Fair Housing Statement
Barb Van Volkenberg is my Everyday Angel. I have witnessed and been in awe of the wonderful care she and her husband have given her mentally handicapped brother for 30+ years. Barb was there for a good friend she lost to cancer and is now being very supportive of a friend with Alzheimer’s, whom she calls, visits and takes out often. She is also there for another friend with Parkinson’s. I hope I never have to deal with a major illness, but if I do, I’ll be lucky to have Barb as one of my friends. I also have other friends who are there for their families and friends in need. I’m sure others do, too. Many thanks to all of these Everyday Angels!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Sleepless Nights DEAR DR. ROACH: How much good does it do for the body to just lie there with your eyes closed all night long when you can’t sleep? -- D.R. ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to. Getting a little high-intensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years. After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This is what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? -- H.T. ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned) for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Thank you. -- S.C. ANSWER: Of course, the answer depends on the specific type of food, but a good rule of thumb is three to four days for cooked food. I found more exact recommendations at www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/storagetimes.html *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Common causes of poor vision Vision loss is a common condition, as the World Health Organization notes that more than 285 million people across the globe suffer some type of visual impairment. Many people can effectively counter their vision problems with prescription lenses, but others may have a more significant issue, such as low vision. The Kellogg Eye Center defines low vision as a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses. Those with low vision have some useful sight and are not considered completely blind. However, low vision can interfere with performance of daily activities, and some people with this condition are classified as “legally blind.” Symptoms of low vision include difficulty recognizing objects at a distance or problems with differentiating colors. Yet, not everyone dealing with these symptoms has low vision. Specialized testing can determine if a person has low vision or another condition. Many conditions can impact sight and contribute to vision loss. Here’s a look at some of the more common ones. • Glaucoma: A person with glaucoma may gradually lose peripheral vision. Early symptoms, such as a subtle loss of contrast, may be unnoticeable. Eventually, glaucoma may cause tunnel vision, which occurs when a person can only see through a small window. • Macular degeneration: Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss, affecting more than 10 million people in the United States alone, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. The AMDF offers that macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the retina’s central portion, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it

contributes to one’s ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors and see objects in fine detail. • Retinal detachment: An increase of floaters or sudden flashes of light in vision may be indicative of retinal detachment or a tear in the retina. When caught promptly, a detached retina may be repaired. However, if left untreated and the detachment reaches the macula in the center of the retina, vision loss may be irreparable. The National Eye Institute says those with extreme nearsightedness, those who have had cataract surgery or those with a family history of retinal detachment are at a high risk. • Diabetic retinopathy: Blurring or patchy vision loss can be a side effect of high blood glucose levels. Not all people with diabetes will develop vision problems, but it is common enough to warrant attention. • Cataracts: According to The Mayo Clinic, a cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up the eyes’ lenses. Clouded vision can make it more difficult to read or drive. Over time, cataracts may obscure vision so much that they require surgical repair. Routine eye examinations can bring potential vision disturbances to light and facilitate faster treatment. Eye doctors also can make suggestions about lifestyle changes, including the use of optical devices to improve sight.

Recent research has acknowledged the significant benefits that board games have, not only on children’s cognitive development and their brain’s motor functions, but also on important life skills such as patience, cooperation, concentration, teamwork and perseverance. “We find that game play enhances many cognitive functions, including visual discrimination, visual span, visual processing speed, visual-motor integration and visual sustained attention,” says Jason Pine, president and founder of the national after-school program Sharp as a Tack. “It is astounding how much progress each student makes in terms of cognitive processing speed in just one session! You can see the transformation in their eyes and body language.”

Twice now, driving on public roads, cars are stopped by parents standing in the road begging for money for their kids’ cheerleading groups. Big threatening amazon type women stand in the middle of the road and push money containers into drivers’ faces, while mean spirited hulk type men stop cars on the other side of the road. Come on parents, pay for your own kids’activities instead of harassing motorists for money. The town should not allow this begging on public roads. If cheerleaders need money, let them work for it. Motorists should not be forced into giving money by threatening parents shoving money containers in their faces. Being a school bus driver I see this a lot and it needs to stop. Drivers--stop making new rules for the road. Do not stop in the road and flag a bus to proceed if they are turning left when you are going straight. YOU have the right of way--use it. You may think you are being helpful but you are not. You are creating a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. There are rules for a reason-so

Basin 640 Pittsford Victor Rd., Pittsford/Bushnells Basin Effective Ways To Manage Stress In The Workplace Concerns over low pay and job security are consistently one of the top stressors for Americans. In most regions of the U.S., 16 percent of Americans listed low pay as their top stressor, and concerns over job security were a close second. For example, 13 percent of college graduates ranked losing their job as the biggest stressor, which is in line with Americans without college degrees. Workplace stress can have negative consequences on your performance at work, and your life. There are a number of techniques for dealing with workplace stress. First, learn to recognize the symptoms - you may feel a constant sense of nervousness, which can often lead to feeling withdrawn, irritable or apathetic. Stress is also associated with physical problems, such as fatigue and muscle tension. Physical exercise is also shown to help with stress management. Aerobic exercises have been shown to release mood-raising endorphins, so getting 30 minutes of exercise a day can actually help decrease your stress levels. It is also important to get enough sleep, which can help your body deal with the effects of stress throughout the day, and makes you better able to manage emotional swings. There are also important strategies in your workplace that can help you deal with stress. Do not over-commit to non-essential tasks. Prioritize important tasks, and learn to delegate non-essential ones. Also, you can schedule regular breaks into your daily routine to allow yourself to get away from your workstation or office.

Getting Started: Making the Most of an Internship Today’s college kids are well aware of the job market that awaits them upon graduation. With an economy still on the mend and unemployment rates still high, college students across the country know that their post-graduation dream job is no guarantee. As daunting as entering the job market amidst the ongoing economic woes might seem, college students or even recent graduates can take steps to make themselves more attractive to prospective employers. Perhaps no such step has been more popular over the years than securing an internship. Internships are designed to give current students or recent graduates an entry into a field that interests them, providing an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and pad their resumes in the meantime. As valuable as a good internship can be, it can also prove a lost opportunity for those students who don’t recognize the opportunity at hand. To make the most of an internship, students or recent graduates should consider the following suggestions: • Find one that’s the right fit. Some students accept an internship simply because it looks good on a resume. While it’s true an internship stands out to hiring managers or other human resources personnel, students must find the right fit to make the experience truly valuable. For example, students who accept an internship outside of their major might not approach it with the same work ethic they would if they were to find an internship in a field they want to work in. That indifference, coupled with the lack of financial compensation commonplace with most internships, might lead to a less inspired effort, which won’t lead to a strong recommendation from bosses down the road. The recommendation could prove as important as the internship itself when it comes time to look for full-time work. So when seeking an internship, students should not simply settle on one because it’s offered. Rather, students should choose an internship that’s in a field they’re genuinely interested in. • Routinely meet with supervisors. Because most internships are during the summer, interns have a way of getting lost in the shuffle while their supervisors are away on vacation. Interns should meet, or at least discuss via the telephone or e-mail, regularly with supervisors to review their performance. This exhibits enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, while also putting interns in a position to get the most out of their internships. • Treat the internship like a lucrative full-time position. At times, being an intern can prove pretty awful. Most interns don’t get paid, despite working long hours and wearing many hats for their employers. As difficult as it may seem at times, interns should treat their internships as if they’re getting paid lots of money. That means showing up on time, working hard, staying late if necessary, and most of all, not complaining. Negative attitudes have ruined many an intern. Interns must remember that an internship is not a right, but a privilege, one that can lay the foundation for a successful career. Treating an internship like a lucrative position helps interns stay focused and work hard, even when it’s tempting to kiss that nonexistent paycheck and long hours goodbye. • Don’t be pigeon-holed. Some internships are better than others, and the best ones often rotate interns throughout several departments. That enables interns to learn more than one aspect of the business, possibly helping them choose the area they like most and the area they would prefer to avoid when it comes time to job hunt. Even if a company does not rotate its interns, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for an intern to learn more than his or her job entails. Before going it alone, interns should discuss with their immediate supervisor if it’s possible to learn additional aspects of the business. Offer to come in on off days or stay late to see how the whole operation works. This also allows interns to meet more people, which can only help when the time comes to find fulltime work. • Remember it’s only temporary. Some interns love their internships and don’t mind working free for long hours. Others are not so lucky and fight the urge to quit on a daily basis. For the latter, the best advice is to remember an internship is only temporary. As hard as it can be to get out of bed and go work for no pay all day, it’s imperative interns keep a positive attitude regardless of how little they like their internship. Internships last roughly three months, so even the worst one with the worst boss will be over soon and students will still be able to make a valuable addition to their resume.
