Bertalan J. Vegh February 21, 2019 Bertalan J. Vegh, 81, was born to Katalin and Bertalan Vegh on the island of Czepel on the Danube River in Hungary. His younger sister, Kati, is still living on the island. When Bert was about 5 years old, his father was taken captive while serving in WWII. He was sent to Siberia, and young Bert was left to be the man of the house. His family never knew what happened to their father until 10 years later when he was released and found his way back home. Bert was always fond of gymnastics and competed in a club in Budapest. He attended dental school until the 1956 Hungarian Revolution broke out. He became a Freedom Fighter and snuck out of Hungary several times with the Red Cross to Vienna in order to bring food back for his family. One time when he returned to Hungary, his mother informed him that the AVO (Russian Police) came to their house looking for him. Exhausted, he and a friend grabbed a bottle of wine and headed by foot for Austria. They were captured at gunpoint by a guard hiding behind a haystack. After sharing the bottle of wine, the guard (who was a Hungarian sympathizer) released them and showed them the way to Vienna. Bert stayed at a refugee camp until he was offered a home in Rochester, N.Y by a woman who sponsored 4 or 5 other young Hungarian boys. Bert left Rochester to study English at the University of Miami and then moved back to New York. He continued his education at Brockport while coaching gymnastics at Rochester Turners. In 1966, he married June Paliani and became an American citizen. Hungary was just beginning to give amnesty to the Freedom Fighters, and Bert and June cautiously returned there for their honeymoon. During this time, Bert began working at Kodak in the Research Development Department. His inventions there received many patents. Bert went on to open two gymnastics clubs, one in Pittsford and the other in Greece. He named them “Bright Raven School of Gymnastics” in honor of his son Bertalan, who died at the age of 2. The name Bertalan means bright raven. The clubs competed all over New York State and were very successful. Bert ran the clubs until he retired from Kodak then eventually sold the clubs. One is still in operation today with about 900 students. Bert was an avid soccer player and traveled with a group of 35+ members to Italy several times to compete. He also played sub-goalie for the Rochester Lancers ar.id coached soccer at the University of Rochester. He was an active member of the Italian-American Sports Club for years and helped erect the building. He loved cooking in their kitchen for lunches and parties. He was also a member of the Hungarian Club and cooked there too. In the winter, Bert spent his free time skiing around the mountains of New York. He passed away on 2/21/2019. Bert is survived by his sister, Katalin of Czepel, Hungary; his wife June; son Sandor of N.Y; son Alex of CA and four grandchildren; Konstantin, Evo, Oktavian, and Persephone and several nieces and cousins in Hungary.
DID YOU KNOW? People with red hair are often assumed to be of Irish descent. Although not everyone with copper tresses can trace their lineage to the Emerald Isle, a deeper look at genealogy may, in fact, point out Irish origins somewhere along the way. According to Eupedia, a website that investigates European ancestry and genetics, Ireland has the highest per capita percentage of redheads in the world. The rates hover anywhere from 10 to 30 percent. In order to have red hair, a person must possess the MC1R gene, which is recessive and only occurs in about 2 percent of the world’s population, says the National Institutes of Health. Both parents must pass on a copy of the gene in order for their offspring to be born with red hair. Red hair also tends to skip generations, so if you are a redhead, your children may not be born with red hair, but your grandchildren may. The rarest combination is a person with red hair and blue eyes, which also are a recessive trait. Other cultures that historically have red hair are Scandinavian nations, like Norway. It is believed that since ancient Vikings took Irish slaves to Norway centuries ago, their genetics intermingled. Keep in mind that redheads should stay out of the sun. Research says the pigment that gives hair the red color can make redheads more susceptible to melanoma than even fair-skinned blonds.

“The Broad Majestic Shannon,” The Pogues: This song, from the legendary Celtic punk band’s 1988 album, was inspired by the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, and is sure to invite people to the dance floor with its opening notes. Lead singer Shane MacGowan, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished lyricists of his time, said the song is about an Irishman returning to his home along the Shannon after many years spent in London. That gives the song a somewhat autobiographical tilt, as MacGowan himself spent time living in London and Ireland.

per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? -- M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine -- though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. -- J.O. ANSWER: While everyone is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation -- your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Age Healthier With These Five Tips HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Promotes healing: There is evidence that clinical use of honey on burns and wounds can be beneficial. Data published in the Scientific World Journal said that honey can be used to dress wounds and that it produces similar results to other topical treatments in promoting healing.
Magic Maze WORDS WITH STRAIGHT LINES ONLY
(NAPS)—As your wisdom grows with age, so can the number of pill bottles in your medicine cabinet. For those “young-at-heart” seniors, sticking to healthy habits is the key to aging well. With some simple steps, you can keep a healthy routine that also gives you more time to do the things you love. Joe Koren, pharmacy manager at Walgreens, shares his top five tips for managing your health with a busy schedule: 1. Consult the experts You know to go for regular checkups with your general practitioner, but don’t forget that pharmacists can also be accessible experts to answer questions about your health. In fact, your pharmacist is a licensed professional who provides different health care services including immunizations and can help you understand why and how to take your medications to support effective treatment. Some pharmacies offer extended hours, and 24-hour chat with pharmacy staff is available whenever you need it. Many locations also have health care clinics to treat minor injuries and illness, which can be a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to a doctor’s visit. 2. Let your smartphone help you With a packed list of to-dos, friends to meet and grandchildren to watch, medication routines can easily slip the mind. Luckily, your mobile phone is a helpful tool to keep track of your medications, right in the palm of your hand. For example, the Walgreens app can help you set daily pill reminder notifications, so you never miss a dose. You can also find closeby health care providers and arrange a video call for a face-to-face consultation with a physician or specialist through the app. If using your smartphone comes with its challenges, ask one of the pharmacy staff or a family member to help set it up for you. 3. Simplify your prescription refills Multiple prescriptions can mean multiple trips to the pharmacy each month. A trained pharmacist can recommend convenient refill options such as aligning multiple refill trips to one single date, switching to 90day refills or having eligible prescriptions sent directly to your home. All these services can make it easier to stay on your medication schedule and help save time. 4. Find perks in your Medicare D plan So you’ve signed up for your Medicare Part D plan, but are you using it to save money? Fortunately, many prescription drug plans include Walgreens in their preferred pharmacy network, which could mean a convenient way to lower your co-pays. A little bit of research into the right combination of plan, provider and pharmacy can go a long way to help you save money. Walgreens pharmacies even conduct senior days, giving you extra advice on health care topics and special offers. 5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle They say age is only a number, and when you’re in control of your health, that’s very true! With the time and money you’ll save from these tips, think about how you can embark on and maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Why not challenge yourself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, connect with friends and family, or take the time to prepare nutritious meals? These five small steps can all contribute to a healthier life, and free up time and head space for the things you really love. For additional information on tools to make medication management more convenient, visit www.walgreens.com/pharmacy. Your pharmacist may have more ways to save you time and money than you realize.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you tend to bore easily and leave others to finish what you start, this is one time when you’d be wise to complete things on your own. Then you can move on to something new. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your indecision about a personal situation might come out of those mixed signals you’re getting. Best not to make any commitments until you have a better sense of how things are going. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A dispute appears to be getting out of hand. But you should be able to step in and bring it all under control soon. Be patient. News about a potential career move might be delayed. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career obligations could interfere with important personal plans. But using a combination of common sense and compromise helps resolve the dilemma to everyone’s satisfaction. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A stressful situation drains some of your energy reserves. But you soon bounce back in time to finish your tasks and enjoy a well-deserved weekend getaway. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to throw a party for friends and colleagues, and surprise them with your dazzling domestic skills. You also might want to reconsider that career move you put on hold. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sudden change of mind by someone you relied on could cause a delay in moving ahead with your plans. But those whom you’ve helped out before are prepared to return the favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You start the week feeling too shy to speak up in front of others. However, your self-assurance soon takes over, giving you the confidence you need to make yourself heard. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) One way to deal with a pesky personal dilemma this week is to meet it head-on. Insist on an explanation of why the situation reached this point and what can be done to change it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The creative Capricorn finds several outlets for her or his talents this week. Also note that while a romantic connection looks promising, remember to allow it to develop on its own. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You stand out this week as the best friend a friend can have. But be careful that you don’t take too many bows, or you might see gratitude replaced with resentment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What seems to be an ideal investment should be checked out thoroughly before you snap at the offer and find yourself hooked by an expensive scam. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is matched by your generosity. You are a person who people know they can rely on. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who are not of Irish descent and/or those who have never visited Ireland may not know it, but the live music they may hear when entering a pub on St. Patrick’s Day is an integral part of the fabric of Irish culture. An Irish Seisiún typically finds a group of musicians gathered in a pub to play traditional Irish music, oftentimes while seated at a table among their audience. While many pubs reserve stage areas for their musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, the spirit of seisiún is still present, as musicians often interact with the audience.

It had fallen out of my bag. I was so VERY GRATEFUL!! It was so encouraging to see the help that she gave, along with the help that Hegedorn’s had given by calling my phone also. I will be sure to respond, in the future, when I see a need.
Last Saturday when I was at Hegedorn’s in Webster, I realized that I had lost my phone. I went to the service desk to see if someone had turned it in. No one had turned it in. I started to retrace my steps in the store, when a very nice lady who overheard the conversation, said that she would call my phone and we could listen for the ring. When we didn’t hear it in the store, she suggested we go check my car. It was there!
It’s refreshing to see and read, and then realize that there’s someone at the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” who respects and cares about the English language. Whether you call it “copy editing” or “proofreading,” the publication has an expert professional who knows a lot about correct spelling, syntax, and grammar. Easy on the eyes and brain, even though we’re talking about advertising here, your publication presents an errorfree reading experience!
To the Venters sick of line budgers - Those are our “privileged” shoppers, and we deal with their “I’m in a hurry” daily. Some customers are extremely impatient, and when the lines are long, the quiet remarks and huffing and puffing aren’t going to change a thing. They realize that but continue to complain anyway. Also, why customers feel that it’s no big deal to rip open packaging and leave merchandise everywhere is mind boggling. We’re talking adults here. Working retail was difficult this holiday season. Some customers are so miserable that I feel sorry for them. They are wasting a beautiful life being that way, but they shouldn’t take it out on the cashiers.
Many years ago, I bought 2 acres from a farmer who raised cows. We had a very enjoyable 12 years there. We had great neighbors. Yes, we had 2 to 4 days each year that we could smell the natural fertilizer being spread, when the wind was blowing in the right direction. No big deal. 363 days had air quality so pure you can’t find it anywhere in the city. We also had unchlorinated water that contained natural calcium. The worst noise pollution was on the very hot nights when we were trying to sleep. Boy, the crickets can be loud! My advice to anyone buying a house near a farm is to perform due diligence. Think about it. If a couple of days of odor will ruin your life, don’t buy near a farm. For all others, I
Neighbors happen out of our choices! I am grateful to have nice neighbors, but on top, our next-door neighbor is really like our lucky charm. Moving from TX, I bought my very first home, with a 200+yard driveway in beautiful SUMMER, forgetting about WINTER. I was confident I could learn it all despite being female and foreigner and being housetrapped with 2 kids was not in my imagination. Well, either this is the worst winter in a while, or it’s me experiencing the homeowner reality... The 1st snow storm, my John Deere was still in summer mode. The 2nd storm, without chains it could barely move. The 3rd storm, I got snow tires instead. The 4th storm, it finally works! Every time, our driveway is magically cleared because a
lovely neighbor “quietly” sent the elves over!!!
My husband and I go to a local restaurant for a fish fry. Last Friday, February 23rd, we went and the hostess came and asked us for our drink order, but most important is, she took extra time getting ready for work that day. She was dressed in long black pants and a real nice black top, very professional. Kudos, young lady. Stop by and see for yourself at Gunsmoke Restaurant. Diane & Norm Thank you to my wonderful neighbor Bob for keeping my driveway cleared out. It is appreciated.
say, enjoy! If life hadn’t interfered, we would still be in that house and on that land. This is to the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. You need to think before making such a comment. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah; others may celebrate other religious holidays. Bottom line, not everyone celebrates Christmas. So as not to offend those whodon’t and because you may not know what they celebrate, wishing them “Happy Holidays” is very appropriate and considerate. To the person who wrote that wishing others a “Happy
Holiday” is insincere: There are a handful of holidays in December, some that are far older than Christmas. To insist on wishing one and all a “Merry Christmas” is insensitive and disrespectful. It becomes all about you. Wishing others a “Happy Holiday” indicates a generosity of spirit and an enlightened mind. It is an acknowledgment that other’s holidays are just as important to them as Christmas is to you. It is no more and no less valid than any other. Further, treating everyone equally does not indicate an attack on Christmas. Whatever holiday you are celebrating, I wish you a happy and safe one.

“Bag Lady” of Brighton Helps Those Struggling in Rochester
“B
ag Lady” Marti Klaver is making a difference in Rochester’s communities one bag at a time. Klaver has always worked, both personally and professionally, with underserved populations. “I am in graduate school for my Psychiatric Nurse Practioners degree,” said Klaver. “I also was a part of Flower City Pickers, a group of volunteers that redistributes leftover Marti Klaver, Klaver aka “The Bag Lady,” and discarded produce.” and her daughter, Freyja. Klaver feels compassion for populations who are too often pushed aside. “There are populations that do not receive enough support,” explains Klaver. “So, I decided to do something about it.” Klaver originally started distributing bags for the homeless out of her home as a side project nearly three years ago. Her gathering of fabric bags such as backpacks, duffle bags and tote bags, has earned her the affectionate title of “The Bag Lady.” “I did a huge summer drive of bags which is how the name came to be,” she explained. Klaver collects these bags and fills them with necessities such as snacks, feminine hygiene products and sanitizer. Then, she and her two children, Freyja, age 9, and Odinn, age 7, deliver them to homeless shelters such as the Open Door Mission and House of Mercy in Rochester. “I usually bring my kids,” said Klaver. “I think that is so important. I have been doing this stuff my whole life, and it’s important that my children realize this is what you should do: help other people.” Freyja and Odinn help their mother carry the donations wherever they are needed. “I don’t want my children to be afraid,” explained Klaver. “I want them to see that not everyone has things.” Helping others was a lesson Klaver learned as a child. “My parents took in a lot of foster kids,” she said. “Helping those in need was just how I was raised. Hopefully, I can instill some of that into my kids.” Klaver recounted the story of a time she took her daughter to the Open Door Mission. On their way there, they saw a bridge where homeless people sometimes gather. Her daughter was so affected that she went up to the Mission counter and poured out the contents of her small purse for those in need there. “It is this firsthand experience, not just knowing about it, that is a huge wake up call to us,” explained Klaver.
By Amanda Dudek Klaver, who currently resides in Brighton, shared that many individuals, including friends, nurses and people from her former neighborhood of Penfield, have been supportive of her efforts. “This year, we will still do the bags, and I think we will take some of them right to the street to hand them out,” Klaver said. It is this personal interaction that Klaver feels is so important, describing times she has given money to the homeless on the street. “Sometimes, I have my children hand them the money,” she adds. “I want them to learn fundamentally to help someone else.” It seems to be working. “They really enjoy it,” said Klaver, speaking of the bag project. “They have better things to do at 9 and 7 years of age, but they choose to be involved in this project.” Klaver has more planned for the future, both for her “Bag Lady” project and beyond. “We are going to potentially partner with a local company for the summer drive,” said Klaver. “Encouraging people to bring in decent, used, fabric bags.” Klaver describes two additional possibilities: Miracle Messages and Free Talks. Miracle Messages of San Francisco tapes messages from relatives for people who have been out of contact and living on the streets. They then try to find those people and play the messages for them. Another project, also out of San Francisco, is Sidewalk Talks. Volunteers sit on the street and offer a listening ear and even advice, if desired. “I hope to start one of these two programs in Rochester,” said Klaver. “All of these people who are so often pushed aside and made to feel like a burden or invisible, are humans like us, and they deserve respect.” Marti Klaver is one of the inspiring women we have chosen to highlight on International Women’s Day, (March 8th). To read more about the incredible things women are doing in our area, visit our website at www.gvpennysaver.com/my_hometown/hometown_stories. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? When asked why Rochester, Klaver stated, “I love being in the inner city because those people need our help the most. Immigrants and refugees from Syria need support as do those struggling with substance abuse and homelessness.” Klaver, a psychiatric nurse with Monroe County Jail, knows whereof she speaks. “I see the need firsthand,” said Klaver. “I just took a contract at Helio on University Ave., as well, and I work at the Catholic Family Center Downtown.” Klaver explained that she just finished a weekend contract at a hospital that closed its Inpatient Psych Unit, leaving those in need of such care to seek it elsewhere. “It is unfortunate,” said Klaver. Klaver continues to do what she can. “I just did a winter drive for what anyone would need being out in the elements,” said Klaver. “Pet Spa Paws and Play in Gates has been a tremendous help. Owner Terri has been collecting bags for me at her shop, which I pick up and fill. I also post updates on various Facebook pages, including my Bag Lady page.”
Marti and her two children, Freyja and Odinn, bring goods to those in need.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers.

Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY
Golf Course Maintenance
Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40.
Oak Hill Country Club
People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.

924-1934 VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
