Happy Valentine’s Day

This holiday can be shared with friends and family relations too. It is an all-inclusive culture when celebrating Valentine’s Day. Why not send out multiple cards and messages to spread the love to all you know. The possibilities are endless.

Creating your own personalized card, it is not only a thoughtful sentiment, but also the way it was done in days of old. You can also add a heartfelt poem, whether you write this yourself, or borrow one from any of the iconic love writers such as Yeats, Browning or Shakespeare.

Pets are loved on too

Western countries are increasingly including their pets in the holiday, gifting dog friendly chocolate treats and other themed gifts.

DID YOU KNOW?

Reading is a beloved pastime that can positively affect cognitive health and even help to reduce stress. Though those benefits are largely associated with adults, reading can be equally beneficial to children, even those who have yet to learn how to read. According to the Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, infants pick up on language earlier than researchers oncerealized, andhearinglanguage is important as their brains prepare them to speak. Reading also supports word learning and preliteracy skills in older children. The ECLKC notes that when adults read to children, they typically speak words they would not otherwise use in typical discourse. That helps children expand their vocabularies, even before they learn to read on their own.

TIPS TO GET A MORE RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Skip late afternoon naps. Short naps can help people reenergize, but the timing of naps could adversely affect how well people sleep at night. The Mayo Clinic notes that napping after 3 p.m. can make it harder to sleep soundly at night. And while short naps can provide a necessary jolt, it’s important that naps be no longer than 30 minutes. Naps that exceed a half hour can contribute to feelings of grogginess and even compromise your ability to get restful sleep overnight.

AVOID EXERCISE INJURIES AFTER AGE 50

Exercise is a necessary component of good health.Physical activity improves overall well-being and can help a person maintain a healthy weight and bone density while improving flexibility and muscle strength. It is essential that people continue to exercise into their golden years for all of the reasons mentioned above. But adults age 50 and older should find an exercise program that won’t make them vulnerable to injury.

AARP and the Consumer Product Safety Commission says exercise-related visits to the emergency room surpassed 107,000 for those aged 50 and older in 2020.That figure was even smaller than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic being in effect. Poor form when exercising can be worse for an older adult than doing no exercise at all, particularly for people with arthritis or preexisting conditions. Older adults need to take extra precautions to avoid injuries while staying fit.

Elderly Man Weighs 84 Pounds Decades After His Stomach Removal

Q.DEAR DR. ROACH: Is 18 years a record for living without a stomach?

A family member had stomach cancer when he was 70 and had his stomach removed. He consulted with a dietician and has been able to eat small but frequent meals. He can also take enzymes, vitamins and other things, but slowly he has lost weight.

Now at 88, he is down to 84 pounds, and his muscles are also affected. He used to play racquetball regularly, but this came to an end during COVID and wasn’t picked back up after the pandemic. He can no longer walk without assistance. They are putting a feeding tube into his small intestine to supplement what he usually eats.

Are you familiar with this type of thing? What else can be done, or is this the end? Will he starve to death? -- Y.F.

A.ANSWER: I have seen many patients with stomach cancer and have never seen this degree of weight loss, but weight loss is very common after removing the stomach. This degree of weight loss is very disturbing and usually results in a worse outcome, so effective treatment is overdue. A feeding tube, which isn’t often the appropriate treatment for weight loss, seems to be an important short-term treatment. I assume that he has had extensive evaluations for the recurrence of diseases, including CT scans.

You mention that he has been getting vitamins; B12 and vitamin D levels are often profoundly low after gastrectomy(removalofthestomach),sotheseshould be checked, even if he has been on replacements. If no other cause is found, it might be worth a try to use an appetite stimulant.

In addition, I would formally measure his total calorie input in a day to see whether the problem really is that he isn’t getting enough calories. I would be worried that he isn’t absorbing all of them.

There is no reason for him to starve to death. In the very worst case, nutrition can be given intravenously while they figure out why he is losing so much weight.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

Local libraries are invaluable resources for residents, including students and their families. The value of libraries has been recognized for far longer than many may realize. The Franklin Public Library, opened in 1778 in Franklin, Massachusetts, is considered the first lending library in the United States. Since then, libraries have become integral components of communities across the nation and even the globe. It’s easy to overlook a local library, but they are more than just places to borrow a book. Residents can utilize an array of services to make the most of their local libraries.

E loyers, be be er

Why do employers care so much more about profitability than taking care of their employees? I may sound like a senior, but I am far from it, old enough to know a time when my boss/es valued me, my time, my work, and young enough to not understand why current employers don’t care that inflation raises costs of absolutely everything in our lives, and yet they do not give raises. Put your money where your mouth is and help us care about the company we work for. To be told outright that they value our work, to see consistently increased prices charged to customers/clients, to see the bosses take extravagant vacations and/or drive new vehicles, buy or build new homes, but to be told “We don’t give raises”?! No wonder employees are becoming more and more disenfranchised and apathetic toward their companies/ employers/jobs in general. What is this world coming to if half of a company’s small employee base is forced to take on second jobs to make ends meet?! Do better.

Thank you to the clerks at Five Below, Brockport, NY. I was shopping before Christmas 2024 in a couple of places and on the way home discovered I had lost one of my rings. Not just any ring, one that my parents gave to my Aunt many years ago and I received after my Mother passed. Black Onyx with a small diamond in center. One of the clerks found it and kept it up front. On a whim a couple days later I asked the cashier if they had found a ring. YES! she pulled it out. I was so thankful. I wanted to reward them but they said they couldn’t accept anything. You really deserve to be held in high esteem. Thank you so much for being so good.

Arlene F. Boice Sanger February 10, 2025

Arlene F. Boice Sanger’s long and full life came to a peaceful end on February 10, 2025. Arlene packed a lot of living into her 99 years. She was a dedicated instructor of Home Economics, teaching for 32 years in western NY. She was an enthusiastic traveler, studying in Switzerland and teaching in England as a Fulbright Scholar, as well as traveling the globe. She loved having new experiences and meeting new people.

She was, perhaps most of all, a devoted daughter and mother. She cared for her parents as they aged and made sure her two daughters grew up strong and independent, as she was. She passed her indomitable spirit along to them.

Arlene was born November 26, 1925, in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of George and Suessa Boice. She married Roswell J. Sanger in 1956 and, with him, raised their daughters. She split her time, when not traveling, between her home in Albion, NY, the Sanger farm on Rand Hill, and her parents’ home on the St. Lawrence River. Arlene was predeceased by her husband, Roswell Sanger, and her brother and sister-in-law, Wendall and Mildred Boice. Arlene is survived by her daughters, Paula Violo and Jillian Kallish, as well as Paula’s husband, Maurice Violo, and their son, Alex Violo. She is also survived by Frank Kallish and by nieces, a nephew, greatnieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. When they were small, Arlene took her daughters and their cousins on a daily walk to a special “resting spot.” After her full life, we know she has earned her resting spot.

e family wishes to acknowledge the care Arlene received at Pine Harbour, as well as the support from her many kind neighbors and friends.

Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the R.W. Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court Street, Plattsburgh, NY.

TIPS TO MANAGE TIME MORE EFFICIENTLY

Identify tasks that can be tackled at night. A hectic start to a morning can set a bad precedent for the rest of the day. With that in mind, adults can identify tasks they can perform at night to ensure mornings are less hectic. Lay out clothes the night before to save the trouble of finding an outfit in the morning. Prepare the family’s lunches and even breakfasts the night before so mornings go more smoothly.

Each numbered row contains two clues and two answers. e two answers differ from each other by only one letter, which has already been inserted. For example, if you exchange the A from MASTER for an I, you get MISTER. Do not change the order of the letters.

Level: Challenging

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

DID YOU KNOW?

Peaches are tasty and good for the body as well. Peaches are related to apricots, cherries, almonds, and plums. They’re known as stone fruit because their flesh surrounds a shell with an edible seed. Peaches are packed with beneficial plant compounds, minerals and vitamins. Peaches contain about two grams of fiber in one medium-sized peach. Fiber helps to move food through the digestive system and reduce the likelihood of constipation, offers Healthline. Peaches also contain VitaminA,an antioxidant that helps the immune system fight infection. They also have vitamin C,which the body needs to fight off infection. Peaches are good sources of potassium, which the body needs to regulate heart rate and blood pressure. Foods high in potassium also can help lower blood pressure, says WebMD. Vitamin K, which helps heal wounds, also is found in peaches. Research says that peaches may help to prevent cancer as well. One study indicated that consuming peach peels offers the highest level of anticancer phytochemicals, which assist in protecting cells from free radical damage that can lead to cancer.
