(NAPSI)—People often think of the New Year as a time to set new goals for healthy eating and physical activity. But weight management requires ongoing effort, during the holidays and every day. That’s why the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health, is promoting simple tips and tools to help Americans start and maintain healthy habits.

WE’RE ON GRUBHUB & DOORDASH FISH FRY $999 + tax

“Why wait to start improving your health when you can start today?” NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers said in a statement. “It’s never too soon or too late to achieve a healthy weight.” Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight through healthy food choices and regular physical activity may help lower the risk of developing health problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes. About 40 percent of adults and 19 percent of children and teens in the United States have obesity, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Continue or establish healthier eating habits, such as reducing the overall calories you consume and limiting your intake of foods and beverages with added sugars, fats and salt. Bringing healthier versions of your favorite dishes to holiday gatherings, and choosing smaller portions of holiday treats and alcohol, may help with managing weight during this time of year.

The NIDDK recommends making physical activity a priority for the whole family. Choosing a set time for physical activity and sticking to it may help you manage stress, improve your mood, and give you the energy to tackle your busy schedule. If it’s too cold to walk or run outdoors, take your workout to your favorite mall or indoor sports field. Even if you’re pressed for time, doing some physical activity is better than skipping your workout and doing nothing. Another tip to consider during the holiday season and every day to improve health and manage weight is to reduce screen time and time spent sitting. Watching TV for more than two hours a day has been linked to overweight and obesity. Try creating a holiday-themed playlist and having a dance party. You can have fun dancing alone or with family or friends. To further encourage adults and youth to be active, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also recently released new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The new Guidelines recommend that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, such as brisk walking or dancing. Youth ages six through 17 need one hour each day, and children ages three through six should be active throughout the day. By establishing and sticking to healthy habits, parents, caregivers and youth may achieve better health together during the holiday season and beyond. To find more tips and resources for weight management and healthy living during the holidays and every day, visit the NIDDK website: https://www. niddk.nih.gov/health-information/weight-management.

264-0076 NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “I use an ice-cube tray to freeze leftover coffee so I can use it for iced coffee. It’s great because the coffee doesn’t water down -- it just gets richer. I save broth this way, too. Last week I pulled out a couple cubes of what I thought were broth to thin my leftover chili. Turns out they were coffee cubes, and the flavor was really good! I was surprised enough that I had to share.” -- R.F. in Virginia GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

INTERIOR PAINTING

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Better to Sleep on Left Side or Right? ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a man in my late 50s. I now am told to sleep on my right side and not my left side, because it’s better for the heart. However, my sinuses seem to open up and it’s easier to breathe lying on my left side. What, if anything, will happen if I sleep on my left side? Can it damage the heart permanently or lead to an early death? -- M.N. ANSWER: Most people can sleep in whatever position they find comfortable without any problem. However, there are a few instances in which sleeping on the left side may potentially cause problems. One is in people with untreated obstructive sleep apnea, in which several studies have shown that sleeping on the left side leads to slightly more breathing problems than sleeping on the right. However, in people who are treated, that should not be a problem. Pregnant women should sleep on their side. Although women have often been recommended to sleep on their left side, either side is fine for the baby. Left-sided sleeping may reduce swelling in the feet. People with known severe congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease and who habitually sleep on the left side have a small increase in death compared with back or right-side sleepers. However, my opinion is that the benefit is so small that comfort and quality of sleep is more important.

EXPERT ADVICE FOR COLLEGE-BOUND GRADS “What separated me from the masses was ‘connecting’ with a faculty member. I didn’t even know what the possibilities were until he laid out a ‘roadmap’ and showed me a few shortcuts to get there. When my confidence was shaky, he reminded me that I could do it.” - Graduate, University of Michigan.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that many runners drink too much water and that this can be dangerous. What are the signs of drinking too much? -- H.C. ANSWER: Exercise-associated hyponatremia (“hypo” means “too little,” and “natremia” means “sodium in the blood”) is common for endurance athletes, such as long-distance triathletes and marathoners. It is caused by losing salt and water, mostly through sweat, and replacing it with only water. Most cases are mild and have few symptoms, but if there are symptoms, they are most commonly weakness, headache and dizziness. Severe cases cause disorientation and can lead to seizures and death. In a study of the Boston Marathon in 2002, 13% of finishers had hyponatremia, but only 1% had critical levels. To avoid hyponatremia, you need to ignore the advice to “drink as much as possible” during exercise. Further, most sports drinks do not have enough sodium to protect against hyponatremia. As simple as the advice is, drinking when you are thirsty when you exercise is the best way of preventing hyponatremia while still preventing volume depletion or dehydration. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote last year about cod liver oil as a source of vitamin D and omega-3. Can you recommend a brand? -- M.E.T. ANSWER: I don’t like to recommend specific brands unless there are scientific studies showing a difference between brands, which I can’t find with cod liver oil. However, I would look for a brand that is labeled “certified USP,” meaning it is tested for contaminants, and one that has a low vitamin A level (below 10,000 IU daily). You also might want one with high (450 mg or greater) EPA plus DPA (the most commonly recommended omega-3 fats). *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable. Page 11

DECKS

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this “ornery” mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull’s eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people “letting you down” or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. Best to act when you know you’re making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your “tough love” attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings is discovered near Montignac, France. They depict 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols and nearly 1,500 engravings from the Upper Paleolithic period some 16,000 years ago.

The facts about glaucoma When one’s vision is compromised, his or her whole life can change in the blink of an eye. Many conditions can affect a person’s vision, and one of the more common is glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness across the globe. The global impact of glaucoma is significant. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people are blind due to glaucoma. In addition, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness notes that some estimates have suggested that there will be approximately 80 million people with glaucoma by 2020. If such estimates prove true, that would mean an additional 20 million cases of glaucoma were diagnosed between 2010 and 2020. Vision loss is often associated with glaucoma. However, the National Eye Institute notes that early detection and treatment can protect the eyes against serious vision loss. That makes it imperative that individuals from all walks of life learn about glaucoma, its risk factors and how to recognize it. What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve. When such damage occurs, vision loss and even blindness can result. What is the optic nerve and why does it matter? The NEI notes that the optic nerve is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers that connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the lightsensitive tissue at the back of the eye that contains cells which are sensitive to light. These cells trigger nerve impulses that pass via the optic nerve to the brain, where visual images are then formed. Because its role is so significant, the optic nerve must be healthy for good vision. What are the most common types of glaucoma? According to the IAPB, primary open angle glaucoma, or POAG, and primary angle closure glaucoma, or PACG, are the most common types of the condition. POAG is most common in white Caucasians and black individuals of African origin, while PACG, which is associated with a greater risk of blindness than POAG, is most common in people from southeast Asia. The Glaucoma Research Foundation says that POAG develops slowly and is the most common form of glaucoma and is caused by the slow clogging of the drainage canals that produces increased pressure on the eye. PACG, which the GRF notes is quick to develop, results when the drainage canals are blocked, resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure. What are the symptoms of glaucoma? Because POAG develops slowly, its symptoms often go unnoticed. Symptoms of PACG, however, are often very noticeable and may include severe and sudden eye pain; blurred vision; bright halos appearing around objects; eye redness, tenderness, and hardness; and nausea and vomiting. Can glaucoma be treated? While there is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost to it cannot be restored, the NEI notes that treatment for early-stage POAG can effectively delay progression of the disease. A giant thank you to Steve Clarke (and the entire Clarke family) in Groveland Station for helping Jim and me with our emergencies. You are wonderful neighbors, and we can’t thank you enough.

A couple of weeks ago, a grandmother and her three granddaughters each made a couple of batches of cookies. They packaged them, set up little stands in their neighborhoods in different areas of Avon and sold the cookies. They received over $250 that they then took to a grocery store to buy food for the Avon Food Pantry. They brought the groceries

Sassy’s story in the August 23rd edition of Pet Pal touched my heart more than any other I have read. I hope that Sassy and her Mom are together for many more years to come. Her picture is especially heartwarming. She looks like such a sweet girl.

While at a local restaurant and inn, having eaten our food, we left our payment in the bill holders and left. Someone stole the money we left for one of our bills (We had 3 separate checks.) That money had to be replaced by the young waitress we had. It came out of her pocket. The person who took the money had no conscience. Needless to say, I will never leave until the money gets to the waitress from now on. So, everyone, please make sure your payment gets to the waitress, including any tip. It is not fair that they lose money because someone else is a thief!

I would rather my neighbor mow nightly between 5-8pm maintaining their yard instead of letting their yard turn into a tick paradise. Maybe you could offer to help you neighbor, or you could move to a city or town. True country folk would not bat an eye at this. Be a kind person and talk to your neighbor to learn their story. Good luck.

I am an elderly woman who has lived in several places across the country. I have always appreciated the work that [business] does. Through the years, my family, friends and I have made donations of clothing and household furnishings. We have always been impressed by the friendliness, courtesy and assistance the staff have given us. In most places, the staff members come right out and cheerfully offer to help to unload the car. I am downsizing and have started my donations. Recently I parked near the entrance to the Donation Center, went in and asked for assistance. I was ignored at first, then told, “We can’t leave

the front door. If we do, we get yelled at.” I was grudgingly given a cart. I am concerned about the heavier items I will be bringing soon. I now feel that my donations are unwanted. Please keep your mess out of the street when mowing your yard. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also be hazardous. Last year, my husband ran over grass in the road, and unfortunately, a bolt from the mower was in the debris and punctured his tire. The tire deflated quickly. This could have caused a blowout which could have ended badly. It’s your grass; keep it in your own yard.

R Community Bikes Inc: Helping Others Move Forward By Amanda Dudek

“T

here were two of us, and we fixed one flat tire at St. Joe’s.” That’s how Program Director Dan Lill describes the 2001 beginnings of R Community Bikes, Inc. “Word got out that there were these guys who could fix bikes,” he recalled, referring to St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality on South Avenue in Rochester. “A lot of the men who stayed there were riders, so they started bringing in their bikes, and things just developed from there.” R Community Bikes, a 501c3 nonprofit, repairs donated bikes and offers them to “Rochester’s most needy adults and children” free of charge. With 150-180 volunteers, R Community Bikes gives away approximately 2,500 bikes while it fixes 3,000 more each year. Since it started, R Community Bikes has given away approximately 36,000 bicycles and has repaired over 40,000. “To our people, bikes are a big deal,” explained Lill. “Since we started, the need grew and grew. We’re giving people transportation, an essential part of the puzzle which gets them to their program, appointment, job and doctor.” “When I retired from teaching in 2002, I wanted to work in anything that began with “H” said Lill. “Hospice: I did that for about 10 years. Habitat for Humanity: I am not good with my hands and tools, so I eliminated that one. House of Hospitality: I did that, and this fell into my hands.” R Community Bikes quickly outgrew St. Joseph’s, moving to its current 226 Hudson Avenue location in 2005 and incorporating as a 501c3 nonprofit in 2008. They also began giving away children’s bikes. R Community Bikes also sells the higher-end bicycles it receives, starting at around $100, to help offset expenses. “A lot of these bikes require special equipment and have special features which your average cyclist would not use,” explained Lill. In 2014, R Community Bikes began providing tricycles to adults with permanent, severe disabilities. “They are in demand,” said Lill. “It is just wonderful to be able to help.”

Dan Lill Da Lill, R Community Co it Bikes, Bike Inc. I Founder Fo de

R Community Bikes also keeps many bikes out of landfills. “Multiply 36,000 bikes by the weight of a bike, and that is how much we have kept out of landfills,” Lill pointed out proudly. “It is an ancillary benefit of what we are doing. Many of us never set out to be environmentalists, although we are by default. We also salvage whatever we can.” The Parts Department is dedicated to Andre and Mary. Andre used to sell bikes out of his house on Driving Park Avenue. When he passed away, Mary donated approximately $10,000 of brand-new parts to R Community Bikes. The program relies on donations and is operated 100% by volunteers. “Our volunteers include machinists, scientists, former Kodak executives, WEP workers doing their community services hours, and you can’t tell the difference,” shared Lill. R Community Bikes also offers a little, free library. “It’s one of only two or three in Rochester’s inner city,” shared Lill. “We are trying to promote bicycles and books.”

R Community Bikes, Inc. promotes bikes and books!

Lill is working on a book of his own. “I have chronicled a lot of the stories of both the volunteers and the recipients,” he said. “One of my favorite stories is about one man who would take his bike and tow a lawn mower behind it. I told him about the book. ‘You’re going to be in it,’ I said. ‘No, no, you should be in the book,’ he said, ‘I’m not going to be in the book,’ I answered. ‘You curve lives,’ he replied. ‘What?’ I said. ‘You curve lives,’ he insisted. So, there are lives going in this direction, and all of the sudden, they turn around, and I was like…” Lill clasped his hand over his heart. “That just cemented him into the book!” “We had another man come by, and he had $1.16 in his hand, four quarters, a dime, a nickel and a penny,” Lill continued. “I said to him, ‘Steve, what’s that all about?’ He said, ‘That’s what I got left over.’ I said, ‘Left over from what?’ He said, ‘From my job that I got because you gave me a bike.’ While this doesn’t happen every day, these are things that stick with Lill, making it easy for him to come in every day. R Community Bikes, Inc. is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at their headquarters at 226 Hudson Ave. Bike giveaways take place only on Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning at 9:15 AM. Bike repairs, free of charge, are completed at the headquarters and in the summer, at five satellite locations. VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “If you have to put a lid over something that is likely to stick to it, try giving the inside of the lid a very light coating of vegetable oil. I do this when I am transporting dip to a potluck. Vegetable oil has no flavor, really, and it’s just enough to let the lid come off without taking the top layer with it.” -- J.A. in Florida GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
