One tool we can utilize is traps as a deterrent. The first one is to use burlap folded over and secured to the
tree to create an open suitcase or upsidedown V with the burlap. The caterpillars climb up the tree into the V suitcase and stop because they typically are not smart enough to crawl down the V and up again on the outside. We can then monitor and dispose of any found caterpillars in the trap. Another method is to use duct tape and to trap the caterpillars. You use the
tape to create a wide band around the tree and then create the V with the sticky side of the tape exposed so the caterpillars become stuck.

I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. SEPTIC TANK PUMPING TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency. I’m very particular about my toys but I like using them to bait my friend into playing. My favorite thing to do is sit in my parents laps whether they are working, exercising, or just hanging out. Nothing stops me from trying to lay on them. I was born to snuggle.

Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

(NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. CPAP Machine Can Help With Sleep Apnea

DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths, sighs, are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea.
FOOD ALLERGY FAST FACTS Food allergies can develop from birth, and some last a lifetime. Others are developed at different ages and may be outgrown. No matter when allergies stop or start, they can be a life-threatening problem for children. Although food allergies may be managed more easily at home, they present different challenges for school-aged children. School nurses and administrative officials should be informed about food allergies, especially if they are severe enough to warrant medical intervention, such as medication. Food allergies are quite common. Consider these allergy facts that can help parents better understand any issues their children might face. • The Food Allergy Research and Education network says nearly 15 million people in the United States, many of whom are children, are affected by food allergies. • One in 13 Canadians, or roughly 2.5 million people, are affected by a food allergy, according to estimates from the Allergy, Genes and Environmental Network. • Around 7 percent of Canadian children under the age of 18 report having at least one food allergy. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have other related conditions, such as asthma and other allergies. • Food allergies are an immune system response to the food, not a case of digestive intolerance. • Among food allergic children, peanuts are the most prevalent allergen, followed by milk and shellfish, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. • Food allergies can cause everything from mild reactions, such as itchiness or hives, to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction. • Risk of food allergies increases when there is a parent who suffers from any type of allergic disease - even those beyond food allergies. • A recent study conducted by researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that children are taking longer to outgrow milk and egg allergies. • Food avoidance remains the best way to prevent symptoms of food allergies. That is why reading product labels is vital.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Irish author and politician Edmund Burke was not a skilled public speaker. In fact, his speeches at the House of Commons were so boring, many MPs left the building once he stood up. * While Jackie Robinson was laid up for two weeks in 1948 with a hamstring injury, the Dodgers secretly replaced him with Herschel Morowitz, a white man in black face. * Drinking seawater will cause rapid dehydration and, if enough is consumed, eventually death. Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice. GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Loud Obnoxious Neighbor! I’ve enjoyed my porch for 20 years. Four years ago, enter my new neighbor’s wife, who seems to enjoy screaming every sentence that comes to mind, including yelling at her 2 year old and yelling into the telephone like it was two tin cans connected by a string. Guess what? Your neighbors don’t want to hear it. I no longer enjoy sitting on my porch as I can’t stand the constant yelling that has replaced the birds chirping.
S E V RA Teamwork After last Saturday’s event involving farm equipment and electric lines (and cable lines and telephone lines) in Oakfield, I wanted to put in a good word about how all the agencies involved worked diligently together for safety, protection, and repair during this incident. Although our services were off for a bit, the agencies involved responded quickly and efficiently. Having a bird’s eye view of this provided first-hand knowledge of all that was involved and the extent it took to repair and return full service to the residents of Oakfield. In present times, it is hard to justify the rising cost of just about everything, but to witness the manpower, the equipment involved, and to see how these people worked together as a well-oiled machine, (and it is dangerous work), I can understand where at least some of the money goes when paying for these services. So, I would like to say thank you again [to these people] for all they do. Lab Visit I just went to get my blood work done. I have bad veins and am always nervous when I have to get blood drawn. I love going to [local] labs because they cater to my individual needs and always do a good job. This time I got [name]. She had a beautiful personality. Although she had trouble getting my blood to go in the syringe, she [did] get the job done. She had to stick me twice. I always tell people that they get just one chance with me. After she had trouble with the initial stick, I told her that I would come back. For her to talk me into [trying] again was, in itself, a miracle...I want to thank her for getting me through the process. Hats off to her. See you [again next time]. Helpful Staff Thanks to Avon Officer Hall and the Landpro driver who each stopped to see if we needed help after driving over an object that left a gash in our tire.

The Least Intelligent Recently, we heard of another mass shooting. This shooting was caused by what I consider the least intelligent type of person. That is, those who are prejudicial. Prejudicial people seem to believe that they had a choice in who their birth parents were. If people had that ability, then everyone would probably be wealthy and belong to a loving family, the same race, gender, and ethnic background. We would be so much alike that nobody would be able to tell us apart. That is not the case, and any intelligent person knows that. I thank God for our differences because it is those differences that make life more interesting. Lazy Jogging Pet Owner I was standing at the front door and checking out the start to a beautiful Sunday when I saw a woman jogging with her white dog through my front yard. I didn’t mind until the dog stopped for a bathroom break and proceeded to poop on my front lawn. I opened the door and made eye contact with the woman. She started pulling her dog and jogging away. Seriously, carry dog poop bags and clean up after your pet! It’s just rude, and I would have given you a bag! Busted To the couple who swiped my geraniums off my porch Saturday night: you’re on video! Enjoy my Mother’s Day flowers from my kids.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peels from your oranges, and dry them at a low temperature in the oven. You can add them to a pot of coffee or tea for a flavor boost that is refreshing and delicious.

Pet’s First Visit to the Veterinarian DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m planning to adopt a cat soon. This is my first pet, and I’m looking forward to caring for it. The local shelter gave me a few instructions to follow, pre-adoption, including making an appointment for a veterinary checkup. Is there anything I should know about my cat’s first vet visit? -- Kara L., Buffalo, N.Y. DEAR KARA: Congratulations on deciding to accept a cat into your life! It will be a rewarding experience. I’m also glad that you’re doing your homework ahead of time to give your cat the best start on a new life. Here are a few tips that will help with your first veterinary visit: * Research local clinics ahead of time. Is there one that specializes in cats? * Purchase a cat carrier that best fits your cat (in terms of size, not decor). This will make transporting the cat from the shelter and to and from the vet much easier and safer. * Keep all paperwork from the shelter in a folder and bring it with you. * You should be able to be present during the exam. It’s a great time to ask questions about caring for your cat. Be ready to take notes. * Listen to the vet as he or she gives you information about your cat’s general health. Vets or their assistants often talk to you throughout the process, telling you what they’re checking for and the result. * Follow the vet’s instructions. If a follow-up visit or more tests are needed, make sure you do it. Write down special instructions like how much and what type of food to feed your cat, or instructions on giving medication. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something.
UNWANTED vehicles WANTED Foreign or Domestic, running or not. Cars, trucks, RVs, motorcycles, boats, ATVs, etc...
highest price paid. Also picking up unwanted appliances. Free pickup.
Call 315-210-0679 today!
* “Cure your color in new garments (especially dark- or bright-colored) by soaking the item in cold, salty water before washing. Make sure that the fabric will allow this! * “Take good care of quality paint brushes, and they will take care of you! Wash thoroughly in soapy water and rinse very well. After the brush is washed, combine enough water to cover the bristles and add two tablespoons of fabric softener. Swish for a minute or two, being sure to get it in the brush good, then hang to drip dry. Before you use the brush to paint, simply rinse the fabric softener away.” -- M.E. in Washington
When looking for a new hobby, adults may find that activities that suit their personalities tend to be the most rewarding.
* Baking soda can be used as a tooth scrub. It’s particularly effective against stains, as it is a mild abrasive. * “When you are dusting, don’t forget the light bulbs. Dusty light bulbs can contribute to less-bright lighting and can shorten the life of your bulbs. Turn lights off when you are not using them. You will save electricity that way.” -- A.L. in Oklahoma

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles A Trip to the Museum A local art museum, lacking many patrons because people are still avoiding crowds due to COVID, came up with a great idea: open the place to seniors. Those of us who’ve been locked down for too long, turning up our noses at proposed activities at the senior center, thought this was a swell idea. We did, however, decline the offer of a van. Instead, we all drove in our individual vehicles to avoid being breathed on by others. The museum was ... lovely. So excited was staff to have real and actual patrons that they pulled out all the stops for us. Young docents-in-training hovered, but not too closely, as we spread out in the large, high-ceilinged rooms clutching our brochures. Spend more than 10 seconds in front of a display of Mediterranean antiquities, and a docent would appear, many steps away, to tell us about the artifacts. Squint at the detail of a Winslow Homer painting, and there would be a docent offering a magnifying glass and talking about brush work. Look at the artistry of the Native American baskets and wonder how they got all those varied colors, and a docent would know. It didn’t hurt our feelings at all to be told later that these docents-in-training were students at a local art school and would get extra credit for their participation. They did a fine job. The senior center staff did too, surprising us with a bagged lunch on the museum grounds after our visit. There were enough picnic benches for us to spread out in the sunshine, and a male spouse was commandeered to tote around a cooler of iced drinks to hand out, along with a wide variety of chips for us to trade like school children. It’s a good thing I had my checkbook in my purse. Before I left, I purchased a membership as a Friend of the Museum. I’ll be back. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. ~ James A. Baldwin DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less. DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.
WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

The Blessing Room in Bloomfield Praises Local Farms BY AMANDA DUDEK
J
une is Dairy Month and an excellent opportunity to celebrate local agriculture and the many exceptional farm families who are our friends and neighbors. With local farms come many benefits, not the least of which is the well-known generosity of farm families, reducing food insecurity within their surrounding communities. Barbara (Barb) Blazek, Director of The Blessing Room Food Pantry, a Foodlink affiliate in Bloomfield shares the food pantry’s gratitude to these generous farmers. “Although we are a Foodlink affiliate, and Foodlink is our primary food provider, we are blessed to be in a more rural community like Bloomfield where there are several farmers,” said Barb. In 2021, the Ontario County Farm Bureau and the 2021 Ontario County Dairy Princess partnered with The Blessing Room to bring milk to families in need. “The 2021 Ontario County Dairy Princess was a Bloomfield High School student, and she did some of her service work volunteering at the pantry with us,” Barb recalled. “She just thought it was a great idea. They had a challenge to raise money for our us. That money enabled us to buy butter for the holidays, which was huge. Our clients love butter, especially at Christmastime when they do a lot of baking. It also allowed us to buy milk, which is a wonderful thing.” This generosity is often echoed by others in the agricultural community. “Several farmers help us by donating food to us,” said Barb. “For example, Wild Hill Farm is an organic farm and a CSA, I believe. After they grow their food and their members come and pick it up, they call us to pick up what is left, donating it to us. Very soon, I expect they will call again, and we will have fresh produce to offer our clientele.”
local farmers often provide the more fragile produce—leaf lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, tomatillos—that are best eaten as close to when they are picked as possible so that they better maintain their nutrients.
Barb, who comes from a long line of Wisconsin dairy farmers, understands that farm families face lot of challenges. She would like to see them receive appreciation for all that they do. “I don’t think farm families get enough love,” Barb shared that The Blessing Room frequently purchases butter from a local she said. “Bloomfield is the most generous community, both farmers and all farm in Mendon during the holiday season when the pantry is in need of more our neighbors.” butter. “This farm market in Mendon sells us butter than is made by local farmers,” said Barb. DID YOU KNOW? Outdoor exercise can benefit both the planet and the people doing the exercising. By exercising outdoors instead of at home or at indoor fitness centers, men and women can reduce their carbon footprints. Exercising in the great outdoors does not require the use of energy-consuming fitness machines. In addition, when exercising outdoors during daylight hours, nature provides all the light men and women will need for their workouts, further reducing the average person’s energy consumption. And it’s not just adults who can benefit from spending more time outdoors. According to the Harvard Medical School, children are likely to get more exercise if they spend time outdoors than they are if they spend time indoors. A study from researchers in England used GPS devices and accelerometers to track the activity of 1,000 children. The children were more than twice as active when they were outside than they were when they were in inside. When children spend ample time outdoors, that, too, can benefit the environment. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average youngster spends three hours per day watching television and gets as much as seven hours of screen time each day. When kids are outdoors, they are less likely to be staring at energy-consuming screens and devices than they are when they’re indoors.
