DID YOU KNOW?
According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.
Air travel: Transportation abroad undoubtedly will be one of the largest expenses travelers incur. Check prices from multiple airports in your area for the best rates, even if it means having to drive a bit further. If you have only one local airport, book a separate flight to a travel hub, such as Atlanta or New York, so you can comparison shop more affordable flights to your final destination.

Spring Tire Maintenance
Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far this spring and summer without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist.
Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate a little. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy.
Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned at the very least. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road.
Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires.

BECOMING MORE ATTRACTIVE TO AUTO LENDERS
It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms.
Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes.
Improving credit score: Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan.
Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk.
The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus.
Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports.
Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following:
• Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.com.
• Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans.
• Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky.
• Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time.
Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.

Hats off and a big thank you to the park staff and volunteers that maintain the miles of trails in Northhampton Park. With the many windstorms, and numerous dead ash trees, it has been quite a chore clearing trails so that the park hikers are able to enjoy their time in the park safely. You are appreciated!

Thank you volunteer organizations
I’d just like to give a quick shout-out to all the volunteer non-profit organizations out there doing great things for their communities. Whether it be picking up trash along trails, keeping fire hydrants clear of debris, helping to keep food pantry shelves stocked/organized, collecting items for animal shelters and beyond... THANK YOU!

Some Home Owners
Home owners that have abandoned swimming pools in their back yard are probably breeding mosquitos. Some form of wildlife could fall into it and not be able to get out. Of course some folks just have no pride in what their property looks like. Just sayin....
Missing Front License Plates
Why do so many vehicles with NY license plates on the back now not have front license plates? (This is especially true of Teslas, which Elon Musk doesn’t bother to build with a front license plate holder, but also plenty of other vehicles.) Did NY eliminate the requirement of a front plate without telling the rest of us? Or is this just another example of people thinking the rules only apply to others? The Thruway might be able to avoid a toll increase if they were allowed to charge fines to all of the vehicles passing through their toll cameras that have NY rear plates but no front plate!
Disrespectful
I sure hope that the mowers at a local cemetery are held accountable for destroying flowers that were left at graves. Destroyed flowers were spread by the mower and left. How could anyone do that!

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS
Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.
DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds.Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper
Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers.
Second-hand items: Check wiring and extension cords for wear and damage. In particular, look for worn insulation and splices on the cord and loose or exposed parts on the plug.
Leaving An Estate To Charity
One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed.
When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

Exercise Builds Strength and Improves Limits in Those With Arthritis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I so appreciated your recent column on arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. I’m a big exerciser; however, I have always heard that this arthritis is caused or exacerbated by wear and tear. I was surprised to hear otherwise!
I have modified or given up a handful of exercises that seem to cause my joints more pain, specifically fullbody weight-bearing on my wrists. Are these exercises I can incorporate back into my routine? I have found that certain activities, i.e. card shuffling, buttoning, etc., hurt my thumbs, so I have made adaptations. Should I work through the pain, assuming that I am not causing any more damage to my joints? -- L.D.
ANSWER: Most exercise is not damaging to joints, but high-impact or high-frequency activities can certainly worsen arthritis pain.
For arthritis of the knees and hips, I recommend walking as the best exercise, starting slow and building up based on what a person can tolerate. It’s the movement, not the resistance, that’s most important, so swimming (or just walking in a pool) is a great option for people who feel too much pain from walking.
For the smaller joints of the hands and wrists, I would recommend activities that don’t hurt you as much. Stretching the joints and movements like squeezing are a good place to start. You might consider a “stress ball” or a hand therapy ball to provide some resistance and build up hand strength.
Adapting your activities to your limitations is a good idea, but you also want to work on improving those limitations. A physical or occupational therapist is your best partner in designing a program.
Don’t forget that over-the-counter topical antiinflammatory medicines, like diclofenac, are pretty effective with small joints and are very safe.
***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

WHAT IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME?
Stomachpains, bloatingandtrouble with digestion affect people on occasion, particularly after a rich and heavy meal. However, when symptomsofgastrointestinalupset are prolonged or occur frequently, it may be a sign of irritable bowel syndrome, alsocalledIBS.
IBS, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea or constipation, bloating, and more. Between 3 and 20 percent of Americans experience IBS symptoms, and the condition affects more women than men. Whilesomepeoplemayexperience minor, manageable symptoms, others may deal with side effects thataffecttheirdailylives.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease says doctors are not sure what causes IBS. Muscle contractions in the intestine that are stronger than normal can play a role. In addition, the Mayo Clinic notes that abnormalities in the nerves that impact the digestive system can cause greater than normal discomfort from the abdomen stretching from gas or stool. As a result, poorly coordinated signals betweenthebrainandtheintestines can cause the body to overreact. Furthermore, inflammation and changes in gut microflora also can playrolesinIBS.
Doctors will look for a certain patterns in symptoms to rule out otherconditionsbeforediagnosing IBS. Women who experience IBS tend to have symptoms around the time of menstruation, or they may have more symptoms during this time, offersthehealthandwellness guide Healthline. Symptoms may betriggeredbyhormones.
A series of treatments is typically prescribed to help people with IBS experience less discomfort. Individuals may have to avoid certain foods and beverages. Increased stress can lead to flareups of IBS, so finding ways to reduce stress also is key. Routine exercise, eating small meals and takingprobioticsalsomaygoalong waytowardtamingIBSsymptoms.
The symptoms of IBS are unpleasant but manageable. Men and women with intestinal issues are urged to bring those issues to theattentionoftheirphysicians.

Kick Start Spring With A Finished Basement
An unfinished basement is a source of energy loss in many homes. By simply finishing the space with wall and floor coverings, you will notice a difference on your energy bills. A remodeled basement offers more than additional storage and living space. It can provide room for a growing family or a space where you can retreat for some privacy.
Insulation is a key component in making your basement look and feel comfortable, inviting and dry. For the best results, install a rigid board insulation against the concrete foundation before you stud the wall. The board is mechanically fastened or adhered to the concrete foundation wall, preventing thermal bridging through the studs, offering a higher R-value and better thermal performance.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them indoors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the giant “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie waterpark when they are done. -- M.E. in Ohio
* Finding a summer camp for your kids can be a chore. Check with your child’s school and school friends for recommendations. Also, see if your city’s recreation department is holding any camps. Some county extension offices (agriculture department) offer camps. Many of these are reasonably priced. Check into them now.
* I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps not spill water. Pour slowly! -- P.T. in Illinois
THE SCIENCE OF HURRICANES
While strong winds can cause significant damage, the aftereffects of a hurricane, such as storm surge and heavy rains, also can cause serious issues. That’s why scientists carefully monitor weather systems, utilizing satellites in an effort to predict when these storms will form.

Preventing Ear Infections in Dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd puppy, Max, seems to get an ear infection every other week. He’s miserable, shaking his head from side to side. And he hates having ear drops put in -- a job that gets more di cult the larger he gets! How can I stop the constant ear infections? --
Betsy J., Syracuse, New York
* To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put meat, vegetables, fruit and peelings in a bread bag, and put it in the freezer until you take it outside for the garbage collector. -- E.L. in Virginia
* Keep fast-food coupons in your car’s glove compartment. They will be there if you need to go to a drive-through, and will be handy for picking up dinner on the way home. If you need them at home, chances are your car is there anyway! -- F.D. in Alabama
* Got paper recycling? More and more schools are using paper recycling as a means to fundraise. Don’t have a kid in school? Drive by and look for a dumpster or bin that’s labeled. Odds are good you might find one. If you don’t, ask!
DEAR BETSY: Dogs can be very prone to ear infections. e shape of their ear canal is the most likely reason. Allergies and ear mites vie for the title of top irritant in a pet’s ear canal.
e symptoms are probably very familiar to you. Dark discharge from the ears, accompanied by an unusual, dank odor, frequent head shaking, scratching at the ears, and perhaps some scabbing of the outer ear. A veterinarian can pinpoint redness and swelling inside the ear canal as well.
Treatment should always start at the veterinarian’s o ce. ere, cleaning and disinfection of the ear will be done, and then your dog will likely be prescribed medication -- typically eardrops -- to be administered for up to 10 days. A er treatment is complete, you’ll want to prevent future infections by gently cleaning Max’s ears with an ear cleaning solution for dogs and cotton balls (not Q-tips).
Getting a big dog to hold still for treatment can be a struggle. Here’s one method: If he’s very reactive, try to stand over Max with one leg on each side and his head facing forward, away from you. Hold him under his muzzle and apply the medication or cleaning solution to one ear and massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds. Let go of his muzzle and allow him to shake his head. Repeat on the other side. Finish by gently swiping the ear canal with cotton balls.

Heavy Li ing of Pet Ownership
For seniors, there are several questions that arise when we consider whether we should adopt another pet a er the death of a long-loved companion. ere’s the scary thought of potential veterinary bills or whether we should own a dog that needs to be walked every day. Or maybe we think of adopting a young cat who will likely outlive us or an elderly cat who probably won’t.
I rmly believe, however, that when it comes to deciding about adopting a pet that the biggest potential problem comes down to heavy li ing.
e rule of four, I call it: ere are four likely scenarios wherein, without intervention or assistance, heavy li ing is required.
For the economical 40-pound bag of dog chow, I would need to li it into the shopping cart, put it on the conveyor belt at checkout, get it into the car and once home, get it into the house. at’s four li ings.
is applies to even the 20-pound jug of cat litter. I do the math: 4 times 20 equals 80 pounds I’d be li ing without interventions.
Interventions can take the shape of a strong teenage boy angel who happens to walk by in the pet supplies aisle; a store clerk who gets down cat litter from a very high shelf; checkouts with a radar gun on a stretchy cord that will reach to the cart to scan the bar code; and big neighbors who happen to be strolling by just as I’m pulling in my driveway.
Without luck, however, there have been too many times when all four li ings have been required. I su er the next day.
I have decided to cut my pet-related li ing down to none. I have signed up for home delivery at two stores, never mind the expense. It’s worth every penny to see other people walk up my driveway carrying the heavy items, fully appreciative of the fact that I don’t have to do any li ing whatsoever.

Popular sports for seniors: Cycling: Many seniors are avid cyclists. You can ride a bicycle in competition or for pleasure. You can even vary your route depending on how physically intense you want the ride to be.
ELDER CARE RESOURCES
At the local level in the United States, the federal government has mandated Area Agency on Aging (www.n4a.org) facilities in every county/city. These agencies can provide information on service programs available to the seniors in the area, as well as financial resources. These facilities give seniors access to volunteers who can take seniors around by car, and some provide meals-on-wheels services.
Better Function in Bathrooms
Often when people develop mobility or dexterity issues, they find their existing bathrooms are not in a convenient location in the house, or aren’t configured with safety in mind. They may need to add a bathroom in a small space or reconfigure the ones they have. When renovating an existing bath or creating a new bathroom where one did not previously exist, homeowners should keep key considerations in mind.
Multiple light sources can help reduce glare and shadows - two dangerous visual effects in bathrooms, where most home falls occur. Flooring material should be slip-resistant and grab bars are essential in showers, bath tubs and near toilets. Shower heads should be on a slide bar that allows the spray to be raised or lowered depending on the needs and height of the user. Showers and faucets should be controlled by levers, rather than knobs, and all showers should have thermostatic controls to reduce the risk of burns.
Whether you’re adding a half bath in a corner of your master bedroom where no bathroom existed before, or replacing a high step-over tub with a roll-in shower, traditional plumbing can be costly - especially in homes with slab foundations and no readily accessible below-floor drainage. Saunders uses the Sanigrind Pro system by Saniflo to minimize the need to break through concrete. The product can handle drainage for a shower, sink and toilet. For more information, visit www.saniflo.com.

An Ounce of Prevention: Protect Yourself from Lyme Disease and Other Tick-borne Illnesses
BY SUZIE WELLS
Ticks are insects that potentially carry and transmit devastating illnesses, such as Lyme disease, which can cause joint swelling and sti ness, facial palsy, severe headaches, and neck pain if le untreated. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, so I want to share about the disease and its prevention.
In 2016, I was bitten by a Lyme-infected deer tick and am thankful for antibiotics to allow quick recovery and no lasting e ects. rough awareness and small, preventive choices, we can help reduce the transmission and infection of Lyme and other illnesses.
Lyme Disease is one of the most common diseases transmitted by ticks, a hitchhiking insect that consumes human and animal blood during each of its life stages. According to the Ontario County Public Health report, the number of Lyme cases “has increased as the bacterium that causes it has become more prevalent in tick populations across Western NY.”
According to Rochester Clinical Research (RCR), one of our local research facilities, in the U.S., about 476,000 people contract Lyme disease annually. According to tickcheck, annual estimated cases in Ontario County run about 2,590 and Monroe County estimates 6,000. at’s each year! ankfully, treatments for early identi ed cases typically prevent life-altering e ects, but still, numbers are staggering, and as the adage goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Ticks live in grassy, brushy, wooded areas. Tick exposure can occur year-round, though ticks are most active in warmer months. Adult ticks are o en easier to spot than nymphs / larvae. O en, we don’t see ticks until they’ve begun feasting on the human or animal host. At that point, the tick may have been embedded for hours or even a couple of days. When they nish feasting, they drop o and move on with their lives.
Ticks transfer by direct contact only; they can neither jump nor y. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), ticks sense body heat, moisture, and vibrations, and rest on the tips of grasses and shrubs, awaiting a host animal. When a host brushes past, the tick climbs aboard, either attaching quickly to feast or wandering to seek thinner, more protected skin.
Prevention Tips from the CDC, NY Department of Health, and RCR:
• Avoid tall grasses without insect repellent / treatment. My family has a hill covered in tall grass we simply avoid during “tick season,” whenever temperatures are above freezing.
• Wear light-colored clothing to easily spot ticks. Wear enclosed shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirts into pants whenever possible. Treat clothing, boots, and gear with products containing permethrin.
• To avoid insect bites, wear insect repellent, stay on cleared, welltraveled trails, avoid sitting directly on the ground or on stone walls, and keep long hair tied back, especially when gardening.
• Check clothes and exposed skin for ticks while outdoors and again once you come indoors, as ticks may ride on clothes/gear, then attach to the host later. Launder potentially infected clothes on high heat to kill ticks.
• Do a full-body “tick check” when you come inside.
• Shower within two hours of coming indoors to remove unattached ticks and reduce the risk of Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses.
• To help prevent ticks in your yard, clear leaf litter, keep grasses mowed, place a barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawn and wooded areas to restrict tick migration into recreational areas, and keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees.
If you nd a tick on a human or pet: Use clean tweezers to grip the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady pressure. Do not squeeze, twist, or jerk the tick. Remove mouthparts le embedded. If you cannot remove the mouth easily, leave it and the skin will heal and repel the parts. A er removing the tick, clean the site with soapy water or rubbing alcohol. Dispose of the tick without touching it with your skin. If you develop a rash or fever within a few weeks of removing the tick, contact your doctor.
A er my Lyme infection in 2016, I discovered my neighbor is Medical Director at Rochester Clinical Research, where they conduct clinical trials of vaccine studies. I quickly signed up for the adult Lyme vaccine study and found the study easy and fairly painless (I’m not a fan of
