LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME

$$

(NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud.

So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise.

Northside Salvage • 585-969-3309 #5280659

Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. For great soundproofing results, you can install the stone wool insulation in your home theater, basement, home office, laundry room, furnace room and even the washrooms. Its high-density and unique fiber structure reduces noise traveling from one room to another. Learn More: For further facts, visit www.rockwool.com/products/safensound.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

1979 Miss USA Mary Therese Friel Remembers Growing Up In The Finger Lakes By Amanda Dudek

I

f you are looking for 1979 Miss USA Mary Therese Friel, skip London, New York City, Paris and Milan. Most days find Friel in Mendon, a town nestled in the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York. Mary and her husband, Kent, make their home in a renovated barn, complete with a glorious stained-glass window. It is somehow fitting that something so beautiful and serene now fills Friel’s home with the same radiant light it once spread over prayerful worshippers. “I love my home and this area,” said Friel. “This place is magic to me.” Friel traveled extensively upon being crowned Miss USA. “I visited so many places and have seen so much,” said Mary. “From London to Paris, Milan and the beautiful skies of Spain. I have journeyed on camelback to Saudi Arabia. I approached awe-inspiring Pompeii Mary Therese Friel as the 1979 Miss USA in a yacht, sailing with the richest man in the world.” Yet, for all the majestic sights she has seen, Friel prefers the New York countryside. “It is great to go to Brazil and walk the beaches, but I would miss a good snowfall!” she quipped before adding more seriously, “I feel that people who raise their families here – in towns like Canandaigua, Naples, Dansville, Avon – give their children the greatest gift.” She may be a bit partial, being a Pittsford native. “I loved growing up in the Pittsford and Greater Rochester area,” said Mary. “There was always so much to do! We used to go horseback riding. We also would ski, ice skate and build snowmen, especially when I would go with my family to the Adirondack Mountains. We loved watching my father plant his garden each spring.” Friel also fondly recalled another local feature which she still enjoys today. “I loved the Genesee Valley Penny Saver,” Mary said. “I would read it as a child, and it is still one of my favorite papers! I especially enjoy checking Give & Take and leafing through its pages, hunting for leads to vintage finds.” When she was crowned the 1979 Miss USA, Friel rocketed to national prominence. “I was in shock,” Mary recalled. “I didn’t go into it knowing I would win. For me, it was simply what I was meant to do.” She described her pageant beginnings as a Kodak Girl at age 11. “I later entered Miss Finger Lakes and was 1st runner up,” Mary explained. “After returning from college in Miami, I found a letter waiting for me, asking me to be in it again.” She agreed. Ten girls, including Friel, placed in Miss Finger Lakes and were sent to the State of New York pageant in the Catskills. “Another girl was already “Miss Pittsford,” so I became ‘Miss Barge’ for the Erie Canal,” said Mary. Friel’s father quickly pointed out that she had the only one syllable title, and when she was upset over her green bathing suit, her father noted how well the green would complement her hazel eyes. “He could take anything and make it a positive,” said Mary.

Even with Beauty Queen status, success hasn’t changed what is important to Friel. “God, church, family, animals, community, education – all of that was first for me growing up,” said Mary. “I felt like participating in pageants was for them because these things are a gift.” Self-identified as “down to earth,” Friel’s compassion reveals a deeply empathetic soul. “I care so much about everything,” she confided. “I love children, seniors, animals, veterans, the homeless – everyone! God made this world, and we are blessed to live in it. If we were all good to each other, we would take care of the world.” Friel’s life reflects the sincerity of her words. “We support many charitable causes,” she stated. “Through our Comfort Campaign, we annually support FoodLink, Pittsford Food Cupboard, Gary the Happy Pirate, Toys for Tots, Lollypop Farm, Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the Center for Youth through Fashion Week of Rochester, Veterans... It seems like we are always loading up our 1-ton truck to help!” Friel also operates the Mary Therese Modeling Agency’s program You Can Be... as well as its Goodwill Ambassador Program. Along with her faith and her upbringing, an encounter with Mohammed Ali greatly impacted Friel’s life. “When I met Mohammed Ali in 1980, he said, ‘Service to others is the rent we pay for our room in the hereafter.’ That really stuck with me,” said Mary. “He said when you are given the gift of fame or acknowledgement, what really matters is how you use it to help others.” Even Friel’s pets, her “children,” give back to the community. “My rat, ferret, rabbits, two dogs and two cats are all participants in Lollypop Farm’s pet therapy program,” Mary shared, adding that While she has no child of her own, she and Kent work with children all day at their modeling agency. “It is the highlight of our lives,” she said. Friel hopes to encourage other young women with her story. “I hope they read this story and think, ‘If she did it, I can do it, too.’” To learn more about Mary Therese Friel, visit her agency website at www. mtfmodels.com. Blood Pressure Drops When He Stands Up

presents:

---

SPRING FLING 2019

DEAR DR. ROACH: Will you write about orthostatic hypotension? I’ve been told I have this disorder. I’m a retired 86-year-old man in fairly good medical shape. I want to regain my regular activities. My regular doctor put me on labetalol. I think he is researching this a bit himself. This apparently is not a frequent problem. I have found articles about it on the internet, but the medical language is not easy to understand. -- R.T.F. ANSWER: “Orthostatic hypotension” literally means “low blood pressure on standing upright.” It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. There are many medical conditions that can lead to the symptom of orthostatic hypotension, but many people, especially those over 65, have no discernable cause that can be found. On standing, the blood pools in our veins, and the heart and blood vessels need to rapidly adjust to prevent blood pressure from falling too much. Even a brief drop in blood pressure can lead to a sensation of lightheadedness, and to fainting if it is more severe and prolonged. Normally, blood pressure drops about five points, but the body compensates by increasing heart rate and by constricting blood vessels. As we get older, our body’s ability to adapt to rapid changes in position can diminish. Medications, especially beta blockers and antidepressants, interfere with the body’s coping mechanisms. So I am surprised that your doctor is trying labetalol, since it is both a beta and alpha blocker, and it is one of the most notorious causes of orthostatic hypotension. But it can be difficult in older people with high blood pressure to find a medicine that doesn’t make orthostatic hypotension worse. Some general advice may be of benefit. First, don’t try to get up too quickly. If lying down, sit up for a few minutes before trying to stand, to give your body time to adapt. If your doctor says it’s OK, increase salt and water intake. In your case, it might be worth finding someone, like a hypertension expert or a cardiologist, with more expertise in managing orthostatic hypotension. I assure you it is far more common than you might think.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been experiencing shortness of breath whenever I vacation and walk in the mountains. I was a smoker, but I quit 31 years ago. My doctor sent me for the lung capacity breathing test, and I passed with flying colors. The technician said my number was one of the highest she has seen. This concerns me. Why is it happening? -- N.L. ANSWER: I have two concerns. The first is that lung capacity is a measure of just what it sounds like -- how big the lungs are. When the technician says it’s among the biggest she’s seen, I worry that it’s too big. An elevated lung capacity can go along with emphysema, which can be related to distant smoking or can be due to a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Emphysema can be diagnosed by other components of pulmonary function tests, particularly a test called the DLCO, and confirmed by X-ray or CT. However, breathing problems also might indicate heart problems and anemia, so you might need another visit. On the other hand, there is less oxygen in the thin mountain air, so some degree of shortness of breath might not be abnormal. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Install motion detecting lights around gardens. Motion detection technology might be enough to deter nocturnal wildlife from trampling or eating gardens. Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners who hope to avoid erecting barriers around their gardens can put up posts instead, attaching aluminum cans or wind chimes to the posts that will make noise when animals come near. Much like light, noise can be enough to deter animals.

HOROSCOPE

for the latest deals, behind-the-scenes, sneak peaks, hometown photos & more! @gvpennysaver

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Untangling personal problems might take more time than the impatient Lamb expected. But it’s important to hang in there until all those knotty situations are straightened out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You still need to work out last-minute snags in your dealings with a rival. Hold your ground despite a perceived lack of support. Things should turn around before you know it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Best not to delay preparing for that upcoming family event. The sooner you get things started, the better chance you have of finding potential problems and making needed changes. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The romantic Moon Child might be reluctant to see the reality behind that “ideal” situation. But by midweek, the practical Crab emerges to help clear away the moonbeams. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Big Cat might be receptive to more “purrsuasion” to get you to agree to a workplace change, make sure you can distinguish the fine line between facts and flattery. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your positive attitude in the workplace helps to get you noticed by the right people. Now go ahead and use some of that new selfconfidence to help shore up a personal relationship. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you might still have to work out some problems with a business partner, things go more smoothly on the home front. An investment opportunity might need more study. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t be reluctant to act on your suspicion. Even if others see nothing wrong, the astute Scorpio could sense an underlying problem that isn’t always obvious on the surface. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new opportunity presents some obstacles that need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Delaying action in hopes that the problems will go away could be counterproductive. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A friend or family member’s request might carry some hidden factors that could later create problems. Be sure you know all the facts before you make your decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A setback in implementing a plan could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Use the downtime to rework your original concepts and see where changes could be made. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might not be consciously fishing for compliments, but admit it -- won’t you feel great when your efforts are noticed? So accept the praise gracefully. You earned it. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of beauty in your personal life extends to your efforts to protect and preserve the natural world around you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.

If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd's diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak. • On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890.

See Your Eye Doctor (NAPS)—During May, the National Eye Institute’s (NEI) Healthy Vision Month—or anytime—it’s important to keep your eye on your vision health. After all, the NEI, part of the National Institutes of Health, points out that your eyes deliver 80 percent of the information you take in every day. Keep Your Eyes Healthy To help, Henry Schein Medical and Welch Allyn encourage patients to talk to their primary care physician and ophthalmologist about eight suggestions offered by NEI: • Get an eye exam: Many serious eye diseases don’t have any warning signs—so you could have an eye problem and not know it. Plus, you may not realize you could see better than you do. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the best way to stay on top of your eye health. • Know your family’s eye health history: Many eye diseases run in families. Talk to your relatives about their eye health. • Protect your eyes—at work and play: About 2,000 people in the United States get a serious work-related eye injury each day. People with sports-related eye injuries end up in the ER every 13 minutes. Wear protective eyewear, such as safety glasses, goggles and safety shields. • Give your eyes a rest: If you spend a lot of time at the computer (or focusing on another specific thing), you may sometimes forget to blink—which can tire out your eyes. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away and focus about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. • Wear sunglasses (even on cloudy days): They can protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Get a pair that blocks out at least 99 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. • Eat eye-healthy foods: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables— especially dark leafy greens, such as spinach or kale—is important for keeping your eyes healthy. Research also shows that fish high in omega-3 fatty acids—salmon, tuna and halibut—can help protect your vision. • Stay at a healthy weight: If you’re overweight or obese, you’re more likely to develop diabetes and other health problems that can lead to vision loss. • Get plenty of physical activity: Regular physical activity can protect you from serious eye disease. To help make eye health care easier for everyone, and advance vision health education, patients can benefit from new solutions available to doctors from Henry Schein Medical. One, the Welch Allyn® RetinaVue® 100 Imager care delivery model, helps preserve the vision of patients with diabetes with a simple five-minute eye exam during routine primary care visits. The other, the Welch Allyn Spot™ Vision Screener, is an instrumentbased screening device that can help physicians detect early signs of nearsightedness, farsightedness, blurred vision, unequal refractive power, eye misalignment and unequal pupil size among children as young as 6 months old. Learn More For more information about Healthy Vision Month and other resources, see https://nei.nih.gov/hvm. For doctors interested to learn more about the devices, visit www.henryschein.com/us-en/medical or call (800) 535-6663. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

• On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. • On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away.

On Friday, March 15th, we went to Krony’s as part of our weekend celebration for our 45th anniversary. As usual, the food is mouth-wateringly delicious! I have to credit the fine, outstanding staff that work diligently in the kitchen,

To the person who mentioned political correctness, insensitivity to the majority and the spirit of the season regarding wishing others a Merry Christmas. Acknowledging and respecting the beliefs of others during December is not about being “politically correct.” It is generally accepted that the spirit of the season is about love and generosity. Imposing one’s own personal beliefs on others flies in the face of this spirit. Further what one believes and how one expresses those beliefs is not subject to the “majority rules” system which only applies to elections. By wishing others “Happy Holidays” everyone is included and no one is excluded. It has nothing to do with being offended either, it has to do with equal treatment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

preparing our food. It was a Friday, so it was busy with quite a steady flow of orders to go. I have to start off with JOEY who always has such a charismatic personality. He takes the time to greet me, no matter how busy he is. Cindy is an inspiration. Charlie was friendly, and as for the rest, I don’t have your names, or can’t recall them. Sorry! Unlike another pizza establishment, you can expect CONSISTENTLY DELICIOUS food, coupled with FAST, COURTEOUS service from a FRIENDLY staff at KRONY’S. It

doesn’t get any better than that!!! THANKS!

Don’t you just love when your doctor’s office calls or leaves a message to verify the day and time of your appointment? It’s nice of them to remind us BUT it’s always followed by, “If you don’t cancel before 24 hours, you’ll be charged a late fee,” or “if you’re 5 minutes late, your appointment will be canceled and rescheduled at a later date.” Remind them of that courtesy call next time you are seen 1 to 2 hours past your appointment time. Suggest maybe a free coffee gift card if they can’t meet their appointment times. Bet you’ll get the “deer in the headlights look.”

Species are dying, and the ozone is damaged. What are we leaving for our children and grandchildren, if anything at all? Recycling and using reusable bags are all well and good, but it will be for nothing if we don’t hold those accountable who are content to kill the earth for the sake of profit. Now, is not the time for complacency; it is time for outrage.

It is so awful to go about everyday tasks with the knowledge that our earth is being destroyed, and all for the sake of greed.

I want to thank the secret snow angel in the black truck in Wheatland, who plowed the end of my driveway out all winter. in the doorway of Wal-Mart on Monday, April 29th. I’m so grateful that you were my angels. God Bless You!

Thank you to all those who braved the awful weather on Saturday, April 27th, to clean up their community as part of the Livingston County Cleanup Event. Your efforts were noticed and are appreciated. Thank you and kudos!

I would like to thank the kind gentleman and women who helped me up when I fell

It is the middle of April, and we are still debating the appropriateness of “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas?” Let’s move on, people. I appreciate your concern for this mistreated animal, but nothing will change for the poor creature unless someone defends him. Please consider contacting

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.
