LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY High-quality food: Many local establishments have complete control over their suppliers and menus. As a result, they can be picky with regard to the vendors they use and the produce, meats, dairy, and other ingredients that they select. Many small, independently owned restaurants team up with local organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience that many diners now enjoy.

Prevent bugs, sap and other substances from ruining a vehicle Tree sap Although tree sap won’t cause immediate damage to vehicle paint, it should not be ignored. Over time, sap can become more difficult to remove, etch through the clear coat on the vehicle and cause discoloration. When the temperature is hot, damage from sap can accelerate. On windows and windshields, drivers may be able to gently remove dried sap with a razor blade. However, use cleaning products on more delicate paint. Automotive stores sell speciality sap and tar cleaners. Otherwise, you can try rubbing alcohol. It may take a few attempts to remove sap entirely.

ELECTRICAL
NEED IT? RENT IT!
EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY Solar electricity is generated through a process known as the photovoltaic affect. Sunlight shines on solar panels, which are mounted on the roof of the home or in another prominent location. Each panel typically has between 60 to 72 solar cells strung together. These photovoltaic cells use the irradiation in sunlight to stimulate the flow of electrons in the semiconductor material, which creates direct current, or DC, electricity. Systems that directly convert the DC to alternating current, or AC, the type of power voltage used in a house, do so by way of an inverter. The inverter feeds power to the circuit board.

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a new neighbor with a big dog moved into one of the apartments next door. Since then, every morning there’s a fresh deposit of dog poo on my front lawn. And not on the edge -- right in the middle of the lawn. Because it happens before sunrise each day, I suspect the new neighbor is letting their dog out, unleashed and unsupervised, to do its business wherever it pleases. How should I deal with this problem? I don’t have clear proof that it’s the new neighbor, but it sure smells like it. -- Disgusted in Dallas Dear Disgusted: I’m with you. Owners need to be responsible for their pets, and they need to be good neighbors by keeping their dogs on a leash and picking up after them.

Members of:
There are a couple of ways to discover the culprit. The low-cost way is to wake up well before dawn and watch your front lawn. Snap a photo of the dog when it comes onto your property, but don’t try to shoo it away -- you’re gathering evidence. The high-cost way is to install a security camera with a motion sensor. Aim it so that it has a good view of your property but not other yards (it’s a privacy issue). Set it to record when the motion sensor is triggered. With or without proof, contact the property manager of the apartment building. Calmly explain the situation and your suspicions, and ask them to remind residents in writing about leash laws. Most property managers have a vested interest in keeping the neighbors happy and will cooperate to solve the problem.

Gardeners What small flowering shrubs will grow in my clay soil? Here are a few to consider for clay soils: Aronia, Diervilla, Dogwood, Elderberry, Flower Quince, Lilac, Potentilla, Rose of Sharon, Annabelle Hydrangea, and Weigela. Some of these have many varieties that are small in size.

Once we have the right plant in the right place planting begins with digging a hole twice as large as the root ball of the plant and to a depth that will be just deep enough to allow the current soil level in the pot or if it is bare root to the level of the root flare or collar. Place the plant in the center of the hole with root exposed. Finish with adding a 3 inch layer of mulch to the disturbed area making sure the mulch doesn’t cover the trunk(s) of the plant no higher than mentioned above. Therefore I suggested leaving the soil slightly below the root flare when backfilling. How do you tell when a lilac bush is dead? When there are no visible green or healthy buds, when the branches break rather than flexing when bent, and when no leaves begin to grow. These are all indications the plant likely is dead.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Don’t Disregard AARP
Starting when we reach age 50, our mailbox becomes flooded with frequent invitations to join AARP. At that age, we don’t want to hear about anything for seniors because, in our eyes, we aren’t seniors yet. We don’t even qualify for a senior discount at local stores. So maybe we don’t even look at the piles of literature and ads AARP sends. But maybe we should. There’s more to AARP than meets the eye. For a mere $16 per year, we get a whole list of benefits and information. The discounts themselves are impressive, in over a dozen categories. Want to send flowers or a gourmet fruit basket? Get a 20% discount. Traveling and need a rental car? Get a 30% discount. Save on RV insurance, prescriptions at Walmart, restaurants, hearing aids (20%), Ancestry.com (30%), Norton computer security (25%) and much more. There is a jobs board (315 jobs in my ZIP code alone), an auto-buying program to help with dealer pricing, online games, local chapters and podcasts, a government watch ... everything designed to help seniors. And then there is the AARP Bulletin monthly magazine that is sent by mail to members. If there’s one thing you don’t want to leave lying around unread, it’s this. I just picked up a recent copy and discovered three must-read articles: Identifying phone scams when you get a call, cutting the cost of online groceries and, most important of all, an article on drug interactions. Imagine my surprise to see two of my drugs listed with information about contraindications no one ever told me about. And what do they do with our membership fees? They advocate for us all over the country, especially with Social Security and Medicare. If you’re not signed up for AARP, it’s something you should consider. If in doubt, go to www.aarp.org and scroll down the page to see what’s new. If you have questions, call AARP at 888-687-2277 (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST) (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Thanks, Livonia! A HUGE shoutout and thank you to PJ Livonia Highway Superintendent for a great cleanup job from the residents of Tuxedo Park...very much appreciated by all!
Walkers on State Routes Why you would expect people traveling at 55 mph on a busy State Route to move into the other lane so that you could walk two abreast in the road is beyond me. And to make absolutely no effort to move onto the shoulder single file in the face of oncoming traffic is unbelievable! Wake up and smell the roses before they become part of your funeral arrangement!
Medical Last week, I got very sick and called an ambulance in order to be taken a hospital. When medical people arrived and tests were done, I was informed that an ambulance would not transport me to a VA hospital as it is not considered a full working hospital. I had to have my wife run me to VA hospital...very painful. After lots of testing, I was told I had a deep vein thrombosis in my groin at the top of right leg. I would think if a person were in that much trouble, you should be rushed. My legs were three times the size of normal.
Thoughtless People Someone was cruel and thoughtless enough to steal 4 decorative rocks off a grave in [local town]. They were obviously not just rocks; they were part of the “landscaping” of the grave. They had been there for 23 years! I can’t understand how someone can be so heartless and uncaring! If you have any conscience at all, please return them! Karma!
Where did respect go? When mowing the grass, if you have neighbors and want to be respectful, the right thing to do is now three passes, blowing grass away from the neighbor's property. Come on! Please use common sense.

Osteoporosis Treatment Could Put Jaw at Risk

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 80-year-old female in good health except for a diagnosis of osteopenia. My primary care doctor has prescribed medication for my osteopenia. I have periodontal disease and have been advised by my periodontal specialist not to take medication for osteopenia due to deterioration of the jawbone. I think I am in a loselose situation. I spoke to my internal medicine doctor, and he said he was concerned about a hip fracture if I don’t take the osteopenia medication. I don’t want to take a chance on the jaw deteriorating. Please give me your opinion on the best course of action. -- G.M. ANSWER: Osteopenia, also called low bone density, is a risk factor for osteoporosis. The risk of developing a fracture depends on a person’s age and sex, height and weight, results of their bone density test and presence of certain other medical risk factors, including previous fracture, use of glucocorticoid drugs like prednisone, smoking and rheumatoid arthritis. Fracture risk is commonly estimated by the FRAX tool (www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX/). If the estimated hip fracture risk is 3%, or the combined risk of any fracture is 20%, then medication treatment is usually recommended. Getting your FRAX result is a critical number to have to help make an informed decision. You will need the exact results of your bone density. If your risk is not so high that medication is recommended, there are many things you can do to help your bone density. These include adequate dietary calcium, supplemental vitamin D, regular exercise -- especially weight-bearing and strengthening exercises -- and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol. A home evaluation to reduce fall risk may be of benefit. If your fracture risk is already higher than the above threshold, medication would normally be prescribed in addition to lifestyle treatments. Antiresorptive treatments, such as alendronate (Fosamax) or other bisphosphonate drugs, do increase the risk for jawbone damage, and given what your periodontist has recommended, I would avoid not only these drugs but also denosumab (Prolia), which works similarly by decreasing bone resorption. Although I am not an expert, I would consider treatment with a medicine like teriparatide, which has been used as a treatment for people with jaw osteonecrosis. This medicine works by stimulating bone growth and has a good safety record. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Racoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.

“Chase Farms is a family farm. It’s a family endeavor with a lot of moving pieces,” said Mary Chase, noting that all kinds of family members including brothers, sons, daughters, and more are involved. Mary’s son, Don, affirms, adding, “We focus on outstanding quality in everything we grow; our produce is top quality produce. When you visit our farm stand, you are coming to a real working farm. That is one of the things that makes us unique.” “Farms like ours are an asset to the community because we give the community something,” said Mary. “People come out and pick our strawberries, not just for the berries, but for the fresh air, the walk, the exercise, the satisfaction of picking your own food... the experience.” Mary also points out her ice cream stand at which she sells fresh treats based on what is in season. “During strawberry season, we sell strawberry shortcake and ice cream with strawberries,” she explained. “When we pick raspberries, we will be making raspberry sundaes or another seasonal dessert, the same during peach season.”

You spread less fertilizer and get more yield. In our area, I will go through a field and come across 3-4 different soil types. So, if your spreader was automatically changing the fertilizer mix, that would be ideal.” While these advancements are exciting, something much more fundamental attracts both Mary and Don to the farming lifestyle: their love for family & growing things. “I enjoy working with my family,” said Mary. “I am watching my children and grandchildren enjoy the farm. I enjoy each day with everyone here, enjoying the farm and working with us. I also like to see things grow, especially in the spring.” “I like working with my family every day,” concurred Don. “I also enjoy the work, watching crops grow, getting to see each crop from when I put it in the ground to when I harvest it, and learning different management practices and seeing whether they work or not.” “Our goal is to keep Chase Farms as farms and pass it down to the next generation so that they can farm it, and I think I can see that happening,” said Mary.
Don adds that along with producing food, local farms also support their communities economically. “Local farms create jobs by employing people,” he said. “Beyond working for the farm, think of all the farm suppliers, all of the companies who work on the farm such as the mechanics who work on our equipment, those who haul crops, those who supply fertilizer, and others.” Benefiting the community and the environment is very important to the Chase family. “Some people think we are using products that are detrimental for the ground, the environment, and to be around,” said both Mary and Don. “We want these things to be healthy.” “We use the best possible practices on our farm,” Don clarified. “We care so much about the environment, and it is our job to keep it as clean as possible. We all have families who live on our farms; my kids are in the fields with me all the time, and we are not going to do anything or use anything dangerous to them or anyone else. We need healthy soil and a healthy environment so that our families and our communities can enjoy healthy produce.”

Want to support local farms and farm families? “Buy local products,” said Mary and Don. “When something is in season, purchase some. Buy milk from local dairies. In the community, try to support the ordinances that protect area farms. Remember, crops like corn and soybeans grow to feed many people, including those beyond our local communities.” Enjoy this article? CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

For more information, email: hometown@gvpennysaver.com THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Speak with a supervisor first. THE GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry. Networking is often seen as a means to further one’s career, but developing a group of professional contacts can also be a great way for professionals to stay abreast of the trends in their particular fields. Networking also can benefit small businesses as they look to connect with vendors that can help them grow their businesses. A strong professional network is not built overnight, and many professionals spend years nurturing relationships with people in their networks. Individuals and business owners can take several approaches when building professional networks they will rely on for years to come.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Got lots of fresh herbs from your summer garden? Hang bunches upside down in a cool place for a week or so. Crumble the leaves into small jars. You’ve made your own dried herbs. * “Want super-crunchy fries at home? Soak potato pieces in very cold water for an hour (fridge is best, or add ice often); dry and fry. Drain fries well, dust LIGHTLY with flour and quickfry one more time for only a minute or so.” -- T.C. in Idaho * If you want to cool your canned drinks quickly, add water to the cooler with a lot of ice, submerge all drinks under the ice line, and wait about 20 minutes. Without the water, it takes much longer. The water extends the surface contact of the ice. * To keep your ladder from sinking into soft sand or dirt, put each leg into a can or bucket. It creates a much larger surface area, thereby stabilizing the legs. * If you run out of bleach, add 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to a small load of white laundry. * Be certain to use only distilled water in your iron. The water from the tap can leave mineral stains on clothing, and will kill your iron if you do it all the time. -- R.E. in Louisiana
