We were blessed with such a sweet, loyal pup when we added

Harper Mae to our family almost four years ago. She adores our children and has proven to be quite the protector of our home. Walks and fetch are her main hobbies, but she does occasionally enjoy jumping in the swamp of the canal or chasing the family chickens against Mom’s wishes. Thanks for letting us love on you Harper! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS. S T N RA S E V RA Thank you, emergency responders! Hidden Meadows in Bergen, NY, is a quiet retirement community. Most of the residents are retired, so the pace of life is gentle, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. This peace was shattered on Thursday, 12/30/21 just before 8:00 p.m. when a house exploded into flames. Neighbors, with the help of firemen, forced the door open, pulled the owner of the home out, and put her on oxygen. Almost certainly, they saved her life. The residents of Hidden Meadows Senior Community want to say, “Thank you!” to the Firefighters, EMTs and other related Emergency Response personnel. We are proud of your work and grateful for your service. May God bless you and watch over you! Wonderful neighbors! I am very blessed to live next door to the Hensler family. Words cannot adequately express how much their acts of kindness mean to me. Thank you. - JMH Rescued I have to thank a special person who took the time to help my runaway pup. This was in the afternoon on 1/10/22. My pup had got out of her collar and ran to a busy complex road. By the time I got back to the road, this person had my pup in her vehicle and then handed her to me. My thanks also to those who took the time to stop their vehicles and were patient. My pup survived the ordeal without harm. She means the world to me. I can’t express my gratitude enough for the helpfulness. God Bless!

No Jingle Bells? It seems like every day an old tradition or piece of history gets trashed or destroyed in our country by some so-called, well-meaning group. [Local school] recently banned playing or singing Jingle Bells. What's next, telling the students there's no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny? I think they should have to specify their reasons to the taxpayers of their school district. Side street speeding I live on the east side of [local town], and I can't believe how many people fly down my street. A lot of the streets don't have sidewalks, so I keep my dog on the grass, but sometimes I'm scared for myself because when there's a car coming from each direction, neither one will slow down. These are residential areas, not the expressway. Reasonable tree prices To the person complaining about Christmas tree prices: it is the one time of year that those families make the bulk of their income (especially local). It costs money, time, and energy to grow those trees and keep them healthy for you and your families to enjoy. If your tree cost you $54, that means it cost $4.50 a month. Then you have to count all those years they kept that tree. It really isn’t that expensive. They are farmers! They have to raise prices just as everyone else in the economy has. They need to make a living, too. Honestly, if you’re not happy about it, be a Scrooge and don’t get a tree at all.

Animal cruelty I have been made aware of a very sad, and possibly cruel, situation. On a local country road, there are three horses standing in a small corral that is all mud. They are very close to the road, and although I saw some hay spread on top of the mud, the horses look scrawny and sick. They look like they huddle together for warmth. I saw no shelter they could go into in this bitter weather. My question is this: why do people keep pets if they don’t take care of them? I worry for them on these frigid days and nights, but apparently there are no laws preventing this type of abuse.

SMELLY FIREPLACE? After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Is Telehealth All It’s Cracked Up to Be

Medicare started paying for telehealth medical visits last year and will continue through the end of 2023. With telehealth, we sit in our homes and talk to our doctor on a screen, and Medicare pays for it. In the beginning, the number of telehealth visits skyrocketed -- and then fell dramatically. Is that because we learned the hard way just what the limitations of telehealth really are? There are people on both sides of the “should seniors use telehealth” debate. They both say they offer solid evidence for their opinion. Those who claim it’s a great thing for us to consult with our doctors via a little screen say it’s helpful because it keeps us out of the doctor’s office. We don’t have to go in among all the germs, and we don’t need to worry about transportation. On the other hand, those who are against telehealth appointments for seniors argue that many of us can’t even afford the very devices we would need for telehealth. Even if we have a cellphone, the screen is so small as to be worthless, especially if we have a vision or hearing problem. Then there are the plan fees needed for that device. And what of privacy when we need someone at hand to help navigate the software for us? Do we really want our grandchildren sitting there when we discuss a personal issue with our doctor? Even if we have a computer, one with a large monitor, how is that going to work when we need the doctor to look at a rash on our back? Or if we really ought to have a stethoscope pressed to our chest because of that ragged cough we’ve had for days? Note: If you have original Medicare, you’ll pay the same amount for the telehealth appointment as you would if you got the services in person. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Marilyn A. Smith (Geer) January 6, 2022 Livonia: At age 87, Marilyn passed peacefully at her home on January 6, 2022. She was born on April 22, 1934 in Rochester, NY to the late Elmer and Jessie Geer. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Fred W. Smith. Survived by daughters, Teresa (Peter) Kierulff of CA and Debra (David) Hunt of Livonia; grandchildren, Pierson (Stacia) Kierulff, Jensen Kierulff, Brian Hunt (Kara Yudikaitis), and Lisa Hunt (Tyler Ohle); great-granddaughter, Jaylin Kierulff of CA; sisters, Dorothy Guy and Linda Bettner; also survived by several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Avon / Geneseo: At age 83, Carol passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2022 with her family by her side at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was born in Canandaigua, NY to the late Walter and Anne Hoerger. Carol is predeceased by her beloved husband, James J. Corcoran and her brother, Chris Hoerger. Survived by her children, Cathy (Stephen) Raynor, and Jim (Rebecah) Corcoran; along with her grandchildren, Ryan Corcoran, Kendall Corcoran and Danielle Raynor. Carol was raised in Cortland, NY, attending St. Mary’s Catholic School until her family moved to Groton when she was in high school. It was at Groton High where she met her future husband, Jim. The smart cheerleader & athlete shared a love of lake life & spent summers on Owasco Lake at the Corcoran family cottage with friends & extended family. Carol was educated at Le Moyne College in Syracuse and went on to teach junior high English. Carol & Jim’s marriage in 1964 was followed by the birth of their daughter, Cathy, and eventually they settled in Avon and welcomed their son, Jim. Carol’s career transitioned to homemaker as her husband took over ownership and operation of Avon Farm Equipment. Carol excelled at motherhood and devoted her life to raising her children, especially encouraging the love of swimming and fishing on Conesus Lake. Her greatest joy, however, was being an involved & loving grandmother to Ryan, Kendall and Danielle, attending every event she could, even in virtually in later years. Carol made great friends at Morgan Estates in Geneseo the last 6 years of her life. She maintained a very active social life and expressed her love of past and current staff, who respected her independence and became a second family. Friends and family called from 3-6PM on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, where Carol’s funeral service took place immediately after calling hours at 6PM. Interment was held at 11am on Friday, January 14, 2022 at St. Agnes Cemetery, on Linden Street in Avon, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 96 Prospect St, Avon, NY 14414 or to: The Arc Livingston-Wyoming, 18 Main Street, Mount Morris, NY 14510.

Over her 87 years, Marilyn got to experience city life, country life and life on the lake. She spent her early life in the city’s 19th Ward, where she attended #37 school and West High. Marilyn was a talented artist and pianist, and enjoyed many summer bike rides to the Genesee Valley Park pool. After her marriage to Fred Smith they moved to Rush, where her parents owned many acres of farm land. One of her many hobbies included gardening, but it was raising her daughters that gave her the greatest joy in life. She lived her final decades and days at her home on Conesus Lake where she enjoyed her life, friends and family until the day of her peaceful passing.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

The family of JAMES ( JIM) PERRY Needs your help again! HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP:

This may be the last time we ask for your help in keeping Kevin Westfall in prison for murdering our brother Jim in 1992. Inmate Westfall pled guilty to the charge of murder 2 and was given a prison term of 20 years to LIFE. Over the past several years, Inmate Westfall has been interviewed by the parole board and, with your help, his parole has been denied each time. However, with the recent parole of an inmate from Savona, NY who murdered a four-year-old child, we are more than worried that Inmate Westfall will also be granted parole. Inmate Westfall has another parole hearing set for March 2022. If he (Inmate Westfall) is released, he will most likely live in our County, if not our Town or Village. Many of you may wonder why we don’t just say, “he has served his time, why not let him get out of prison?” There are two reasons: first, he stabbed our brother to death at age 43 in an unprovoked, pre-meditated murder and the pain of that act has lived and will live with our family forever. (Take a moment and think what you would do if this were your loved one). Second, we promised our father before his passing that we would do everything possible to keep Inmate Westfall in prison for the LIFE sentence that he was given.

Send a letter stating that you want parole denied. Be sure to include his name Kevin J. Westfall and DIN #93B1389,

and send to: SORC Collins Correctional Facility Middle Rd. PO Box 490 Collins, NY 14034-0490 OR Go online to https://doccs.ny.gov/form/ letters-in-support-or-opposition

NOW’S THE TIME TO

TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Fo Ren IN LIVONIA Spacious 1 & 2 bedroom

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

includes hot water + 24 hour emergency service, storage & laundry in each bldg. Cat friendly. Cable TV ready, A/C & gas heat. Walk to stores, library, etc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hatch” and I frequently walk the trails of a state park near my house. A leash is required in the park, but many dog owners ignore this rule and allow their dogs to bound ahead. Not all of these dogs are well-socialized, and we’ve faced aggressive, unleashed dogs on the trails. I carry a walking stick in case I need to fend off an attacking dog -- something that hasn’t happened yet, though it’s come close once or twice. Please help me make other dog owners aware that off-leash dogs can make other dogs, and humans, quite nervous. Keeping dogs on leash will help avoid a confrontation, fight or injury. -- Doug S., Stoneham, Massachusetts DEAR DOUG: You’re absolutely right! Dog owners, always review the rules regarding pets on park lands. Even though forested trails seem remote and safer for dogs to run free without a leash, you never know if another dog is just around the bend. Further, even a leashed dog needs to follow basic commands like sit, stay and heel, and to come back immediately when called if the leash is accidentally dropped. Rules are typically posted at trailheads, as well as on park websites. There’s no reason to not be familiar with leash rules before going for a hike. If you encounter an off-leash dog while on a trail, remain calm. Shorten your dog’s leash so that he walks next to you. Stay calm and relaxed with the owner when they finally appear, too. Ask if they’re aware that there’s a leash rule on the trail, but don’t start a confrontation. The more awareness you can build of your park’s rules, the fewer offleash meetings you’ll face.

Honeoye Falls-Lima Mendon Kiwanis Offers Kentucky Families a Helping Hand BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

n a time when new virus strains and new vaccines are a constant focus, it is sometimes easy to unintentionally overlook the many benevolent organizations which have been serving our communities for a long time. One such organization, Kiwanis, has been meeting the needs of others for over 100 years. Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1915, Kiwanis now boasts more than 550,000 members in 80 countries and geographic areas worldwide and hosts nearly 150,000 service projects each year. One of its local chapters, the Honeoye Falls-Lima/Mendon Kiwanis Club, recently took part in a statewide initiative to help Kentucky families impacted by devastating tornados. The Honeoye Falls-Lima/Mendon Kiwanis Club (HFLM Kiwanis), a recent addition to the Kiwanis Club family, is no stranger to crisis, having been chartered in August of 2020. True to Kiwanis’ mission to “serve the children of the world,” HFLM Kiwanis teamed up with other local Kiwanis Clubs over the holidays to support a local boy with Spina Bifida by giving him a special bike adjusted to his disabilities so that he could continue to enjoy the pastime he loves. “Our motto is ‘Changing the world one child and one community at a time,’” explained Vice President Pastor Christine Mitchell, whose mother, Peg Bobzin, is the chapter’s current president. “That is what we focus on: children. It is what makes us different from other organizations.” Mitchell explained that Kiwanis maintains service leadership programs for children from elementary school through college and beyond: K-Kids for elementary students, Builders Club for middle and junior high school students, Key Club for high school students, Circle K for college students, and Aktion Club for adults with disabilities. “We are trying to teach children and others how to give back to their communities,” said Mitchell. “We participate in projects such as raising money for the Golisano Children’s Hospital, and we continue to help our communities, as well.” When HFLM Kiwanis was asked to join in collecting necessary items for families impacted by Kentucky tornadoes, there was only one possible answer. “We received a call from the governor of The New York District of Kiwanis International Clubs,” Mitchell Kiwanis Finger Lakes Division Lt. Governor recalled. “All of the Deborah Rought (l) and NY District Lyme Kiwanis districts in Disease Brittany Award Recipient Pastor New York were called upon to help Christine Mitchell (r), Vice President of in Honeoye Falls-Lima, Mendon Kiwanis Club. families Kentucky. We noticed that other clubs had teamed up with Canandaigua National Bank. We reached out, and our local branch said, ‘Absolutely!” HFLM Kiwanis, a member of Kiwanis’ Finger Lakes division, put up boxes around town for its collection. “In about a week, we filled the entire back of my pickup truck!” shared Mitchell. “We also purchased ten $25 gift cards to Walmart so that people can get other things they need. We collected many items, including food, toiletries, a lot of diapers, and other things we thought these families could use. The district is taking all collected items down to Kentucky next week.”

Honeoye Falls-Lima, Mendon Kiwanis Club participates in the Kentucky Tornado Relief Collection! President Peg Bobzin (l) & Rev Virginia Tyler-Smith (r) As one HFLM Kiwanis Facebook post stated, Mitchell and HFLM Kiwanis is extraordinarily grateful to all who supported and contributed to the Kiwanis Kentucky Tornado Relief Collection. “Our club joined in with many others across The New York District of Kiwanis International Clubs,” the post stated. “A special thank you to Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services Mendon-Honeoye Falls Office, St. John’s Episcopal Church of Honeoye Falls, the United Methodist Church of Honeoye Falls, and the First Presbyterian Church of Honeoye Falls. We cannot thank the community enough for their help in this project!” “Opportunities like this help teach kids about leadership, become leaders in their communities, and learn about giving back at a young age,” Mitchell said. “Hopefully, through Kiwanis Club, it will become second nature to them. We believe this is possible by working with people of all ages, talents and backgrounds through volunteer service projects and fundraising opportunities.” While Kiwanis kids learn the value of service, they are also learning how to plan and build their own successes. “We want to give these children the opportunities to achieve their dreams and succeed in life,” explained Mitchell. “What better way than to part with them, come alongside them, and help them see the benefits of giving back to their community? We hope to instill leadership qualities in them and give them confidence, building them up to the point where they can achieve any dream they would like. As many Kiwanians have before them, we believe they will grow into amazing leaders.” If you would like to learn more about Kiwanis, find your local chapter at Kiwanis.org, join us at an upcoming meeting, 2nd & 4th Wednesdays at noon, Lima Town Hall via ZOOM, or email HFLMKiwanis@gmail.com!

INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced. AUTOMOTIVE

Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

Answers 1. “Carrie” 2. Burger King 3. Abraham Lincoln 4. Keaton 5. The wolf in the story 6. Bombay 7. “True Grit” 8. “Nineteen Eighty-Four,” by George Orwell 9. -40 degrees C and and -40 degrees F 10. Atlanta

Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized.

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Freshen stuffed animals by securing a few in a pillowcase and adding a fabric softener sheet. Put in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes, then remove and brush out the fur, if necessary, while still warm. * “Keep a quart container in the freezer and whenever you have a small amount of leftovers, chop them up and add it to your container. When it’s full, thaw it. Add some of your favorite soup beans, pizza sauce, milk and cheese, and you have a unique and delicious soup.” -- M. from Pennsylvania * If you’ve been decluttering as a part of your New Year’s resolutions, and you came across old pairs of eyeglasses, know that you can donate them to any Lion’s Club in your area. They redistribute the glasses to those who cannot afford them. You don’t have to know the prescription, and they take reading glasses, too! * How can you keep snow and ice off your windshield? Some say a solution of three parts vinegar to one-part water sprayed on the windshield each night can cut your ice-scraping time in half or better. (Use caution to avoid your paint job.) Also, try covering your wipers with an old pair of long socks so they don’t freeze to the glass! * “For pastry cooking, try grating frozen butter into the flour. It cuts in better and will stay cool longer. This helps when I’m making shortbread, as the flour and butter need to be combined. I don’t end up having to put it in the fridge to cool it back down.” -- C.S. in South Carolina

Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Spleen Screens Bacteria and Spent Blood Cells From Body ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had an abdominal X-ray to check on my gallstones, and was surprised to find an enlarged spleen. I was told it might be leukemia or lymphoma! I was sent to an oncologist, who reassured me that I did not have cancer and recommended I get checked again in six months. My doctor checked it after three, and my spleen had gone back down! What is all this with the spleen? People have it removed after injuries, like accidents. It seems to be insignificant, but can it be an omen for cancer? -- M.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an underappreciated abdominal organ. Its major job is to filter and remove old or damaged red blood cells, but it also removes bacteria. In addition, the spleen acts as a very large lymph node, allowing infection-fighting white blood cells to gather and activate. Removal of the spleen leaves people at a higher risk of some kinds of bacterial infections. Enlargement of the spleen has many potential causes. Both liver and heart disease can cause passive congestion of the spleen with blood. Cancer, especially lymphoma, is a common cause, but infection is one cause to consider in a person in whom the spleen enlarges and then returns to normal. There are many less-common causes as well. If the spleen is removed or is nonfunctional (this is almost universal in adults with sickle cell disease, for example), then infections are common, and vaccinations have a different and more intensive schedule, ideally given when the spleen is still in place and working. It is probably worth it for your doctor to continue to keep an eye on.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Donate Life America, 39,700 organ transplants from 19,300 donors brought new life to patients and their families in 2019. Nearly 60 percent of the more than 100,000 men, women and children awaiting lifesaving organ transplants are from multicultural communities. Potential transplant recipients who identify as African American or Black make up the largest percentage from such communities, accounting for 29 percent of the people from multicultural communities currently waiting for an organ transplant. Hispanics/Latinos (20 percent), Asian Pacific Islanders (9 percent), and American Indians/Alaska Natives (1 percent) are other groups with significant amounts of people currently awaiting a transplant.

Fishing: Of course not all outdoor activities need to make seniors huff and puff. Fishing provides a great reason to get outdoors, and many individuals devoted to fishing report feeling less stressed after a day spent casting for their favorite fish. Individuals who consume what they catch also can benefit by improving their diets, as the American Heart Association notes that consuming certain types of fish has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and obesity.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
