Compromised cooling fans or lack of coolant can be troublesome. To avoid overheating, check coolant levels before getting on the road. In addition, have the cooling system checked by a trained mechanic prior to the summer driving season. It’s a small price to pay to avoid extensive engine damage from overheating.

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE Encourage agriculture-based curriculum. After recognizing that the majority of Kenyan students had no access to farming training and education, the organization Farm Africa initiated a program to make agriculture more accessible to students. Students who participated learned about everything from keeping livestock to marketing produce for global markets. Similar programs can be encouraged in developed countries where opportunities in the field of agriculture figure to increase in the years to come. AUTOMOTIVE

ELECTRICAL

NEED IT? RENT IT!

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-ityourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Gardeners Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. Thanks. I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out. But common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground, and is difficult to remove. I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time. Common field milkweed, Asclepius syriaca, serves as both a preferred host plant (where these butterflies lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars feed) and a nectar source for adults. That’s why people encourage planting this specific plant.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County But Monarchs can use other types of milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens. They are more attractive and will not spread invasively like common milkweed. The article from the University of Vermont at the following link offers many details about monarchs and milkweed. https://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/articles/ monarch.html Our one-acre lawn is overrun with Creeping Charlie, and it is spreading daily. Is there a way to combat it without killing off the grass we’d like to save? Glechoma hederacea, better known as Creeping Charlie and ground ivy, is one of the most common and unfortunately hard to control lawn and garden weeds. A healthy lawn will help prevent creeping Charlie from getting established. Over-seeding bare spots in a lawn with an appropriate grass seed

will help crowd out the weed. Another strategy is to mow at a height of 3 inches. This allows grass to have healthier roots and blades as well as shade out weed seedlings. Hand weeding can be difficult and frustrating due to the fact that there are roots at many of the leaf nodes. If the soil is moist and you are careful to dig the roots, you will be more successful. Weeding them from garden beds is a lot easier. Removing them as soon as they show up is the key to success. A hoe, rake or dethatching tool can be helpful. If a herbicide is required, studies have shown that spring and fall are the best times to apply. More than a single season application may be needed. During the heat of the summer, plants are not growing as fast and not as susceptible to the effect of herbicides. These herbicides are directed at broadleaf plants, not grass, so are not likely useful in gardens or harmful to the grass. Lawn herbicides with multiple active ingredients are most effective against difficult to control weeds. Products that con-

tain triclopyr, such as Ortho Weed-B-Gon Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer have proven effective. So has Ortho Weed-B-Gon Max plus Crabgrass Control with quinclorac. Other brand products are available. Read the label for listed controls and application directions. Some information from http://erie.cce.cornell.edu/ resources/article-42-creeping-charlie-may-2017

Pet in Car

S E V RA

To the couple in a [local town] convenience store who were concerned that a dog was left alone inside a car: you looked as you walked by, but with shaded windows you couldn’t see inside. You even went into the store, and an employee asked around about who owns the car. My wife told her I was inside. I was sitting in the back seat with our pet. THANK YOU, to the couple and the store employee, for taking the initiative.

Stupid Idea On this morning’s news was the report of another mass shooting in a school in Texas. It was suggested by someone, who I believe must have stock in one of the gun-producing companies, that teachers carry guns. Great. That means that there would be more guns that can fall into the hands of someone who should never have access to a gun, such as the young man who killed all those children and teachers in Texas. I wish that there would never be another incident like what was on the news, but if it should happen again, it might prove to be best if all the victims were family members of those who are against gun control. Maybe that would change their thinking on the need for even greater gun control measures than have ever yet been presented to Congress. Public Obscenity The 1st Amendment states that obscenity is not protected under the rights to free speech. No one has a right to tell everyone in society, regardless of age, to f*** off! Little children are being forced to believe this is acceptable? Come on, folks. Speak up! Call your town’s supervisor and demand action. It is a community that sets the standard according to the federal obscenity laws, so let’s unite and set a better standard for our community. Our town has an ordinance against marijuana sales. We can do the same thing for vulgar, profane displays in yards. Remember the frog in the frying pan? We are not so desensitized that we accept being told [this] every time we drive down our main road, are we? The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, but you can do something. Please speak up!

Change it back! “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” That is the Second Amendment in our Constitution. It exists not because of hunting, or defending against foreign attack. The founders feared a standing army would present a clear and present danger to individual liberty: in other words, government tyranny. Guns are a necessary fabric to the security of a free state. Stereotyping I was taught stereotyping is morally and ethically wrong. I still believe that. Why is stereotyping in the media acceptable, and nobody seems to speak out? With a population of 300 million plus, Police Officers nationwide are “walking on eggshells” because of a few bad cops. Now, because one individual carrying out a horrific hate crime, [many] across our country are being stereotyped as racist and supremacist. In both examples, these crimes have been horrific and carried out by bad individuals. We need to stop the stereotyping all around. Stereotyping makes relations worse.

EARLY TREATMENT KEY TO MANAGING SEASONAL DISEASES IN CATTLE (NAPSI) — Two of the more common production-impacting health issues cattlemen see in their herds this time of year are foot rot and pinkeye. Left untreated, each can lead to more serious, chronic health problems.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

‘Hip Hold’ Is No Way to Stretch Your Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My wife likes to pick up our dog’s hind legs to help him stretch; that is, she holds Cheerio by the hips so his hind legs are up off the ground while he stands on his front legs. I thought I read once that this is not good and strains the dog’s joints or back or something. Your advice would be appreciated. -- Zina J. DEAR ZINA: The “hip hold” is a safety grip to pull your dog away from a fight with another dog. It’s not a hold that should be forced or held for long periods. Stretching should be performed by owners when the dog’s joints are not weighted -- meaning the dog should not be standing or leaning on the leg being stretched. Holding Cheerio up by his hindquarters and forcing him to brace on his front legs puts him at greater risk for injury. It can cause great pain in older dogs with arthritis. If your wife would truly like to keep Cheerio’s joints healthy and improve his overall circulation and well-being, there are some great safe stretching methods, and safe massage techniques as well. Here’s a YouTube video of safe dog stretching exercises by a veterinary therapist: tinyurl.com/4ay7sfjc. Notice that at no point does the therapist stretch a joint that the dog is standing on -- they are all unweighted stretches. Dogs also stretch themselves frequently, especially when getting up after a long nap. Don’t try to assist their natural stretching -- dogs stretch in a way that’s comfortable for them. Therapeutic stretching and massage are designed to help facilitate a dog’s natural movement without placing stress on the joints. If you have more questions about your dog’s mobility, talk with the vet at his next checkup. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

Foot rot, pinkeye and other common cattle ailments are highly dependent on pasture, weather and other conditions. Foot rot is more problematic when cattle are kept in wet, muddy and manure-heavy lots. Caused by the Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteria, symptoms include swelling and inflammation between the toes, resulting in lameness and reluctance to walk.

Pinkeye is a highly infectious eye condition that can affect cattle of all ages, often on tall-grass pastures and in environmental situations that can irritate the eye. Flies are a major irritant and vector for the disease, so controlling them and other sources of irritant is critical. Delayed treatment of pinkeye can result in loss of the eye, reduced performance and a less marketable animal. Fortunately, with timely surveillance and treatment, these infections, along with other diseases, can be easily and cost-effectively managed by producers with a non-prescription injectable product such as Noromycin 300 LA, a highly concentrated, lowdose, fast-acting formulation of oxytetracycline. Effectively used by cattlemen for many years, it is widely available through most farm and veterinary supply companies. Learn more at www.norbrook.com.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 17, 1972, five men are arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. Senate investigations eventually revealed that President Richard Nixon had been personally involved in the subsequent cover-up of the break-in.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles The Local Food Bank Needs Your Help If you’re on the other side of the fence -- able to donate to the food bank rather than visiting to use its services -- your local pantry can surely use your help. Running them is more complicated and expensive than it might seem! The food bank in my town gets most of its food from the main supplier in the state, which gets its support from philanthropists, business partners, manufacturers, producers, farmers and donors of both food and money. It then distributes food and supplies to the local food banks. The local food bank has to pay for what it receives, of course, with its own supply of cash donors and town support. In addition, there are local businesses that donate leftover breads and bakery items, farmers that bring in fresh produce and frozen meat, and folks in town who donate both cash and food. What food banks typically need: canned vegetables, fruit, soup, stews and beans; pasta, peanut butter and jelly; tuna, cereals and personal-care items like toothpaste and soap. But there are specialty items they need as well, things that are hard for the food banks to get: pet food and lactose-free milk, for example, that are very important to those who need them. (I’ve made it my goal to try to provide some of these items to the food bank each month.) If you’re in a position to help, search online for your local food bank to see what it currently needs, or make a phone call. Ask if it posts on a website or Facebook page. Your best bet, however, might be to donate money. Most food banks have more purchasing power at the store than we do; their dollar goes much further because they don’t pay retail. And they can use those dollars to target the specific needs of their clientele. Ask! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK

By JoAnn Derson

(NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips.

* Add a small bit of boiling water to a glass of iced tea to clear it up if it is cloudy. You can do this to a pitcher just before serving.

• Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

* If you’re traveling with pets, you know you’ll need to bring something for them to drink out of. If you have ice in a container, they can lick the ice to stay hydrated, but it doesn’t slosh around or spill easily.

* On June 23, 1972, Title IX of the education amendments of 1972 is enacted into law. Title IX prohibits federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex in all areas, including athletics. * On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson, one of the most successful entertainers in history, dies at age 50 at his home in California. Jackson suffered cardiac arrest caused by a fatal combination of prescription drugs given to him by his personal doctor. * On June 26, 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway is officially opened, creating a navigational channel from the Atlantic Ocean to Duluth, Minnesota. The system of canals, locks and dredged waterways extends for nearly 2,500 miles.

• Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.

* “If you have trouble holding your cat still to clip its claws, sneak up while it’s asleep. You might get only a couple done before your cat catches on and wriggles away, but you’ll get there.” -- P.L. in Oklahoma (Slow and steady wins the race, P.L. Your tip works great for babies, too! -- JoAnn)

Magic Maze GIBRALTAR

• Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.

* Skunk run-in? Try this mix before you buy pricey de-stink shampoos at the pet store. Mix a quart of 3% peroxide, a teaspoon or two of dish soap, 1/4 cup of baking soda and quart of room-temperature water. Apply to pet, and work deeply into the fur. Massage in for five minutes, and rinse thoroughly. * Boiling potatoes? Plants love starch. Let your cooking water cool, then use it to water the plants in your garden. ●

The History Channel

• Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant.

* “Cutting corn off the cob can be tricky business, but you only need to recruit the right equipment. The next time you’re making corn for dinner, grab a Bundt pan. The corn cob gets set upright in the center, and when you cut down, the kernels fall right into the pan on all sides.” -- A.S. in Texas

MOMENTS IN TIME

• Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. What Is the Optimal Blood Pressure?

By Fifi Rodriguez

---

1. HISTORY: In what year did the Boston Tea Party take place?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read that high blood pressure is 140/90, but I thought 120/70 was optimal. Has the standard number increased? – D.M.I. ANSWER: The “pressure” in “blood pressure” is given in millimeters of mercury. It is a measurement of the pressure inside large blood vessels, first at its peak during the left ventricle squeezing (the systolic, or top number) and then at its lowest, right before the ventricle starts squeezing again (diastolic, or bottom number). Both of these numbers are important, and they provide important information about the physiology of the heart and blood vessels, as well as provide prognostic information about the risk of heart attack and stroke. In general, for healthy people, the higher the numbers, the greater the risk. The optimum blood pressure for health is about 110/70, but there are some people with lower values who are also very healthy and who have very low risk for vascular disease. Risk for heart disease starts to go up more significantly at about 140/90, but above a systolic number of 160, the risk goes up even more dramatically. The trend in blood pressure control over recent years has been toward making the blood pressure closer to the optimum, as long as treatment is well-tolerated. Having a slightly lower risk of heart attack may not be worth it to a person who has significant symptoms from blood pressure medicines. Fortunately, blood pressure is much easier to control than it used to be with better medications and with non-drug treatments, such as stress reduction, healthy diet, regular moderate exercise and, for some people, salt restriction. ***

TISSUE DONATION The decision to become an organ donor is a selfless act that quite often saves lives. Many people sign up to be organ donors when getting or renewing their driver’s licenses. But those same people may not know that they also can sign up to be tissue donors. According to Donate Life America, one tissue donor can help more than 75 people heal. Donated tissue is often used during surgeries and can help people in life-threatening situations. People with severe burns often benefit from tissue donation, as do athletes who have suffered torn ligaments or tendons and active and veteran military members who have been injured during combat. MTF Biologics, a New Jerseybased organization that has spent more than 30 years developing tissue grafting solutions to help people heal, advises all people, regardless of their age or medical histories, to consider themselves potential tissue donors. Much like with organ donors, a person’s condition at the time of death will determine if their tissue can donated. That means prospective tissue donors have nothing to lose by signing up. People interested in becoming tissue donors can register at www.donatelife.net. Page 20

Inside Look at Dairy Farming with El-Vi Farms of Newark BY AMANDA DUDEK

A

long Pelis Road in Newark sits the beautiful acreage of El-Vi Farms. Family-owned since its founding, El-Vi Farms, LLC, has been a local leader in dairy farming for nearly 75 years. Kim Skellie, one of four managing partners at El-Vi, shares some of his thoughts on dairy farming. El-Vi Farms was named after founders Elmer and Viola Peck who moved to the area from Waterloo. Originally founded near Phelps, El-Vi relocated to Newark in 1953 and has remained there ever since. From its inception until the present day, El-Vi has continued to be family-run. Joshua Peck, one of Elmer and Viola’s grandchildren, continues to lead as one of the farm’s four partners alongside Kim Skellie, George Andrew, and Allan Ruffalo. Even so, much has changed since the 1950s. “El-Vi Farms was originally a crop farm first and a dairy farm second until about the 1990s,” said Skellie. “Today, we milk about 2,000 cows at two different farms up from the farms’ initial 200, on about 3,500 acres. The crops we grow on these acres feed our herd.” El-Vi also employs just over 50 full and part-time employees. With each cow producing between 80-88 pounds of milk each day, El-Vi and its employees certainly keep very busy milking cows and growing enough feed for them. “We are milking just about around the clock, stopping for about 45 minutes three times a day,” explained Skellie. “The employees that grow the feed for our cows are also very busy doing crop work and maintaining equipment.” The milk flows into milking tanks, each of which hold tens of thousands of pounds of milk. A milk “chiller” instantaneously cools the milk to 37 degrees before it enters these tanks. With higher input costs in just about every industry, peak milk production is essential. “The milk market has gotten tighter with higher milk prices helping to offset steeper production costs,” explained Skellie. While partner Allan Ruffalo grew up working on El-Vi farm, Skellie and fellow partner George Andrew are Eastern New York transplants to the area. It was while driving back and forth to Ithaca during his college years that Skellie first became drawn to Western New York. “The eastern part of New York where I am from contains a lot more hilly, rocky, forested land,” he explained. “We didn’t have enough land to grow feed for our own cows and had to rely on other farms.” It was not simply an abundance of rich farmland that drew Skellie. “Here, there was an optimism about agriculture that was not present in Eastern New York,” he said. Skellie packed up his family and 320 cows and moved to El-Vi Farms where he had been brought on board to help grow the dairy business.. “It was quite the move!” he said. Although the dairy industry continues to face several challenges—one of the most challenging ones right now being availability of machine parts and new equipment—Skellie believes it is worth it. “We all feel growing up on a farm is a pretty good way to be raised, to learn, to gain work ethic and life skills,” he said, noting that while his children, as well as Andrew’s children, are nearly grown, Peck’s children are still young. “I also think we learned during the pandemic how valuable local food can be,” he continued. “In our area, shelves may empty, but food is not far away. We were

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

able to truck a fair amount of food down to NYC when they were in need, and we have donated thousands of gallons of milk locally.” Not only do dairy farms like El-Vi support their communities with farm products, but they also help drive the local economy. “We created a list of all the places we do business within the area and across Western New York,” said Skellie. “There were about 60 businesses listed which even surprised us.” Those employed by El-Vi are often active in their communities beyond the farm, as well. “Jonathan Taylor is the Mayor of Newark,” said Skellie of an El-Vi Farms member. “He works hard between his two jobs and his teenage kids. George Andrew is the treasurer of the Palmyra Christian School Board, and he is a member of the American Dairy Association North East (ADANE) board. He and his wife are directors on the board of Gideons International in our region.” Andrew’s daughter, Gabby, is this year’s New York State Dairy Ambassador, formerly known as a Dairy Princess. “She does a great job promoting dairy and educating other about the dairy industry,” added Skellie. “She is heading to college in the fall to focus on communication and journalism in agriculture.” Skellie’s community involvement includes positions on the Farm Bureau State Board of Directors, the New York Beef Council, and the New York Agricultural Society Foundation.

“Here, there is an optimism about agriculture.” - Kim Skellie

As for the future of El-Vi, Skellie seems optimistic. “We are in the process of having a methane digestor built this fall,” he said. “We are also focused on determining the next generation who will run El-Vi, getting them in place, and hearing their vision.” As for the industry, Skellie’s outlook also feels positive. “Dairy has a world market, and the US has been the best at efficiently producing high quality milk. New York State is a good state to dairy farm in thanks to an abundance of water, lots of land, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) support, lots of agribusinesses, and area colleges putting more agriculture programs in place.” Skellie plans to continue his work at El-Vi with a particular focus on the human side of the dairy industry. “I like working with people,” he said. “I enjoy coaching people, watching them learn, grow, and do a good job.” Enjoy this article? COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES

Forgetting to preheat: Preheating the grill ensures that foods will cook quickly and as evenly as possible. Otherwise, meats can lose moisture and even stick to cooler grates. Reader’s Digest suggests preheating to between 350 F and 450 F depending on the food.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In early 2015, Mattel released Hello Barbie, an interactive talking doll that didn’t just repeat preprogrammed phrases, but could actually hold a twoway conversation. The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to thirdparty vendors. Goodbye, Barbie! GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
