DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am traveling for business in a few days and will be gone for just over a week. Because I can’t bring my dog Jasper with me, I’m trying to decide whether to board him at a nearby kennel or hire a dog-sitter instead. I’m worried about him contracting that respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs lately. What’s your recommendation? -- Todd G., via email DEAR TODD: Both of those options are fine -- as long as you take a few minutes to investigate both the kennel and interview the dog-sitter. Schedule a tour of the kennel facility so you can see the conditions Jasper will live in and talk to the staff. Has the kennel had any dogs develop kennel cough or other transmitted viruses recently? How often do they disinfect the kennels and play areas? How much exercise do the dogs get? Likewise, interview the dog-sitter in person, or over Zoom. How often will they visit Jasper -- once or twice a day? How often will Jasper get walks and play time? Will Jasper be the only dog being walked, or will he be part of a group of dogs? Is the dog-sitter insured, in case of accidents? Once you’ve decided which caregiver to place Jasper with, be sure they have your contact information in case of emergencies, and details about Jasper’s diet, type of food and medications. Place an article of clothing that has your scent on it in Jasper’s bag so that he is more comfortable whether staying at home or sleeping at the kennel. After you return, keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he’s healthy. If he is coughing or sneezing frequently, has a lot of nasal or eye discharge, and seems lethargic or uninterested in food, take him to the vet for an evaluation.

585-243-6740 BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS Animal trainers can address any type of behavior. According to the Animal Behavior Institute, trainers who work with dogs, cats, parrots, or other companion animals must have a thorough and detailed knowledge of animal behavior. Pet owners who have successfully housebroken puppies in the past may think they can do it again with relative ease, but no two puppies are the same. Techniques that worked with one dog will not necessarily work with another. Trainers recognize this and have an array of techniques within their arsenal, making them capable of addressing and correcting any type of behavior.

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

A Letter to Village of Avon Republicans Village of Avon Republicans: My name is George Brown. I reside at 342 Genesee Street, Avon, NY. On January 2, 2024, I announced my candidacy for the Republican nomination for Mayor of Avon. Since then, you have expressed to me the issues that you see affecting the Village. The issues mentioned have been code enforcement, public and private property maintenance, sidewalk repair, roads and gutters, and the fire and police departments. You stated that action on these issues has been, to varying degrees, delayed, neglected, or ignored. The next Mayor will have the responsibility to address these issues. A Masters Degree in Public Administration, my thirty-five year service in the New York State Police, twenty-five years of which were in supervisory positions, and my service in the United States Marine Corps, have enabled me to obtain and practice the leadership, administrative, and intergovernmental skills necessary to fulfill the position of Mayor of Avon. I have served this country and this state; with your support, I will be honored to serve the Village of Avon as its Mayor.
We love hearing from you! Vote and make your voice heard when you visit www.gvpennysaver.com!

Hooray for the Medical Aftercare by Rochester Regional Health Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” was written in 1850 as a love poem for another person. I want to share the ways I love what Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has done to help my wife Dianne (81) since a recent six-day stay at Rochester General Hospital for heart-related issues. Since coming home from the hospital, the follow-up care by RRH has been Tremendous. RRH provided a slew of medical equipment, such as a blood pressure device, oxygen meter reader, great scale commode, and two four-prong walkers for use upstairs and downstairs in our home. RRH has provided me a Telemedicine number to call in her vitals. RRH provided a 24/7 nurse contact for medical issues. There have been periodic visits of physical therapists, nurses, and a social worker. RRH has been God-sent with all the follow-up being provided for Dianne, my dear wife of 59 years. So, “How Do I Love RRH?” A whole lot and Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Love, Joe and Dianne Borzelliere

UNIQUE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK EVERY DAY Grill wisely. Millions of people anxiously await the return of warm weather so they can once again fire up their backyard grills. Various studies have suggested there’s a link between well-done grilled meat and cancer. One study conducted by researchers at Vanderbilt University found that high intake of well-done meat increases exposure to heterocyclic amines (HCAs), a type of carcinogen that forms in cooked red meat. That doesn’t mean individuals should put away their grills, but a change in grilling habits could help lower cancer risk. For example, one study from researchers at Kansas State University found that adding antioxidant-rich spices such as rosemary and thyme to marinade and soaking meat for at least an hour before cooking can reduce HCAs by as much as 87 percent.

What Dosage of NSAIDs Is Safe to Take After a Gastric Sleeve? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had weight-loss surgery, specifically an adjustable lap band that was revised to a gastric sleeve in 2018. I have been given and read conflicting recommendations regarding the use of NSAIDs following these procedures. I have read that taking a low dose (400 mg) is considered safe. I have also read and been told to take the children’s liquid form at an adult dosage rather than the tablets. I am a 57-year-old female. I have largely avoided taking NSAIDs for years, but I have developed osteoarthritis and find that I am taking them more often (400 mg once daily, one to two times a week at most). I do ensure that I take them with food and also take a Pepcid whenever I take ibuprofen. -- A.W. ANSWER: There are several types of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery, and the best evidence that I found among those who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass shows up to a 70% increase in the relative risk of developing peptic ulcers after surgery. This sounds pretty terrible, but it actually means that in an average time span of four years after surgery, 1.4% of people who didn’t take any NSAIDs got an ulcer, while 2.4% of the group that had the greatest amount of NSAID use developed an ulcer. However, the same study showed that only 0.2% of patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy developed an ulcer, and the use of NSAIDs did not significantly increase this number. Finally, other studies have shown that medicines like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce the risk of ulcers by about half when used long-term. NSAIDs always have risks, but for a person with a gastric sleeve, the risks of lowdose ibuprofen are modest and need to be weighed against the benefits for a person’s quality of life. ***

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. Subs that don’t return, including 52 lost during World War II, are considered “still on patrol.” Every year at Christmas, sailors manning communications hubs send holiday greetings to those listed as still on patrol.

Here’s a Tip • Sources who know say that if you drop a marble (clean glass) in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling. • Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions. • Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s highchair to make cleaning up the floor easier. * Air-popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have less unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn. -- E.M. in Wisconsin (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Journey of Faith and Service: The Story of Pastor Greg Falco BY CHELSIE WELLS
G
reg Falco, lead pastor of Elim Life Church in Lima, embarked on his journey of faith with a deep understanding of the human condition and a fervent love for Jesus. His decision to become a pastor was grounded in the foundational belief that every person is created to know and be loved by God, but the choices we make often separate us from Him. Greg’s passion for sharing the transformative message of Jesus became the driving force behind his call to ministry. From an early age, Greg’s parents played a pivotal role in shaping his Christian identity. His mother exhibited a unique connection with God, fostering an active relationship through prayer, Bible reading, and a lifestyle marked by peace. It was this environment that led Greg, at the age of 5 or 6, to invite Jesus into his life, setting the course for his lifelong journey of faith. As a junior in high school, God spoke to Greg’s heart, calling him to become a pastor. Despite initial reservations, a transformative prayer session with a local pastor shifted Greg’s perspective. What began as reluctance transformed into an unshakeable desire to dedicate his life to guiding a congregation and leading them to know Jesus intimately. Greg’s approach to studying the Bible reflects his dual commitment to pastoral responsibilities and personal growth. For his pastoral role, he engages in prayerful reading, using various translations and conducting deeper studies with commentaries and tools to extract timeless truths. Personally, he embraces devotional readings on the YouVersion app, selecting studies that provide a logical progression through the Bible. Since October 2002, Greg has served in various pastoral capacities, including working with children, youth, and as a worship leader before assuming the role of lead pastor. His vision for Elim Life Church extends beyond the confines of a physical building; he envisions a community where people experience the love of Jesus and actively share it with others. Pastors, according to Greg, are spiritual guides, aiding their congregations in understanding the Bible’s application in daily life. They model lives of integrity, but their paramount role is to facilitate a genuine relationship with Jesus, guiding individuals to know God for themselves and grow in their faith. Reflecting on his ministry experiences, Greg finds joy in witnessing lives transformed and individuals healed by the power of God. Challenges emerge when people, once part of the ministry, walk away from their faith or when families navigate painful losses. These contrasting experiences shape Greg’s pastoral journey, reinforcing his reliance on God’s strength.
support, and challenges from these relationships have contributed to his spiritual growth and understanding of the Bible. Greg acknowledges the importance of surrounding himself with a community that fosters love, acceptance, and growth. Greg’s preaching style is characterized by a desire to make the Bible come alive, providing practical insights for everyday living. He incorporates transparency, Greg and Melanie Falco humor, and authenticity, reflecting his approachable personality. When asked about his beliefs, Greg emphasizes the centrality of Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life, echoing John 14:6. He holds a Biblical worldview, finding it the most logical and accurate lens through which to interpret the world. Greg advocates for the preciousness of every life and the need for love and care for all. Amid the myriad of Bible passages that resonate with Greg, his favorites include Galatians 2:20, Romans 5:8, Romans 10:910, Philippians 4:6-7, and Romans 8:28. The stories of Jesus, David, and the book of Acts also hold special significance in his spiritual journey. Greg’s journey to becoming a pastor involved practical training, mentorship, and education, including earning a master’s degree in organizational leadership. His vision for Elim Life Church is to impact the local community and the world for Jesus, fostering an environment where people experience and share the love of Christ. Elim Life Church serves the community through individual acts of kindness, hosting conferences and community events, supporting local ministries, engaging in international outreach, offering small groups for spiritual and practical growth, and providing ministries for youth and children. Pastor Greg Falco’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of faith, shaped by love, commitment, and a profound desire to share the message of Jesus. His unique experiences, combined with a genuine heart for serving others, make his pastoral journey both inspiring and impactful.
The impact of Greg’s faith extends into every facet of his life, transcending the notion of religion as a set of rules. Instead, his faith influences every decision, parenting choice, and leadership action, guided by a constant commitment to understanding God’s will.

Make the most of mulching Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed. First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

Small cracks and gaps around windows, which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1/4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1/4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is available in various materials.
Establish a bar setup Home bars can range from rolling carts to built-in wet bars to a single tray of items. Space in a home will dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt. A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.

The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years.

STR H
(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows.
Page 23
“Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. THINGS PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CREATING WILLS Pets: Some people prefer to use their will to also dictate guardianship for their pets and to leave money or property to help care for those pets. However, pets do not have the legal capacity to own property, so one shouldn’t gift money directly to pets in a will.

PICKUP TRUCKS REMAIN POPULAR Pickup trucks have long been among the most popular vehicles sold, and Statistica states the number of new pickup trucks sold in the United States continues to grow. Between 2015 and 2016, 2.7 million pickups were sold, and some 2.24 million of those were full-sized pickups. A recent study from the Automotive News Data Center found the big three pickup manufacturers, which include Ford, GM and Dodge, sell an average of 6,500 trucks every day in North America. While the popularity of pickup trucks may be evident to today’s motorists, just who is behind the wheels of those trucks may come as a surprise. According to a recent study from MaritzCX, covering the 2016 model year, more people from affluent families are opting for pickup trucks than economy cars. Other factors also may be contributing to the popularity of pickup trucks. A survey from Insure.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers ages 18 and up to rank the kinds of vehicles driven by the most attractive members of the opposite sex. The survey found that women prefer drivers of black pickups. Motorists who have never before driven pickup trucks but are mulling whether or not to join the truck-loving masses can consider a host of factors as they begin looking for trucks. Size: Pickups are larger than many other vehicles and tend to be heavier. As a result, when driving a pickup, leave more space for braking and do not tailgate. Blind spots: Because pickup trucks are longer than cars, they may have larger blind spots. Drivers should adjust the mirrors to diminish as much of their blind spots as possible. Also, give ample notice when changing lanes or making turns. Reverse: Upon purchasing a pickup, first-time truck owners may benefit from practicing driving in reverse so they can grow accustomed to doing so in a truck. Hauling gear: Be sure to properly restrain items that are hauled in the pickup truck bed, or invest in a bed cover so nothing is lost and safety is not compromised. Inclement weather driving: Pickup trucks have very little weight in the back when their beds are empty. This can cause trucks to fishtail on wet or snowy roads. Alleviate this by placing some sandbags in truck beds before driving in poor weather. AUTOMOTIVE ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

CLAR’S COLLISION 4778 Honeoye Business Park, Honeoye • 585-229-2008 INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced. AUTOMOTIVE ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer • Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children. • Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards. • Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces. • Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

DID YOU KNOW? Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.
Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
