in a bag in the freezer until you need breadcrumbs for a recipe. Pulse frozen chunks in a chopper or blender for instantly useable crumbs. * Need a quick measure? A dollar bill (or other U.S. paper currency) is exactly 6 inches long.
