Prevent stairway injuries Stairs are a necessity in many homes. While stairs serve a practical purpose, they also have the potential to be dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, more than one million injuries result each year from stairway falls. Staircase and stairway accidents constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury, second only to motor vehicle accidents. Each year, there are 12,000 stairway accident deaths. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation states that a large portion of Canadians who visit hospitals after a fall on or from stairs or steps in their homes are seniors (men and women age 65 years or older). However, many stairway falls can be prevented with some simple planning. · Install sturdy handrails. A common contributor to stairway falls is a failure to use handrails. Sturdy handrails can decrease fall rates. Even if a person slips, he or she may be able to prevent the fall by grabbing on to the handrails and regaining some of his or her balance. · Rely on highlighters or friction strips. According to a study titled, “Safety on stairs: Influence of a tread edge highlighter and its position,” by Richard J. Foster, fall risk may be reduced by using a highlighter positioned flush with the tread edge. This helps make stairs more visible, particularly for those with impaired vision. · Improve lighting on staircases. Failure to see steps may contribute to falls as well. Staircases should be well lit so that residents and guests know where to step. Subtle

foot-level lighting can be installed to make it easier for people who frequently use steps at night. · Use slip-resistant materials. Slip-resistant surface material acceptable for normal floors should work on stair treads. Loose rugs should not be placed at the top or bottom of the landing. Outdoors, rough finishes are recommended, particularly on stairs that are subject to getting wet. · Improve step geometry. If slips and falls frequently occur on a particular staircase, consider the relationship between the rise and the run, advises the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. The National Building Code of Canada says that, within a staircase, treads should have a uniform run and tread depth that does not vary more than 0.5 to 1 cm. Steep steps with high risers and/or short treads can increase the risk of falls. · Clear away clutter. One easy way to prevent falls is to keep stairs free of clutter. This means removing shoes, toys and other belongings that may be left on stairs or landings. Many falls on stairs can be prevented by being mindful of certain risk factors.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman with diabetes. My body, as I have been told, is bad with arthritis, for which I have been prescribed Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few months now, and am definitely moving around with a lot less pain. I recently watched a program that devoted the entire hour to Celebrex. It scared me out of my wits upon hearing the side effects of the medicine. I am asking your advice about whether to stop taking the Celebrex. -- S.A. ANSWER: All medicines have risks, and in order to decide whether you should keep taking the medicine, you need to really understand what the risks are and balance them against the benefits you feel in your ability to move around more easily. In the case of Celebrex, we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. Like all related drugs (including ibuprofen and naproxen), celecoxib (Celebrex) can damage the kidneys, so it isn’t recommended for people with kidney disease. There also can be allergic reactions, which may be related to allergies to sulfa drugs. A few people have had vision changes. However, the most concerning risk is heart disease -- both heart attacks and heart failure. These risks definitely are increased among users of celecoxib. However, the absolute risk is small: There were about two extra cases of all heart events, including heart attack and heart failure, per thousand people taking 400 mg once daily, and six extra events in people taking 400 mg twice daily. Those risks probably are higher if you are at increased risk for heart disease (which you probably are, because of your diabetes), but it still means less than 1 percent of people per year. If the medicine isn’t helping, the risk certainly isn’t worth it. However, only you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit. Drug companies get into big trouble when they try to hide the risks of their medications, and honesty demands that we admit that all drugs and supplements have risks. Only you can make that decision, but I think it’s up to us as doctors to have a frank discussion, especially about medications intended to be taken long-term. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female. My doctor told me four years ago that I would need a Pap test only every two years, which I have done. She told me recently that I would not need to have any more. My tests have always been negative. I am concerned, as I would rather be proactive and know early if I had cancer. What is your opinion, and what does the American Cancer Society say? -- B.L.S. ANSWER: All of the leading organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have recommended stopping screening at age 65 for women with no history of cancer and who have had adequate screening, meaning three negative Pap smears (or two negative combination Pap and HPV tests) in the past 10 years, with at least one in the past five years. The risk for cancer in this specific group is very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. A big Thank You to Gretchen, Tammy and all the other amazing moms who put on the annual Gift away at the Brockport Elks Lodge! Because of you, hundreds of children will have gifts for the holidays. A special thanks to everyone who donated! I want to thank the people who volunteer their time and resources for the many needed activities in our communities. Also, those who work diligently to cover end of the year vacations in any business, seasonal staff who often work long and sometimes thankless hours, and our emergency and road crews who work through the night to keep us safe, a big THANK YOU! For at least 20 years I have avoided going to the dentist because of fear. Needless to say I needed a lot of dental work done. I was having a lot of pain, and that’s when I found White

Spruce Dental. They were professional and caring, but most of all they did not criticize me for neglecting my teeth. I am no longer afraid of going to the dentist, which is huge for me! Dr. Nozik and his entire staff are wonderful. I would like to say a special thank you to Lisa and Zeypeh. I recommend this office all the time and will continue to do so. Suzanne

This year, I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. I have encountered many wonderful service providers along this journey that have been so kind to me during this time. From receptionists, doctors, customer service people at my insurance company, to my hair stylist who helped me cut my hair since it was falling out. I have been treated better than I ever have in my life. While I really appreciate people’s caring nature and friendly ways, I challenge this mindset at the same time. I shouldn’t be treated any differently because I have a disease. We are all fighting a battle of some sort in our lives. Your battle may not be my battle, but it’s important whatever it may be. about abuse of animals by psycho killers who progress to committing these crimes on humans.

How long does it take to repair the bridges? This work has been going on for months and still isn’t totally completed yet. It seems that there is a mini crew taking their time on this job. Traffic is backed up due to lane closures all along this route and sometimes no work is even taking place at all. It sure seems like this small crew of workers is taking their sweet time with little regard to the motorists trying to get to work or home after work. Everyone knows we can avoid offensive sites, but there is one thing I don’t understand. A site I used to enjoy has so many beautiful photos of flowers and my greatest love, animals. I was browsing baby animals and the most gruesome photos were included in this pin. It only took one to get me weeping and turning off my computer, although there were many more. Cruelty is not normal. We all know

To the person who vented in the last Penny Saver about having to spend $0.02 for an envelope and $0.46 for a stamp to pay your High School tax: If you are leaving NYS because of $0.48 it sounds like you have a first world problem. Also it seems that you are paying all of your bills with checks since you emphasized that you didn’t get a return envelope as you do with your other bills. Welcome to 2016 where we have this thing called the internet. You’re squawking about paying $0.48 and threatening about being the next one to leave NYS... Feel free to leave. Trust me... the money you pay for your high school taxes and $0.48 to pay the bill to send in your archaic check won’t be missed. Ciao! Can the village and water / sewer please fix the manhole covers? The last paving by the village added too much material without having the manholes covers raised. My car will be out of alignment or someone will swerve and hit oncoming traffic.

Livonia Third-Graders Make a Difference in the Lives of Homeless Animals During the month of December, four third-graders put their passion for homeless animals and their plight to find their “fur-ever” homes to work by creating a campaign in conjunction with Livonia Central School to raise awareness of and bring in donations for Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats. Ultimately, they wanted to give pets a good Christmas even if they didn’t have homes.

Sophie Beikirch, Gabby Peri, Aubrey Rivera and Molly Rowe researched several areas to donate to before coming up with Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats and then looked at the organizations’ websites to see what supplies the groups needed. After brainstorming their idea, they presented their plan to Principal Whittle who ultimately approved their idea. With the support of third-grade teacher Mrs. Willow Johnston, the girls worked hard on creating signs and making announcements to fellow students in the elementary school. Parents helped by posting the details of the drive on social media sites. Bins were put out in the school to accept donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, toys, blankets and towels, leashes and halters. They were able

to collect enough donations to fill the backs of two vehicles! Of course, without the support of their fellow students, teachers, administration and parents this would not have been possible. It was a true display of the meaning of small community support. The girls want everyone to know they can make a difference, too, by donating to these groups or even by adopting one of the many pets that are ready for adoption. Secret s t o k eeping an organized shed A w ell-organized shed can save homeow ners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or delay a project if you can’t find that pair of w ork gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just w hat needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. M ake a pile of anything that w ill be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of w hat you have so you know w hether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another. Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap w ood to use to make your ow n storage shelves or a w ork bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember w here items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the w all so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of w hich tools are missing and w hich ones need to be purchased. Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they w ill alw ays be easily accessible. You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed w all to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. M etal funnels can hold tw ine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe. M ake sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the law nmow er, w heelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 17, 1893, on the Hawaiian Islands, American sugar planters under Sanford Ballard Dole overthrow the Hawaiian monarch and establish a new provincial government with Dole as president. The coup occurred with the knowledge of the U.S. minister to Hawaii, and 300 U.S. Marines were called, allegedly to protect American lives. DID YOU KNOW? While parents often struggle to get their children to put down their devices and/or turn off the television, an unscientific 2014 study from researchers at Boston University Medical Center discovered that parents might just be the ones who need to step away from their smartphones. Dr. Jenny Radesky, a developmental pediatrician, and two fellow researchers observed 55 separate groups of caregivers, oftentimes parents, and young children dining at restaurants around Boston. Of the 55 caregivers under observation, 40 used mobile devices during the meal and 16 used such devices throughout the meal. In addition, Radesky and her fellow researchers noticed that children whose caregivers were most absorbed in their devices were more likely to act out.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!

7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

CLIENT SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE:

Avoid high-fat foods at lunchtime. Foods that are high in fat should always be avoided thanks to their connection to a host of health problems. Such foods also negatively affect energy levels when consumed in the middle of the day. The University of Rochester Medical Center notes that the body digests and absorbs high-fat foods very slowly. That means workers who eat highfat foods for lunch won’t get the afternoon energy boost that lowfat, healthy lunches will provide.

Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.
