Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. Did You Know? An individual retirement account, or IRA, is a type of account men and women who meet certain eligibility requirements can open to save money for their retirement. Unlike a 401(k), a type of retirement account that is provided by an employer, an IRA must be opened by an individual. FOUR TIPS FOR BETTER MANAGING YOUR RETIREMENT BUDGET (NAPSI)—A recent survey by Ameriprise Financial found that 68 percent of retirees with at least $100,000 in assets have not yet taken money out of their savings, beyond what they must withdraw as part of the IRS’ required mini-mum distributions from their retirement accounts. It turns out that the transition from saving money to living off of those assets is much tougher for seniors to navigate than many realized. The Ameriprise survey found that just one in five seniors say they feel “confident” about how to draw down their retirement savings, leaving them fraught with uncertainty about how to manage their budgets. Helpful Hints Here are four tips that personal finance experts recommend for tapping that nest egg and making the most of your retirement years: 1. Revisit your monthly expenses. Many people do a good job of tracking their spending in their preretirement years and establishing projections for what they anticipate they will spend in retirement. But it’s important to revisit those estimates and use your actual expenditures to fine-tune your average monthly expenses. This will give you a more precise handle on your spending needs and might also identify some areas where you can reduce spending. 2. Consider the bucket approach to income. A common approach to the asset withdrawal phase of retirement is to establish a “bucket strategy.” This approach involves breaking your nest egg into three buckets: (1) The Cash Bucket (one to three years of short-term income); (2) The Income Bucket (five to eight years of medium-term income); and (3) The Growth Bucket (10+ years of long-term income). As each of the first two buckets gets low on dollars, you replenish them with assets from the others. This helps you achieve stability in your cash flow and increases peace of mind. 3. Maximize the value of your assets. In addition to savings accounts and retirement accounts, you may have the ability to unlock value from assets that you didn’t consider. For example, if you own your home, a reverse mortgage can free up cash for you while you still live there. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. It’s your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime. When you sell a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—you get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. 4. Keep a backstop in place. Financial advisers often recommend that you keep a cash backstop in place of perhaps 12−18 months’ worth of living expenses. This will help cover unexpected costs (the biggest risk factor is health care expenses) and provide you with some reassurance that you can weather a sudden big-ticket item without having to cancel that longplanned vacation. Remember, it’s your retirement; pay yourself first. For seniors who have fine-tuned their expense budget, allocated their income into buckets that ensure cash flow, maximized the value of their everyday assets and put in place a cash backstop, there’s no reason to hesitate to draw down your retirement accounts anymore. DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the story with Prilosec? Doctors routinely tell people with GERD or acid stomach to take this forever. Yet it clearly describes only a 14-day treatment on the box. A physician assistant told me that because of a rare infrequent condition some users have that the manufacturer is legally bound to post the 14-day limit, but that the general population can safely ignore it. Can you enlighten and reassure those of us whose physicians have said to take it long term? -- C.D.C. ANSWER: The patient instructions in the over-the-counter versions of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec), do recommend a 14-day course. However, longer courses may indeed be prescribed by a licensed prescriber, such as a PA. Even so, there are relatively few people who need lifelong medication. Those who do may have a condition such as Barrett’s esophagus, in which PPIs -- the most potent medical treatment to suppress stomach acid -- are necessary. They not only relieve symptoms, they are also prescribed in hopes of reducing the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. The data on this are still not clear. For people with acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease), PPIs are usually not needed lifelong. However, it may still be reasonable to use these drugs long term if the prescriber feels the benefit outweighs the risk. There are several risks of long-term use of PPIs. Stomach acids are important in protecting against bacteria, and two kinds of bacterial infections are more common in PPI users. The first is in the colon, especially of Clostridium difficile, where PPI users are about 30% more likely to be infected and may do so even without the antibiotic use that is the most common risk factor for C. diff. The second is pneumonia, although the apparent association may not be as strong as formerly thought. Low stomach acid may decrease absorption of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium, iron and vitamin B12. PPIs were thought to increase the risk of a rare tumor, gastric carcinoid, based on data from rats, and of colon cancer. Those risks have not been seen in humans. Early data suggest increased risk of kidney disease and dementia. That risk appears to be small, if it even exists. Long-term PPI use has some risk of side effects and should be used only when there are benefits to PPIs that can’t be obtained with other treatments, including other medications and lifestyle changes. This especially includes better diet, weight loss when appropriate and not eating right before bed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES PATIENT EXPERIENCE FOR WOMEN UNDERGOING BREAST CANCER TREATMENT (NAPSI)—A mother, a sister, a friend…many of us know someone who has been touched by breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, affecting an astonishing one in eight women in the United States. Thanks to technological advances in detection and new treatment approaches, women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer can opt to keep their breast with less invasive surgery and with breastconserving treatments. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that 59 percent of women with an early breast cancer diagnosis (Stage 1 or 2) undergo breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) versus 36 percent of women who decide to have a total mastectomy. Research has shown that breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy is as effective as a mastectomy in decreasing the risk of local cancer recurrence for most women*. “One way that breast-conserving surgery is now easier is due to a new innovation in breast cancer treatment—SAVI SCOUT® Radar Localization. This resolves one of the most difficult aspects of breast conservation surgery by eliminating the need to place a wire inside of the breast tissue to locate a tumor,” said Dr. Barry Rosen, Chairman of Department of Surgery at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago; and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine. “Many of my patients who have undergone a procedure with SCOUT® are impressed with the benefits, including shorter procedure times and decreased anxiety.” Prior to 2015, surgeons generally relied on wire localization to locate a tumor during a lumpectomy procedure. With wire localization, a radiologist guides a thin, hooked wire through the skin and into the tumor on the day of surgery. The surgeon then uses the wire to identify the area of tissue targeted for removal. This resulted in long days of surgery for women, with two procedures performed on the same day. With SCOUT, a tiny reflector, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the tumor site at any time during the patient’s treatment and well in advance of surgery. The SCOUT Wire-Free Radar Breast Localization System uses safe, nonradioactive, radar technology to provide real-time and precise surgical guidance during the surgery. The ability to precisely locate tumors increases the probability of complete cancer removal and reduces the likelihood of needing follow-up surgery, allowing any additional treatments to occur sooner. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in better cosmetic outcomes. SCOUT is also used to effectively localize lymph nodes and tumors prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy administered prior to surgery) and can be used with any type of imaging over the course of a patient’s care. More than 350 hospitals have implemented the SCOUT System, and to date, over 45,000 women have had a wire-free localization experience. Dog Bitten in Snout Keeps Licking Wound DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Jesse” was bitten on the face by another dog, injuring his snout and nose so badly that it required several stitches. I can’t get Jesse to stop licking and pawing at the wound, and now he’s tearing out the stitches. The wound looks infected. What should I do? -Kamo M. DEAR KAMO: Head straight back to the veterinarian to get the wound treated for infection and closed up again. This time, have Jesse fitted for a cone-shaped E-collar. It’s jokingly called the “cone of shame,” but is an important medical device for helping to heal just such an injury. Dogs really don’t like E-collars, and they can cause stress, but if he’s able to paw at the wound, it must be worn. You can take it off Jesse at mealtimes so he can access his food, but it must go right back on. There are a few other protective collars available that are more comfortable, like padded rings, but these may not stop the pawing. Jesse’s also licking his nose, which is understandable since it probably feels weird and swollen and itchy. This can be a problem area because dogs naturally lick their nose throughout the day. The vet may give you medicine to help it heal or may recommend an overthe-counter antibiotic ointment. Put the medicine on as directed. Help reduce the chance of infection by having clean, fresh water for Jesse to drink (to clean his tongue before licking his nose) and replacing any manky old dog toys (which have a lot of germs) with clean chew toys. For the past 10 years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Park's Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up the Parks event at all Monroe County Parks. This year's initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste management, Churchville Lions and LEO Clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Assn. and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary Schools. This year, it was noticeable that there was much less garbage. We feel that the "Take Pride in Hemlock" is spreading through this hamlet year-round. Keep up the great work! Grateful! What an amazing outpouring of folks who came to the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock for the free trees, shrubs, and plants giveaway on April 23rd! (Perhaps 100+ came early.) A big thank you to Tawn Feeney for purchasing the seedlings and handing them out in celebration of Earth Day. A number of people who didn't receive the giveaway came inside the Center for the first time and learned about what is offered here for them. Shameful It is a shame that the ship named after the Sullivan’s war heroes is in the disarray that it is. I can’t understand how a ship of one of the most powerful nations in the world could be let go to the point of sinking at the Navel Yard. This is a slap in the face to all Veterans and moreover the heroes it was named after and the ones who served on this ship. I am a Vietnam Vet, and I am appalled that this could happen. It is bad enough that Veterans have to wait 40 years to get a disability rating when pushed out of the service. Someone should be [held accountable] for the way this ship has ended up. Forgetfulness It appears to me that many people have forgotten how production all over the world seemed to come to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. These shutdowns caused shortages in many products, and thus prices for those products rose. These people also seem to have forgotten the backup in the ports that prevented shipments from getting to the marketplace, which also helped to cause shortages. I believe most of our economic problems can be traced directly to COVID. Be patient. Things will get better, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sensitivity please! To the woman who saw my father’s work van at my house and called his employer to try to report him for “goofing off.” His employer is very aware of his whereabouts and the fact that, unlike someone like you who always has access to bathroom facilities and a kitchen, he may be entitled to a break. May your husband and children always be entitled to the same considerations. In addition, my dad had just completed a messy job around the block from you. (Yes, we know you called!) He was unable to clean himself up thoroughly afterwards, as you would have been able to do in a home or office building. So, a convenient quick stop at his daughter’s house to use her facilities allowed him to, among other things, make himself more presentable before his next call and get water to go. I hope that if your loved ones have blue collar jobs one day, you will have gained more sensitivity to these issues. I would have addressed you in person, but I am much too angry, and I want others to be aware, as well.

Canandaigua Mom Vanessa Talks Motherhood & Supporting Fellow Moms BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s many moms can attest, motherhood can be both a wonderful adventure and an incredible challenge. One of the most valuable assets a mother can have is a strong and caring support system. Vanessa Samuels, Canandaigua mom and manager of the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua, shares some of her new mom realizations as well as how meaningful it is to be able to support other moms. Samuels and her husband moved to the Canandaigua/Ontario area in the fall of 2018. Samuels was expecting their first child, and the couple decided to move closer to her family. Their daughter, Jordyn, was born that winter. Much as it has been for many women, new motherhood was a revelation. “Holy cow! I just don’t feel like you can totally fathom how much work a mom actually does!” exclaimed Samuels. She says that although she has always had a wonderful relationship with her mom, she now appreciates all her mother’s hard work so much more. “[Motherhood] has given me a newfound appreciation of what moms do and go through,” Samuels explained. “How did my mom provide a meal for us every night, keep the house clean, and keep us all bathed?!” Perhaps, like many of us, you know the struggle all too well. As Samuels opines, there is so much no one ever tells you about becoming a mom. “I think you can never be prepared enough to be a mom,” she said. “There are many challenges involved in being a mother. I often found myself asking, ‘Why did no one tell me about this?’” One example Samuels gave came from her days breastfeeding. “I didn’t realize I had to consume more calories while breastfeeding, and my blood sugar dropped terribly. It was another mom who suggested to me that perhaps I should eat during the process. She put together a basket of snacks for me to place beside my nursing station.” The simple act deeply touched Samuels. “It was one of the more profound things that happened. I appreciated just recognizing the beautiful support and the desire to be a part of that in my community.” When Samuels realized she wanted to return to the workforce, this desire was still strong. Then, a friend directed her to the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua. “I started at Care Net in October 2019,” she said. “I would say that a good number of the moms who come to see me visit because they may not have strong support elsewhere.” The opportunity to be a mom helping other moms was just what Samuels was hoping for. “It is such a beautiful thing,” she enthused. “Sometimes, moms come in because they just need a break. Many moms do not get breaks, and that can be especially true for stay-at-home moms. Helping other moms and moms-tobe is such a beautiful experience and not only for them. Providing that safe place, that sanctuary, for them is beautiful for me.” One of Samuels’ favorite ways to help other moms is by taking them to Care Net’s boutique to let Three-year-old Jordyn Samuels introduced mom, Vanessa Samuels, to motherhood!

them “shop” for clothing. “I feel we have great items in our boutique,” she said. If I wouldn’t let my kid wear an item, we don’t keep it. The clothing is quality, and the experience really is like going shopping!” Samuels also enjoys sharing Care Net’s pregnancy classes which can be attended virtually or in-person. “There are over 100 classes on all kinds of topics and answering all kinds of questions,” she explained. “I have also taken several of these classes, and it is fun to hear how other moms are applying what they have learned, as well. New content is always being added, and I believe anyone could benefit from them.” Care Net has given Samuels the opportunity to promote moms helping moms and to form a supportive, local mom community. The nonprofit offers several services, all free and confidential, which include pregnancy tests, pregnancy options and peer counseling, referrals, post-abortion counseling and education (PACE) and parenting classes, among others. COVID, however, saw Care Net meeting additional needs. “COVID was really hard for a lot of people,” observed Samuels. During the height of the pandemic, Care Net saw many moms opening up about domestic violence in their relationships. “We are not officially that service,” she said. “However, it was beautiful to see that these women trust us so much that they feel safe enough to share such a hard part of their lives. We were then able to connect them to the right agencies to get them out of those situations and to give them support.” At the same time, Care Net never stopped supporting them. “We never want to say to the moms that come to us, ‘Okay, we got you here; you’re good,’ and walk away,” said Samuels. “We are here for them starting from the first time they come in, often pregnant and unsure what to do. We work to make sure these moms truly have everything they need. When a mom or dad succeeds, their children succeed, creating generational change. That helps everyone.” When asked her feelings on motherhood thus far, Vanessa Samuels didn’t hesitate. “It is hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We will forever have these beautiful memories that we get to create as a family.”

Janet Dean January 7, 2021 INTERLAKEN: Janet Dean, 85, of Interlaken, N.Y. went be with her Lord on January 7, 2021 with family at her bedside. A Memorial Service for Janet will be held on May 7, 2022 at the 1st Presbyterian Church, 59 West Main St., Shortsville, NY beginning at 4pm. Service to be followed by time of fellowship and meal at the church from 5pm to 6:30pm. Sunset burial at Pioneer Cemetery, Dewey Rd., Manchester, NY at 7pm. Any friend or family of Janet or her family is welcome to join in this celebration of her life and memorial to her love and kindness. Janet was born on January 29, 1935 to Edith Doane and Charles Cox. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Clifton Springs Hospital for 27 years. Retiring early, she moved to Florida to care for her ailing mother, then lived in Skaneateles for 14 years. She had only recently moved in with her youngest daughter. She exemplified her Christian faith in everything she did. The Dean house on Dewey Road was the neighborhood softball field, the cookie jar was always full and toys were for sharing. Janet will be remembered as a gentle and loving mother, friend and neighbor, quick to offer a helping hand, an encouraging word and a heartfelt prayer. Janet is survived by her sister, Joan (David); daughters, Cindy, Theo, Minta (Richard) and Tracy (Andrew); 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews. The Hurlbut Funeral Home, Main Street, Interlaken, is in charge of arrangements.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.
