INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK After fleeing captivity, Saint Patrick said that the idea to flee came to him in a dream in which a voice promised him that, if he fled, he would safely find his way home to England. So he convinced sailors to let him board their ship. This was a ship those on board would soon abandon, eventually landing in France, where they wandered 200 miles in 28 days. But true to his dream, Saint Patrick was eventually reunited with his family in England.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Workout Supplements Are Sum of Their Parts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, in his mid-20s, uses a preworkout energy supplement to which I am opposed. Can you tell me if this is harmful so that I can show him scientific research and your educated and medically sound response? The supplement he uses contains alanine 1 g, creatine 1 g, arginine 1 g, tyrosine and velvet bean seed extract. It also contains 150 mg caffeine. -- B.G. ANSWER: It’s not always easy to tell what supplements are safe or effective for the condition they are marketed for, and the information available through a web search often is biased. One place I start to get information is Medline Plus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/), which has reliable information about many supplements, but you often have to search individually. In this case, alanine, arginine and tyrosine all are amino acids. These are the building blocks for proteins, and are safe in reasonable amounts. Creatine is generally safe for adults, and has been shown modestly effective at helping improve strength in young male weightlifters. One gram is a fairly low dose and is generally considered safe. The 150 mg of caffeine is about the same as a cup of strong coffee. Velvet bean seed extract I had to look up. It has been used both as a food crop and in traditional medicines. It has toxicity at high doses, but at the dose in the supplement, it should be safe. In summary, I think this supplement is not likely to be harmful if taken in recommended doses, and it might have some small benefit. There is nothing in the supplement that cannot be obtained easily and cheaply from food, apart from the velvet bean, which I think has the least proof of benefit of all the components of the supplement. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 49 years old and in good health. I recently was told by my doctor that what was first diagnosed as a swollen lymph is actually a condition called carotidynia. Can you please publish some information about this condition and what I can expect? Sometimes it is worse than at other times, but it never really goes away. I would not consider it painful; it is just uncomfortable, and when severe, it radiates up into my ear and down into my chest. -- S.W. ANSWER: Carotidynia (literally, “pain in the carotid artery”) can come from several distinct causes, some of which are catastrophic, such as a carotid artery dissection, which is a tearing of the lining of the artery. In some cases, carotidynia may be a form of migraine. After surgery or angioplasty to the carotid artery, one also can get pain that comes from the carotid itself. In the case of no other cause being identified, the condition is sometimes called idiopathic (which simply means “of unknown cause”) carotidynia, and some, but not all, experts think this condition comes from a type of inflammation around the artery, which can sometimes be seen on CT or MRI scan. Idiopathic carotidynia is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medicines -- ibuprofen, or prednisone in more severe cases. Most cases respond quickly, in a few days or up to a few weeks. However, I want to emphasize the need to thoroughly search for other concerning causes of neck pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? The Internet has made it easier than ever before to access information quickly. But people who look to the Internet for answers to their medical questions may be doing themselves more harm than good. A 2013 study from the Pew Research Center found that one-third of study participants had gone online to diagnose a medical condition. While the Internet can be a valuable resource, self-diagnosing medical conditions can be dangerous, as the risk of misdiagnosing signs or symptoms is considerable. But misdiagnosis is not the only potential problem of relying on the Internet instead of certified physicians for medical advice. “Cyberchondria” is a term used to described the unfounded escalation of concerns about certain symptoms a person might be experiencing. These unfounded concerns escalate as individuals search for and read information about their symptoms online. In fact, a 2008 Microsoft analysis of online search patterns found that one-third of the hundreds of thousands of people examined in the analysis tended to escalate their medical-related searches, potentially turning relatively minor medical conditions into something far worse, all without consulting a doctor. Men and women concerned about symptoms or medical problems should resist the temptation to self-diagnose online and should book an appointment with their physicians instead.

Are You “a Little Irish?” By Amanda Dudek Courtesy of The Ontario County Historical Society of the leading men of Canandaigua who was prominently interested in the construction of the Erie Canal. Port Gibson, the only village in Ontario county which touched the Canal, was named in his honor. Glasner described early Irish immigrants, like Henry Gibson, as brave, hearty people. “Many came before the steamship was invented; a perilous journey by sailing ship that took months, and they were not always welcome,” a fact epitomized in an American Ballad, ca. 1880. “I’m a decent boy just landed from the town of Ballyfadd. I want a situation; yes, I want it might bad. I seen employment advertised, ‘Tis just the thing, says I. But the dirty spalspeen ended with ‘No Irish need apply.’” John Flannigan’s Regionally Famous Oyster House, est est. 1867 1867. Photo courtesy of the Ontario County Historical Society.

Y

ou may have heard people say that we’re all a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. If you live in New York, there is a good chance this is actually true! According to Forbes, Albany, Syracuse and Long Island all rank in the top ten list of America’s Most Irish Metros. Another source reveals the Greater Rochester Area’s most Irish city, using data from the U. S. Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey and only considering places which have populations of 10,000 or more. With approximately 24% of residents claiming Irish heritage, lucky Canandaigua came in first as the local most Irish city. Edward Varno of the Ontario County Historical Society and Museum generously provided information regarding Canandaigua’s Irish heritage. “In 1983, the museum displayed an exhibit entitled, ‘Citizens by Choice: An Ethnic History of Ontario County,’ by Laura Glasner,” stated Varno. Glasner’s research offers unique insight into the history of the Irish population in Canandaigua and across Western New York. “Of the European immigrants, the first to arrive in large numbers were the Irish,” wrote Glasner. She explained that while the building of the Erie Canal and the first railroads brought Irishmen across New York in the 1820’s and 30’s, the large Irish settlements arose after the major emigrations during the 1840’s. “The largest emigration of all came during the years of the potato famine,” she stated. “Between 1845-1850, nearly 1,000,000 people in Ireland died and more than 1,000,000 emigrated to America. In these five years, Ireland lost 1/4 of its population.” According to Glasner, many Irish families lived on property owned by landlords, and they used their crops to pay their rent. When the potato blight left many without income or food, they were evicted by the thousands. “The Irish came to the United States en masse,” Glasner wrote. “Their descendants who remember their grandparents [these first immigrants] only recall that they had no desire to reminisce about their homeland. For most, the memories were bitter.” A pamphlet published by the Irish Emigrant Society of New York confirms that these Irish men and women arrived in impoverished condition, stating, “Thousands continually land entirely penniless and are at once in a state of destitution.” Even so, these Irish immigrants didn’t let this stop them from “becoming responsible and respected community members [who] contributed to the economic, cultural and social fabric of their communities.” According to Glasner, large Irish communities, which were mostly Catholic in a very Protestant country, were also often responsible for the establishment of local Catholic churches, citing the formation of Roman Catholic congregations during the mid-1800s (Canandaigua 1844, Rushville 1853 and Victor 1856). One notable Canandaiguan whom Glasner mentioned, Henry Gibson, was a resident of Irish ancestry. Gibson was a key figure in the development of successful banking in the village and was also important in the early railroad interests. Glasner related that in 1820, he rescued the Ontario Bank by establishing firm banking practices, strict but fair. In 1841, he was elected president of the Rochester and Auburn Railroad and later became Director of the New York Central. He was one

Nevertheless, these Irish men and women persevered. “They worked in factories [and] building roads,” wrote Glasner. “There are numerous accounts of their labor on the Canal as well as the railroads. By the turn of the century, Irish Americans held positions in local government, police departments and fire companies.” A local newspaper, the Ontario County Times, demonstrates their influence, as well, featuring “The Galway Fair” and “History of the Celts” as two articles in one of its February 1852 editions. “Although there is evidence of Irish settlement in many towns, such as Canandaigua, Victor, Honeoye and Geneva... little of their culture or tradition was nurtured or cultivated,” stated Glasner, explaining that it wasn’t until the establishment of the Republic of Ireland in 1937 that a reawakening began of Irish traditions. “Music, art and industry [again flourished] within the country [Ireland] and across the United States,” observed Glasner. “Today there is a greater awareness among the descendants of the Irish immigrants. Irish societies are being formed... for the purpose of teaching and sharing Irish culture.” On this Saint Patrick’s Day, we wish you well with a traditional Irish blessing: “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; The rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ll want to discourage well-meaning but potentially ill-advised interference in what you intend to accomplish. Your work has a better chance to succeed if it reflects you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s well-deserved reputation for loyalty could be tested if you learn that it might be misplaced. But don’t rely on rumors. Check the stories out before you decided to act. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’ve been going on adrenaline for a long time, and this unexpected lull in a recent spate of excitement could be just what you need to restore your energy levels. Enjoy it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Friends can be counted on to help you deal with a perplexing personal situation. But remember to keep your circle of advisers limited only to those you’re sure you can trust. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Securityloving Lions do not appreciate uncertainty in any form. But sometimes changing situations can reveal hidden stresses in time to repair a relationship before it’s too late. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time for single Virgos to make a love connection. Be careful not to be too judgmental about your new “prospect” -- at least until you know more about her or him. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice helps you resolve a problem that might have been unfairly attributed to the wrong person. Spend the weekend doing some longneglected chores. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Ignore distractions if you hope to accomplish your goal by the deadline you agreed to. Keep the finish line in sight, and you should be able to cross it with time to spare. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your creative self continues to dominate through much of the week. Also, despite a few problems that have cropped up, that recent romantic connection seems to be thriving. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) As curious as you might be, it’s best to avoid trying to learn a colleague’s secret. That sort of knowledge could drag you into a difficult workplace situation at some point down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Instead of spending too much time floundering around wondering if you can meet your deadline, you need to spend more time actually working toward reaching it. A very special thank you to Erin Greene from Banfield Animal Hospital in the Webster PetSmart. I have known Erin for many years. She goes above and beyond in the We wish to thank all of care of my animals. She those who quickly came to the aid of my husband at loves them like they’re the Canandaigua Walmart her own. I hope Banfield knows how lucky they are recently. He suffered a to have her. reaction to an injection I drove into a lane with 3 vehicles ahead of me, 2 in the process of fueling & 1 waiting to be fueled. When the lead vehicle drove away, someone drove in from the opposite direction and immediately started fueling. As this driver was fueling, another vehicle lined up behind that driver’s vehicle. As a Want to avoid result, when their fueling aggravation, chaos and was complete, no one mayhem? This system works well provided every vehicle I hate to start the new enters and exits in the year with a complaint same direction. Recently, but...I have brought my To the person complaining about local bottle redemption center. Just keep in mind that that’s what the place is for and that’s what the job consists of, whether it’s 10 bottles or cans or 1000! You were there for the same reason.

All blessings to the person who found my father’s wrist watch outside Canandaigua Wegmans and brought it into the store. It has been professionally cleaned and I am now wearing it with great joy! It is a wonder it was not run over and smashed beyond repair. Thank you, good person! It is simply a good day love and peace to all at the beginning of Lent. It will soon be spring!!!!! On Monday, March 11th, my husband, adult son, and I went to the labs in Brockport to get blood drawn. I don’t know many people who enjoy having blood drawn. I for one, am dog to the same groomer for the last twelve years, and year after year, I have given this groomer gifts for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the groomer’s birthday. I handed this groomer a large tip on Christmas week, and I have never even gotten a thank you or well wishes for the holidays, nothing. This groomer is fantastic, but the lack of manners shocks me. Saying thank you is not a hard thing to do! Doggie Bags - You walk your dog at our beautiful county park and even bring a plastic poop bag, like a responsible pet owner, but you leave the purple poop filled bag in the parking area inconsiderately. Next time let the dog poop in

especially a chicken little when someone is going to prick and poke me. I go every six months for a blood work up, and I must say, that STEPHANIE was so sweet to me. She always does a good job at making me feel as comfortable as one can be, under the circumstances. Since going to Brockport labs for my blood work up, I have slowly but surely started to gain confidence that I will not have a problem when doing so (I have bad veins). I owe that to the WONDERFUL people who work at Brockport Labs. THANKS again to STEPHANIE M, TINA D., and last but not least, KIRK W. Job well done! See you ou in six months!!! mont nths nt hs!!! hs

the woods where it will decompose and be less unsightly. This is directed toward members of a local Town Board who choose to act in their Town’s worst interests. They have disrespected the town’s election results with lock-step politics. Town offices are occupied by people without appropriate credentials or work ethic because the Town Board will not consider more qualified applicants. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY Arguably the most famous St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world, the New York City parade is more than 250 years old. The Big Apple’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the British military marched through the city.

ENJOY IRISH COFFEE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day is synonymous with many things, most notably the jovial atmosphere of the various events celebrating both the life of St. Patrick and Irish culture. New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are known for the Big Apple’s impressive parade up Fifth Avenue, while few who have partaken of Patty’s Day festivities in Chicago can forget the green Chicago River. Celebrations may vary from city to city, but it’s a good bet that celebrants will hear some traditional Irish music, enjoy a pint of Guinness and/or join the masses wearing green wherever they end up this St. Patrick’s Day. Drinking Irish coffee is another St. Patrick’s Day tradition many revelers enjoy. Few may indulge in Irish coffee throughout the year, but this special concoction can be a great way to warm up after attending a St. Patrick’s Day parade in the often chilly March temperatures. Cocktails made with coffee date back quite far, but Irish coffee does not have to go back too far to trace its history. In the mid-20th century, chef Joe Sheridan was working in Foynes, County Limerick when a group of United States-bound travelers found themselves stranded due to inclement weather that grounded their plane. Whether he was trying to warm them up or wake them up after their ordeal, Sheridan served the passengers coffee with a little bit of Irish whiskey mixed in. When the group inquired as to what they were drinking, Sheridan reportedly told them, “that’s Irish coffee.”

Medicare Advantage Plans Offer A Broader Mix Of Benefits (NAPS)—Whether you’re new to Medicare or an established beneficiary, take a close look at Medicare Advantage plans during this year’s open enrollment period. Those policies may offer the best mix of benefits to meet your health needs. Medicare Advantage plans provide Medicare benefits through private health insurance companies. These plans, which currently cover approximately 21 million people, typically include extra benefits and services not available on original Medicare. Medicare.com, a popular non-government health insurance resource, looked at benefits offered by more than 2,500 Medicare Advantage plans available through Medicare.com for 2019. Here are some key benefits available and the percentage of Medicare Advantage plans offering them: • $0 monthly premiums: 45 percent of all plans; • Dental: 88 percent of plans; • Vision exam: 98 percent of plans; • Vision glasses: 84 percent of plans; • Hearing: 90 percent of plans; • Fitness: 99 percent of plans; • Routine transportation: 37 percent of plans; and • Meals: 50 percent of plans. Early in 2018, the government paved the way for Medicare Advantage plans to offer even more benefits, including adult day care services, respite care for caregivers, and in-home assistance with activities such as dressing, bathing and managing medications. Health insurers will also be able to provide safety devices to help prevent injuries in the home, including stair rails, grab bars and temporary mobility ramps. Although most insurers won’t offer the next wave of benefits until 2020, some of the services may be available during this year’s open enrollment period, which runs through December 7, 2018. It’s important to look at costs when shopping for Medicare Advantage plans too. That’s true even if you already have Medicare Advantage, since premiums, deductibles and co-pays change from year to year. Insurance companies often tweak their list of covered drug and prices, too, for Medicare Advantage plans that cover prescription drugs, and that can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses for you. Learn More For further insights, go to www.medicare.com. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer a surprising array of new benefits.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

OVERCOME YOUR PADDY’S DAY HANGOVER Stay hydrated throughout St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re going to be hoisting pints on St. Patrick’s Day, hoist glasses of water throughout the day as well. The International Alliance for Responsible Drinking recommends drinking water while consuming alcohol. The IARD notes that alcohol acts as a diuretic. That means that when the body breaks down alcohol, it removes water from the blood through your urine. That can contribute to dehydration, creating some of the more unpleasant effects associated with being hungover. Drink some water with each alcoholic beverage you consume.
