PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies. Here are some important questions you should ask:
Put a Pet-Friendly Spotlight on your Business! SPONSOR OUR PENNY SAVER PET PAL
• Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)?
Reserveyourspottoday!
Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines.

doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence. Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Fill in the Missing
Once upon a time, there was an airline named Pan Am. Pan Am bought a very special plane from Boeing called the 747SP - the “SP” stood for “special performance.” Indeed, when it first took flight in 1975, this plane - though not as big as other planes - could go faster and farther than all other commercial airliners. Only forty-five of these special planes were ever produced. One of them was named “Charles Lindbergh” after the ultra-famous aviator, and flew its passengers between New York, London and Hong Kong. But fate had in store something even more special for this quick little plane...

To Infitinty and Beyond! On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn? When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!
SOFIA Word
Search Sofia Observatory Plane Stars Stellar Supernovae Telescope Stratosphere Nebula
How was this discovered? Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light. This is how the SOFIA was able to investigate the birth of stars in - By Nicole Karam our closest stellar nursery, the Orion Nebula. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.

Composite decking fits in with eco-friendly lifestyles. The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit. When comparing composite decking brands, look mainly at the colors, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems. Many are fastened with regular deck screws, offers This Old House. The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4. • On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens.
What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it. To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions. 1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood. 2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives. 4. What are the signs and symptoms? • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor. 5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. 6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org. 7. Where can one learn more? You can get further information from the American Heart Association at sharefromheart.heart.org. When caught early, heart valve disease can be treated to help you have a longer, healthier life.

Before booking any such trips, speak to your Mom and ask if there’s anywhere in particular she’d like to go. Such trips can be expensive, so adults might want to speak to their siblings and finance such an excursion together.

Over 50 Years Experience
HOROSCOPE
REAL ESTATE SECTION
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing selfconfidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

What does it take to get the movie “Unplanned” screened in your theater? I understand you hedged your bets that it would underperform on opening weekend. However, after Unplanned exceeded expectations with an opening weekend of $6.3 million, landing it in 4th place for weekend box office sales, it is still not on your screens for the first week of April. Instead you have continued to carry the 5th and 6th best-selling movies from the weekend. Is this deliberate censorship GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Tinseltown Wednesday Matinee - Thank you, thank you, thank you for handing my misplaced set of keys in to Management on 4/17/19. I didn’t give them a thought until I went to leave the theater after the premiere showing of “Breakthrough.” I was frantic at the thought that my keys were not with me. Once I thought it through, I checked where I got popcorn and they had been turned in. I was in tears AND I will pay it forward! Thank you again! of a pro-life movie or simply bad business practices? If it is a result of bad planning, I hope that, in the future, you would know your audience better and show movies that support life, family, marriage, hope and God. It is certainly better than the average garbage put out by Hollywood on a monthto-month basis. I use the local library often. I grew up respecting that others are there reading and studying. However, I can’t seem to find a time of day to go where it is ever quiet. In the morning, mothers are there with their little ones who are understandably running and/or screaming. Thank you to the moms who do take their screaming little ones to the foyer. Still, I wish speaking quietly with one another

So many people also use their cell phones as if no one else is around! Please respect those who are at the library for the purpose of reading and studying! Would you carry on like this in a theatre? Could we all look both ways when entering an intersection and treat stop signs like stop signs? I’m tired of being the eyes for other drivers who disobey. For example, a nice adult woman didn’t stop and nearly hit me. I beeped my horn and put my hands up in air, thankful I didn’t get hit. She then flipped me off. I pulled up to her to explain

Caregivers Catch a Break Thanks to Healing Hands By Amanda Dudek
“
What can I do for these incredible caregivers?” This is the question Linda Demme asked herself nearly two years ago. Today, Demme offers caregivers the chance to relax and experience the many benefits of massage. Although she began this outreach only recently, Demme’s passion for wellness and her care for others have been a part of her life for much longer. “I have been a registered nurse for over 30 years,” said Linda. “A great deal of my experience was in long-term care. Many caregivers who brought their family members to us were exhausted.” Many of these hardworking caregivers would care for family members until they could no longer provide the level of care their loved ones needed. “Oftentimes, they can no longer do the physical lifting,” observed Laura. “I went back to school to be a massage therapist and began building my own practice,” Laura shared. Her caregiver clients ultimately inspired Healing Hands. “One of my earliest members, a very elderly woman, came to me with hip pain. Her husband had dementia, and she wasn’t sleeping very well for fear her husband might wander during the night. She was under extraordinary stress.” This touched Demme’s heart. “In situations like these, caregivers experience so much pressure on top of the stress of losing their loved one,” she explained. “They lose their spouse, parent or other loved one bit by bit, grieving the whole time. Then, when their loved one passes away, they grieve that loss all over again.” Demme realized there must be many people in similar situations, including people who are not only caregivers to a loved one but to other family members, also. “I wanted to be there for these people,” explained Linda. “I saw many programs and services for those who are ill but not many for these caregivers.” So, Demme bought an office building in Fairport and started her massage therapy not-for-profit: Healing Hands for Helping Hearts. “People have been surprised and grateful that there is a program out there for them,” said Linda. “Initially, I focused on dementia caregivers. However, the need is deeper than I ever imagined.” Since starting Healing Hands, Demme’s definition of eligible caregivers has expanded. “I have been working with Autism Up,” Linda said. “We are helping several 30-40-year-old women who are caregivers for their children with Autism, Down Syndrome and more. I also work with a non-profit called David’s Refuge, a program gives the parents of sick children the chance, once a year, to go out, take a break and focus on their own relationship.” “With Healing Hands, I give these caregivers the opportunity to focus on their own wellness,” said Linda. “Massage can be good for so many things: release of physical tension, reducing stress, anxiety, fatigue, pain, even insomnia.” Demme clarified that each person’s needs are different. “It is important to have conversation about a client’s needs each time they visit,” she said.

“Sometimes, clients need someone to talk to, as well,” said Linda, describing a client who benefited from conversation during her massage. “When you are a caregiver, there is often not much opportunity to be heard,” Linda explained. “It is emotionally exhausting.” Gradually, conversation helped Demme’s client to work through difficult feelings, and she began to feel the benefits of massage. Another client, Mary, started visiting Demme while caring for her mother. “Linda said I was her first customer for Healing Hands,” Mary recalled, “Not only did I receive a fabulous massage, but I also discovered that Linda is a wonderful listener.” Mary has now been going to Demme for over two years and has been so impressed by the level of care she has received as well as Demme’s helpfulness. “It helps you do the best job you can as a caretaker,” explained Mary. “Linda understands what caretakers are going through.” Demme’s empathy, exceptional massage therapy skills and listening ear help her offer caregivers both support and wellness. “Linda is so kind, caring, knowledgeable and compassionate,” enthused Mary. “Healing Hands is relaxing and very helpful.” Demme hopes word of her not-for-profit will now spread so that everyone who would benefit will take advantage of it. “I hope services like this spread to other offices, as well,” said Linda. “There are currently two other therapists who also provide this service at greatly reduced costs. I hope others will also agree to take less money to help clients like these.” Demme also hopes that doctors would consider prescribing massage to their patients. “Thankfully, the conversation in the community is becoming less ‘let’s treat illness,’ and more ‘how can we support wellness so that we do not become ill in the first place?’”
