TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. How can I get my hydrangeas to bloom? - Mary R. There are several reasons why macrophylla hydrangeas don’t bloom. They need winter protection to keep the buds from freezing. Deer often will eat the buds, which form the previous season. And often they gradually reduce their blooms each year because they don’t thrive in our cold winters. There are other kinds of hydrangeas that do bloom reliably in our weather. Both panicle hydrangeas and arborescens hydrangeas bloom very well here. The arborescens varieties are most deer resistant. I spray the buds on my panicle hydrangeas with deer re-

Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest and damaged.

T
he Canandaigua and 10 other surrounding area Lions Clubs worked together with funding and implementing ‘Lions Roar For Veterans”’ gift bags for Veterans hospitalized at the Canandaigua Veterans Medical Center (VAMC). The Lions gathered at Wood Library on Monday, March 25th, with Lions from 8 of those 11 Lions Clubs that provided 24 Lions to assemble the gift bags. During a Region Business Meeting held at the same time, Past District Governor (PDG) Rena Haigh delivered a brief but informative and inspirational talk on membership, including a hand-out for each Lion to take back to their clubs. The Canandaigua Lions set up gift bag assembly tables while the other clubs were having the Region meeting on Monday. Lion Diane Seward provided “Lions Roar for Veterans” graphics that were used on the bags, wine for door prize raffles, and sign-in and wine raffle management. Lion Melanie supported the Project Manager with supervising set up and implementing the assembly process, providing wine for raffling, purchasing and patience with the Project Manager. On Tuesday, March 26th, 10 clubs provided 14 Lions who distributed the gift bags directly to the Veterans Community Living Centers (CLC’s). A photo of a group of Lions (and a Leo) was taken at the Veterans Administration Voluntary Services (VAVS ) office. This year, Immediate Past District Governor (IPDG) Harold Bush once again provided a patriotic musical backdrop to our efforts. The Lions delivered 87 gift bags to three separate Community Living Centers (CLC’s) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). Each bag contained 6 personal care items especially selected for the Veterans with the assistance of the great people in Voluntary Services at the VAMC, including Gina Deck, John Fiero, and Robin Johnson. We also delivered a supply of sports, fishing etc. magazines to each CLC. We met Floor Supervisors Lydia and Deanna, Lions Club veterans gift bag. and Recreational Therapist Lucy, who are all doing a great job taking care of the daily needs of our Veterans. Rushville Leo’s contributed custom-made, ‘Thank You Veterans’ greeting cards again this year. Caleb Troy, a Bloomfield Leo, attended and was assigned the task of distributing the cards to the Veterans. Caleb attended with his father who is a Bloomfield Lion and a Veteran at the VAMC. Financial contributions came from Lions in Spencer-Candor, Geneva, Oswego, Ovid-Willard,
Lions Club members create gift bags for veterans.
Bloomfield, Pal-Mac, Phelps, Twin Cities, Rushville, Manchester-Shortsville and Canandaigua. Individual Lions also contributed: Past Council Chairman (PCC) Bill and PDG Lynn Williams (Rushville) and Victor President Jeff and Kayco Jarmusz. Donations from all Lions and Clubs were, as always, greatly appreciated! Without their support, this project would not happen! There was a major increase in the number of Veterans served this year compared to last year’s “Lions Roar for Veterans “ Program. The count went from 48 bags last year to 87 bags this year, due in most part to a very generous, special donation from the Spencer-Candor Lions! We very much appreciated their extraordinary contribution to this year’s Veterans Project! The success of this project was witnessed in the faces of the Veterans who received the benefit of the Gift Bags. All Lions who contributed in any way should feel a patriotic sense of pride in accomplishing a very positive impactful result. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? Add some photos, and your story will be featured on our popular website for all to see. Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Undereye bags can cause shadows to form and increase the appearance of dark circles. To remedy this, try to reduce fluid pooling in the face. Sleep elevated on a few pillows so that fluid flows away from the eyes. Reduce consumption of alcohol and salty foods, which can exacerbate fluid retention. Cool compresses can be used to massage fluid gently away from the eyes as well.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Husband Refuses to Wash His Hands ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 74 and in general good health. He never washes his hands when he comes in from working as a public accountant. He doesn’t wash his hands when he sneezes, or after touching meat and poultry when he cooks. He smokes and is a functioning alcoholic. He says it’s not necessary to wash fruit before you eat it and tells me I don’t know what I am talking about. He has been on Lipitor for several years and eats steak almost every night. On the other hand, I wash my hands when I come in from work and before preparing meals, and have always washed fruit before eating it. What’s his secret? Does he have strong genes? -- T.M. ANSWER: Eating well and taking good care of yourself don’t guarantee a long, healthy life. The converse is true as well. I have heard so many stories about Aunt Martha (or Gertrude or Helen), who drank, smoked and lived on bacon until she was 105, but your lifestyle does give you a better chance at living longer and healthier, and of feeling better right now. Smoking increases the risk of dying from any cause. A 74-yearold man who has smoked all his life has about the same risk of dying as an 82-year-old nonsmoker. One can do a similar risk analysis with diet. But some people, through a combination of good genes and good luck, manage to live long, healthy lives despite poor lifestyle choices. Even though some individuals will not have the expected outcome, smoking is still bad. So is eating steak every night. Washing (or at least rinsing) produce is a good idea. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Recently, Golden Coin Laundry/Dry Cleaning was kindly helpful, without their customer even asking. A partly disabled, senior citizen was helped getting some drapes with special instructions washed, then when dry and pressed, back out into the car again. There was good, honest, communication So tonight, I was out walking my dog in our peaceful village as I often do. My dog is, of course, leashed with doggy bags on hand and is on the municipal side grass. My dog is in her senior years and likes to stop and piddle periodically, even if there’s nothing left. Out of nowhere, this woman pulls over and proceeds to proclaim that I must pick up the dog poop, insinuating my dog had pooped in her yard, with a hoity toity attitude. My dog had not pooped at all, and if she had, I certainly don’t need to be pre-advised of my responsibilities. The woman quickly rushed away, surely realizing her own arrogance and haste. My dog is a good judge of character, and we both concur hers really stinks!
and empathetic, capable assistance. That was such good, local customer service, one could recommend them for future business. Thank you, Golden Coin.
The Avon Circle looks beautiful with the Military banners hanging and the gardens planted and starting to bloom. The Avon Garden Club always does a beautiful job with the flowers throughout the village. The help from the village crew makes it all possible too. Without the volunteers and village crew it wouldn’t be possible. Thank you and Happy Memorial Day!
new units. Two electricians showed up on time but slow walked the job. After 3 hours, both of them had only managed to install 4 thermostats total. Turns out they were overheard talking to each other about how they had hooked the wires up incorrectly, and when the units were placed back in the wall, the wires actually came loose! These novice mistakes, including troubleshooting them, took up valuable time that we were paying for by the hour. When I contacted the owner to voice my concern, he unfortunately made more excuses for his employees than he did offers to help me, his customer. I felt duped.
put on a grave need to be brought back or enforced. It looks trashy. You will find Christmas decorations, Easter decorations, multiple containers of fake flowers, multiple figurines, and even beer cans, beer cans on graves of young people who died because of alcohol. This is not showing respect for the dead. We are in May, and the holiday wreaths are still on the graves. I understand our need to grieve and to display our love for someone who has passed, but we can’t overdue and infringe on the rights of neighboring graves. We have to keep things neat. Please, everyone go clean up your loved one’s grave.

Recently an individual commented within a post about increasing hate towards certain groups across the country. I have to disagree with that and am offended by that opinion.
Page 14
I have no hate feeling for any group and hope that the poster of that comment feels the same way. We, as a country, need to move forward. Just a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of our service members, who put their lives in harm’s way to protect our values and way of life. Just because people have money, doesn’t mean they are above the law. Compare your house to your rental? Really? That means you, Mr. & Mrs. Landlord, for not providing a rental that was up to standards and codes. Talk about multiple violations!!! You both should receive citations.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. WAYS TO REPURPOSE DRESSERS One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Nothing can be more frustrating than wanting to begin a project only to spend precious time looking for tools. Almost as important as the investment in tools is the investment in tool storage. Hardwood or metal tool chests feature various drawers and cabinets that can house tools of different sizes. By keeping tools in a chest, they’re easy to find and more likely to stay sharp and in good condition. Metal tools should be stored in a cool, dry area, as dust and moisture can cause rusting issues on metal tools. One way to alleviate rust is to spray metal tools with a product like WD-40 to serve as a moisture barrier, then store them in closed drawers or containers. All tools do not necessarily have to be stored in a garage or work shed. Many homeowners like to keep smaller tools in the house so that frequently used items are within reach. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There’s nothing an Aries Lamb likes less than having to tackle a humdrum task. But finding a creative way to do it can make all the difference. A more exciting time awaits you this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Finishing up a job on time leaves you free to enjoy your weekend without any Taurean guilt pangs. A romantic attitude from an unlikely source could take you by surprise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Moving in a new career direction might be seen by some as risky. But if you have both the confidence to see it through and the facts to back you up, it could prove rewarding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Holding back on a decision might be difficult, considering how long you’ve waited for this opportunity. But until you’re able to resolve all doubts, it could be the wiser course to take. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You still need to move carefully where financial matters are concerned. Better for the Lion to move slowly than pounce on a “promising” prospect that doesn’t keep its promises. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A rejection of an idea you believe in can be upsetting. But don’t let it discourage you. Get yourself back on track and use what you’ve learned from the experience to try again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The early part of the week could find you looking to balance your priorities between your family obligations and your career responsibilities. Pressures begin to ease by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An associate’s problem could cause unavoidable delays in moving ahead with your joint venture. If so, use the time to look into another project you had previously set aside. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Although a financial problem could be very close to being resolved in your favor, it’s still a good idea to avoid unnecessary spending for at least a little while longer. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Support for some unwelcome workplace decisions begins to show up, and continues to build, so that by week’s end, the gregarious Goat is as popular as ever. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Congratulations. Deciding to attend a social function you might have earlier tried to avoid could turn out to be one of the best decisions you’ve made in a long time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting into a new situation could prove to be a more difficult experience than you expected. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice in coping with some of the more irksome challenges. BORN THIS WEEK: Your strong sense of duty makes you a valued and trusted member of your community. Have you considered a career in law enforcement? (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 27, 1941, the British navy sinks the German battleship Bismarck in the North Atlantic near France, where it fled because it was leaking fuel. The German death toll was more than 2,000. Three days earlier, the Bismarck had sunk the British battlecruiser Hood.
Show Mom You Care: Have A Conversation About Long Term Care Insurance (NAPS)—This year, as you look back at the many years your mother cared for you, consider the possibility that she may require care herself someday. Long term care insurance can help ensure that your mother will get the care she needs, should there come a time when she requires help managing some of the activities we associate with independent living. Millions of Americans require long term care during their lifetime,1 which includes assistance with simple tasks like bathing, eating and dressing—trivial things we do every day without a second thought. In reality, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. It’s important to keep in mind that women, in general, live longer than men. This means that women may be more likely to need care at some point in their lives than their male counterparts.2 Should that need arise—whether it’s assistance to perform activities of daily living or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment—it’s likely to be provided by a family member or friend. Unfortunately, this may not be an ideal option, with many families living far apart from each other. And, your mother may not be willing to place that burden on you or even a close friend. The good news is, she is eligible to apply for coverage under the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). Encourage your qualified relatives to plan now The best time for your family members to consider long term care insurance is long before they need it. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important for your qualified relatives to apply when they are in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or condition may prevent them from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means the younger people are when they apply for coverage, the lower their premium. You may wish to consider applying for coverage as well, as a way to help secure your family’s future. With benefits designed specifically for the federal family, the FLTCIP offers a smart way to help protect your savings and assets should you or your loved ones need long term care services someday. Many members of the federal family are eligible to apply for coverage under the FLTCIP, including federal and U.S. Postal Service employees and annuitants, as well as active and retired members of the uniformed services. Certain family members, or qualified relatives, are also eligible. Qualified relatives include your spouse, domestic partner, parents and parents-in-law, and adult children. For a complete list of who is eligible to apply, visit LTCFEDS. com/eligibility. For personalized assistance, call (800) LTC-FEDS ( (800) 5823337)/TTY (800) 843-3557 to speak with a program consultant. 1 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
