Penny Saver Pet of the Week Hi, my name is Denali (Siberian Husky) 2 years old and my brother is Mack (German Shepherd) also 2. We live on a farm with our family. We love to run in the fields, run along with the 4-wheeler and swim. Our friends come over for “play dates” and enjoy the open fields to run and play as well! Our friends are Macy (Blue Nose Pit Bull) age 3, Bella (Rottweiler) age 1½ and RJay (Small Terrier) age 6. We all are very friendly and social with other animals and people.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

(NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children.

5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved: • 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3

GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW Although residents of chilly climates come to expect the flakes and gathering snow mounds, some people never quite get used to the cleanup involved in keeping neighborhoods safe and accessible. In M arch 2014, North America w as covered by the third-highest amount of snow that late in the season since record keeping began in 1966, according to NOAA’s U.S. National Ice Center. Snow can begin in September and October in some northern areas and stretch on until early spring. It pays to learn the best w ays to deal w ith snow and to incorporate some environmentally friendly strategies as w ell. The most eco-friendly w ay to remove snow is to w ait until the spring thaw w hen it’ll melt. Unfortunately that is not practical for most people. Therefore homeow ners and business ow ners need to look to other methods to clear drivew ays, parking lots and sidew alks of the w hite stuff.

• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6 • Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov. 1 - Primus, L. (2017). ness the manager took care of the problem. I guess if this is a rule, parents need to know about it before they pick up cake.

Don’t forget your child’s birth certificate when you go to pick up the “free smash cake” that a local store gives for a child’s 1st birthday with the purchase of a full size cake! Crazy request that my son was not aware of until he went to get the cake for the birthday party. Thank good-

To all the people who let their cats outdoors, please stop. The reasons are simple: your cat can be hurt or even worse killed by - A. Getting hit by a vehicle. B. Poisoned intentionally or by accident. C. Kidnapped and tortured by some horrible individual or for bait in dog fighting or by people who sell them to schools for experiments. D. Hurt or killed by an animal – wild or domestic like a dog or another cat. There are so many dangers outside your cat simply cannot protect itself.

Gotta appreciate the people who walk on the ‘correct’ side which is facing traffic (for a reason!), carry a flashlight and/ or wear reflective clothing as soon as it’s a little dusky, and when there is no sidewalk, move over safely and actually look at their pet dog on a leash to make sure it is safely out of the road! Thank you. Appreciate walkers who know and apply the rules of the road! Wish the lady who was riding her bike ahead of two children...one with training wheels... at dusk almost in the middle of the road would observe others and learn; watch the safe walkers, dog walkers and bikers who really do share the road... not act like ‘king of the road’!! Don’t be an accident victim.

In December, I gave two different neighbors rides to pick up their cars both at dealerships for recalls. Their experiences could not have been different. The first vehicle was in for an emission update due to recent litigation. The service manager was arrogant and accused the government of needlessly creating the problem. The work was not completed and my neighbor was charged $150.00 for diagnostics and was quoted $2400.00 to fix the vehicle so the recall could be completed. The second vehicle needed a new air bag and was at Hoselton Chevrolet. The service personnel were courteous, and the work was finished two hours ahead of time with no charge.

Brighter Side I had an unexpected trip to Highland Hospital by way of Avon Ambulance Squad on the morning of Tuesday, January 29, 2019. I can’t express how much I appreciate the care I received by this group of young people who took such good care of me. I have never had to use this service before but was very grateful that it was available. I have always made yearly donations to this organization and now I know how important this service is. Thank you to Alex, Nick, Ashley, Kelly- you should be so proud of the job you do! Those donations that we make each year are so important for our community. Thankful Always!

Heartfelt thanks to Elizabeth for rescuing me when I was hurt in the road and taking me to the expert staff at York Animal Hospital. I appreciate Jane and Richard helping to fund my care. Thank you, Liam, for welcoming me home again! Felix, the cat with 8 more lives. On Wednesday, February 6 during the ice storm in Batavia, my husband was trying to get me to our car in the parking lot behind the Williams Law Office. A young woman with an umbrella came out of nowhere and took my other arm, shielded me from the rain and assisted my husband with getting me to the car. She apparently could

see we were having difficulty as I must wear a leg brace and on a good day, it is difficult for me to walk. This definitely was not a good day. We did not get her name as she was gone so quickly. So, we would like to thank her the only way we can think of and hope she reads the Penny Saver. We were very grateful for her help. There are still good people who do good deeds. Thank you to the tow-truck driver who stopped to help a small white dog. It was on February 4th at 10am on Clinton St. Rd. outside of Batavia. He tried to find its owner and ended up keeping the dog in his truck. I hope he found its owner. Good job!!

I would like to thank the young cashier at West’s Shurfine in Honeoye for paying for my groceries when my debit card failed to clear! I had gotten gas and had a large hold on my card (1st time that ever happened). I will pay him back, with extra as soon as I get back down there!

ICE DAM S PUT HOM ES AT RISK FOR TERM ITES I’s not too soon for homeow ners to begin thinking about all the damage that homes may have sustained from prolonged cold, snow and ice. The National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) w arns that ice dams are one of the most troublesome w inter-related home problems as they can create the perfect environment for termites. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly. The melting snow backs up behind this dam and can leak into a home, causing w ater damage to w alls, ceilings, insulation and dryw all and providing enough moisture to attract termites as they begin to emerge at the first signs of spring. Termites are know n as silent destroyers because their constant gnaw ing can go unnoticed until significant structural damage to the home occurs. Even more problematic is that termite property damage, w hich according to NPM A accounts for at least $5 billion each year, is not covered by homeow ners insurance. Depending on the extent of the destruction, homeow ners can be saddled w ith large repair bills. Before the ground w arms, and termite sw arms emerge in search of new structures to feast on, homeow ners should take necessary steps to ensure w inter hasn’t done a number on their homes and left them vulnerable to pest problems in the spring. To prevent ice dams and possible subsequent termite infestations, NPM A offers the follow ing 10 tips: 1. Promptly clear snow off 6. Add insulation to the attic roofs before it freezes and rafters and ceiling. becomes harder to remove. 7. Seal and insulate HVAC ducts. 2. Install snow and ice shields 8. Install chimney flashing to on the roof. prevent leaks. 3. Clean out gutters, and install 9. Seal gaps around electrical gutter guards. cables and vent pipes. 4. Cover an attic or house fan 10. Install eave and soffit vents to during w inter. circulate cold air. 5. Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.

When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well. Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall. Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles. Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Take time from your busy schedule to check out what’s going on around you. You might find that someone has been secretly trying to pull the wool over those beautiful Sheep’s eyes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s boldness pays off in uncovering the source of a disturbing workplace situation. Your personal life calls for patience, as a certain matter plays itself out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Forget about going all out to impress someone in your personal life. Just being yourself is all that matters. A workplace decision will need more time. Don’t rush into it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Some supersensitive Crabs might take offense at what they perceive as a slight. But a closer look points to a simple misunderstanding. The weekend holds a welcome surprise. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Sure, you can roar your head off over someone’s failure to keep a promise. But the wiser course would be to ask why it happened. Be prepared for an answer that might well surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A developing relationship needs time to find its direction. So please be patient and resist pushing things along. A recently cooled-down workplace situation could heat up again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Congratulations. Your well-thoughtout proposal seems to be working. Someone who hasn’t agreed with you on most things in the past could turn out to be one of your major supporters. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things seem to be going well. However, you can still expect criticism -- some of it pretty heavy. But as long as you can back up your position, you’ll be able to rise above it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Getting together with people who care for you is a great way to get that ego boost you might feel you need at this time. Things start to look brighter by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You should be able to continue with your plans once you get past those temporary delays. Surprise, surprise. An offer to help comes from a most unlikely source. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing your tasks is important this week because of all those demands you have to deal with. The pressure eases in time for you to enjoy the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Save your energy and stay focused on what has to be done, despite all those distractions you’re likely to face. You should see some evidence of real progress by week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a generous, giving person who is always ready, willing and more than able to help others in need. An IRS Incentive To Save For Retirement (NAPS)—Tips for claiming the Saver’s Credit: 1. Check Your Eligibility Depending on your filing status and income level, you may qualify for a nonrefundable credit of up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) on your federal income taxes for that year when you contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or similar retirement plan, or IRA. To be eligible, the maximum Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for single filers is $31,500 in 2018 and $32,000 in 2019. For the head of a household, the AGI maximum is $47,250 in 2018 and $48,000 in 2019. For those who are married and file a joint return, the AGI maximum is $63,000 in 2018 and $64,000 in 2019. You must be 18 years or older by January 1 and cannot be a full-time student or be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return. 2. Save for Retirement Save for retirement in your employer’s retirement plan, if offered, or in an IRA. In general, for every dollar you contribute to a qualified retirement plan or IRA (up to the lesser of the limits permitted by an employer-sponsored plan or the IRS), you defer that amount from your current overall taxable income on your federal tax returns—and you may also qualify for the Saver’s Credit. After-tax contributions, such as those made to a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k), are also eligible for the credit. You have until April 15, 2019 to make a contribution to an IRA for tax year 2018. 3. File Your Tax Return and Claim the Credit When you prepare your federal tax returns, you can claim your Saver’s Credit by subtracting this tax credit from your federal income taxes owed. Workers who are eligible to claim the Saver’s Credit are also eligible to take advantage of the IRS Free File program for taxpayers with an AGI of $66,000 or less. Twelve commercial software companies make their tax preparation software available through the Free File program at www.irs.gov/FreeFile. • If you are using tax preparation software, use Form 1040 or Form 1040NR. If your software has an interview process, be sure to answer questions about the Saver’s Credit, also referred to as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit and/or Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions. • If you are preparing your tax returns manually, complete Form 8880, the Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions, to determine your exact credit rate and amount. Then transfer the amount to Schedule 3 (Form 1040) or Form 1040NR. • If you are using a professional tax preparer, be sure to ask about the Saver’s Credit. • Consider having any refund you receive directly deposited to an IRA to further boost your retirement savings. The 19th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey found that 62 percent of American workers are unaware that the Saver’s Credit exists. Don’t overlook this important tax credit; it may help you pay less in your current federal income taxes while saving for retirement. Spread the word—perhaps friends and family are eligible for this incentive but are unaware of it. For more details and resources on the Saver’s Credit in English and Spanish, visit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® at www.transamericacenter.org/saverscredit. TCRS is a division of Transamerica Institute®, a nonprofit, private foundation. The Saver’s Credit—an overlooked tax credit made available by the IRS to eligible taxpayers—could make saving for retirement more affordable than many people realize.

Begin Again Horse Rescue Faces Full Stalls By Amanda Dudek perhaps $8,000-10,000 in grants a year, but this has dropped to around $3,000.” Lilly explains that this is due to increasing competition for available grants as well as grant types. Many available grants are not specifically for horse rescue, but rather, they involve a service component, such as working with people with special needs or helping veterans. Therefore, Lilly and her rescue partners are finding ways to expand Begin Again.

ennifer Lilly, a founder and Executive Director at Begin Again Horse Rescue in Lima, has a passion for horses and educating others on their care and wellbeing. The nonprofit organization, Begin Again Horse Rescue, takes in horses at risk of neglect, abuse and possible slaughter. Lately, there have been more horses in need than stalls available. Begin Again Horse Rescue formed in 2009 with just Lilly and two other friends, helping horses from bad situations. “We take in horses at risk of neglect, abuse and possible slaughter, work with area humane societies which have no or limited facilities for horses, save them from auctions as well as accept owner surrenders,” said Lilly, current Vice President and Head of Intake. “Then, we rehabilitate them and find them new homes.” At first, Lilly and her two friends were doing this out of their own pockets, but, as Lilly points out, horses are expensive. “We felt that by becoming a 501c3 nonprofit, we could make more impact on the problem.” Lilly stated. “We were gifted a farm on 15A in Lima in 2015, which we have been steadily repairing and renovating.” Still, the need is overwhelming. The rescue farm’s capacity is 14 horses; the rescue currently has 17 and is utilizing foster homes for the overflow. “I am getting 6-8 requests per week,” said Lilly. “We are full, and that doesn’t allow us to address those needs.” This need is growing for a wide variety of reasons. “There are so many owner surrenders: people move, finances change, divorce happens,” Lilly states. “We also work with a number of local humane societies and shelters who have done legal seizures of neglected and abused horses.” Many of these organizations do not have facilities for housing horses. In order for law enforcement to seize a neglected or abused horse, they have to have somewhere to house it; otherwise, they have no choice but to leave the animal. “We want to be there for law enforcement,” said Lilly. “If there is nowhere for these horses to go, then they cannot get the horses into a safe, healthy situation.” Since seizures often involve legal prosecution, these horses tend to have an extended stay. “We have three right now which we accepted in August as part of a neglect case,” said Lilly, explaining that until a decision is reached, these horses cannot be given new homes. Meanwhile, Begin Again cares for these recused horses, several of whom come to them in deteriorating and desperate condition. “We restore them to health, bring them up-to-date with their health care and try to get them adopted,” said Lilly. Begin Again’s adoptions are unique, however. “We do not relinquish ownership of our horses,” explained Lilly. “We put them on permanent lease. This way, if anything happens, our horses will come back to us, ensuring our horses’ safety permanently.” This lifelong relationship also includes yearly checkups on each “leased” horse. Having found new homes for over 200 horses in the last 9 years, this level of commitment does not come cheap “We are 100% funded by donations and fundraisers and the occasional private grant,” said Lilly. “Our yearly operating budget is around $90,000 per year, even though we are completely staffed with volunteers, with the exception of one full-time employee. We used to get

Lilly is no stranger to the positive impact of working with horses, having done charity work bringing horses and people together for over 20 years. “We have most recently worked with the Livingston County Workforce Development Program, SUNY Geneseo, RIT, U of R, and the Livingston County ARC to help people complete volunteer hours, as well as multiple Eagle Scout projects. “We also accept those looking to complete school-based community service and court-ordered community service.” Lilly explains that as a volunteer organization, Begin Again draws from the community, but that they do not currently have enough volunteers to run their own outreach program. “We would like to see more opportunities to benefit groups in our community,” said Lilly, looking to the future. “We go out to events just about every week during good weather with our educational booth and often accompanied by a miniature horse. Our goal is to bring awareness to the neglect taking place with horses.” Lilly explains that one of Begin Again’s long-term goals is to build an education center to hold clinics, educate groups, offer healthcare and more, all free of charge. “We believe education should not come at a cost,” Lilly stated. “We do not ever want a lack of money to stand in the way of good horse care.” “We are also working on being accredited with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries of which we currently hold a verified status,” said Lilly, explaining that this would improve grant eligibility. This is a highly esteemed standard of excellence for animal refuges worldwide. “One of the requirements is that a property be completely fenced. Our perimeter fencing needs to be upgraded to become stronger and safer. So, this year, we have an ongoing fencing fundraiser with a $7,500 goal. After fencing, we will be very close to accreditation.” Lilly stated that Begin Again holds open volunteer hours every Saturday from 10am-1pm, adding, “Horses are in a more desperate situation than ever before and need help from all of us.” To learn more about Begin Again Horse Rescue and its Tack Shop, visit www.beginagainrescue.org Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? POLLINATOR HEALTH 101: ‘SCHOOLING’ STUDENTS THROUGH HANDS-ON LEARNING (NAPSI)—While schools continue to teach reading, writing and arithmetic, the blueprint for educators is shifting as teachers notice the value of handson science education. Many schools are bringing science to their own backyards—literally—by developing gardens and pollinator plots, where students can learn about agriculture’s hardest-working insects: pollinators. Sowing Seeds for Bees Learning about bees’ contribution to the food system in the classroom is certainly important; however, there’s no substitute for seeing these incredible insects in action. One example is Route 40 Elementary School in Maryland, where students are creating a garden maze. For this project, they’ll learn how to budget, oversee seed selection and use their math skills to design the maze. Students at Cole Valley Christian Schools (CVCS) in Idaho have learned all about pollinators and the structure and function of plants that support them in the classroom. They’ll now take those learnings one step further by establishing a garden on campus to increase pollinator activity in the area. “Students will be so engrossed in planting, observing and engineering that they won’t know they are even learning,” said Julie Morgan, the STEM coordinator with CVCS. Pollinators Postgrad Practical education shouldn’t stop after high school. Students at California’s Mills College are planting a “green screen” along a roadside fence next to a local dog park and farm; they’ll also maintain the area and act as “Bee Ambassadors” in the community, promoting sustainable agricultural practices that improve pollinator health. By transforming a patch of bare ground into a thriving plant community, the Mississippi Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University will also showcase the importance of diverse forage. Assistant Research Professor JoVonn Hill hopes this project will increase awareness of Black Belt prairies and highlight their importance to local pollinators. Plant Wildflowers to “Bee” Helpful Want to help? You can begin by planting pollinator-attractant wildflowers of your own. To bring pollinator education to a school or community near you, do what these schools did: Apply for a Bayer Feed a Bee forage grant. The program has already reached approximately 140 projects in 47 states and Washington, D.C. Learn More: You can check out the newest grantees and learn how you can apply at www.FeedABee.com.

Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

HOW TO PLAN A BIG-GROUP MOUNTAIN VACATION (NAPSI)—From destination weddings to family reunions and corporate outings, planning a group affair can be quite a large feat. Whether you’re gathering 50 or hundreds of your closest family and friends, you’ll need plenty of space and things to do. Big hotels or resorts are often quickto-mind, but bringing everyone together in one spot to bond can be hard when you’re trying to reserve conference rooms or common areas. To add a touch of homelike hospitality to group gatherings, many people are turning to luxury big cabins instead. From cabins with eight-plus bedrooms to renting out multiple cabins on one street for a private block party, it’s a unique option growing in popularity. One new community in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is taking the trend to heart. Gather in the Mountains Mountain vacations are often reserved in people’s minds for ski groups or avid hikers. But plenty of mountain destinations cater to everyone. Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains is a great option for groups because excursions such as white-water rafting and hiking are easily shareable. The area is also home to a theme park, aquarium, minor league baseball games and more, offering plenty of choices for outings. Gatlinburg itself, with restaurants, distilleries, a local craft scene and shopping, gives everyone the chance to head to one place, while spreading out and exploring the area based on their own interests. It’s also the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the country’s most visited national park with more than 11 million visitors annually. Staying active and sharing new experiences can help groups bond and break the ice if it’s a corporate or church retreat where people might still be getting to know one another. Heading to the mountains can offer a nice break from the traditional beach retreat, and rest and relaxation are still an option. From a soak in the hot tub back at your rental cabin to visiting an area day spa, calm and peaceful mountains are a great backdrop for a relaxing getaway. Stay Under One Roof New communities such as Cherokee Orchard are meeting a growing demand for luxury big cabin options in mountain destinations such as the Smokies. The neighborhood recently opened with four cabin rentals ranging in size from eight to 16 bedrooms, along with a pool house. Four more cabins are under construction, varying in size from eight to 20 bedrooms. Once completed, the neighborhood will feature eight log cabins sprawling across more than 1.2 private acres, all within walking distance of downtown Gatlinburg. In the community’s Majestic Pine Retreat, for example, 13 bedrooms include 10 king suites and three rooms with queen-sized bunks, making the cabin fit for 60 guests. A massive kitchen comes fully equipped, while log dining tables can seat everyone for a feast after an action-packed day. A home theater features a large screen, surround sound, stadium seating and plush leather chairs, while two hot tubs join outdoor seating and a grill for entertaining outside. Depending on the size of your group, The Mighty Crabapple Manor offers eight bedrooms, while The Big Oak Lodge provides 16. Each cabin has an impressive great room where the group can relive the day’s memories or break into teams for some board games. Or, everyone can head to the neighborhood’s community pool house for a swim. Whether a single cabin will fit your group or a large event has you renting out the neighborhood, this luxury big cabin trend is a great, unique way to get everyone together. women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chest-clutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack.

not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40. People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.
