ASH WEDNESDAY

Automotive ____________________17

The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat.

And Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast rose from the dreams of its wintry rest. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley, “The Sensitive Plant”

Christians believe that Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is comprised of bread and wine, although some denominations believe that it is not necessary to receive the Lord’s body and blood in each, instead feeling that Christ is present fully in either the bread or wine. Catholics believe that through the process of transubstantiation the bread and wine before the priest becomes the body and blood of Christ. According to catechism and the liturgy, as soon as the Institution Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine. The institution of Holy Eucharist occurred during the Last Supper. As stated in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Jesus instructed His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died on the cross for people’s sins. While much fanfare is understandably afforded to First Holy Communion, Christians receive the Eucharist every day at church services all over the world. Receiving communion is not a singular act. People recognized that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Jesus. Adults can reinforce this concept to children by explaining that receiving Communion each week at Mass is just as special as receiving it that first time in spring. Holy Communion is an opportunity to enter into an intimate union with Jesus Christ, who Christians believe provides holiness and grace to all who are willing to receive Him.

Spring is here...

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

Your Hardscape Specialist Since 1946

* A garden manicure is what my mother calls it: When working with plants and dirt, rake your nails across a bar of soap. The soap prevents dirt particles from lodging under nails, and the soap washes away easily when you are finished. Happy Gardening! -- JoAnn * “If you have a spade with a long handle, you can transfer common measurements to the handle. Just lay a tape measure alongside the handle, and use a black marker to note common spacing, like feet and inches. Then, when you put in plants, you can check quickly whether they are spaced correctly. Very handy!” -- P.E. in Arkansas * “Garden tool storage doesn’t have to be hard. Fill a wide mouth bucket with clean sand. Add a half quart or motor oil and stir. Then use the sand to clean and store your garden tools like shovels, rakes or hoes. The sand/oil mixture helps clean the metal surfaces, and the heaviness of the container lets you stick them in the sand without fear of everything falling down, like it would if you leaned them along a wall.” -- E. in North Carolina

* Here’s a recipe for a quickie bird feeder or bath: Flip over a nice-size flower pot, and place the pot’s tray on the top. Fill with seed or water. The birds will thank you -- maybe even by eating some nuisance bugs along with the seed.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians. ELECTRICAL

NEED IT? RENT IT!

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-ityourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Wildlife: Animals and insects can destroy turf roots. Animals or insects may feed on the grass from underneath its surface, compromising the lawn’s ability to procure nutrients and water. Animals like moles or raccoons may feed on grubs in the lawn, and treating for grubs can alleviate torn-up turf.

Why mulch? Mulching can benefit plants around a property in various ways. Many people lay mulch because the mulch helps soil retain moisture in the summer, when temperatures tend to be at their hottest. This can help plants survive summer heat waves. Mulch also can be used to suppress weeds. Weeds, which steal moisture plants need to build strong roots and survive summer, need light to grow. When laid correctly, mulch deprives weeds of the light they need to grow. Organic mulches can even provide homes for crickets and a type of beetle that feed on weed seeds. Mulch also can deter harmful pests depending on the type of mulch homeowners choose. When purchasing mulch, homeowners will have to choose between the aforementioned organic mulch or man-made mulches, which may be made of plastic or rubber. While man-made mulches may repel pests, they also can have adverse effects. Plastic, for example, can heat up in the summer and cause plants to burn. Certain organic mulches can repel insects that can threaten plants. That’s because the majority of organic mulches increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in the soil, and they also increase the presence of helpful insects that do not pose a threat to plant life. Those helpful insects help keep harmful insects at bay. Compost is a type of organic mulch that may attract harmful insects. While that does not mean homeowners should shy away from using compost as mulch, they should know that they may need to employ organic insecticides to combat their unwanted guests. Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks. Page 6

DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN www.newcountrysidefamilyrestaurant.com 17 Clifton Springs Plaza, Clifton Springs 315-462-6651

Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Her Lack of Perspiration Has Reader in a Sweat ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an elderly woman who has never perspired and would like to know why. Heat makes me very sick. I love the outdoors, but can be out only a short while in the warmer weather. No one seems to have an answer for me. -- P.M. ANSWER: The name for the condition of no sweating at all is anhidrosis, and there are several causes. There are rare conditions people are born with. These are a possibility, since you have never perspired. However, nearly all of these rare diseases have other significant symptoms you don’t mention. Damage to sweat glands can be seen in autoimmune diseases and diseases that can destroy sweat glands. None of these is likely, as they too have additional symptoms you would have identified during your life. Likewise, you don’t mention medications, which may have lack of sweating as a side effect. I suspect you don’t have a diagnosable disease but rather that you are on the far end of the normal range for sweating (this would be called hypohidrosis). Just as there are people who get drenched with sweat in mildly warm weather, there are some who sweat very little. Since sweating is a major way of keeping cool, you are at higher risk for heat injury, including heatstroke. Avoiding hot weather, as it sounds like you’ve done, is wise. Sun protection (e.g., wearing a wide-brimmed hat) is also wise, as is making sure you have enough fluids. Avoiding excess heat becomes even more important as you get older, since an older person has less ability to adapt to heat than a younger person.

Gum disease: Gum disease may start with mild inflammation and then become more severe if it is left untreated. The inflammation also may affect the ligament that attaches teeth to the socket in the jaw. This ligament has many nerve fibers. When inflamed, the nerves can get fired up and cause pain.

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES (NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.” Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.

I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.

3.

I can’t afford it—You probably can. People are surprised when they find out how affordable life insurance can be. While having a child brings lots of new expenses, life insurance should be at the top of that list so that your child’s plans for the future can stay on track even if the worst were to happen.

4.

My life could change—Not to worry. Whether you change jobs, have more children, welcome your parents back under your roof or need to pay for college, your life insurance plan can change, too. A professional life insurance agent can help you build a strategy that provides the flexibility you need.

Puzzle Answers This Week

CITIES ALONG THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL

Choosing the right type of life insurance depends on your needs. For example, term life insurance is a good place to start if your needs are temporary or short term. It offers affordable coverage for a set period of time. If your needs are long term, a permanent policy (most commonly whole life) might be the best option. In addition to the insurance protection, you build up cash value within the policy that grows on a tax-deferred basis and, if structured properly, can be accessed tax-free. If needed, the cash value can be accessed via loans to help pay for a child’s education or any other important financial need (though loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and death benefit). You may find that a combination of permanent and term insurance is best for you. To start planning for your family’s future, visit the Agent Locator at www. newyorklife.com. EASTER SYMBOLISM COMPLEMENTS THE HOLIDAY Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special. Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hard-boiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of fasting and penance became a way to celebrate Easter. The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to give new life to people after death. In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season. The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb. Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection. The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were originally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all - the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.” Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

2

Moose are powerful swimmers.

A moose can dive 20 feet under water and stay under water for up to 30 seconds! They can also swim fairly fast considering their size: up to six miles an hour. Moose hair 3 is hollow, which helps them stay afloat while swimming or while eating. It also helps to keep moose warm in the winter.

The smartphone app GasBuddy can help drivers find the cheapest gas near them, while an app like AroundMe helps travelers find the nearest restaurants, pharmacies, banks, gas stations, and hotels, among other things. And don’t forget to download a music app like Pandora or Amazon Music (available to Amazon Prime subscribers) so you and your fellow road warriors can be entertained as you travel far and wide.

MAKE EASTER EGGS LAST Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Avoid Predatory Loans From Some Pet Stores DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an article about a predatory lender that is targeting people buying dogs at some pet stores. These loans have insane interest rates as high as 130% to 189%! Please warn your readers to avoid taking out high-interest loans to buy a new pet. So many pets are in shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Don’t buy from a puppy mill! -Janie F., Sarasota, Florida

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On April 11, 1988, actress and singer Cher collects the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in “Moonstruck” (1988). Cherilyn Sarkasian first became famous as the taller, female half of the 1960s singing duo Sonny and Cher.

DEAR JANIE: Thank you for sounding the alarm! A recent CBS News report warned about a lending business called EasyPay Finance that charges huge interest rates. Find the article here: https://tinyurl. com/26b8mdcz/ Predatory loans and pet stores that source from puppy mills are a nasty storm of awfulness. Often, puppy mill dogs arrive at the store in poor condition, and new owners who’ve just paid thousands of dollars to buy a dog now have to shell out thousands more for medical care. The message here is clear: Don’t take out a high-interest loan to buy a pet. If you spend time researching the perfect dog for your family, then you should also spend time studying the financial aspects of dog ownership. Do business with reputable breeders -- you should be able to visit the breeder and see the conditions your prospective pet lives in, meet the puppies and their mother, and discuss their care. Good breeders care about their dogs’ welfare. If you’re going to pay thousands of dollars for a pet, choose this route. Shelter pets are another option. If you aren’t breed-specific but want a wonderful companion, contact the local shelter. Adoption fees are a few hundred dollars, but that is significantly less than what puppy mills are charging. And you’ll get a healthy dog that’s ready for a new family. It’s a win-win. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Breaking News Alert! Turn Off the Television I learned a lesson this week when I discovered I’d spent over 10 hours glued to the news on television. Afterward, I was depressed and full of anxiety. I knew that couldn’t be good for me. It makes sense that a gym chain turned off the TVs in their locations in 27 states, believing that cable news wasn’t good for a healthy lifestyle. And this was several years ago, when the news was comparatively milder than it is now. Consider how much different our lives -- and the news -- are today, and it makes a lot of sense to avoid an overdose of what’s going on in the world. My newest tactic is to use a timer. At the top of the hour, I’ll turn on a cable news channel, watch for several minutes ... and then turn it off. Whatever is new will be talked about then, but it’s often a repeat of the top of the previous hour. What do we do instead once we turn off the news? Change to a different channel, perhaps one that shows re-runs from a previous era. The “Andy Griffith Show” comes to mind. So do “My Three Sons,” “I Love Lucy” and “Columbo.” Then there’s premium fare like The History Channel, Smithsonian Channel and even best of British TV channels. Or we can turn the television off altogether and, now that spring is here, go outside and walk. Or start a new garden. Or talk to neighbors who are also escaping the television. There are specific health reasons to get away from the television news, and sitting too long is at the top of the list. It leads to memory decline, anxiety, stress ... which leads to insomnia and changes in diet. We think we need to keep up with current events ... but at what cost? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. Daily exercise can improve mood, promote an active lifestyle and reduce a person’s risk for a host of ailments, including diabetes and heart disease. Despite the importance of exercise, many people live sedentary lifestyles into their golden years. Seniors who want to embrace a healthier way of life and get more physically active should first consult with their physicians before beginning an exercise regimen. Certain medications may limit just how far seniors can push themselves, while preexisting conditions may make specific types of exercise off limits. After discussing their limitations with their physicians and developing a safe exercise routine, seniors can avoid injury but still get healthy.

Popular sport s f or seniors: Sw im m ing: A few laps around a pool w orks your w hole body. Sw imming is attractive to seniors because it w orks the muscles and provides a cardiovascular jolt w ithout putting any strain on the joints.

CREATIVE WAYS FOR SMALL TOWN RESIDENTS TO GIVE BACK Giving back to one’s community is a great way for men and women to make use of their talents and foster strong towns and cities. Volunteering opportunities abound in big cities, but small town residents may not have as many options as they look for ways to give back.

Clifton Springs Library 4 Railroad Avenue • Clifton Springs, NY 315-462-7371 • cliftonspringslibrary.com

Small town residents looking to give back may need to create their own opportunities if the options available to them do not suit their fancies. Contact local schools. Teachers, afterschool caregivers and coaches can always use some helping hands. Contact local schools to determine if there is any way to help out. Prospective volunteers might be able to read to young children, serve as assistant coaches for youngsters’ sports teams or even help tend to playing fields. Small town school budgets tend to be stretched thin, so chances are local educators will welcome citizens looking to pitch in with open arms.

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Start a program through your place of employment. Another way for small town residents to give back to their communities is to begin a mentoring or internship program through their places of employment. Once their employers give the go-ahead, men and women can begin working with local high schools and/or colleges to develop programs that encourage youngsters to gain professional experience that can benefit them as they apply to college or graduate school or prepare to begin their own careers. Start a volunteering group. Small town residents without much access to volunteering programs can organize groups through their offices or neighborhoods. Organize groups willing to pitch in with charities such as Habitat for Humanity®. Group leaders can arrange transportation to work sites for members of the group while working as liaisons between their community groups and the organizations they choose to work with. Work with area hospitals. Similar to school districts, many hospitals would struggle to meet their missions of providing compassionate care if not for the contributions of volunteers. Contact area hospitals to learn about volunteering. Some may need volunteers to read to sick children, while others may need help keeping elderly patients company. Small town residents may not have a wealth of volunteering opportunities at their disposal. But with a little creativity, such men and women can still give back to their communities.

Thank you! We would like to thank Dr. Fischer & staff at Perry Pet in Livonia for their kindness & compassion when we took our beloved Tali in during an emergency visit last week. Although their schedule was full, Dr. Fischer took time to answer all our questions & offer all of our options for treatment. Although the outcome was not what we had hoped for, we will be forever grateful for their caring. We are so fortunate to have this facility in our area. Joan & Jim Briggs

Shopping fear Recently I was at local [store] In line behind a couple that stole items under their coats in shopping cart, even had a small duffle bag on bottom rack full of who knows what?? I watched the cashier as she made a choice to keep quiet about it, and then realized that I was alone shopping and I should keep quiet as well, out of fear. I think Covid gave us all a heavy dose of fear that will linger for a good long time. Shame on us to be driven to silence out of fear. Woke bullies, dishonest people, are all whining, self absorbed pitiful creatures. Why do they feel so entitled? Maybe because of silent little mice like you and me, just working hard, minding our own business while the spoiled brats take over our world. I don’t want to die over a stolen bag of donuts, but I’d like to be proud of my own reflection in the mirror. Fear sucks

Pick up the poo! If you have a dog and are going to take that dog out for a walk, please bring your doggy poop bags! I saw a woman allow her dog to poop on my front lawn. Then, she walked away without picking it up. How irresponsible! Now, I have to clean up her dog's poop or risk stepping in it. Please pick up after your pets!

Happy Lights! Thank you to the people on the corner in Mumford with the rainbow lights. It makes me happy to drive through town. It's a refreshing change from the daily negativity. Thanks for supporting everyone!

Was that the Easter Bunny? BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

don’t know how it happened, but Easter came and went faster than a twitch of the Easter Bunny’s whiskers. It didn’t help that the holiday came early this year, either. Just out of March, people hardly had the chance to sniff the April air before candy, colored eggs, and chicks filled their homes. For many, Easter is a time of great religious importance. It is a time of reflection, tradition, and rejuvenation. Today, the busyness of modern life, from work to family to social obligations, can overshadow this traditional downtime of the soul. Whether or not Easter holds particular significance to those celebrating it, most enjoy its restful respite, a much-needed break from the stresses of everyday life. Ready for a spring refresh? Try one (or all) of our 5-minute activities for introspection and mindfulness. 1. Give more hugs. We’re serious! Hugs are one of the most powerful, grounding, natural stress relievers loved ones can give to each other. (Of course, be thoughtful about whom you hug, considering safety, and be certain not to choose those whom it would most likely be inappropriate to hug, such as coworkers or strangers.) For this activity, hug your loved one three times in a row. For each hug, take three deep breaths or count to twenty. This lengthier embrace releases oxytocin, a hormone that can improve your outlook, lower your blood pressure, and reduce your heart rate. 2. Declutter a specific spot. Clutter in one’s workspace and living space all too often translates to clutter in one’s mind and semiconscious, which can have emotional repercussions. Decluttering a whole home, room, or even workspace can be very overwhelming. Instead, choose one specific space and set a 5-minute timer. Take a moment to consider each item before you give it space or throw it away. Imagine these items belong to a stranger. What story do all the items tell? Is this a story you are satisfied with, or is it time to change a few things? This third person perspective can offer some surprises.

3. Take a short self-assessment. A brief personal assessment, such as Adult Wellness Compass Self-Assessment by Samaritan Family Wellness, is a great way to check in on your well-being. The assessment divides your personal wellness into four categories: Heart (relationships & emotions), Soul (spirituality & rest and play), Mind (vocation & organization), and Strength (care for body & resilience). It is easy to get so busy caring for others and fulfilling obligations that we forget to ensure our own reserves are regularly being replenished. As this assessment aptly observed, such evaluations simply help you recognize which parts of your metaphorical garden could use a little more “watering.”

4. Unplug and center yourself. Nearly every guide for self-assessment and renewal includes elements of meditation and escaping ever-present screens. They may have a point. Consider setting aside five minutes for unplugged reflection at the beginning of each day. Not only does this give you a centered space from which to order and launch your day, but it also guarantees you at least one quiet moment no matter what the day may bring. 5. Spice things up with something new. One of the best parts of “out with the old” is “in with the new!” Think about adding a new hobby to your skill set, pursing a new interest, making new friends, or even just changing up your everyday routine by arranging your tasks in a new pattern, such as taking your trash out before dinner rather than afterwards. These changes keep your mind active, and they also encourage you to evaluate the things you already have in your life. Springtime is a time for taking stock, cleaning out the unnecessary, experiencing rebirth, and embracing new life. If this traditional time for reflection and renewal has also slipped by you at the speed of light, it’s not too late to grab a few mindful moments in the spirit of the season. Happy Easter! ° µ ¾ À À ¾ É Ì Ñ Ò Ì Ñ ÒÓ À

HOLY THURSDAY Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

CAREGIVERS, TAKE CARE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAREGIVING DUTIES FROM OVERWHELMING YOU (NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey. To learn more about the latest technology helping to ease caregivers’ burdens, visit https://philips. to/2MGDqLm or call (855) 223-7395
